Democracy for Detroit

Description:

We are a grassroots, volunteer organization networking with like-minded people to bring Detroit back from the edge of disaster. We feel that every individual needs to engage in the political process at some level and that we should not have a professional political class.
Build Up Detroit (BUD)

Using sustainability principles, citizen engagement, and green job development, BUD seeks to demonstrate how a coordinated strategy can set the groundwork for Detroit to take the lead in sustainability.

The purpose of this program is to catalyze a new development paradigm for Detroit that will ensure lasting health and prosperity.
Goals:
provide meaningful employment opportunities to underemployed and unemployed individuals primarily in Detroit
create equality in accessing green jobs and creating green businesses for Detroit residents
expand opportunties for local businesses in green and brownfield industries through a highly skilled and trained Detroit-based workforce
transform the lives and communities of Detroit through sustainable, environmentally just and green job practices. An opportunity to develop leadership skills

Our activities include:

Youth explore environmental issues in their neighborhoods
conduct environmental justice tours
work on wildlife conservancy with partners such as the Belle Isle Nature Center
train to start environmental justice clubs at their schools
