- Sen. McCaskill's UMKC health care reform event
By Liz C on Aug 24, 2009 7:55 PM EDTGot to the sports facility about 3:30, when the doors opened. The news estimated 1,100 attendees. Sounded like about 80% were pro health care reform.
Claire kept the proceedings civil by having people submit their questions on cards, instead of calling on people from the audience. Very smart. Even smarter, she asked who in the audience was dead-set AGAINST health care reform. She picked one couple who had raised their hands to pick the question cards out of a basket. They seemed to think it was like a prize drawing, and they didn't look at the questions before handing them to Claire's assistant to take to her. I would have looked, but that's just me.
Sen. McCaskill gave each questioner whose card was picked the opportunity to ask their question or have her read it. Most chose the latter, in the huge auditorium. Most questions were pro health care reform. One man of Medicare age, who had raised his hand when she asked how many wanted Medicare eliminated (huh?), yelled out later that "Medicare is broken." These people don't even know what their personal experience tells them.
No placards or signs were allowed inside, another smart move. A small knot of people at the back yelled unintelligibly now and then, but aside from that, McCaskill was allowed to answer the questions and give everyone the straight story on the current state of the health care reform debate in the Senate.
Good show for McCaskill and pro supporters.
