Endorsement Spotlight:
Ben Chin

Ben Chin
Mayor of Lewiston, Maine

On one side of my family, I'm the grandson of Chinese immigrants that came to the U.S. during the Great Depression. On the other side, my family has been in the U.S. for hundreds of years. I graduated on a scholarship from Bates College in 2007, originally planning on going to seminary. But I got involved in the community with Maine People's Alliance, working as a community organizer on issues like housing, health care, immigrant rights, and minimum wage. My wife and I just had our first child on November 1st, a baby girl named Anjali Marie Chin.

I'm running because Lewiston, like nearly everywhere else in America, is struggling. While the rich have gotten richer, leaving everyone else's wages in stagnation or decline, some corporations have actually profited off the fraying of our society. In our city, corporate slumlords routinely charge full rent, then refuse to heat their buildings in the winter, allow children to be poisoned from lead paint, and expect taxpayers to demolish their buildings once they've been sucked dry. We need real leadership that can bring fresh ideas and new energy to re-build our city. That's why I've released a plan to create 100 units of resident-owned housing, a model economic development block, an Office of New Americans to facilitate immigrant integration, and a plan to create blue collar jobs through solar energy.

Election Date: December 8, 2015

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?
