Who am I?

I am a 67 year old resident of the City of Chicago. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and a Master's Degree in Business Administration. I am a retired Computer Instructor who taught for 22 years at Columbia College Chicago.

I am a former candidate for Illinois State Rep (2010) where I received 34% of the vote in a two-way race with the machine-supported incumbent. I recently finished a two-year term on the Roosevelt High School Local School Council.

I am a 5 year voting member of NorthSide (Chicago) DFA. They have endorsed my candidacy.

Why am I running?

Our current Alderman (Marge Laurino) "inherited" the job 20 years ago from her father who was Alderman for the preceding 30 years. She is a "rubber stamp" in City Hall for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Together they govern for the benefit of corporations and the 1%.

We see a decline in the quality of city services, a real threat to our public school system, rampant violence and an under-staffed police force.

They have broken our Democratic system. At times like this I know I must stand for real democracy and the citizens of our great city.

My Goals

I am running for this office 1. Because it is my heart. 2. There is wide discontent with the both the mayor and the city council. 3. My Alderman is especially vulnerable. 4. I have the education, background, experience to do the job well. 4. I am an experienced campaigner, both for myself and for others.

My DFA Values

Policy: Be present to my constituents; Listen to them carefully; Act justly based on the input of the citizens of Ward 39.

My complete platform in on my website at http://Laiacona4ward39.com/platform.

My "short" platform is 1. Fully funded public education; 2. Reinstitute our city-wide mental health services (the mayor closed it down); and 3. The creation of jobs through investment in much needed city infrastructure improvements, especially for public schools, parks and transportation

Provide exemplary service to the citizens in my ward.

My Campaign is People Powered!

I am a socially progressive, fiscally responsible and ethically committed Democrat. I believe that holding political office must be about service, NOT power.

I am beholden only to those who vote in my ward and see the office of Alderman as one that serves their needs.

This summer I have relentlessly campaigned door to door, meeting my constituents, introducing myself to them and seeking their votes --- good old fashioned grass root campaign. I have worked for and won the endorsement of (Chicago) North Side DFA.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
