Who am I?

As a chiropractic physician for the past 35 years and an advocate on health-related issues on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., I was encouraged to run for office and in 2010 was elected to the FL House of Representatives where I served in 2011-12 as Ranking Member on Health Access Subcommittee, Economic Affairs Committee and all committees related to agriculture, natural resources and water supply. I passed more legislation than any other Minority party freshman in my class. I was Florida Law Enforcement (PRU) Legislator of the Year in 2011 for my bill to combat trafficking in stolen credit and debit cards. I also created Nursing Home Diversion for low-income seniors and created jobs by establishing two Enterprise Zones. In 2012, my bills created "Everglades Day" as a state-wide annual observance and I also unanimously passed a landmark fresh water storage bill. I vigorously debated against attempted legislation to obstruct women's personal choices regarding their repoductive health.

Why am I running?

I have a proven record of being able to get things done in the Florida House, despite serving in the "Super-Minority", while staying true to my ideals as a committed, life-long Democrat. I earned the respect of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and communicated effectively in Committees and on the Floor. There is so much more to be done and the District 96 constituents, and all Floridians, need a strong and intelligent voice to bring forth issues and fight to create a vibrant, financially secure middle class and to protect those citizens least able to protect themselves, our children and seniors.

My Goals

My areas of focus will include providing access to affordable, accessable health care for all Floridians including the freedom for women to make their own personal reproductive choices; stimulating our economy through job creation and advancing agriculture and tourism as key economic drivers while protecting The Everglades responsibly managing our natural resources; public safety and supporting our first responders who protect us; and fully funding quality public education to assure that teachers are properly compensated for providing the best education for our children.

My DFA Values

I wholeheartedly embrace the values of community, security and liberty as evidenced by my record of accomplishments while in office. I have been an outspoken champion for the Environment, the middle-class, public safety, education, a fair and sane immigration policy, and a woman's right to choose.

My Campaign is People Powered!

Since the very start of my campaign, I have been consistently walking District 96, knocking on doors and speaking directly with Democratic voters on every important issue. My network of volunteers and campaign team of professionals have a decades-long history of grass-roots activism and getting Democratic candidates elected to local, state and federal offices. I am an active member of all 4 Democratic clubs in District 96 and have generated a loyal following among their members, many of whom have volunteered to work on my campaign and are enlisting their neighbors to get on board as well.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?
