Who am I?

I am an environmentalist, and have been active in environmental actions for over 40 years at the Tribal, International, National, State, and Local levels.

Why am I running?

Northern Michigan is facing some pretty dire environmental threats --and the economy of this region is almost wholly dependent on keeping Northern Michigan "Clean and Green." The 37th State Senate District is the most environmentally-sensitive District in the state (the District touches on 3 of the 4 Great Lakes that lap Michigan's shores). The biggest threat is the Enbridge oil-pipeline which lies under the Mackinac Bridge. This is the same Enbridge pipeline company responsible for the largest oil-spill in the country's history (despoiling the Kalamazoo River in Michigan). Northern Michigan also faces the threat of environmental degradation from the widespread fracking in the state.

My Goals

#1 --protection of the environment (and the jobs its supports).
#2 --restoration of public funding for schools, roads, and other infrastructure needs.
#3 --reverse policies that have devastated the middle-class and made the dire situation faced by the poor, sick, and unemployed even more impoverishing. One of my first actions in this regard will be to introduce legislature to reverse Michigan's disastrous so-called "Right to Work" law.

My DFA Values

I will work tirelessly for the 99%, and oppose all policies (both implemented and proposed in Michigan) that favor the 1%.

My Campaign is People Powered!

Given my outspoken support for the 99% and the environment, I cannot expect anything but viterperation from those who are currently supporting the Republican incumbents, so I have been meeting with progressive groups throughout my campaign --and relying on the support that I've built up over these past 40+ years of community involvement. My biggest challenge, quite frankly, is to convince voters (and, more importantly, non-voters) that I am not your "typical politician." I can only do that through a spirited campaign that is firmly based in grassroots action.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?
