Who am I?

John Hernandez is the son of a Labor Union Career Railroad Man and a politically active mother who worked on behalf of veterans with the American GI Forum. John Hernandez worked his way through college at Food Maxx, where he joined the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1288, and graduated with a degree in history from Fresno State in 1996. John has lived in the Central Valley for nearly thirty years.

After graduation John spent 10 years working in the insurance industry with both Aetna and Prudential. In 2004 John Hernandez was elected President of The Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure at the chamber, the organization and Hernandez have received numerous awards, national, regional and local, for work in helping businesses grow in Central California. He was honored as 2008 executive of the year from the US Hispanic Chamber for Region 1 and 2009 Executive of the year from the State Hispanic Chamber. Under his leadership the chamber was awarded the “Outstanding Partnership Award” in 2009 and 2011 by the Fresno County Board of Supervisors for the “Fair Today Work Tomorrow Job Fair,” a partnership between The Fresno County Department of Social Services, the Economic Development Corporation serving Fresno County and the Chamber. The Job Fair has had over 12,000 attendees and over 200 employers each year, and has become an important driver of job creation in an area battered by the economic downturn.

In 2009 John was named a recipient of the prestigious Top Dog Award that is awarded to accomplished Fresno State alumni. John and his wife Karen, have been married 17 years, and reside in Fresno County.

Why am I running?

I am running for Congress because our leaders have let us down. The recent government shutdown cost tax payers 26 billion. Washington shut us down because they do not want poor people to have health insurance. I support the Affordable Care Act and think we need to move to a single payer system. We should have passed that. We need to invest in infrastructure and put people back to work. Unlike both of my opponents I think we should NOT FRACK CALIFORNIA! There are better ways to meet our energy needs like solar, wind, biomass ect. We also need to pass the Robin Hood Tax and protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid! NO VOUCHERS! We need to say no to chained CPI and yes to scraping the cap on social security. Unlike my opponents who support the Trans Pacific Partnership, I think we need to scrap it! It is poison to our middle class, small business and working people. Let me repeat... No Fracking, No TTP, Yes to immigration reform with a path to citizenship and Yes HIGH SPEED RAIL! I also support the Better Off Budget and bringing economic and social justice to the 21st Congressional district.

My Goals

Infrastructure investment
Reducing unemployment and poverty in the district.
Fighting for a BAN on Frackinng

My DFA Values

I support DFS Values!
I believe in community. We must care about our neighbors and help each other. It is important to provide a bright future for our kids with a quality education and a secure retirement. We must ensure that our seniors are free from poverty. We can accomplish this by passing THE BETTER OFF BUDGET put forth by the Progressive Caucus. We don't want to leave the burden of debt on the next generation. Progressives values lift up the community and makes sure that everyone has a chance no matter where you live.
I believe in security. We must foster partnerships with other nations to ensure the security and safety for us all. We must reduce our dependence on resources that make us vulnerable to attack. Investing in our own economy and environment is critical to our success as a nation. We need to fund schools and invest in green jobs!
I believe in liberty. Religious freedom is the bedrock of our nation and everyone must be free to worship as they wish. Discrimination has no place in our country and we need to deliver on the promise of equality for all Americans. Privacy is imperative to keeping our country and its citizens free from the shackles of the surveillance state.

My Campaign is People Powered!

Our campaign is totally grassroots. I have a long history in the non profit world here in Central California and have built relationship up and down the valley. We have two offices. One in Bakersfield (931 Niles) and the other in Fresno (1055 N. Van Ness Ste. I). I believe in the people of the 21st District and want to bring Social and Economic Justice to our valley. Our current number of volunteers is 200 and growing. They come from all walks of life, seniors, youth, professionals, activists and Spanish speakers. Our goal is to say no to the power of Washington DC! Unfortunately DC is trying to pick our candidate for us rather than the people of the district. WE SAY NO TO DC!

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
