Who am I?
I come from a family guided by their commitment to public service. My public career has been built on the foundation of my principles and convictions.
In 1998, I was elected as a New Jersey Assemblywoman and quickly rose into leadership, becoming chair of the Appropriations Committee, then the Chair of the New Jersey's Democratic State Party in 2002 where I worked to strengthen the party and helped the Democrats win back the majority.
I became the first African American woman to serve as the Majority Leader of the General Assembly. I focused on bringing the party together behind Democratic ideals while serving the people throughout the entire state of New Jersey.
Why am I running?
My legislative tenure on the state level has been served upholding the same democratic ideals and progressive values as the retiring Congressman, Rush Holt. If elected, I will continue to fight for the needs of everyday working families and will continue to stand tall for the priorities of our children, senior citizens, veterans, and our most vulnerable.
I am a firm believer that to whom much is given, much is required. I will proudly serve my district as an unwavering strong Democrat.
Top three priorities:
1) A quality education for all children as well as safe and equitable learning environments for all public schools.
2) Ensuring civil and equal rights for women, minorities, the LGBT community, and the incarcerated.
3) Fostering economic growth to create good paying jobs.
My DFA Values
When I am in Washington, we will all have a seat at the table. I have been an active member in the community and have stood up for the progressive values like education, gun safety, equal rights, and women's health care. I will be a necessary voice in Washington.
I have never been afraid to stand up for what I believe in and will be a strong voice against the extremists in Congress who are holding progress hostage. I am a progressive with a backbone.
My Campaign is People Powered!
With the endorsement of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, our campaign has been able to reach out to more expansive constituencies through emails, facebook, and our website.
Not only through the PCCC organization, our campaign is also reaching out to different organizations through the state that hold values similar to ours including but not limited to different women's groups, LGBT advocates, and other progressive activists, in order to get involved in their own communities.
