Who am I?

I am a fifth Generation Hoosier born and raised in Ohio County, my lifelong ties to Indiana give me insight into the challenges facing Sixth District residents and businesses. After graduating from Rising Sun High School and working for a few years, I attended Ball State University and earned my Bachelor of Science degree in finance and economics. I then began his professional career by working in the banking industry in Vevay, Indiana.Later I went on to receive my Juris Doctorate from Indiana University in 1990 and have continued with my education and completed the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Course in 2010.

While finishing law school, I ran for State Senate (District 43) in 1990. Although this bid for office was unsuccessful, the experience left a lasting impression on me. As a result, I remained active in the local Democratic party and volunteered my time to several candidates.

I met my wife, Robin Bingham, in college. Robin is a neonatal nurse in the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Childrens's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. We have been married since 1982 and have three children. The oldest, Allison and Brenden, are fraternal twins. Allison is in graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington and Brenden is currently serving in the United States Army. Caroline, the youngest, attends Rising Sun High School. We reside in Ohio County and belong to the First United Church of Christ, where I have served as a former Elder, Deacon, lay speaker, and Consistory President.

Why am I running?

I'm running for U.S. Congress because I think that I can make a difference for working and middle class Hoosier families. People are upset with this Congress and it’s inaction on important issues. Congressional approval rating is at its lowest point in history because we have allowed big money and special interests to gain control. The Citizens United decision put our democracy up for sale to the highest bidder. We have a Congress that is tied up in partisan bickering and failing to live up to its’ responsibility to provide solid leadership and policy.
I can no longer stand by and just watch. Our current representative, Luke Messer is part of the problem. He pushed for a shutdown of the government in 2013 and helped to manufacture a crisis over the debt ceiling. In doing so, He risked the financial solvency of this nation. This taking us to the brink of disaster is just another example of the destructive winning at all costs attitude in our nation’s capitol. It used to be that these kind of politics stopped the day after the election and our elected representatives went about doing the people’s business.

I believe that we can do better. I have spent my life working with people and businesses in rural small town Indiana. Its those same small town values which I hope to take to Washington as your Congressman. It's time to take common sense back to Washington and do what is best for the nation.

My Goals

1. Support Public Education stop the privatization of our schools.
2. Raise the Minimum wage, expand the middle class
3. Invest in infrastructure and create jobs.

I run my own successful law firm in Ohio County, work in Economic and Tourism development and teach as an adjunct instructor at Ivy Tech Community College. I
am an active member in his community, and have served as the past president of the Rising Sun-Ohio County Chamber of Commerce, secretary of the Southeastern Indiana Regional Growth Alliance, a member of the Southeastern Indiana Regional Plan Commission, President of the Ohio County Historical Society, and as the Executive Director of the Ohio County Economic Development Corporation

My DFA Values

I believe in equality and liberty. I recently submitted testimony to the Indiana House in opposition to the proposed amendment to ban same sex marriage. I will fight for common sense solutions to bring about greater economic equality in this nation and restore democracy by fighting to overturn Citizens United. I have stated policy positions on my website.

My Campaign is People Powered!

I have employed heavy use of Social media using both Facebook and Twitter.
My campaign is underfunded and running against a Koch financed candidate in a heavily Republican district in Indiana. I have spoken out against the first term incumbent on several occasions and will continue to do so.
I regularly submit opinion pieces to local papers.
I am conducting meet and greets in every one of the 19 counties in the District on a regular basis.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
