Why Not Romney; Why Not Huckabee

Written by: Alan Willis on Aug 29, 2008 2:07 PM EDT

Linked to campaigns: Obama for America

Almost as soon as Obama named his vice-presidential choice (a person well qualified to hold the job of VP and reliable for holding the job of President should something disastrous befall Obama) McCain attacked with ads asking "Why not Clinton." Other people may have wondered why Obama selected Biden over Clinton, but no one could question--realistically--Biden's qualifications.

If Obama really decided against Hillary Clinton because she questioned some of his positions in the primaries, would the exact same question apply to why McCain refused to select Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee? Clearly, it would. So, Senator McCain, why not Romney? Why not Huckabee? Is that you didn't pick Romney because he highlighted your ignorance about the economy? Did you not pick Huckabee because he through your inconsistencies into sharp relief? (However much I disagree with Governor Huckabee on almost every point, he has demonstrated both consistency and integrity).

But the question is even bigger. Joe Biden is qualified to be VP. Joe Biden could--if needed--fill the office of President. Gov. Palin? I don't think so... and I would suspect that a even a number of normally Republicans voters would feel the same way.

How much difference will it make? It would seem to be the worst VP choice since... well, ok, it's not been that long since Dan Quayle.

I realize people tend to vote the top of the ticket, not the bottom. Head to head, Obama is clearly the better choice than McCain. Biden is clearly the better choice than Palin. Biden, indeed, would be a far better choice than McCain.

Why ask why and just be thankful for the gift that should keep giving until Election Day.

Republicans just do as they are told, and would vote for a manatee.  Why not Senior Moment and Miss Mooseburger?

he voted for the war in Iraq. Of all the former Democratic presidental candidate hopefuls Sen. Biden alone supported the 2005 Bankruptcy Bill. Biden also said Obama is inexperienced and that the presidency is not a place for "on the job training"

A random name out of a phonebook would have been a better choice than Biden is.

This is an exact duplicate of what you posted yesterday.  It is one thing to be a low info voter because you are too lazy to do your research.  It is quite another to plagarize yourself.

Hillary didn't vote and Obama voted no. My point is Obama wants to change the face of politics  but then from a group of fresh faces selected an old one - a stale one.

US rejects 'false' Russia claim

Mr Putin believes US citizens were in the area of conflict
The US has dismissed as "patently false" accusations by Russia that it helped provoke the conflict in Georgia for domestic political reasons.

The White House said Russia would face consequences for its continuing military presence in Georgia.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told CNN that US citizens had been in the conflict zone of South Ossetia.

He said his defence officials had told him the provocation was to benefit one of the US presidential candidates.

Georgia tried to retake the Russian-backed separatist region of South Ossetia this month by force after a series of clashes.

- Why not Huckabee, indeed?

By volney simmons on Sep 1, 2008 8:43 AM EDT

To me, that is the haunting question. If McCain wanted to appeal to the conservative base with a person who's charming, I would think Mike Huckabee would be the obvious choice. Also a former governor but with more experience than Palin and governing a more populous state.

Also, the dirty little secret about Mike Huckabee is that women, even liberal women, find him attractive even when they know they shouldn't. He's a GOP Bill Clinton (all the charm with none of the catting around, at least as far as we know).

I think McCain couldn't stand to be the less handsome man on the podium (vs. Romney) or the less charming one (vs. Huckabee), so now he can be squiring around one more bit of arm candy -- but as a friend of mine observed, this just makes him look like a dirty old man.

PS The Obama-Biden inerview was fascinating, and pointed out again just how presidential Obama is. At the one point where Joe got nattering along as only Joe can, Barack cut in and made the point for him, and did it in such a way as to assert authority without causing any resentment in Joe. Biden's going to end up being a much stronger interviewer and debater fr being around Obama, and Obama's going to become more charming for being around Biden.

- Why not

By publius on Sep 1, 2008 9:49 AM EDT

I think you have it on the Huckabee angle.

Actually, McCain owes a great debt to Huck for knocking off Romney in Iowa while he ignored Iowa to lay it all on the line in NH.

Huckabee would have been a formidable candidate IMO.

Wall Street and other power brokers, many of whom have underwritten Obama's campaign to play both sides,  lined up to squash him in the primaries.

There just the one thing about him that discredited his whole platform in my eyes.  His support to end income tax and replace it with a national sales tax was in complete conflict with his populist rhetoric and calls to raise living standards for the working class.

I think he would have helped McCain hold several red states, but as you say, Huckabee would have seriously out charmed McCain.
