Jackson for Senate
| Name: | Jackson for Senate |
| Office: | CA Senate District 19 |
| Website: | jackson4senate.com |
Background:
Hannah-Beth Jackson, an attorney and former prosecutor, served in the California Assembly for six years, representing portions of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. During that time she was an advocate for improving public education, increasing public safety, improving access to health care, protecting the environment and protecting the rights of consumers. Jackson worked with Democratic and Republican Governors and authored more than 60 bills that they signed into law.
She was named "Legislator of the Year" by the Consumer Federation of California for her strong advocacy in the areas of health care and privacy rights. Jackson was also named "Legislator of the Year" by the Congress of California Seniors and by the California League of Conservation Voters for her unwavering protection of our natural resources and public health. She was named "Legislator of the Year" by the National Organization for Women for advancing women's health issues and equal opportunity and by the Junior League of California for her work on domestic violence and issues effecting children. Californians Against Waste named her legislator of the year after the passage of her bills on pesticide use and the recycling of electronic-waste. Other awards include "Guardian of the Coast" from Vote the Coast, the "Outstanding Public Service Award" by the California School Employees Association and the Planned Parenthood "Giraffe award" - for sticking her neck out.
Hannah-Beth is married to Superior Court Judge George Eskin. She has a daughter, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.
Goals:
My vision is for a greener world where we address and prevail over global warming and successfully reverse man-made climate change; where we preserve open space in a way that respects our state and nation’s beauty, that protects against environmental pollution which degrades public health and the earth itself; where California’s children are the best prepared in the world to deal with global competition and 21st century technology and are committed to the critical responsibilities of living and voting in a democratic society. We also owe every individual quality and accessible healthcare and the right to live a life of basic dignity free of poverty or discrimination.
Issues:
A. Make California home of the Green Economy, by focusing all resources necessary into a partnership between California’s educational system and industries committed to environmentally responsible products and methodologies including energy production, recycling, conservation and low impact production.
B. Require corporate responsibility and stewardship so that we effectively discourage corporate policies that degrade the earth and mistreat employees and workers in the name of profit. We need to redefine the priorities of our economic system. While supporting competition, innovation and entrepreneurship, we must also insist upon a dimension of productivity that includes social and environmental responsibility.
C. To develop a true quasi-government-run single-payer healthcare system modeled after this county’s very successful medicare program to provide accessible quality and affordable healthcare to all who require it.
Grassroots Support:
Groups are organizing in the top 12 cities in my district to reach out to their neighbors to let them know that change is possible on a state level, and that my campaign will provide an avenue for real, common sense discussion of critical issues important to their lives. Our local volunteer groups will organize neighbor to neighbor letter writing, email, phone banking and door knocking campaigns designed to highlight the importance of this race, and to ensure that their values are represented in Sacramento.
DFA Values:
I believe we can balance our state's budget without doing such extraordinary damage to our state's educational and human services infrastructure as the Governor is proposing. I support closing tax loopholes for those that don’t need them to support the hopes and dreams of our children and invest in our state's future. The yacht tax loophole, loopholes for gas-guzzling vehicles owned by business, tax breaks for racehorses used for breeding, tax breaks for oil companies that extract our oil — all of these have questionable economic merit and do not compare to the value of a state with a top tier educational system.
