Houston, TX – Gas prices remain at record levels at a time when Americans are struggling to pay for groceries and racking up record credit card debt. Today Texas gas prices hit the highest prices ever seen in the state, averaging $3.85 for a gallon of regular gas and the national average also hit the highest price on record, averaging $3.978. [AAA Fuel Gauge report, 6/3/08] Yet, Senator John Cornyn has refused to take real action to help Texas families. Melissa Noriega, wife of U.S. Senate candidate Rick Noriega, is one of several supporters who are "filling Rick's boots" while he is on active duty with the Texas Army National Guard this week. She previously filled in for her husband in the Texas State House while he was serving Afghanistan.
The Climate Security Act under consideration in the Senate this week provides real solutions to the short term and long term problems facing Texas families. It will boost the economy by providing immediate tax relief to consumers struggling with high gas prices and by creating millions of good jobs. It will strengthen America's security by reducing dependence on foreign oil and the nations that export it. And it will restore America as a leading innovator in energy technology, putting the country on a path for cleaner, healthier future.
"Texas is well positioned to lead in innovative alternative energies – we've already emerged as a leader in wind energy," said Melissa Noriega. "It's time for a Texas Senator who will break with old style politics and instead stand for policies that will help Texas families now and our future generations. My husband Rick Noriega will do just that."
Oil prices have quadrupled and gas prices have more than doubled during Senator Cornyn's time in the Senate. The impact of the increased gas prices is making headlines today with the announcement from General Motors that increased gas prices would force the closure of American auto plants, affecting thousands of workers. And Texas Prison Guards in rural counties testified recently before the Texas Senate Committee on Criminal Justice that they cannot afford to drive to work.
"Today John Cornyn said that he is hearing from Texans about the high gas prices they are facing at the pump. John Cornyn has a choice: help Texas families by voting for the Climate Security Act which includes $800 billion in tax relief to help consumers afford increasing energy costs or stand idly by as Texas families struggle to pay at the pump," said Tony Gray, of the Rick Noriega for Senate campaign.
"Time and time again John Cornyn has failed to stand up for Texas families, instead caving to pressure from corporate special interests looking to line their pockets. Texas families deserve better. Instead of looking out for his buddies in the Big Oil and Gas industry who have donated more to Cornyn than almost any other Senator, it's time Texas families had a real advocate for them in the U.S. Senate," added Gray.
Cornyn: A History of Failure on Solutions to Soaring Gas Prices
Cornyn Voted for $5 Billion in Tax Breaks for Big Oil. In 2006, Cornyn voted for the conference report on H.R. 4297, which included $5 billion in tax breaks for big oil. Cornyn voted for the conference report, even though Republicans added back in two tax loopholes that have allowed the oil industry to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. The conference report passed 54-44. [H.R. 4297, Vote #118, 5/11/2006]
Big Oil and Gas has Given Cornyn Over $1 Million. John Cornyn has accepted $1,239,675from the oil and gas industry according to the Center for Responsive Politics – that makes Cornyn one of the top three recipients of oil and gas funds in the U.S. Senate. [Center for Responsive Politics, Accessed 6/3/08]
Cornyn Voted Against Temporary Windfall Profits Tax on Oil Companies. In 2005, Cornyn voted against implementing a temporary 50 percent tax on oil company profits from the sale of crude oil. Funds collected from the tax would be used to provide a consumer tax credit for petroleum products. Both Senators Obama and Clinton voted for the windfall profits tax. The motion failed 35-64. [S. 2020, Vote #331, 11/17/2005]
Cornyn Voted Against Temporary Release of Oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve. In 2005, Cornyn voted to kill an amendment that would have urged the president to release one million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve everyday for thirty days and would have urged the president to encourage OPEC to increase their oil production. Both Senators Obama and Clinton supported releasing the additional oil and voted against killing the amendment. The motion to kill the amendment passed 57-39. [H.R. 6, Vote #147, 6/22/2005]
Cornyn Voted Against Energy Bill Aimed At Increasing Fuel Economy Standards by $13B in Subsidies for Major Oil and Gas Companies. In 2007, Cornyn voted against a motion to invoke cloture (thus limiting debate) on the Reid, D-Nev., motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment with an additional amendment to the bill that would require new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards of 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks, and require the production and use of 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022. It would direct the Energy Department to set new energy efficiency standards. The additional amendment would strike a provision that would require utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from alternative sources by 2020. It also would increase to $21.8 billion a package of tax incentives that would be offset in part by eliminating or reducing $13 billion in subsidies for major oil and gas companies. The motion was rejected 59-40. [CQ.com; HR 6, Vote #425, 12/13/07]
Texans are Paying Heavy Price for Do-Nothing Energy Policy
$3,261 more per household per year. Households in Texas are paying $3261 more per year for gasoline than when President Bush took office. Texas families now pay on average $5246 per year. [Department of Energy, Household Vehicles Energy Consumption 2001, Table 5.2, August 2005]
A $2.18-or-164 percent per gallon increase in gas prices. Since President Bush took office, gas prices in Texas have increased by $2.18 per gallon, an increase of 164 percent. [EIA Petroleum Marketing Monthly, May, 2001; AAA Fuel Gauge Report, 5/6/08]
$2.1 billion more per month. Families, businesses, and farmers in Texas will spend $2.1 billion more on gasoline in May 2008 than they spent in January 2001. [Department of Energy, Motor Gasoline Consumption, Price, and Expenditures 2002]
$24.6 billion more spent on gasoline this year. If prices remain at current levels, $24.6 billion more will be spent on gasoline in Texas this year than was spent in 2001.Texas consumers, farmers, and businesses are on track to pay $39.5 billion for gasoline this year. [Department of Energy, Motor Gasoline Consumption, Price, and Expenditures 2002]

that Hillary does not want Barack to choose another woman as VP. It really is all about her.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/139908
sorry no toolbar this afternoon - no links working
She's trying to blackmail Barack but he's too savvy for that.
And if he does chose one of the many qualified women, nothing would be better for all the Hillary supporters who supported her solely because she was a woman. That argument would be mute because it would be a BETTER woman. I would love to see a female VP. Not Hillary. That is a sure way to lose the election.
I've been posting away on the old thread.
If anyone's interested, they can check my last couple posts there.
*******
cC: looks like Roger made it to the semis! Keeping my fingers crossed because Monfils is a wild card, although the French would be delighted to see him go to the finals.
*******
Now gone. Have safe ones!
BTW, we won our lawsuit and the County decided not to appeal. Yeargh!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a battle of the Democratic Party fighting a Democratic majority Board. Good Democrats replacing bad ones HAS to be an ongoing goal. Especially considering the one huge supporter we had on the Board was a Republican.
Can't even *steal* a toolbar. . . .
These dudes need to go to China, where every improvement is an UNimprovement. . . .
e.g. ~~ these multilane big merge areas, that ran perfectly smoothly, until: you guessed it -- the street keeper peeps wanted to go all MODERN. And installed traffic lights. Whereupon, nothing ever worked well again. Major snarls in all directions as far as the eye could see. . . .
So: we had a functioning blog four years ago. Hardly ever a glitch with anything. Now we have peeps that can't sign in, who have to duplicate themselves to sign in. ETC.
All under a new, meaningless logo that looks like a six year old drew it (on a bad day).
As I said: poop!
is a catchall term that includes a variety of digestive problems such as stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, belching, appetite loss, and nausea. ...
but I was hopeful in the past and now I am just getting ticked! Up to 7 people can't vote in the scholarship thing, many more cannot log in, it duplicated my AuditAZ group and double posted my blog post, the tags I inserted didn't work, I am trying to rate you all up on your posts and it isn't working half the time, and when you do a blog post it used to give you the option to send to your group, to people personally, etc and now it does not. I haven't even figured out how to do a general email. On top of that it is really slow loading. Oh well. It is still nice seeing so many old "faces" here again, lol.
That's funny. Today I have a toolbar, but ya never know.
Apparently, the stumbling block to Hillary becoming VP, which none of the brilliant pundits who have been hyping Hillary for even thought of, is the vetting process.
In order to even be considered, Hillary will have to disclose EVERYTHING to Obama -- meaning Bill's financial dealings and presidential library records, including who financed it. These are secrets the Clintons can't reveal -- because even if they did, it would disqualify her.
Isn't it ironic that the vetting occurs more so with the VP than the POTUS? How many times did she say *I've been vetted...* I think she protested too much. The Obama campaign probably has a lot of info on the Clintons. They knew she wouldn't be serious about the VP slot.
- Howard Dean said Gore had the presidency snatched from him.
By floridagal . on Jun 4, 2008 9:44 PM EDTI was glad he said that at the DNC meeting. It has not been said enough. People on the media have too often stayed away from the topic.

What a relief! No more Terry. No more seeing a campaign manager on tee vee yucking it up with his tropical shirt on. No more seeing him holding a bottle of Rum. No more taking shots and being obnoxious. Oh joy! ;-) He's an embarrassment to all political operatives.
He was in Arizona what seemed like every other day and the Dem Party sending out some invites pretending it was for the Party but it was really him just shilling for Hillary.
When I got a fundraising thing from the DNC (who I contribute to) I told them to never, ever send me any solicitation with his ugly mug on it and I hope his book fails! I think it did, lol.
Kimmy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad you are doing great. We need to add each other back into our friends list.
Congrats on the new marriage. He looks like a cutie.
I agree with this:
Is it just me? When Obama speaks it is GREAT stuff and obviously his intelligence, grace and manner are awesome.. However, do any other Deaniacs get a little..I dont know.. NOT so excited because Dean said all this stuff before ? My new ..husband (wow what a weird word) is all gung ho flipping out, clapping, getting all overheated and Im stoked to, watching Obama, but he's over the top ala Dean 2002 passionate about it. heheh So no faking the big O, ladies, but I may be faking some of the excitement. haha
Dean was the original, yet I can appreciate why people go gaga over Obama (remember I had a crush on him in 2003 until he pissed me off with some of his statements against Dean?). I get their enthusiasm because the words he uses are what Dean used in 2003 that brought me in so especially all these young people...yeah, I get it. I am so happy he is the nominee and not Clinton. I would have hated to vote for McCain. ;)

Turia heartened by Obama's success
Maori Party co-leader says having Barack Obama run for US President is a giant leap for people of colour in the world
5 June 2008
...
The Maori Party co-leader says it is one small step for America, and a giant leap for people of colour the world over. She says it is hard to believe that it is looking likely that a black man will be the next president of the United States.
Mrs Turia says Barack Obama has the appeal of Martin Luther King, the backing of the Kennedy clan, and the rapturous support of millions of black Americans, as well as growing support from new voters wanting hope and change.
She says Senator Obama has a lot of prejudices to overcome and unrealistic fears to put to bed, but if anyone can do it, he can.
of a lot of qualities that attract people. I still have issues with past votes (Oman) and concerns about policy, but as this campaign has unfolded from just last summer I have seen him move further and further to the progressive side so maybe he feels bouyed by all the progressive support and will represent us well. I am hopeful.
I want to live in New Zealand.
- I chuckled to hear that many of the folks in his father's land
By Jo*in*Vermont on Jun 4, 2008 10:19 PM EDTwere supposedly hung over this morning from the great celebration of Obama's victory last night! according to cnn's roving band, even the different tribes who have grave differences are in total agreement on Obama - they have something wonderful in common, something to be proud of in this son of their land!
I think the world is smiling today.
"The Maori Party co-leader says it is one small step for America, and a giant leap for people of colour the world over. She says it is hard to believe that it is looking likely that a black man will be the next president of the United States."
It's a tribute to Howard Dean when he is emulated.
hope to see her back soon - these be exciting times and I want to hear what she thinks about 'em!
Karen - a tribute indeed! and that 50 state thingy must be looking good to those naysayers right about now....
Cheryl - I have the same hopes for Obama as well, but I'm certainly not going to turn a blind eye, so to speak. no more free passes for politicians! GObama, you can do it - be a good pres!
Finally read all the threads -- best news -- Barack pulling Leibermann to the sidelines for a little tete a tete. And Schweitzer apparently winning the Montana primary for Gov handily. Nite all.

Pushing Bush to Attack Iran
By Dan Froomkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Wednesday, June 4, 2008; 11:57 AM
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to use his White House visit today to push President Bush to take a more aggressive approach toward Iran -- and there are some signs that he'll have a receptive audience.
Both Olmert and Bush are badly wounded and looking for salvation. Olmert is facing corruption allegations that could drive him from office. Bush is wildly unpopular, desperate to salvage his legacy and fighting irrelevance as the general election begins in earnest -- with even the Republican candidate trying to keep him at a distance.
It's in this environment that the Jewish Telegraph Agency reports: "Ehud Olmert will urge President Bush to prepare an attack on Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported.
"Citing sources close to the Israeli prime minister, Yediot Achronot reported on its front page Wednesday that Olmert, who is due to hold closed-door talks with Bush in Washington, will say that 'time is running out' on diplomatic efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program.
"The United States should therefore prepare to attack Iran, Olmert will tell Bush, according to Yediot."
