Who am I?

Peter Shumlin is a small business owner, public servant and father of two from Putney, Vermont. A committed entrepreneur, Peter was the longtime co-director, along with his brother, of Putney Student Travel and National Geographic Student Expeditions, a company that sends students on educational programs and service projects across the globe. He is also a partner in several real estate companies that provide housing and commercial space in Southeast Vermont.

His career in public service began almost 30 years ago when at the age of 24 he was elected to serve on the towns select board. In 1990, Governor Madeleine Kunin appointed Peter to fill an empty seat in the Vermont House of Representatives, where he served for 3 years. He then served Windham County for 8 terms in the VT Senate and was elected by his colleagues to lead the Senate as President Pro Tem the majority of that time.

Peter, 55, is the father of two daughters Olivia, 20, and Rebecca, 19. In his free time he enjoys running, hiking and cross country skiing. He likes to fish, hunt and garden and can sometimes be found spreading manure and cutting hay at his farm.

Peter is the 81st Governor of Vermont.

Why am I running?

Statement from Governor Shumlin on why he is running for re-election:

"I am pleased to announce today that I plan to seek reelection for the office of Governor. It has been a privilege to serve the people of Vermont over the past 16 months. I am proud of what we have accomplished together. Yet there is more work to do and I look forward to continuing our jobs agenda: creating jobs and more economic opportunities for Vermonters, containing the skyrocketing cost of health care, continuing Irene recovery, expanding broadband and cell service across our state, and investing in our renewable energy future and childrens education. I will continue to focus on these initiatives."

My Goals

As Governor, Peter is determined to get tough things done. Since his inauguration, he has been working hard to create jobs for those who need them and raise incomes for those who have jobs, control skyrocketing health care costs, expand broadband and cell service to every corner of the state, reduce recidivism and make critical investments in our renewable energy future and our childrens education.

Taken together, these and other key goals represent an ambitious agenda to create a brighter economic future for Vermonters.

My DFA Values

This legacy campaign is missing this information

My Campaign is People Powered!

The heart of Governor Shumlin's campaign team is the thousands of volunteers throughout the state who help make calls, host events, go door-to-door and spread our message one person at a time. Governor Shumlin won in 2010, in part, because of the many volunteers and dedicated organizers that assisted in reaching out to neighbors, knocking on doors, making those phone calls and emailing friends.

This reelection campaign will be no exception. We are already creating a field organization that will utilize volunteers as the foundation of our reelection effort. Vermonters have invited us into their homes to share our vision, raise money, and make connections with Vermonters across the state.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
