Who am I?

Im Dr. David Gill. Im an ER physician from Bloomington, IL.

I know what its like to struggle because of what Ive been through in my own life. When I was just 13, my father died of cancer. I went to work as a dishwasher at a Big Boy restaurant to help pay my familys bills.

I knew I wanted to be a doctor from the age of six. It wasnt an easy road to get there. I stocked shelves at K-Mart to help put myself through college at the University of Illinois where I got my bachelors degree in math. I mopped floors in the middle of the night and did rich kids laundry to get through medical school.

Ive served as a family practice doctor and emergency room physician for 20 years. I see the problems with our health care system every day. Ive also lived through it.

When my first wife, Polly, was diagnosed with cancer, we struggled to get her the proper treatments. I had to fight with the insurance company to get them to pay for the care she needed. I got a bill for $17,000 in my mailbox while I was planning her funeral and grieving with our three children.

Ive seen what happens when patients cant afford the medication they need to stay healthy. I know too many families who are just a paycheck or serious illness away from financial disaster.

Ive been lucky in my life to get to live out my American dream. But for too many other families, their American Dreams are dying. They cant find good jobs. They struggle to get their kids the education they will need to get ahead. They are increasingly frustrated that politicians in DC wont work together to tackle the problems our nation faces.

Ive never been on a government payroll or worked for a politician. I dont take orders from politicians or corporate interest groups. And I dont take a penny of their money, either.

Im a doctor, father, husband and neighbor who is ready to bring a healthy dose of common sense to Washington, DC. Im ready to Clean Up Congress and make it work for middle-class families again. Id be honored to have your support in this open seat race in Illinois new 13th CD.

Why am I running?

Congress just isnt working for working people anymore.Im ready to fix that. Im tired of seeing the wealthiest fewthe millionaires and the multi-national corporationsrig the system and force middle-class families, students and retirees on fixed incomes to pay the price.

I believe entrenched politicians of both parties have lost sight of who they are really supposed to be working for and what makes this country truly greatthe people I meet every day at the ER and on the campaign trail.

Im running to revive the fading American Dream and make sure DC is setting the right priorities for our families again. I hope I can count on your help to get to Washington and Clean up Congress.

My Goals

For too long, Congress has been up for sale to the Wall Street Bankers and the corporate special interests. And middle-class families and working people have paid the price.

I wont take a penny from Wall Street or corporate PACs. I will work to limit the influence big money has on our government so we can reset our priorities to get people working again, to invest in education from kindergarten through college, to rebuild our nations crumbling infrastructure and fuel innovation and a rebirth of manufacturing by rethinking our flawed approach to global trade policy.

My DFA Values

This legacy campaign is missing this information

My Campaign is People Powered!

I won a tough primary against an establishment-backed conservative Democrat who outspent me 4 to 1. If it wasnt for the staunch support of thousands of volunteers giving their money and their time to my campaign, we wouldnt have prevailed.

I know my Republican opponent will say anything, and take money from anyone to win. I need your help to push back, fight hard and win this new Democratic-leaning open seat in November.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
