Marcia Moody for State Legislature
| Name: | Marcia Moody for State Legislature |
| Office: | State Legislature |
| Website: |
Background:
In 2004 I was inspired by Howard Dean to run at the last minute as a write-in candidate for the New Hampshire House of Representatives and won. This coming year's race will give me an advantage of running as an incumbent with a voting record that I can use as a testimony to my beliefs. I will emphasize how important it is to change the make-up of the House to get a democratic balance, if not a majority of Democrats in order to pass a progressive agenda. All too often this year good legislation was thwarted because of the two thirds majority of Republicans in both the House and the Senate. My chances of success depends on how effectively I can get my message out to my constituents and who will be running against me
Goals:
Reasons for Running:.
The reason I am running again is that I feel that I have only just begun to learn the process on enacting important legislation. It takes at least one full term to become familiar with the way the committees work, how to prepare your testimony and arguments before the House. My goals in office are to pass good legislation, help defeat bad bills that will have harmful consequences to the citizens of New Hampshire, and to craft bills to improve and make accessible affordable health insurance for everyone. I also want to protect the environment, especially the water, air and the wetlands. I want to prevent exploitation of the land and turning our resources into nothing but commodities for profit. Being on the Resources Recreation and Development Committee gives me this opportunity.
Issues:
My Platform:
My platform is to protect and preserve all that makes New Hampshire and its people great. My three issues are: 1. Making health insurance available and affordable for everyone. 2. Protecting the environment and crafting legislation to that end. 3. Doing everything I can to help pass an increase to the minimum wage.
Grassroots Support:
Grassroots was responsible for my getting into politics in the first place. It was because of the inspiration of Howard Dean, his campaign for President and his urging everyone to take an active role and run for office ourselves that made me run as a write-in candidate for the NH House in 2004 and get elected. I truly believe that the future of the Party lies in the hands of grassroots candidates. I am currently supporting Carol Shea Porter, an excellent grassroots candidate for the 1st Congressional District in NH. I supported our Governor, John Lynch in 2004 a grassroots candidate and a "Dean Dozen" selection. Grassroots is the most viable and active of the movements in the country. I received all my support in my first campaign from grassroots people. They are vital to my campaign for re-election. I have been very fortunate in this campaign cycle to have been chosen as one of the first 10 candidates to receive the endorsement of DFNH (Democracy for New Hampshire). I really appreciate their support as they are one of the most active and one of the most politically aware groups in the state.
DFA Values:
I am Socially Progressive:
I am a social progressive because I believe in helping others less fortunate to be able to achieve the American Dream. To me this means that everyone is entitled to a good education and should be given the means to achieve it through scholarships, student loans and adequate educational funding for all schools in New Hampshire. Being a social progressive means you believe that everyone who works hard all his or her life is entitled to be able to retire with dignity. Being socially progressive means that you believe that everyone should be paid a living wage. No one should have to work three jobs just to have a roof over their heads and to put food on the table. Socially progressive people believe that bigotry has no place in the home, schools, the workplace, the neighborhood or in the government. Socially progressive people do not advocate religious fanaticism that excludes whole segments of society. Socially progressive people believe that no government has the right to interfere with a woman's right to determine her own health issues. What I did personally that was socially progressive was to craft a bill that would have stopped some of the corporate welfare, and made companies that could well afford it, dedicate a certain percentage of their payroll towards health care for their employees. It was HB 1704 the Fare Share Health Care Bill.
I am Fiscally responsible:
Being fiscally responsible means that we should stop privatizing the profits and socializing the costs. Tax breaks should not be just for the super wealthy and the burden of supporting our government should not be laid on the backs of the middle class. Being fiscally responsible means setting priorities for government spending that benefits the people that are paying for that very government. Fiscally responsible people do not object to taxes per se. What they do want, is for everyone to pay their fair share. Being fiscally responsible means balanced budgets and not running up debts that will be passed on to our grandchildren for generations to come. At the state level, I have been fiscally responsible by voting for legislation that would have restored funding for nursing homes and the disabled that would have assured continuing matching federal funds to support these programs. The Republicans cut these programs from the Governor's budget and lost the matching funds to the tune of at least $13 million. This means the support of these programs will fall back to the county and local governments and cause property taxes to rise to new heights.
