Amy Manuel for Denton County Commissioner - Pct 2

Name: Amy Manuel for Denton County Commissioner - Pct 2
Office: Denton County Commissioner - Pct 2
Website: AmyManuel.com

Background:

I am not a politician. I am a business systems analyst that two years ago decided that enough was enough. I had to get involved.

I am a person of action that will not wait for someone else to solve a problem. If there is an issue, I look for a way to resolve it, set up a plan of action and implement it.

I have no patience for those that wish to talk a thing to death and get nothing done. So much can be accomplished if we take the initiative and act.

For over a decade and a half I have supported financial systems, human resources systems and records management systems for Fortune 500 companies in Texas.

The knowledge that I have picked up in the process will be invaluable to my roll as county commissioner. The commissioners court is responsible for records management and for budget.

Currently, I serve on The Colony Cultural Arts Board. Prior to my work in information systems, I taught ballet, tap and jazz to children as young as 3 years old and to senior citizens and all ages inbetween.

I am a well rounded individual with a bachelor's degree from Lamar University.

Goals:

I am running because I could no longer sit on the sidelines and watch. I am a person of action. I believe that change is needed in the way our county government operates. In a number of areas, the standard best practices that I have learned in the business world will improve the way that our county is run.

The primary goal I have is to leave the county better than I found it when I started. I want to make Denton County a better place to live for all of its citizens and not just a few at the top.

Issues:

1) Veterens Assistance:
Veterens assistance is one of the obligations of the commissioners court. I want to make certain that the veterens and their families are well cared for and that we do not skimp on tests, treatments or medications.

2) The Road Home Should Not Be a Toll Road:
We already pay for our roads with federal, state, county and city taxes. We should not be asked to pay again just to use the road.

3) Protect the Female, not the Pharmacist:
All over North Texas pharmacists are refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control and emergency contraception.

The state legislature tried to pass a "conscience clause" to protect the pharmacists that do this.

I believe that the government should be more concerned with the rights of the female than those who wish to impose their personal morals on others.

I would like to see our county government resolve to not do business with pharmacies where these events occur.

Grassroots Support:

I started a club for my part of the county called CTC Democrats. The club will play a significant role in my campaign.

DFA Values:

As a social progressive, I believe that we should have freedom from head to toe. Any decision including medical decisions, or choice of partner, or religion or end of life should be ours alone. If this is an ownership society, then we should at a minimum own our own bodies and minds.

Fiscal responsibility requires that we work within a budget. In order to spend wisely, all county work orders and jobs should be posted for open bidding. The background of the top candidates should be checked to be certain that their business does not have a history of corrupt practices.
