BUSH SAYS WALL STREET ‘GOT DRUNK’
By Stephanie Kirchgaessner in WashingtonPublished: July 23 2008 01:19 | Last updated: July 23 2008 01:19 President George W. Bush said Wall Street had “got drunk” and was experiencing a hangover at a recent closed-door fundraiser in Houston in which he also made light of the US housing crisis.
In a video recording that emerged on Tuesday, Mr Bush questioned how long Wall Street banks would remain sober and “not try to do all these fancy financial instruments”.

Senators move to rename Sierra peakLegislation aims to turn North Palisade into Brower Palisade to honor ex-Sierra Club leader.By Michael Doyle / Bee Washington Bureau<!--/STORYHEADLINE--><!--STORYBODY-->07/23/08 23:33:15<!-- START /pubsys/assets/common/related_content.comp --><!-- no related content to display --><!-- no related content to display --><!-- no gallery to display --><!-- no PDFs to display --><!-- no related content to display --><!-- no AP video related content to display --><!-- no related content to display --><!-- no poll to display --><!-- no related content to display --><!-- no gallery to display --><!-- no related content to display --> <!-- END /pubsys/assets/common/related_content.comp --><!-- begin /pubsys/assets/ad_components/textads_storylevel_ibox.comp | add section no. to this to make text ads disappear --><!-- end /pubsys/assets/ad_components/textads_storylevel_ibox.comp -->WASHINGTON -- California's two Democratic senators want to rename a prominent Sierra Nevada peak after David Brower, reigniting debate over the legacy of the late Sierra Club leader.
Beloved in some circles, despised in others, Brower shaped the national environmental movement for several volatile decades.
He also relished climbing glacial peaks like North Palisade, which at 14,242 feet is the fourth-tallest in California. <!-- no related content to display -->
Brower, who died in Berkeley eight years ago, was long associated with efforts to protect Yosemite National Park and other California wilderness areas. He was an avid mountain climber who bagged many Sierra peaks, sometimes with the simplest equipment -- sneakers, for instance.
"Naming the North Palisade Peak after David Brower is a fitting tribute to a man who loved the High Sierra and all of America's wilderness," Sen. Barbara Boxer said in a written statement.
Boxer joined her colleague, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, in introducing the legislation this week that would convert North Palisade into Brower Palisade. The mountain abuts Kings Canyon National Park in easternmost Fresno County.

- Sorry about the junk. I thought it was clean. I sure wish HQ would fix this new program.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 24, 2008 10:27 AM EDTThere is nothing to fix. For security reasons we can only allow a certain subset of html tags. Anything else will be displayed as text.
We are currently working on an "edit" feature for the comments, but do not have a time when it will be released yet.
- FYI - we never had this issue in the past
By Denise in San Mateo County on Jul 24, 2008 1:13 PM EDTThat's why people think something needs to be fixed. Which it does. Editing was an option too, until lately.
But then again, if it ain't broke don't fix it no longer fits this situation.
The old website had huge security holes in it. We can not go back to the wide open html that was allowed in the past.
Getting 'code' in your text is not the correct way to do things, Tim.
- Please do try to be less clinical. What you write comes off very cold.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 24, 2008 2:20 PM EDTThe easy way is to not allow any html and just strip it from all postings. Most blogs do not even allow this much html to be used.
I am here to help. I am not the enemy. I am not cold or clinical, I am being professional.
True. But the old preview feature would take a lot of surprises out. Google has it; haloscan has it; another blog I use has it, plus as many features as this one (and the software's free like blogger and haloscan). My dating site as virtually NO HTML, but you *can* edit for up to 15 minutes.
It may not be buggy to you, but starting last December, it's sure *FELT* buggy to us. . . .
Thanks for talking to us. It does help.
He is so much fun.
Great news roundup as usual Gerry. Karl Rove read into the Congressional Record to avoid testifying. Only trouble was -- he wasn't under oath was he? Story on Italy putting troops 'in country' for law enforcement (crack down on immigrants) -- why don't their cops do the cracking down. And I don't think immigrant = Romas (gypsies). Romas traditionally have no homeland. But I'll bet the ones being targeted especially the children were born in Italy. They ARE a nuisance for this tourist anyway.
- The Democratic Party supports programs that encourage all Americans to reach their full potential with appropriate protections and incentives for them to achieve the fulfillment of human dignity.
By Phil Specht on Jul 24, 2008 12:11 PM EDTnice if we could get the same attitude towards posters on the blog, as from the Statement of Principles from the Iowa Platform I referenced on the last thread.

Senator Obama is in Berlin, Germany for the first stop of his European tour. He’ll deliver remarks to an expected crowd of 100,000 people.

I know jjem! wouldn't do this, so I will.
Economic times are tough. I know that. But Democracyfest could use some help. So, if you have an extra $25 for a personal sponsorship or $50 for a Level 1 sponsorship (gets your name on the web site and in the program book) stop by http://www.democracyfest.net/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66 and help out.
Democracyfest started out as a blog project. Help if you can. I have.
I purchased my ticket last week.
My dear friend Mary has purchased two sponsorship tables for this fabulously fun and very famous yearly event again this year. Please stop buy the NWPC's tables to stock up. She will have lots of Obama gear and very fun Democratic stuff for you to purchase.
Rich - I'm not coming and I bought a ticket - so feel free to use my registration $ if you can.

- standing up to oppression-definitely on topic today with Obama in Berlin
By Phil Specht on Jul 24, 2008 2:54 PM EDTListening to our standard bearer's uplifting reminder of how American stood against the tyranny of dictatorship, I wonder how it is that an organization with democracy in its name could take such an undemocratic step as too arbitrarily assign someone in HQ's the responsibility of suppressing someone elses voice, at the site where the power of the blogosphere was born.
The other party is the top down one, go get a job with them if you have a need to feel your idea of speech is superior to another Americans.
There are 750,000 people who Howard Dean touched with his message "You have the power." he didn't say "give me the power", he said "you" and "you" and "you" and "you" and "you" and point
Howard Dean called us here. If you the current staff want to pull the plug on the work he started go ask him to come here and tell us he didn't really mean it, tell him to say "why don't you all just go home".
I've been involved with Democratic Party politics long enough to have run into a few party hacks on a power trip, but that has never stopped us the American people from perfecting the American dream by banding together for action. and in DFA you have the cream of the those activists.Good luck trying.
- I'm standing up clapping at my desk. Bravo
