Happy Arbor Day!

Linked to groups: California for Democracy

Today, April 25th, is Arbor Day, a day to celebrate trees.  I am writing to you today on behalf of the Nature Conservancy, an organization dear to my heart.  Thanks to thousands of caring supporters, more than 271,000 trees have been sponsored through The Nature Conservancy’s ambitious Plant A Billion campaign launched earlier this month.

Through the Plant A Billion project, where one dollar plants one native tree, The Nature Conservancy is working with partners in Brazil to protect and restore the Atlantic Forest, one of the world's biggest and most endangered tropical forests.

This is one of several Nature Conservancy projects currently underway to reverse deforestation and reestablish the great native rain forests that are the lungs of the earth.  Just one dollar plants a native tree that will remove thousands of pounds of carbon from the atmosphere over our lifetime.

I’ve set a personal goal of raising $1,000 this year for the Conservancy to plant 1,000 trees.  Together, a little bit at a time, we can plant a thousand trees that will sequester tons of carbon, helping to offset our personal carbon footprint and reduce our role in climate change.  Amazing how such a small investment can do so much over a lifetime!  Please join me in celebrating Arbor Day by making a donation today through the Nature Conservancy’s secure contribution site:

The Nature Conservancy is one of the largest and most respected conservation groups in the world.  Explore an interactive map of the Atlantic Forest to learn more about the Plant A Billion project and how the Nature Conservancy will put your investment to work to replant the Atlantic Forest in Brazil.

If you are already a member of The Nature Conservancy, or want to become one, you can take an extra step to celebrate Arbor Day and save existing trees by signing up to be a Nature Conservancy Monthly Donor.  By becoming a Monthly Donor, you can take your support of The Nature Conservancy paperless, reducing your use of trees and saving the Conservancy the cost of postage and mailing.  Plus, it will cut down on your mailbox clutter.  What a deal!

I hope you will join me in supporting this very worthy cause, and tell your family and friends about it, too.

Thank you, and Happy Arbor Day!

Self-Inflicted Confusion
By PAUL KRUGMAN
After Barack Obama’s defeat in Pennsylvania, David Axelrod, his campaign manager, brushed it off: “Nothing has changed tonight in the basic physics of this race.” ...The attacks from the Clinton campaign have been badminton compared with the hardball Republicans will play this fall. If the relatively mild rough and tumble of the Democratic fight has been enough to knock Mr. Obama off his pedestal, what hope did he ever have of staying on it through the general election?...http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/25/opinion/25krugman.html?th=&emc=th&pagewanted=print========================================I wrote an emai to Krugman

Paul,

I have been a fan of yours for many years, but this infactuation with Hillary has really shown your blind naive side and it hurts your credibility.

You (and others) express a patronizing belief that it is Hillary's duty to prepare Obama for the Fall, with negative attacks, to test his metal. Maybe the vice versa is true. If Hillary is serious about beating Obama, maybe he needs to test Hillary's metal (and simultaneously prove he's not a wimp.)

You say "The attacks from the Clinton campaign have been badminton compared with the hardball Republicans will play this fall."

The same goes for Hillary. Obama can run ads (showing Bill)"Do you want this man back in the White House" [followed by a clip of Bill pointing his finger saying "I did not have sex with that woman"]

Barack would never be so cruel and negative to run such an ad, but I am sure the Neocons would be happy to have her shed another [phony] tear in the Fall. The working class would love that. It would show how dysfunctional the former first family really was, and what an occupational hazard we could have waiting for us in the White House, were she elected.

Phil, the “association by guilt” have no time frame limitations (and rightly so, imo), not because of someone’s actions during sixties but because of ideas (which stays alive) behind those actions.

It is beginning to occur to me too, that Obama’s candidacy is becoming more and more prohibited over time for the big part of the establishment (both Reps and Demos).
They beginning to realize the danger of primarily implicit (so far) message his very persona explicitly encapsulates. It is not that Obama is a “black” candidate (and he is in fact not). It is that Obama BOTH(!), “black” AND “white” candidate simultaneously! It is in that UNITY idea the main danger resides.

Looking further, the above mentioned part of the establishment will undoubtedly try to use whatever tool they have to remove Obama.

Having him to stay is the same as leaving “The sword of Damocles” above their heads.
Having him to stay is the same as leaving the chance to declare some day to us, to “the People” that: IN OPPOSITION TO, AGAINST and INSTEAD OF letting corporations and corporate government TO EXPLOIT OUR DIFFERENCES time has come TO DEPLOY OUR COMMONALITY.

It is beginning to occur to me that defending Obama today is defending our future tomorrow!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
you nailed it former, exactly
this is a titanic struggle way bigger than the two candidates and since Hillary and McCain are on the same side it is the primary that counts for all the marbles
no way old McC wins the general
Obama is the future.
Obama Campaign's Memo to Superdelegates
April 24, 2008 7:13 p.m.
TO: Superdelegates
FR: Obama Campaign
RE: The strongest candidate to face John McCain
DA: April 24, 2008
Who's the strongest candidate to take on John McCain?
After 45 contests, Senator Obama has won more delegates, twice as many states and territories, and more of the popular vote. He's won in every part of the country, and has scored victories among every segment of electorate. He's inspired Democrats, Independents, and Republicans, building an unprecedented coalition of more than 1.4 million contributors. And when it comes to head-to-head match-ups versus John McCain, Obama performs better than Clinton in key states and shows the potential to put new states in play for Democrats up and down the ballot.
Polling data from across the country, from large states and small, reflects the advantage Senator Obama would bring in a race this fall. His ability to expand the Democratic base, and his ability to capture the crucial Independent vote, make him a stronger candidate than Senator Clinton, who would enter the fall campaign with the highest unfavorable ratings of any nominee in half a century.
Harvard survey: Young voters favor Obama over ClintonIll. senator does better in matchup with McCainEmail|Print|Single Page| Text size + By Susan Milligan Globe Staff / April 25, 2008
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama may have lost Pennsylvania, but Harvard's Institute of Politics gave him some encouraging news yesterday: Young voters overwhelmingly prefer him to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
more stories like this
The institute, which has been conducting extensive surveys of the youth vote for eight years, found that 70 percent of Democrats ages 18 to 24 favor Obama, compared with 30 percent for Clinton.
Obama's strength among young voters is evident on the campaign trail and has contributed to his wins.
In Iowa, for example, the under-30 vote tripled, helping him to an upset win in the caucuses.
"The youth vote has been central to [determining] who's going to be the next president of the United States, and who's going to be the nominee," said Jim Leach, director of the institute and a former Republican congressman from Iowa.
"We may be in the midst of a civic reawakening of a new generation," he said, citing statistics showing steady, dramatic growth in turnout among young voters since 2000.
Fred,
Excellent letter to Krugman. I have been noticing our newspaper has been publishing Krugman's column ONLY when he attacks Obama even on subjects Krugman is not known to be an expert on.
Yesterday was no exception, Krugman's letter was there. I cancelled our subscription today.
I am off for the weekend. going down to hertford to work on our house. Lot's to do.
Using as much energy saving products as we can to save money and the environment.
Also got a lot of stuff at the Restores in our area. All the money benefits the Habitat for Humanity houses.
they have a great one in Christiansburg, Va. Home Depot gives them overstocks and brand new items so if you need lighting, fans, etc. you can get stuff over half off.
So....help those folks out. You can google Habitat for Humanity and find a store near you.
Peace and Barack.
Why are the pundits not all over Hillary's electability issues? She clearly has a problem with young people (see linda b's link), African American voters (Barack got 92% in PA) and the more educated voters. Turn this narrative around, Barack!
==================
Obama's election would be a huge breaking of status quo ideas that we've been trained to apathetically accept. His election could be a "slippery slope" (Neocon perspective) or an avalanche of rejecting stoddy old truism (liberal perspective)
Mixed with liberal/progressive values, the corporate oligarchy old-guard probably sees Obama as the biggest threat since the New Deal, or maybe even, the Civil War.
I don't blame some Democrats/progressives for being scared, if they realize that, but Hillary is not the elixir for that fear.
Full speed ahead, damned the torpedos, is the only way forward from here.
Rice Plans May Trip on Middle East Peace Talks
By REUTERS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to London, Israel and the West Bank next week to discuss the Middle East peace process, the State Department said on Friday.
During the May 1-5 trip, Rice will meet in London with other members of the so-called Quartet of Middle East negotiators -- Russia, the United Nations and the European Union --on progress made since December, said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.
She will also visit Israel and the West Bank for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials on issues including the situation in the Gaza Strip, McCormack said.
Rice's trip is expected to be her last to the region before President George W. Bush goes there in mid-May.
BAGHDAD - The new U.S. Embassy complex does not have enough fortified living quarters for hundreds of diplomats and other workers, who must remain temporarily in trailers without special rooftop protection against mortars and rockets, government officials have told The Associated Press.
Sorting out the housing crunch and funding could further delay moving all personnel into the compound until next year and exposes shortcomings in the planning for America's more than $700 million diplomatic hub in Iraq.
Presidential Transition
Citing Risks, Study Suggests Ways To Ease National Security Handoff
By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 25, 2008; Page A21
The United States is "lurching toward a period of uncertainty and increased risk" in this election year and during the upcoming presidential transition, according to a new Congressional Research Service study that suggests counterterrorism responses that Congress, the Bush administration and its potential successors could take.
The report, released Monday, noted that new security officials and agencies put in place after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- such as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Counterterrorism Center and the Department of Homeland Security -- will soon undergo their first presidential handoff.
It quoted experts cautioning that the administration is focusing too much on administrative tasks for the transition and not enough on preparing its successors for likely security challenges. More work needs to be done with state and local officials, including contingency planning for any election disruption or incident, to which they would lead responses, the report said.
Wacky Canadians Still Believe in Privacy
By Al Kamen
Friday, April 25, 2008; Page A21
Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff caused a little ruckus up north a couple weeks ago as he was pushing his plan to share databases of international air travelers' fingerprints with the Canadians, Brits and Aussies.
In an interview with an excessively squeamish Canadian reporter, Chertoff was told: "Some are raising that the privacy aspects of this thing, you know, sharing of that kind of data, very personal data, among four countries is quite a scary thing."
I had dinner last night with a very good friend who's on one heck of a spiritual path.  An amazing woman.
Anyway, she said that people in her spiritual circles are all going for BO and if you read "What's Up On Planet Earth" Karen, who channels unseen forces, says the same thing.  Some of you may not believe in channeling (magical thinking stuff) but now that you know the "spirit" is for BO, will you change your minds?  LOL
I take it if he's the nominee, and I don't see how he can't be, the protesting in Denver will not occur, is that right?  That there will be bloodshed only if HC is the nominee?  What if no one is?
This 68 thing is troubling.
Seashell I also thought it was a comment you made. Sometimes it's not easy to differentiate, especially when lots of paragraphs are posted (and this does not pertain to only you)
Don't look at WHO is addressing you, look at WHAT is being addressed.
Your attitude here is part of the problem. From what I've seen the past few months, you seem to feel (on any given day, pick one);
Picked on
Misunderstood
That we need to be different than how we are
That you think we are saying YOU need to be different than how you are (we are not, at least not me)
Hopeless
Negative
A bit paranoid about the ways of the world
Ambivalent, and in the same moment, very concerned
We are all adults here aren't we? I know you're not Catholic so I won't say you're a martyr :)
