Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

Written by: Susan Rowe on Apr 24, 2008 12:59 PM EDT

UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? is a seven-part documentary produced by California Newsreel and aired nationally on PBS in late March and early April 2008.  This is a story about health, but it's not about doctors or drugs. It's about why some of us get sicker more often and die sooner in the first place. UNNATURAL CAUSES sheds light on mounting evidence of how inequities in our lives - the jobs we do, the wealth we enjoy, the neighborhoods we lives in - can get under the skin and disrupt our biology as surely as germs and viruses.

When asked why hasn't Barack *closed the deal*?

I reply, "It's a mathematical certainty that Obama will close the deal. But why couldn't Hillary, who a year ago had every advantage in name recognition, big donors, political and press machine, and institutional support, 'close the deal'?"

I've never gotten an answer.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
because she's running against Obama who is a once in a lifetime candidate, that's why. And I admire her for her perseverence  & very hard work. Another candidate would have given up long ago. I'm sure there are many here who wish she had. I back her in her long hard slog...
Not voting, or voting for a 3rd party candidate who articulates one's priorities and values is a choice, and an honorable one.
The Democratic Establishment takes progressive Democrats and Independents for granted--asuuming that we'll vote for whichever establishment candidates they throw at us, no matter how awful they are, rather than allow the Republican Barbarians to win.
One by one, and with the enthusiastic connivance of the media, the Democratic Establishment systematically destroyed the campaigns of the progressive candidates for president, leaving us the choice between 2 very flawed people. Now they're wringing their hands because the 2 survivors are clawing each other to ribbons, to the extent that whoever "wins" the nomination will probably lose to a 71 year-old, delusionary and demented neocon, masquerading as a moderate, and successfully enough to sucker in the "Reagan Democrats" and a significant fraction of independents.
As much as I admire Howard, he's a spent force politically. If he runs in '12, the media will hound and ridicule him and the Establishment Dems will do the same number on him that they did to Kucinich, Edwards, Richardson and Dodd.
The "scream" loop wil be repeated ad nauseam
jao,
Fine for you. I have found her to be increasingly disgusting and rather crazy for power. As Bill Richardson said on Larry King last night, the Clintons think they have a dynasty and should not be denied the contest.
Hillary and Bill Clinton need to seek professional mental health and soon. They are losing it, you can see it in their faces more and more every day.
having the choice to vote is sacred to me.
"Choice" is the operative word. I repeat:
Not voting, or voting for a 3rd party candidate who articulates one's priorities and values is a choice, and an honorable one.
I would feel justified in not voting (or more likely, voting for a 3rd party candidate) simply by virtue of the fact that the corrupt Democratic nomination process disenfranchised me very early on.
This fall's presidential election will be Hobson's choice for many of us.
the golden boy doesn't do so well.  Obama would need a food-taster/tester for sure.
change the goalpost, win at any cost - this woman and her campaign crew are simply out of their minds in their lust for power!  this campaign is going to leave mud on a lot of their careers as they continue tp postulate this crap with a straight face.  you know that nasty, demeaning 'c' word we women hate so much?  it pops into my head every single day lately - the trashiest of female insults pops into my head because it's the only word in my vocabulary I can find to describe how I feel about Hillary now.
It's way too late to save Democracy in this country. Bush has shredded the Constitution, and assumed dictatorial powers, aided and abetted by the feckless Democrats in Congress.
Neither remaining Democratic Candidate has pledged to restore the checks and balances that Bush has destroyed.
MORE DEMOCRATIC TREACHERY
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-sirota/hill-dc-dems-back-off-hea_b_98386.html
In a stunning - if predictable - story, the Hill newspaper reports that congressional Democrats are now saying that they will effectively thwart any effort to create a national health care program. Here is the key excerpt:
"Congressional Democrats are backing away from healthcare reform promises made by their two presidential candidates, saying that even if their party controls the White House and Congress, sweeping change will be difficult...Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), a member of Senate Democratic leadership and a key Hillary Clinton ally who also sits on the Finance Committee, said he is 'not sure we have the big plan on healthcare.'...'Healthcare I feel strongly about, but I am not sure that we're ready for a major national healthcare plan,' Schumer said...Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.), a Clinton supporter who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, said "the money is not necessarily there right now" to enact the plans.
Schumer, like a reliable Fox News anchor, tells us that America isn't "ready" for national health care plan, despite polls over the last decade showing strong support for such a concept. Likewise, Meek - , claims the federal government doesn't have the cash to pay for a health care overhaul - even as Congress continues writing blank checks to fund the Iraq War.
WHY SHOULD INDEPENDENTS VOTE FOR THESE IDIOTS???????????
Fortunately, people die and new generations take over.  LOL
It may well be hard work for Hillary Clinton to put on her face every morning, choose which Easter egg colored outfit to wear and learn her new lines for the day, but when it comes to achievement, there's precious little to show.
Yes, and are the candidates being asked if they will restore democracy. We anointed the corporations with personhood, and turned the $$$$ into speech. will the candidates right that wrong? Will they impeach? It would be worth having another debate if someone would ask some real questions,
health care has ballooned to a two trillion dollar a year enterprise.  The whole federal government is only three.  Of course, the Congress is leary taking on such a task.  The fall elections are an opportunity to elect some people with courage.
We certainly don't want a replay of the Clinton's 100 day effort in 1993.
Democrats to thwart a national health care plan? There isn't enough money for it?
Fine, now we know what we have to do. No point in electing new Dems. There needs to be a national effort to begin whatever action necessary to strip the Critters of all of their benefits and put the money saved into the people's health care. I know they vote for all of their amenities, but each one has to explain it to their district. If the people say off with your benefits or you're out, some will listen.
It's a sad state when we elect Dems, a majority, and a president and we're told their isn't wnough money. Stop the d#%^ed war!!!!!
Shumer wouldn't think of doing that.
NEW (PROGRESSIVE) PARTY NEEDED NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
==========================
We're trying it in Vermont and it ain't working imo. I almost left the Democratic party because of the non-impeachment of these thugs. All those that are wide eyed not believing what they're seeing these past seven years...there's ten (or more) for every one of you that gobble up the CM slop dished to them every night. It's the MEDIA!!! Break up the media control or nothing else matters...said it way back at Dean for America meetups...and saying it even more so now. When the media can convince intellegent people that 9-11 wasn't an inside job even when the facts are accessible on the internet...no hope. The only reason I'm backing Obama is that he's bringing in masses of new people to the process, especially the youth...that's the only hope I can see!
I saw some the the health documentary.. it's great... builds the case for the progressive value of Equality.  Inequality causes stress, worrying about not having health care causes stress, etc. Stress takes years off your life.
 It clearly and scientifically shows how the Failed Conservative Value of inequality has failed. The conservative value of authoritarianism has health effects..  Values have consequences.
