92 reasons to oppose the Fair Tax

Written by: Jim Nichols on Apr 24, 2008 10:54 AM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy for America - Georgia Chapter

Actually since there were 105,480,101 households in America in 2000 there are actually--by my calculations--about 97,041,692 reasons (or should I say households) to oppose the Fair Tax; or any sort of consumption tax.

Don't follow what I mean? I know, unfortunately at least a few supporters probably hope you don't.  I'll turn to the tax policy center and their online issue brief: National Retail Sales Tax: Who would bear the burden?

Under a national retail sales tax, the wealthiest households in the country would receive stunningly large tax cuts. Households in the top 1 percent of the income distribution have an average income of about $475,000. Their average tax cut would be $79,000, or more than the incomes of all but about 8 percent of households. Put another way, the roughly 1.1 million taxpayers in this top 1 percent would save a total of $87 billion on their taxes each year. This cut would be financed by tax increases on the bottom 92 percent of households. Households with income between $5,000 and $50,000 would face an average tax increase of over $1,000.

If someone turns to you and asks why you don't want the Fair Tax... "cause like its Fair" and "who would be against that."  Just smile and respectfully say...

"Speaking as just one of the 92% of us in this country who would actually get a tax hike from it... I'd have to say no its not, and no it wouldn't be."

OBAMA BLOWS OFF EARTH DAY

http://www.counterpunch.org/blair04242008.html

I've quelled my concerns with many policies Obama has embraced, opting to take friends' and colleagues' advice that he is the only candidate that will bring change that I agreed is needed.

I was particularly thrilled that I would get to see Obama on Earth Day. He has oft acknowledged the planetary carbon crisis and he was coming to the town that is the center of the largest concentration of coal fired capacity in the world. Rarely, are politicians give such wonderful opportunities to speak directly to such issues to a national audience.

But, Obama was mum on the environment and everything else that could have been discussed on Earth Day. Oh, he did mention renewable energy and a "planet in peril." I had heard him say those things a thousand times.

Did he even know it was Earth Day?

I tried to dismiss the lack of an Earth Day message as a personal bias on my part. But what I failed to understand why his handlers had failed to even recognize that it was Earth Day.

Instead of trying to keep a smiley face on his big loss in Pennsylvania, acting like it did not matter that his candidacy is on the ropes, Obama could have diverted attention away from the Clinton Pennsylvania win with a strong Earth Day statement during his appearance in Evansville.

Obama flies around in a Boeing 757. He has business to conduct and there is no fault in using such a plane to get from here to there with an entourage of staff and reporters in tow.

However, I was told today by an air traffic controller at the Evansville tower that they were informed by the plane's crew that they would leave the engines running during his stay in Evansville so that a quick exit could be made.

Opportunities like those presented last night in Evansville do not occur very often and frankly he blew this one big time. On Earth Day, instead of planting seeds for a green revolution, he left his engines running on the tarmac.

Don't think he had time to plant trees on April 22,  seems I recall a primary going on then. MSM must be getting pretty desperate to write such nonsense.

Is Hillary Clinton Push Polling? by Paul Loeb

North Carolina activist David LaMotte just got a push poll call from the firm of Geoff Garin, the new head of Hillary Clinton's campaign team. It wasn't as bad as asking "would it change your mind if you knew John Kerry actually bought his Vietnam medals off E-Bay." Or "How do you feel about John McCain's illegitimate black children?" But it was a push poll nonetheless, even if it also had elements of information gathering and message testing. . This isn't the first time that the Clinton campaign or their allies have had pollsters offering positive information about Clinton and negative information about her opponents--they did it on the eve of the California primary and in South Carolina. (And firms linked to the Giuliani campaign made highly negative push poll calls against Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire) But it's a disturbing practice precisely because it tries to spin the recipient under the pretense of merely asking about their views. ...full article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-loeb/...

Open Left has an interesting quote from Bill Clinton about John McCain. What left me stone cold when I read this? How disgraceful the Clinton campaign tactics have been against a fellow Dem.

Bill Clinton on John McCain:

"She and John McCain are very close," Clinton said. "They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other."

I also called the local voter reg. people and asked some questions and this is what I found out.

1.  Indys are coming out strong to register democratic; very few are registering as repugs.

2.  Dems are NOT registering as repugs.

3.  Repugs are coming out in DROVES to register as dems.

Here is the question:

Who are those droves of repugs going to vote for?

Barack, becuz they think McCain would beat him the easiest?

Hillary,  becuz they think McCain would beat him the easiest?

Barack or Hillary becuz they really like the candidate over McC?

Or are they becoming dems becuz they no longer can stand the repug party?

All of the above?

How many states have this cross-over thingie?  Lots of room for mischief and we know the repugs are good at that.

HURON, very good posts.  :-)

I just love it when Chuck Schumer and Meeks make a statement and then it's applied to 'Congressional Democrats' making it sound like they all agree and it's a done deal.  even Sirota gets a bit brainless in his exaggeration at times!

dissension in the ranks:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080424/ap_on_el_pr/republicans_obama_7

North Carolina GOP leadership divided over Obama ad

By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer

55 minutes ago

RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina Republican leaders are standing by a TV ad critical of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama despite dissension in their own ranks and one station's refusal to air it.

Republican National Committee member Linda Shaw said Thursday she was shocked that her colleagues decided to produce and air the ad, which shows Obama with his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and a clip of Wright's anti-U.S. comments.

"I do not support it," Shaw said. "I had nothing to do with it ... and I'm very disappointed."

Shaw, a longtime party leader, said she repeatedly urged state party chairwoman Linda Daves to withdraw the spot.

...

State GOP spokesman Brent Woodcox said officials still planned to air the ad Monday, beginning with the evening newscasts. He said the party had not completed the details on the size of the ad buy.

...

WRAL-TV in Raleigh and WSOC-TV in Charlotte have declined to run the spot, Woodcox and station officials said.

Jim Hefner, vice president and general manager at WRAL, said the station had determined the ad was "inflammatory" and decided not to run without knowing that McCain and national Republicans had objected to it.

Democratic party officials have criticized the ad. On Thursday, state Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek urged Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole to use her power to keep it off the air.

"As the highest-ranking Republican in the state, you have both the ability and responsibility to erase this stain on our state," Meek said in a letter to Dole. "Your silence tells North Carolinians that you will also sanction similar gutter tactics in your own campaign."

Dole said in an interview that she didn't want to get involved.

...

Obama's campaign questioned McCain's efforts to get the ad off the air.

"The fact that Senator McCain can't get his own party to take down this misleading, personal attack ad raises serious questions about his promise to the American people that he will run a civil, respectful campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan.

Just a drive-by, Phil.

Oregonians are a unique bunch.  There's everything from rednecks  to CA-style liberals, but they are both unique within their own categories, and sometimes I can't tell what a person is.   Clinton's going to get schamltzed here - I have no doubt - the liberals are to independent for the Clinton machine - and there there is a lot of anti-Clinton (starting with Bill) sentiment on both sides.

The rednecks here are more likely to vote for a black person if they like him, than they would in the northeast.  Hard to explain.  Just very independent minded culture.

Paul Bucha, a Vietnam War veteran, says he believes Barack Obama would make a good president because he is honest, responsible and a member of a young generation that is “not burned out.”

Medal of Honor recipient says Obama right candidate to lead young generation

April 24, 2008 - 7:53PMMatt TessnearSun Journal

A Vietnam veteran stopped in town Thursday

...

Paul Bucha served in the Vietnam War as captain of the 101st Airborne Division.

...

He pulled chairs around him at the Obama campaign office on Queen Street and asked people to join him for a "town-hall-like meeting."

Bucha said the United States is not producing anything meaningful, the country's dollar is not worth much and people are crawling over each other to try to get ahead. He said his generation had a chance to improve the country and did not get the job done.

"We started out a ‘he ain't heavy, he's my brother' generation," he said. "We didn't get it done. I want a new generation to take over, one that's not burned out. I think our generation, we lost it. That's why I'm supporting Barack Obama."

Bucha, who is 64, told about 30 people who gathered in the office to be the older generation that supports the younger generation.

"There's nothing wrong with that," he said. "The younger generation is idealistic and has a passion for people."

Good leaders have five qualities and Obama exhibits all of them, he said. The qualities are integrity, confidence, competence, compassion and humility.

...

Some of the people who listened to Bucha were veterans. Johnnie Thompkins Jr. is a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp.

"He (Bucha) understands what it's like to be a veteran," Thompkins said. "That's the main thing. Some people are saying we're going to be in Iraq for 100 years. That's my grandchildren's grandchildren. We've got to think about what that means for us."

New Bern was one of four stops Bucha made Thursday. He will make three more today.

BO/HC is the ticket that can beat McC IMO.

Did you hear the awful stuff that's already starting about BO?  The new repug ad?  It's horrible.  McC has severe anger problems, likely from childhood, and he's going to displace his rage against BO or HC. Count on it.  It's not even ugly yet...look at what they did to Max and Tammy (is that her name)?

I'd hazard a guess that every state in the union allows you to change your voter registration. . . .  Question is, how long before an election?   New Hampshire, I believe, you can change as you walk in the door.  In WV, it must be done 30 days before the primary. . . .

Letter From West Virginia: "My grandfather is still hopeful'

By Christopher Hass - Apr 24th, 2008 at 2:42 pm EDT

Today we received a letter from a supporter in West Virginia, sharing her grandfather's experience in Johnstown, Pennsylvania:

I am writing to tell you about my grandfather in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. I read this morning, the dawn of the Pennsylvania primary, an article about the so-called age divide that has pervaded this primary election, with the Clinton campaign cleaning the pre-Internet, pinochle playing, elderly citizens of Pennsylvania and the Obama campaign sweeping the younger voting populations. I do not believe we, the American people, can be so neatly divided.

My grandfather, Frederick, 91, recognized a profound truth in Senator Barack Obama’s message of hope and exercise of change, a truth that for him transcended age, race, and even party lines. My grandfather has been a registered Republican his entire life. Even during these times, when the heavy weight of serious issues is upon us and our President has disheartened even those within his own party, my grandfather has sworn to go to his grave a registered Republican. Today, Frederick, 91, registered Democrat, is voting for Barack Obama.

In a strange way, I kind of like this blog with it's bouncing.

It reminds me of my walk along the Charles River yesterday, whereby I saw a cormorant dive down in spot along the bank of the river nearest me.  I waited, waited, waited and finally the bird popped up hundreds of feet away on the other side of the river, downstream.

I thought of this blog.

Something about McCain having a African-American girlfriend or something?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Push polling, suggesting that he had fathered a black child. (He had adopted a baby girl from India. . . )
It's not necessary, however, for a smear to be true to be effective. The most effective smears are based on a kernel of truth and applied in a way that exploits a candidate's political weakness.
Having run Senator John McCain's campaign for president, I can recount a textbook example of a smear made against McCain in South Carolina during the 2000 presidential primary. We had just swept into the state from New Hampshire, where we had racked up a shocking, 19-point win over the heavily favored George W. Bush. What followed was a primary campaign that would make history for its negativity.
In South Carolina, Bush Republicans were facing an opponent who was popular for his straight talk and Vietnam war record. They knew that if McCain won in South Carolina, he would likely win the nomination. With few substantive differences between Bush and McCain, the campaign was bound to turn personal. The situation was ripe for a smear.
It didn't take much research to turn up a seemingly innocuous fact about the McCains: John and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter named Bridget. Cindy found Bridget at Mother Theresa's orphanage in Bangladesh, brought her to the United States for medical treatment, and the family ultimately adopted her. Bridget has dark skin.
Anonymous opponents used "push polling" to suggest that McCain's Bangladeshi born daughter was his own, illegitimate black child. In push polling, a voter gets a call, ostensibly from a polling company, asking which candidate the voter supports. In this case, if the "pollster" determined that the person was a McCain supporter, he made statements designed to create doubt about the senator.
Thus, the "pollsters" asked McCain supporters if they would be more or less likely to vote for McCain if they knew he had fathered an illegitimate child who was black. In the conservative, race-conscious South, that's not a minor charge. We had no idea who made the phone calls, who paid for them, or how many calls were made. Effective and anonymous: the perfect smear campaign.
Two thoughts on the events of the day:
1.) As most of you know, the North Carolina Republican party plans to run some pretty controversial ads against Senator Obama. Also, the person who put together the Willie Horton ad in 1988 is putting together an ad (probably a series of ads) going after Obama. These two developments seem to prove Michelle Obama's statement that the United States is a mean place for certain segments of society.
2.) Apparently the new "Willie Horton" ad against Obama slams him because of  all the gang violence in Chicago and the fact that Obama voted against the death penalty for gang members in 2001. Recently Obama was slammed because of his so called position on gun control. Seems like the gang violence in Chicago (31 deaths last weekend) proves the Obama position on guns. Let the hunters hunt; but let's keep the guns off the streets and out of the schools. It seems like whatever he does Obama is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
Reducing the Amount of Juice Electronic Gadgets Consume
By DAVID POGUE
"Vampire power" has been bugging me ever since I first heard of it.
It's the juice consumed by electronic gadgets even when they're turned off (also called phantom loads, standby power or leaking electricity). They just sit there, plugged in, sucking electricity, at a cost to you and to the environment. According to the Energy Department, vampire gadgets account for about 25 percent of total residential electricity consumption in the U.S.
thanks, s m, for the video  from the bobcescablog - the tide is turning.  how fitting he used a song w/Hillary's line from Tuesday - I wonder if they wrote it and recorded it in the 2 days since her comment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s9ubMQX7WE
heh heh - I can't believe I didn't know who Bob Cesca is (except from huffpo - never read his bio)!  I checked his yooutube page to check for other vids and this is what I learned:
Bob at the Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca
Bob Cesca is a writer, director and producer, and the founder of Camp Chaos, an animation studio based near Philadelphia. He's been a featured blogger for the Huffington Post since August, 2005.
Bob has written and produced hundreds of animated shorts as well as music videos for Iron Maiden, Meat Loaf, Everclear, Yes and Motley Crue. He's also the creator of the politically charged animated sketch show ILL-ustrated which aired for two seasons on VH1 and MTV2. His current animated project is Kung Fu Jimmy Chow.
Recreate 68 Denounces Plan to Hide the Homeless During the DNC     Tuesday, May 22 2007 @ 01:57 PM PDT
Contributed by: strongwindsahead
Views: 593
Anti-Capitalist MovementAS CITY ANNOUNCED PLANS TO INTERN HOMELESS DURING DNC, R68 ALLIANCE ASKS: WHO’S NEXT?
DENVER, May 22, 2007—Members of the organizing committee for the Recreate 68 Alliance, a group formed to coordinate protests and alternative activities around the Democratic National Convention in August 2008, are concerned by the city’s announced plans to “persuade the homeless to come inside” during the Democratic National Convention, to shelters kept open specifically to keep homeless people off the streets during the DNC. The city claims to be doing this for “security” reasons. It seems unlikely that Denver’s homeless could pose a “security” threat to convention delegates. As others have stated, it appears the city’s real motive is to sanitize Denver’s image for the delegates—and to remove from their view visual evidence of the very kinds of social issues that the Democratic Party should be considering. The city has requested $50 million for security, an extravagant amount.
Some of that money should be used to build more shelters that should be open every day, not just in extreme cold or when the elites in our society want to come to Denver for a party and not be distracted by that pesky poverty issue, and to provide other social services. R-68 recognizes the homeless as an integral part of their plans for 2008 and will utilize their resources to provide a voice and a platform for the homeless to express their views on the issues that cause this unnecessary problem in our overly sanitized communities. R-68 is of the opinion that we need to assist the most injured by capitalism in our community and not hide them from the elites who will be celebrating the system that caused the damage. Further more, during R-68’s four day “Festival of Democracy”, we will be providing basic care for the homeless such as, free meals and free basic medical assistance.
In addition to this treatment of homeless people as criminals and second-class citizens or worse, there is a larger issue. Prior to previous conventions and other national events, officials in host cities have raised inflammatory, false alarms about “security” issues to justify unnecessary and unconstitutional restrictions on First Amendment rights of demonstrators. The issue of “security” masks the real interests of officials in maintaining an atmosphere in which “official” visitors to these events will be encouraged to spend money and play without being “distracted” by political dissent.
But the quadrennial convention of one of our national political parties is an occasion that is central to the national discourse on important public issues, and should be regarded as the appropriate place for a great public conversation between the people and their elected officials, and the city should welcome demonstrators and treat them with the same respect and honor accorded to convention delegates. None of the fears raised about security threats and violence at previous conventions have materialized—not because of tight security, but because demonstrators have come to these events to engage in peaceful, non-violent exercise of their First Amendment rights.
There will be legitimate security concerns around the DNC. But they cannot and must not be used as an excuse either to round up homeless people or to prevent demonstrators from voicing their concerns in close proximity to those attending the convention.
The problem I have with McCain and the push-poll is that he didn't make a big thing about the attack on his daughter and went on to campaign for GWB.  Considering that interracial sexual relationships were/are common all over the country but are kept hidden as if there were something wrong with them, in my mind, at least, McCain's failure to challenge the smear was what was revealing--calling into question the sincerity of his "straight talk."  And the straight talk has since been revealed as just a gimmick.  Smears work when they're based on a core truth.  That was also the case with Kerry.  Kerry had changed his position on Vietnam but didn't want to admit it.
Obama refuses to be intimidated or embarrassed by what other people do.  In the process, he's challenging the very core of Republican belief--that everybody's directed by somebody.
Petraeus Promotion Ensures Future for Bush War Policy
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042408A.shtml
Julian E. Barnes, reporting for The Los Angeles Times, writes, "In promoting Army Gen. David H. Petraeus to commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, President Bush is doing more than rewarding a job well done in Iraq. The president also is taking a step toward perpetuating his policy of high troop levels in Iraq and is putting his most trusted general in charge of renewing the military's focus on Iran."
Photo_124_tinythumb
By Monica Smith on Apr 25, 2008 10:17 AM EDT
Petraeus' nomination to head up the Central Command is an opportunity to review the general's past performance, as well as the policy of carving up the globe into U.S. spheres of military supervision and influence.  Who exactly appointed the U.S. the world's police force?  Wasn't this a major Republican complaint during Clinton?
Perhaps the reason Republicans are flocking to Obama is because they've woken up to the fact that the Republican party has violated their commitment to limited government.
Why is it necessary to have strict limits on government, aside from the reason that the authority to use force needs to be carefully regulated?  Could it be to compensate for the fact that when individuals are relieved of self-control and self-restraint to promote obedience in the interest of group cohesion and morale, the potential for unrestrained or risky behavior increases automatically?
I'm not sure this was appreciated.  If it had been, then we would not have been presented with the argument that the Geneva conventions needed to be followed in order to prevent reprisals against our own troops.  Rather, we would have heard that good order needs to be maintained because an unrestrained military is self-destructive.  It's like a boiler that explodes if its fires aren't kept at the proper level.
The U.S. military is self-destructing.  Somebody needs to ask Petraeus how that's not the proper conclusion when one considers 500 veterans a month committing suicide, pensioners committing treason, injured troops being returned to combat duty, national guard units not ready for deployment, etc.
Annilow,
Does that mean the "Winner" should be willing and able to cheat and lie to win? If so, what does that make the loser who didn't do those things? And what does that say about the American people?
+++++++++++++++++++
Susan I guess I took it to mean that the loser (and even tho it's Rahm I believe he means Hillary - my bias I guess) should be a gracious loser and rally his/her troops behind the Dem cause. Just my take.
Here's the diary in case anyone wonders what we're talking about.
I would think finding the flawed code in the blog would be a great challenge for a high school IT class. I'd look for a "go sub" in the maintenance area. (but I haven't done code since the eighties.) I miss jc, she would be having so much fun with this.
Morning Folks,
Best wishes, Rae Hart, on your move.  Your posts have been interesting, delightful, and I especially enjoyed learning a little about Alaska.  Please stay connected.
Shirlee Murphy, a good morning to you.  Please say hello from time to time.
Keep the information coming about the campaigns and Barack Obama.  There will be many difficult, unfair, awful things ahead.  A measure of commitment, courage, and steadfastness is how we deal with them.
Question for Seashell.  If your didn't write the summary paragraph, who did?  Why would you post such a thing in the first place?  I don't care, Seashell, what your preferences are.  I do care about slurs against people.  There's no place, as I've repeated so many times, for that kind of prejudcie in the classroom, in personal relationships, or on a public forum.  If I think I see it, I'll call it.  And, if I engage in it, call me on it.
Windy here.  The prediction is for a hot and dry summer, fire danger already high.  Boulder's Settlers Park had a two acre wildfire this week, and the town of Ordwary had a fire that consumed 30 plus houses.  Not a good sign.
Have a good day, folks. The dialogue is important.  It's probably one of the few (so it seems) healthy signs of our society still extant.
I'm an older fuddy duddy (with greying sideburns, one year older than Barack) who's rooting for the young 'uns this prez election cycle:
Some young religious voters focus on social justice
By LILLIAN CUNNINGHAM, Medill News Service for The Associated Press
2 hours, 37 minutes ago
CHICAGO - Beau Underwood is putting his faith in politics. He's a 22-year-old at the University of Chicago Divinity School, an active member of the Disciples of Christ and — in his spare time — he's showing candidates that the path to political righteousness doesn't always veer right.
Underwood and a growing number of other young, left-leaning believers are entering the political arena as campaign aides, lobbyists, grass-root activists and engaged voters. They are trying to expand the focus of faith-based politics beyond the religious right's hot-button issues of abortion and gay marriage. And they are placing social justice issues, like poverty and war, at the intersection of their moral and political decision making.
...
"In three decades I've never seen this sort of student-youth involvement," said Jim Wallis, author of the best-seller "The Great Awakening." "I do think there's a major shift under way."
...
"The one thing that I do think that I'm called to do is to help bridge the gap between the moral voices coming from the church and the moral decisions being made by those running the government," Underwood said. "Faith can unite people across party lines."
That may help explain the strong following Sen. Barack Obama maintains with young faith-based voters of different denominations.
seems like the young 'uns of today are fed up with the jams in the older generation of a lack of civilized political discourse, in a lack of political action in Washington DC and across America --
The religion of global warming would say you are wrong, it can't be snowing on April 25 in Iowa. If the religion's climate models are the gospel then it should be 145 degrees on April 25. Maybe its time to question the divinity of the models. Amen.
Hello from Salt Lake.
Lol.  It  snowed here yesterday.  Was colder here when we arrived than when we left home.  Sunny out now, chilly though.
My husband is at his interview right now.  I'm feeling kind of antsy.
Thanks for the kind words Pat.  Looks as if we may be neighbors, CO is not that far away.
Clinton to Keep Defense Jobs Here
Keith_Indy on Apr 24 2008 at 1:16 pm
Here’s an ad some of you may not have seen. But now (wonder of wonders) since Indiana is a battleground state in the Democratic primary, it’s been getting plenty of air play during the local news programs.
...
Hillary Clinton:
Right here over 200 Hoosiers built parts that guided our military’s smart bombs to their targets.
They were good jobs, but now, they’re gone to China.
And now America’s defense relies on Chinese spare parts.
George Bush could have stopped it, but he didn’t.
As your president, I will fight to keep good jobs here, and to turn this economy around.
I’m Hillary Clinton and I approve this message because American workers should build America’s defense.
Seems like a simple enough case, doesn’t it. Bush and the Republicans failing to do what she would do.
But wait till you here the kicker about this.
The history of the particular plant she’s talking about.
Citing national-security concerns, two Democratic lawmakers are engaged in a last-ditch effort to halt plans for the transfer of an Indiana factory that produces critical technology used in the guidance systems of U.S. “smart bombs” to the People’s Republic of China.
The Department of Defense denies any impropriety, but some observers are asking: Is it a case of politics as usual, or a cover-up?
The Magnequench factory (originally known as UGIMAG) was sold in August 2000 to a consortium that included Chinese interests. In 2001, it was announced the plant would be shut down.
The factory is responsible for producing 80 percent of the rare-earth permanent magnets used in the guidance systems of U.S. “smart bombs,” according to lawmakers.
In 1995, Beijing San Huan New Material High-Tech Inc. and China National Non-Ferrous Metals Import & Export Corporation partnered with investment firm the Sextant Group Inc. to acquire Magnequench and established the new entity as Magnequench International Inc.
...
The 1995 sale required approval from the Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S., or CFIUS. The CFIUS is an inter-agency committee chaired by the secretary of treasury, tasked with conducting reviews of foreign acquisitions that might threaten national security.
Hmmm, the irony is just mahvelous… Now, who was in control of the Executive Branch way back in 1996.
On second thought, maybe her point is that she will do a better job than President Bush or her husband did!!!
Air Force says 2 killed in training jet crash in Miss.
1 day ago
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — An Air Force training jet crashed at Columbus Air Force Base on Wednesday, killing both pilots aboard, base officials said.
The base said in a news release that the T-38C Talon crashed about 12:30 p.m., and that the pilots' names were being withheld until relatives could be notified. A base official said no other information would be made available until another news release is issued Thursday afternoon.
WCBI-TV in Columbus reported that witnesses saw a large plume of smoke coming from the base. The runways were closed and some other Air Force planes were diverted to nearby Golden Triangle Regional Airport, which usually handles commercial flights.
Three other aircraft from the base have crashed since January 2007, but no one was killed in those crashes.
Two T-6 Texan II primary trainers, which are propeller driver aircraft, collided and crashed in November during training flights over rural east Mississippi, but all on board parachuted to safety.
In January 2007, two airmen aboard a T-38C ejected safely before their plane crashed in rural Panola County.
Hey all, power cord burned out on the computer last night, I'm at the library, won't be around for a few days.
It is occurring to me that the chorus of doubts about Obama losing by the margin of the racist vote, openly stated by McCain's staff and fanned by Hillary, are similar to what Rove pulled in 2004 when he openly said they were hoping to run against Howard, so the Dems would question Howard and eventually serve up a much weaker candidate.
The GOP has long been salivating to run against Hillary. And she's who they still want which is why they are casting doubts about Obama.
Think about it: McCain would have to rely on knee-jerk racism for the racist vote since he could never openly court it. Whereas the misogynist vote he could openly court ("Is a woman able to make the tough decisions about wars?) and the anti-Clinton vote he could most definitely openly court. Plus the added bonus that if Obama is race-assassinated, black voters will sit home. He actually gets a 20-point swing out of that vs. a 15-point swing at best from the racist vote.
Amazing the media is falling for this "please don't throw me in the briar patch" schtick yet again.
See y'all soon!
A baseball game is a great place to hang out and share stories between innings and batters and I'm a baseball fan that lives 150 miles from the nearest ballpark.
I might come in early just to catch a game. I do know I should have bought my plane ticket before now but at least now I'm flexible. I'll soon be able to make plans.
The continental ice pack that became the glaciers that flattened north central Iowa ten thousand years ago were caused when the open ocean in the artic had a epoch of lake effect snow in the mid-continent.
global warming models show Iowa losing a degree and a half
the earth has had wide fluctuations, this one happens to be man made, and could be slowed with concerted action
I don't own ocean front property so am not as concerned as if I lived in Florida, the global food supply is a bit precarious though and I would hate to be the party (Republican) that caused a hundred million deaths because they had their head in the sand.
