There's a reason why witnesses called to testify in a court of law are required to pledge to
Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.Things left out or embellishments stuck in pervert the truth and turn it into a lie. We recently saw that happen with Hillary Clinton's sniper fire in Tuzla and it's also been apparent in the stories told by the twenty-two dirty pensioners--perjurers in the court of public opinion--who spread half-truths and snippets of mis-information about the invasion/occupation of Iraq to deceive the American people and enrich themselves. And yesterday Secretary Robert Gates joined them. Or maybe he just decided to do his own dirty work. Because the dirty pensioners were a Department of Defense operation.
In the event, like Secretary Rice in the previous week, Secretary Gates showed up at the Air University in Alabama to give a speech. Presumably, (I haven't read a transcript) the operation in Iraq was a central topic, not just an afterthought as in Secretary Rice's. And he was critical.
Gates says Air Force not doing enough in Iraq war effort
Certainly, there's good reason to be critical of the Air Force. As the Associated Press report reminds us:
the Gates remarks come at a stressful time for Air Force leaders, including the service's top officer, Gen. Michael Moseley, and its civilian chief, Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne. They have come under fire on a number of fronts, including criticism from some quarters that the Air Force is too wedded to Cold War-era weaponry like the F-22 stealth fighter at the expense of less glamorous items that could be used in smaller-scale conflicts like the counterinsurgency fight in Iraq.
But, it wasn't the nuclear missiles that went on a joy ride from North Dakota to Louisiana or the nuclear detonators that got sent to Taiwan by mistake that had Gates in a tizzy. And he didn't mention that out in Utah, where they couldn't find the paper work, they lit a bonfire to dispose of uranium wastes.
Uranium bonfire: Air Force incinerated radioactive waste
Tribune Editorial
Article Last Updated: 04/21/2008 04:57:24 PM MDTOfficials at Hill Air Force Base inadvertently orchestrated a uranium bonfire in a waste incinerator at Layton.
Over the past eight months, Hill sent a nine-ton batch of obsolete military hardware to the burn plant, unaware that the items contained "trace" amounts of depleted uranium. And when you're burning nine tons of waste, "trace" amounts add up. All told, five pounds of uranium went up in smoke.
The Weapons System Program Office at Hill is at fault. The documents spelling out the contents of the materials to be burned, according to a Hill press release, "were not readily accessible." So, instead of taking the time to track down the paperwork, officials callously threw it on the fire, and Utahns be damned.
Nor did Gates mention the on-going mess in the Air Force procurement process where not only the awarding of the contract for mega flying gas tankers is being challenged, but a possible criminal conspiracy is involved in the awarding of a contract (since rescinded) to promote the Thunderbirds on the ground.
Small company regrets bidding on Air Force contract
April 21, 2008 - 6:51amHe turned to the Internet to look up SMS, and quickly found that the company was incorporated in Pennsylvania about two weeks after the Air Force released its RFP.
He also found that all of SMS' examples of past performance submitted as part of its proposal involved either volunteer work, work other companies had done as part of the volunteer effort, or work that fell outside the time frame for which performance references were to be offered.
And he found that Hornburg was listed as a principal in SMS on a patent application the company filed June 1, 2005, for its "Thundervision" broadcast system, combining Jumbotron screens, video and sound.
[...]
Waitkus and his staff wrote the protest themselves and sent it to the GAO. They were assigned an attorney at the watchdog agency, who took over and shepherded the protest through the system."As I recall, he was pretty amazed and he agreed with our protest. And of course our protest was correct, because they took the contract away" from SMS, he says.
But then SMS sued Video West and the government in federal district court over the termination of the contract. SMS accused Waitkus' company of conspiring with some Air Force personnel to steal its Thundervision concept.
[...]
Adding insult to injury, when the Air Force terminated SMS' contract, the company had already received a $1.99 million payment "for work done to date" - though the contract was awarded Dec. 14, 2005 and ended Feb. 16, 2006 - and received an additional $592,000 for "termination costs."
Now, that may look like a lot of money, but the contract was for 50 million dollars to promote an air show--a sweet deal that the retired General Hal M. Hornburg was apparently keen to participate in. Though the investigation by the Defense Criminal Investigation Service found, among other things:
The investigation indicates that preferential treatment may have been given to SMS in the award of the TAPS contract and that senior USAF officials may have influenced the award to SMS. In addition, during the course of this investigation, several other USAF contracts awarded by the 99th CONS were reviewed and irregularities were found in the award of those contracts. Because of that, the investigation also focused on those related procurements; and also found was an apparent patter of USAF military and Government Civilian personnel not following applicable rules and/or regulations; and possible violations of criminal statutes, which may have led to unfair procurement practices and wasteful and/or unnecessary expenditures.
the United States Attorney in Nevada declined to prosecute. So, very likely, it didn't make much impression on the Secretary. And it was before his time.
Too bad. He might have got a clue.
According to the IR/R, the following allegations were reported:
a. The principals of SMS were/are either former USAF personnel or had privileged relationships with the Thunderbirds, and thus, had been given an unfair and unethical advantage in the bidding and award process. One of the principals of SMS was/is General (retired)Hal M. Hornburg, USAF. General Hornburg's role in SMS may have represented a violation of post-employment restrictions.
b. SMS was created by its principals for the sole purpose of fulfilling the terms of solicitation FA4861-05-R-C008.
c. SMS appeared to exist on paper only; it did/does not appear to have physical facilities from which to fulfill the contract needs, nor did/does it appear to have a sound financial history from which to guarantee fulfillment of said contract.
f. SMS submitted a proposal and was awarded a contract for a cost/price amount that far exceeds what is reasonable and prudent for the requirements of the solicitation; almost double the cost of the equipment, services and personnel submitted by competitors SRO Media (SRO) and Video West, Inc., thus egregiously overcharging the U.S. Government for their services. SRO's bid submission for this contract was $24,925,965, while SMS' bid proposal was $49,925,795. moreover, the U.S. Government rated SRO equal to or higher than SMS in each of the five major categories relevant to the award of this contract.
But then, the Air Force has just undertaken an 81 million dollar advertising campaign to promote its new Cyber Command, a program that doesn't yet have "physical facilities from which to fulfill" their mission either and summarized the SMS kerfuffle thusly:
the Pentagon said its investigators had found that a $50 million contract to promote the Air Force's Thunderbirds aerial stunt team was tainted by improper influence and preferential treatment. The Defense Department's Inspector General found no criminal conduct, but laid out a trail of communications from Air Force leaders — including from Moseley — that eventually influenced the 2005 contract award.
Half truths. Sad to say that can be said about what the Secretary actually addressed--the Air Force failure to do enough in Iraq. And it's not just about the drones that the Secretary in calling for--more unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft--where the fact that these machines kill people on the spot is conveniently left out. When he observes,
"All this may require rethinking long-standing service assumptions and priorities about which missions require certified pilots and which do not," Gates said, referring to so-called unmanned aerial vehicles that are controlled by service members at ground stations.
he's ignoring that there's already serious concern about having people sitting in air-conditioned comfort at a console pushing a button to drop a five hundred pound bomb or dispatch a hellfire missile into somebody's house.
But, even more important, that the Air Force has been flying close to a hundred sorties each and every day and subjecting Iraq to what the Helsinki Agreement referred to as "continuous bombardment" (which they want to stop) hasn't even registered. Perhaps that's because Robert Gates is, like the Bushes and John McCain, an old flyboy who doesn't pay much attention to what happens on the ground when you "bomb, bomb, bomb Iraq."
If he did, perhaps he'd recognize that when bombs and missiles are raining down from the air night and day, year after year, smashing everything up, there's really no response to expect from the people down below but that they'd plant their bombs in the ground and carry missile launchers on their backs. And, if he could think that far, perhaps he'd consider that the reason six thousand vets a year are committing suicide is because they can't get the sight and smell of those body parts that the aerial bombardment leaves behind out of their minds--those bodies that the Secretary of Defense now wants to see dispatched by console--and by people who have no idea about the difference between what the eye of a camera and the eye of a pilot sees.
But, never mind the moral implication of letting drones decide whom to kill on a battlefield that's a city, not a battlefield. As a practical matter, there's no way that the Air Force is going to be able to secure the perimeter of its bases by remote control. 24/7 surveillance is great. But, the tape has to be checked and by the time it's checked, whatever raised suspicion is long gone. And then, there's the sandstorms............
I wasn't aware that Gates was in the Air Force before he went to the CIA to start gathering intelligence and I don't know if he was a flyboy like John McCain, but this quote
He said the Air Force and the other branches of the military need to protect those in their ranks who are maverick thinkers, who defy convention and push for creative solutions to hard problems.
suggests he's got a similar problem with being out of touch. I mean, he's looking for mavericks among people who burn up uranium, lose track of nuclear missiles, and worry a lot about whether or not their uniform tops and bottoms match.
Oh yes, and an Air Force that's going all stealth with its fighters so the enemy won't see them at the same time they're doing "shows of force" on a daily basis to "deter enemy activities."

The United States of Stupidity
We, the people, didn't used to be this dumb

And my flag lapel pin ... honey, have you seen my flag lapel pin?! I can't go out in public without the flag lapel pin! That's like streaking!
...
ABC News hosted the final debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last Wednesday night. And so, with trepidation, I switched it on. Unlike sports events, one can't mute the volume for a debate. You actually have to listen. And what a mighty crock of stupid it was, forever curing me of watching anything produced by a network news organization.
Two things occurred to me while I watched Gibson and Stephanopoulos assault and batter Obama. 1) Why don't the networks just come out and say it straight up: They don't want a black man in the White House. 2). Obama needs to be better prepared to deflect the stupidity in future debates with McCain. If anything, Obama has erred on the side of hope. He actually thinks he will be asked intelligent questions.
Hope is nice, of course, but a good left jab and a couple of well-aimed rights into the soft white underbelly would work wonders. When Obama stands up and says, "I will not play dumb any longer," he may just prove to be an agent of change. For all of us. ¦

Going green is not a political issue; it’s a moral issue. The environmental challenges we face — and how we choose to address them — is arguably one of the greatest moral tests of our time. Whether we pass or fail will impact the lives and quality of life for generations to come.
I and most members of my party side with the vast majority of scientists who link climate change and the actions of humans. But I’m no scientist. I’m a pastor who works in politics, and the scientific argument is not one for me to make.
For me, greening is about stewardship. Regardless of whether you believe in climate change, don’t believe or aren’t sure, we all must recognize the beauty and sanctity of the world God created for us.
Such a precious gift is reason enough to make every effort to preserve it. ...full article: http://thehill.com/op-eds/earths-steward...

None of which are a "quirk of nature." But perhaps you don't know much about Mother Nature, that would not surprise me. Many non-Democrats do.
Should HC, by any means, get the nomination, I'm sure Howard and Barack and Edwards will tell all BO supporters to vote for her.
I'll say this again. I've heard BO say recently that he or HC would be world's better than McC.
Hatred is not going to bring us together to beat McC, but we can all vote as we please.
Unfortunately, there is some displaced anger towards HC and that's a shame. Both she and Barack have good qualities and have voted much the same. They also have flaws. Of course, he's the best speaker and draws huge crowds but that does not mean he'll serve us well. Same for her.
Here's my question. If BO gets the nomination but loses the election, can a few of us come back here and say "I told you so?" :-)
Phil, thanks for clarifying.
Hope is nice, of course, but a good left jab and a couple of well-aimed rights into the soft white underbelly would work wonders. When Obama stands up and says, "I will not play dumb any longer," he may just prove to be an agent of change. For all of us. ¦
Maybe, except that's a tricky thing to do when you are running on a different level. A well-positioned attack now and then the right time is OK, but that is what he has been doing.
I would never try to second guess him and his amazing campaign with all its volunteers and paid workers. It has been like none other before. And look where he is positioned now -- in front with an insurmountable lead!
There will be plenty of time after the convention. McCain is so weighted down with baggage, BO will be able just take his choice on any given day and snap away.
sea,
Seems to me it is YOU who has been spreading hate here for some time now. I'm glad I didn't scroll your comment today because I think I detect that perhaps you are coming around to accept the inevitable conclusion.
We will hopefully all be rallying around Obama and everything good about him and his candidacy after the convention, if not before. I suggest anyone who doesn't understand where he has been and what he has done in the past, can read his book (sort of an autobiography), "Memories From My Father," particularly the chapter on "Chicago," which zeroes in on his community organizing, legal work for that, and teaching the Constitution.
PS..rdorgan
BO is walking a fine line. I too would like to see him fight back more, by saying the questions were stupid, but if he does, and if he's than perceived to be a black angry haughty man running against a white woman...well...that would be a problem for him.
I think he should take the risk and show a bit more spine. He disappointed greatly in the debate.
If he's the nominee, he'll be goaded unmercifully. If he gets angry, he'll be labeled - if if doesn't fight back hard, he'll be labeled like Kerry.
I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. nopey nope, and I wish him the best cuz he's a nice guy.
Good luck to BO and HC today.
Joan:
I won't let this go unchallenged.
Seems to me it is YOU who has been spreading hate here for some time now.
Just who is it I've said I hate? If you hadn't scolled me so much, you would have known all along that I intended to vote for BO if he's the nominee. Same for HC. Do you really think that people who haven't jumped on the BO wagon hate him? I don't use the word hate and I dare you to find a post of mine that says I hate HC or BO or any blogger. I consider this slander, Joan, and want an apology.
Joan, the hate you're projecting onto me is within yourself. Think about it.
Chris in NYC...sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom.
Rich...Congratulations on the exams...buying you a virtual beer.
Phil...walleyes are hitting, wish I could share ; )
I do have a delema at me fishing spot though.
There's an 11 year old that's been hanging out there the past few days.
Found out they just moved to town but this kid stays past dark and this is
no place for an unwatched kid. The river is raging, this kid
approaches everyone and trusts them (I heard he talked some guy on a boat
to take him out on the river) and then rides his bike home in the dark with
no lights. I'm tempted to call child protection services.
Wife just came over and Shuster on MSNBC
said all the superdelegates might break for
Obama together... politics/walleyes...bbl, I'll wait for th surprise...I'm going fishing.
hi all! just want to follow up on the comment about voting problems I left on a previous thread. they confirmed that there were problems early on which had been corrected and I recently heard a report that things seem to be going well everywhere, as far as they can tell.
and yes, seashell, I would have commented on a report of voting problems no matter what type of district it was in - AA or rich white! voting problems anywhere are a concern to me. I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of me,sea, but that's your problem not mine. sling away if it makes you feel better.
The problem I have with this global warming thing is why do we have to change behavior in response to a threat? Is global warming a better threat than terror or drugs or pinkos or savages or illegals?
Do you see where I'm getting at? Why would we despoil the earth, regardless of the ultimate consequences? Do you think maybe conservatives scoff because they recognize the strategy and consider the weapon tawdry? I mean, "global warming" is supposed to change life styles for people who head south because it's too cold in the north?
You see, global warming is a neo-euphemism that doesn't describe what it purports to be about.
The globe is not getting warmer. The interior of the earth is a hot molten roiling mess as it ever was. The crust is variable, as it ever was. The atmospheric gasses contain more carbon which captures the heat from the sun presumably before it reaches the crust. Outside the atmosphere is as cold as ever. Will the warming atmosphere expand? What about the ozone hole? Does it let heat escape?
I'm not keen about monopolists, even when all they want to monopolize is the conversation.
I just got back from Costco and was listening to Big Ed (Ed Schultz)in the car. He predicts Obama will win PA. I sure hope so or at least keep it close. Any reports out there??
sea if you blieve that hatred won't help then you should stop trying to stir this pot so much. no, I haven't heard you say you hate anyone here but you haven't held back from implying some pretty low things about anyone who 'supports Obama'. you seem to demand respect while showing very little for many of us here.
yes the rumors abound today that there's a large group of SDs ready to break for Obama. we shall see!
Blitzer reporting that Obama is already in Indiana, Hill still in PA -- imo that is not good news. What time do the polls close?
Sources of mine on the ground as we speak in PA are predicting BO takes the urban areas of PA.....................BUT Hillary comes thru the Scranton, Wilkes barre, Allentown, Willamsport, Intercourse, Beaver Falls, Ravine,Erie and Punxsatawney dont buy the message of hope, a wife with questionable patritiotism, an anti American preacher and being lectured on racism.....................thts what Im hearing anyways............if it changes Ill post it.......................
Anni the polls close at 8 pm. I have no idea what to expect from the voters of PA but I sure am happy they're finally voting!
delema s/b dilemma...sheesh, where did that come from?
and thanks Jo...just a rumor yes and not all...shouldn't be posting in a hurry.

Agreed sea..if Joan and Tom for that matter, represent some kind of democratic political types, they are pretty poor examples IMO...............they dnt seem to comprehend that Independents will make or break this election.............theyve done a lousy job recruiting here too.................
Thas OK.......... my sources are saying 6 hours from now theyll be maing excuses up and demeaning pennsylvanians........we shall see.................I think the country will go PA does in a general election.....................
I read a quote from Obama that if Clinton wins with over 50% of the vote - that is a win. So, methinks his internals must show a much closer race. I sure hope he has a good pollster.
Pins and needles.
Reed, if the kid is riding a bike after dark without a light, that's probably a traffic violation and it might be better to just alert a cop. They're pretty good at scoping out the scene.
Annilow - When Obama won Virginia and Maryland he was in Wisconsin. He's with John Mellencamp tonight and that's a good thing!
Also, when he won Wisconsin - he had already moved on to the next state - but heck, I don't remember where - it seems like so long ago.
Mike wrote "they dnt seem to comprehend that Independents will make or break this election.............theyve done a lousy job recruiting here too................."

Im only reporting back what I hear from people on the ground..................
it seems it will be a long night! they're just not sure how the district's tallies will trickle in so are warning that the balance may flip back and forth for quite a while or one may be way on top early on only to se their lead erode as the results come in. what I'm wondering is if those republican-leaning undecideds they keep talking about will come out to vote!
thank you PA democrats for registering and coming out in record numbers - whatever the outcome tonight, the democratic party wins - WE win!
if you get the chance, watch the Stewart and Colbert reruns tonight at 8 pm - Obama was great on Stewart and Bernie Sanders had a fun talk with Stephen!
Breaking: 29 NC legislators are endorsing Barack.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/4...
Reed - sad to hear about the 11 yr old. I hope he stays safe. we used to run around like that as kids and looking back I am amazed at how little our parents supervised our activities! between being told to 'go out and play' with no boundaries to being loaded up with highly toxic misquito spray each night, I'm amazed so many of us survived our childhood!
The globe is not getting warmer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~most of the "globe" is the Pacific Ocean so warming there will be captured in the fresh water depths for awhile, and then it will rise up and smite us just like a scene out of the Ten Commandments
weather for the nation's corn crop depends on surface temperature regimes in the Pacific Ocean for the most part, if from the Atlantic there is big trouble. Every few decades the Bermuda high backs up from the east and pushes a drought across most of the country, last one was 1988, the Omega Rocky Mtn. high is a more common problem
corn can't have sex when it passes 95 degrees the pollen dies, so best hope this isn't this summer global warming does the smite, because reserves of grain are so low
I'm curious why that low pressure just sat there and spun off the east coast the last few days, because lows can't move highs, but after this extended winter bring on the warming the calendar says plant corn
Mike wrote "Im only reporting back what I hear from people on the ground.................."
Thanks for your help.
(I meant mosquito!! wth is a mis-quito?!)
mary that is great about NC endorsements! this was a good time to come out - after most of PA has voted but before the results are in. I think poor PA will feel somewhat 'lonely' tonight when the press' six week stay comes to an end, but at least the campaigns dropped millions in the state. heh, heh - aren't FL and MI looking like the fools they are right about now?!
Jo wrote "I'm amazed so many of us survived our childhood!"
And you could crack your head open on those crazy jungle gyms. Speaking as a parent, the problem today is that almost all unsupervised or remotely dangerous recreation for offspring is strictly prohibited, which helps explain why kids are unimaginative, uncreative, physically unfit, and even worse, uninteresting. They lead dreary lives.
We at least got to experience something of the heady adventure of life. Imagine some kids trying to self-organize a pickup baseball game in this day and age. It would be heretical.
Howard Fineman just said Pittsburgh and surrounds are turning out for Hillary. For some reason - I thought Barack was supposed to take Pittsburgh - perhaps the urban areas anyway. I'm trying to read too much between the lines. He also said Hillary has the over 45-50 voters - with Tweety chiming in.
Seashell wrote on the last thread
If the machines were breaking down in HC country, would you all be blaming HC? I don't hear a peep about this since it's BO *territory.*
What on earth does this mean seashell? Who is blaming HC?
And just what is BO "territory", and why is it in quotes?
You run when you perceive that you are being attacked. Why?
You and everyone else here is fair game with their posts. I get grief, others do as well. Why should you be exempt?
You set yourself up and you may not see it. Then again, when you say "don't attack the messenger", or things of that nature, it's very clearly a defense mechanism that you emit.
Has it yet occurred to you that people comment on your posts for a reason and it's not personal?
Hi again,
Like rae, I'm so anxious. Please, please, please let this not be another letdown like the one that decimated me and others when Howard didn't win Iowa. Please. I don't think I have the strength to stand that.
And, I just heard on NPR that Hillary territory is Pittsburgh, middle class, working, 50s.
corn can't have sex when it passes 95 degrees
Me either! ;)
Jo, I was responding to Joan. If this blog were a bit less messed up, we could dialog better.
Of course I respect you. I respect all of you; I just disagree about some things . We have to be able to allow people who don't agree with Obamania to post w/o being accused of something or other. Not supporting Obama does not mean we're racist or hate him. I don't support HC either. Does that mean I'm sexist and hate women? Hardly.
Denise, I'm so used to a few people here expressing *hatred* for Hillary and maligning those who support her, and then posting about it, I made the mistake of assuming something. My bad.
Jo, thanks for the posts. I appreciate your even-handedness.
Sunday night OR has a debate for the Senate seat.
Thanks Sea for realizing your mistake.
Fox News exit poll data: per daily kos
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/22/...
BO 92% African American vote. click for rest.
Thus far exit polls are showing 52% C 48% O
That's a win in my book but this could change.
Altho I sympathize with BO supporters who don't want to be disappointed like we all were with Dean, some of us are suffering the let-down of Dean, Gore, Dodd and Edwards.
Maybe that's why some of us are no longer taking sides.
Let the good times roll. For people who believe in fate, all the teeth-knashing won't help. For people who believe they're in control, time will tell. For people who think that the people have the power, we shall see.
**************************
Women
Clinton 55%
Obama 44
Men
Clinton 47%
Obama 53
If you look at these numbers and assume 60% women then it looks like a Clinton 4% win. Interestin to note that accross the board (if you believe the numbers) they look far better for Obama than the Ohio exit numbers.....2004 exit polls also show more African American Voters in PA than Ohio. Go Philly!!!!
hi sea! re: Altho I sympathize with BO supporters who don't want to be disappointed like we all were with Dean, some of us are suffering the let-down of Dean, Gore, Dodd and Edwards.
and then some of us such as myself are suffering the letdown of Dean, Gore, Dodd and some of my blog friends who now diss me because I have lost all respect for Hillary Clinton and choose to support Barack Obama.
A contact of mine in Bird of Paradise says exit polss are in favour of Hillary by alot so far.............thats not too far for Lancaster and in Amish country................maybe the Amish have had it right all along, basically saying to hell with it all.............leave us alone.
Whatever the narrow outcome, the smearfest by HC continues. If BO gets the nomination, the right winguts have a problem. The only avenues left to attack Obama are so absurd, even cavemen can see thru them.
Bubba woke up again and said it was BO who did the racist think.
HC will have to shush him again; which would be a constant refrain for four years if she is elected.
Like Hillary, I'm going to use the F-word but I don't exactly think this is the F-word she had in mind -- First --
yes, Howard is First !
