No Basic Services, No Peace
After all these years and all this money, you would think the Bush administration would put some sort of priority on bringing regular water and power to Baghdad. If you thought that, you'd be wrong. The New York Times reports:
Even as American and Iraqi troops are fighting to establish control of the Sadr City section of this capital, the Iraqi government’s program to restore basic services like electricity, sewage and trash collection is lagging, jeopardizing the effort to win over the area’s wary residents.

another example of mccain's 'volcanic temper'...........he said that his wife, cindy, pasted on her make-up like a trollop and referred to her as 'you c***!'--in public before a group of reporters. wapo ran a front pager about the two-faced maverick's phenomenal temper.
Yep, guess it was during his '92 Senate race that he lashed out at her. Wondering if FauxGnus will run it several hundred times?
Looks like the gap is narrowing for HC in PA ~
GO Obama!
good thing is that both Dems lead against McCain in PA.

Several interesting statements...but Harold Ford's takes the cake.
"Answer: I wouldn't call it pro-war.
Question: It was in 2003.
Answer from Ford: Well, pro-war doesn't mean that we support the way this president has gone about fighting. We were supportive of removing Saddam Hussein, instilling stability in the country, reducing the threat that America faced from Al Qaeda and, equally important, the threat we thought was posed by Saddam Hussein. If we knew then what we know now … I was in the Congress; I would not have voted for the resolution. But at the same time, we're in a different place now. I caution anybody who continues to talk about the past on this issue."

My endorsement is more for Obama The Movement than it is for Obama the candidate. -Michael Moore
Good morning, everybody
Learned something new last night. Gates was a flyboy. He gave an incredible speech to some "warfighters" yesterday, castigating the Air Force for not doing enough in Iraq! Of course, he left out some of the stuff they are doing--i.e. didn't tell the whole truth. So, shall we add him to the 22 perjured pensioners?
What I want to know is who in his right mind would expect the Iraqis to rebuild water and sewer lines and the electric grid when the place is being bombed on a daily basis. Does anyone think that a sewer line will stay in tact when there's armoured vehicles rolling down the street? While it's true that in New York the utilities are buried in tunnels that run twenty or thirty feet through bedrock under the street, that wouldn't protect the facilities in the houses when they are concussed. And then, of course, there's the car bomb. The car bomb, introduced into iraq by the U.S. is a major concern. It's one of those "unintended consequences" things. Because, it turns out, things detonnating while they are sitting on the ground send shock waves in all directions--shock waves that have been adjudged strong enough to cause cracks in a nuclear power plant from several hundred feet away. So, what do we imagine the car bombs accomplish in Baghdad?
Right Michael, elections are about the electorate. Of course, that's something that people who are into leaders can't really comprehend. They don't understand that symbols are a figment of the popular imagination, not self-created. Obama had no reason to know he would 'take off' in the popular psyche--that the skinny guy with the big ears and the big smile would present an attractive persona to a lot of people who grew up liking Mickey Mouse and Big Bird.

I like him because of his Mr.Rogers disposition. but you are right, "national leaders" are figments of the imagination.
Candidates, even Barack, are as human as anyone else.
This is from my email. Must confess I'm not sure who democrats.com are. But this is what it is as they say. I for one think Hoyer is a Dino and Pelosi quite frankly either 1. has no b*lls or 2. is so entrenched in the machine she is clueless to what Americans really care about. Here's the email:
Pelosi Plans $178 Billion Blank Check for Iraq
"Measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle."
That's not from the peace movement - it's from the National Defense University, written by a senior Pentagon official who served under Donald Rumsfeld.
Yet despite the overwhelming opposition of the American people, Speaker Pelosi plans to rush a vote through Congress for another $178 billion blank check.
We must stop this madness. Tell Congress: No More Funds for Iraq

Activists around the country are organizing Iraq Town Halls so we can speak directly to our Representatives:
http://www.democrats.com/iraq-town-halls...
Unfortunately most Representatives are afraid to face us at our Town Halls, so we're organizing May Day Protests outside their District Offices on Thursday, May 1 at noon.
May 1 is the original Labor Day, and several unions are going on strike to protest the Iraq War. It's also "Mission Accomplished Day" (2003) and "Downing Street Minutes Day" (2005). Can you join us?

Writers push for laws to maintain Internet freedom
By JOHN DUNBAR, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 58 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - During the recent writers strike that virtually paralyzed television production for three months, Patric Verrone learned the value of the Internet.
It was his job as president of the Writers Guild of America, West, to keep his members unified during the highly public, 100-day strike, and the Internet proved invaluable.
"When your employers are the same companies that control the media, it's hard to get your message out," he told The Associated Press Monday.
To maintain contact with one another, guild members used blog postings, e-mail and videos. It was the success of that campaign that prompted Verrone to come to Washington and push for legislation that he hopes will guarantee the Internet's status as an open forum for communication.

I know this isn't 'breaking' but I didn't know the reason it was cancelled. After Stephanpoulous, can you really blame Barack:
Breaking: CBS' hopes for a primary debate, have been officially dashed. The North Carolina Democratic party announced they are canceling plans for Sunday's debate because they could not get a commitment from Sen. Barack Obama. The face-off was to be moderated by Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer with a plum spot after 60 Minutes.

seashell (and you too, Denise) -
Now you've done it ! You've invoked a discussion about juice.
Let me tell ya what I know about "juice" --
here's some targeted "got juice ?" ads that I thought up:to a mafia hit-man: "want to break out from being a goon ? drink prune"
to a vegetarian: "you like falafel ? wash it down with apple"
to a volcano watcher: "stay ahead of the lava, with guava"
to a Latin lover: "you can't really tango without the mango"
to a Frenchman: "your head is the best place for your beret, unless you want to carrot"
to a vampire: "don't be a leech, drink peach"
to Dick Cheney: "you realize you look really mean ? solve it, lessen those facial scowls with tangerine"
to a short NZealander: "tired of being called a peewee ? drink kiwi"
to a long-winded campaigner: "tired of being told you're a yadiyada ? drink papaya"
to a first time Mt Washington climber: "you look like you can't make the grade ? well here's some lemonade"

I have heard about a bridge that goes over a river near a slum in Manila where *folks* toss quarters or whatnot into "Shit River" and watch the little slum kids dive-in and actually find the precious metal coins!

According to Tommy James himself, "when I wrote Crystal Blue, it was taken from the book of Revelation: the imagery of the new Jerusalem." But I prefer to think that the "blue crystal" is really the planet Earth. This song was a big hit in 1969, the year man landed on the moon, and television viewers saw a beautiful blue round crystal sphere photographed from space.
...
CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION
Look over yonder what do you see
The sun is a-risin' most definitely
A new day is comin' people are changin'
Ain't it beautiful crystal blue persuasion
Better get ready gonna see the light
Love, love is the answer and that's all right
So don't you give up now so easy to find
Just look to your soul and open your mind
Crystal blue persuasion, mm-hmm
It's a new vibration
Crystal blue persuasion, crystal
Blue persuasion
Maybe tomorrow when He looks down
Every green field and every town
All of his children every nation
There'll be peace and good brotherhood
Crystal blue persuasion

This from the LA Times:
"The Clinton campaign signaled Monday that it would not be shy in arguing that nominating Obama would risk alienating certain white voters. In a conference call with reporters, campaign pollster Geoff Garin spoke in blunt terms about how the racial divide in Democratic contests -- with working-class whites clearly preferring Clinton over Obama -- makes her a stronger general election candidate.
"'The Obama campaign has simply not done a very effective job connecting with blue-collar and middle-income voters, and they are the heart and soul of the Democratic Party,' Garin said. He added later that Obama's 'appeal among white voters typically has been among the people who are the most affluent' and best educated. It is unusual for the campaign to talk so directly about racial divisions among Democratic voters."
I hate to think that any national campaign not run by Kluxers would articulate and stoop to hoping and encouraging Americans to behave at their very worst.
Shame on you, Clinton campaign!

It's one mixed up, convulted, dichtomy of a world. Worse are the countries like Bangladesh, etc. that workers slavage (aka recycle) aging supertankers by dismantling them for metal parts, or African countries that recycle computer monitors, etc for parts.
For me to recycle, it's a simple matter that doesn't jeopardize my health and my financial livelihood doesn't depend on that recycling. Less fortunate people than me are not so lucky and if those people didn't do recycling, the world would be in an even more of a mess in terms of more landfills, etc.
I recall the first EARTHDAY. My fourth grade class planted a tree on the school grounds in Carmichael California.
Man California was a happening place!
TTfn folks, I'm off to work.
Go Barack!

I heard Tommy James and the Shondells do that song live, but I believe it was before man landed on the moon. But it fits for earthday with your interpretation.

Today is Crystal Blue Persuasion for me, in terms of it being Earth Day and it being another dem primary election where voters get to exercise their intelligence (if they so choose to do so).

That's one reason I wish I was older, so I could have been old enough to go to concerts in the '60s (my musical awakening came when I was 12 in 1972 with American Pie by Don McClean and School's Out by Alice Cooper).
Well, I'm going to try and keep a positive attitude not matter what happens today in PA (hey, I still can't even figure myself out at times [smile], so trying to figure out other people and the reasons why they vote the way they do, can give me a headache at times).
8:16 AM EDT

Have a great day.
Indeed, Go Barack ! (if all goes well, he'd be the first president who is younger than me).
rdorgan
my super delegate hat leads me to see Barack Obama as that generational divide that makes it impossible for Republicans to re-fight the cultural battles of the sixties that will rally the Republican base, and they will want to bring it up with that old relic they have as a candidate.
(I say super delegate hat, because if I don't win a slot to Denver this Sat., I am going to contend for that one elected unpledged spot we fill at our state convention)
a super delegate hat also looks at the FEC reports and if Hillary can't pull off a double digit win today the race is effectively over even if for "legal" reasons (fundraising) she will surely continue
she will stay in through Indiana no matter what, but tearing down the likely nominee can't be sitting well with neutral party leaders who vote in Denver
the Osama ad clearly steps over the line

Good comment about superdelegates (those still fence-sitting) and good luck this Sat.
Clinton is burning bridges as she retreats, and so far Obama has not done any of that, it will be easier for him to unite the party after this ends than her, and that is also important to super-delegates.
the turnout for the young mother vote is always determinatitive in the GE and it is still to be decided if the "young" or the "mother" part of that equation prevails
I would look at that breakout group from the exit polls today.
Ann Curry did a good job with her interviews this morning, not every journalist at ABC is a dog.
bbl
No time to link, have to go to work, but do some research on Public Policy Polling.
They've had a good track record (didn't poll in NH) and did a huge sampling in PA over the weekend of over 2,000 likely voters.
They have Obama up by 3%. They are the pollsters who had Clinton up by 26% a few weeks ago.
See y'all tonight!
