My speech (representing Roy Carter) to the WIlkes Democratic Party Convention

Written by: Mike Cooper on Apr 19, 2008 12:54 PM EDT

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have the DEVIL as our representative, than Virginia Foxx, because at least the DEVIL is willing to admit that he is an AGENT OF EVIL, and last time I checked, he’s the one in possession of Foxx’s soul, not her.

But I’m thrilled to be here this morning.

Throughout North Carolina, dedicated Democrats like you are coming together on this County Convention day to celebrate the proud heritage of our Party and prepare for the Democratic victory on May 6th and in the future. Thank you for attending your County Convention and for all the work that you are doing on behalf of our wonderful slate of candidates.

Roy can’t wait to see you again on the campaign trail when he visits Wilkes County again within the next two weeks.

Roy began this campaign on Labor Day of last year because he has a passion to serve the working families of our district who have been betrayed by Virginia Foxx.

Roy is proud to have been a public school educator for the last 40 years.

(Click Read More for the rest of this post)

And a remarkable one at that.

I know him as such because I was there, in his classroom.

But Mr. Carter, realized that things weren’t changing.

Certainly not for the better.

Every semester his students would come in with tattered clothes and shoes.

They would have to tend to all the household chores, or even cook dinner, because their parents were working two jobs.

They weren’t able to study for tests or properly prepare for class because they couldn’t AFFORD to.

Roy made a choice, to run for Congress. Not, for himself, but for those students, his students.

Roy looked in the eyes of our young people, my friends, your children, and asked himself, will they be able to afford a college education, can they afford healthcare, will they be able to one day buy a home and get a decent job?

He’s running for them, and I ask you to run with him.

Virginia Foxx has turned her back on the young people he fought for hisENTIRE life.

That is why he is determined to defeat her and restore true and honest representation to the people of the fifth district.

In Congress, he will fight for affordable healthcare, low interest loans for college students, real economic development that brings jobs back to western North Carolina, and a swift end to the war in Iraq.

Mr. Carter believes that people are tired of traditional politicians who run for office every few years just to prove that they can.

What we need, and what the people of the 5th district are yearning for, is someone who is willing to represent them, someone who was BORN HERE, who has worked here, and who understands the needs of our people.

Roy served as a coach and educator in these communities all of his life and is proud that he received the endorsement of the North Carolina teachers association, the National Education Association, Democracy for America, and the Winston-Salem Journal.

Roy is the candidate who has shown that he is prepared to defeat Virginia Foxx and take back our district for the people.

FOR US.

Unlike Virginia Foxx, his voting record will always reflect the common values and best interests of the constituents.

WE THE PEOPLE.

When it comes down to a difficult vote in Congress, Roy will put people above politics every single time.

So, Make no mistake, this shall be a campaign against those who covet power, by those who require liberty.

It is not just his campaign, it is OUR campaign.

If every one of you, were to demand representation that will command and earn your respect, that shall be your first step in obtaining it.

So demand it!

We demand to be represented by one of our own, by someone who grew up here, who knew our grandparents, who taught our brothers and sisters. And who would never turn his back on us.

Therefore we must liberate this land on our own.

And it is Foxx that stands in our way.

Because, She has remained loyal to those war-waging scoundrels for what amounts to little more than a schoolgirl crush on George W. Bush.

But We're building momentum now, - and it's flowing down the mountains like the storm waters of justice.

So No longer shall WE remain silent.

We're here, we're back, and we're not backing down.

The Nation, did a cover story about our county party's resurgence, so now it’s time to put our PASSION where our mouth is.

We're going to reach out and bring others to our cause with a zeal that's never before been witnessed.

With a passion that will make headlines and a commitment that will carry over for years to come.

We will hit every street, travel down every gravel road, climb every mountain, and walk every field spreading the seeds of redemption in this district.

Coach Roy Carter has laid everything on the line to bring his former students home, and out of harms way.

And I ask you to join him now, measure your worth, and stand up with him, for no more war, and a change in direction.

Folks, a campaign for Congress will never hit this close to home.

This is our native son, running for our best interests, and I don’t know about you but I refuse to lose this one.

So we have to take that extra step, to make ONE MORE phone call, or email. To write ONE MORE letter, or postcard, and to increase your efforts in WHATEVER way you can.

Folks, this is personal, this is a personal campaign.

I’m skipping classes to attend campaign events, AND To KNOCK ON DOORS.

I’m constantly running on an empty tank of gas traveling from Boone to Ashe to Forsyth and back here to Wilkes, almost every day.

So I’m asking you to HELP ME, to Help ROY, and to help yourselves.

The day after Roy announced I called Roy him at his office at North Wilkes High Achool and offered my services, and my time.

I said, “Put me in coach, I’m ready to WIN,”

So today, I ask you to join me, stand up, and get up OFF THAT SIDELINE.

And get ready to win.

I'm second and will go back and tell the other thread.

Hey, don't forget to include me in the insults of Linda NM, Huron and Mike.  :-)

Of course I'm *hopeful.*....just not for the dems or for winning in Nov., especially if Huck or Condi are on the ticket.

You guys are confusing negativity with being objective.   I worked hard for Dean and then Kerry.  This time I'll work a bit only to remove Smith.

Today's Met opera (broadcast on NPR stations) is called Satyagraha by Philip Glass a contemporary American composer who has written a lot of film music among other stuff.

It's on as we write.   I love Philip Glass.

Agree, Mike.  But together, I think they could win.  At least there'd be a chance.

Hope?  What kind of word is that?  It has nothing to do with present conditions or circumstances; it waffles about in some future possibility that almost smacks of magical thinking.  Plus it leads to high expectations of another person and that almost always leads to disappointment or despair or anger or...or....

OTOH, perhaps hope is nothing more than positive thinking, which might be magical or not .  As Phil says, with work, it can be powerful.  I just won't work for either one in the primary.  My *hope* died after JE left the race.

What BO represents is a faith-based candidacy based on hope for change.  Cynics like me don't buy that.  This is not a slam against intelligent bloggers who are much less skeptical than I; and likely more intelligent.

I have a plan and here it is is one thing; I have hope is quite another.

Did you all hear that HC wants to scrap NCLB and BO wants to fix it?  Just keeping the record straight.  These statements came out in the last debate (from her) and a previous one (from him).

Nor am I advocating for HC.

Gore would not only be a great candidate since he's found his voice and changed dramatically, but he would win IMO.

Yes, Dean challenged the CM and was destroyed.  JE also challenged the corporations and he was destroyed.  HC and BO quietly whine  about the media and are allowed to continue.

Fix is in for the MIC and continued multi-national rule.  And of course, endless war  "to protect America's interests."

Sometimes I think Gore and Edwards are impacting HC more than BO.  I think both are being leaned on hard.

That's it for me for awhile.  Betcha you're all glad about that, huh?  :-)

Mike: Good luck to Roy Carter in his primary against Diame Hamby.

Anyone Democrat (and others) who has watched the House in session and watching and listening to Virginia Foxx already know how divisive and radical she is in her beliefs. She must be defeated. Roy sounds like the guy who can do that.

Pin the Problem on ABC?

Day two and the Democratic debate fallout continues. Turns out the lady who asked Obama the question about the Flag Pin, in a prerecorded tape made by ABC, had already told the New York Times that she could not support Barack Obama--because of his sometimes aversion to wearing flag pins. So, it wasn't really a question from an undecided voter as much as a jibe from someone who had already declared publicly that she was against Obama. Or as Howard Kurtz puts it:

In other words, in staging a debate between Obama and Hillary Clinton, ABC deliberately gave a platform to a Pennsylvanian who had indicated in advance that she could not support one candidate. McCabe's question, which was expanded upon by moderator Charlie Gibson, forced Obama to defend his patriotism.

Barack Obama first came onto my radar after he spoke at the Dem Convention in 04...Frankly, I was far more excited about him than {{snore}} John Kerry.  I read Barack's autobiography when it came out....2006.

It is an autobiography intended to introduce himself to the world as he clearly intended to be a major player in the world (no problem with that).  I enjoyed reading about who he is, his background, etc.

However, his autob. is NOT particularly insightful, in any specific way, as to his policy prescriptions.  That fred drags it up (what the 2nd book fred has ever read?) is predictable and well, I'll leave it at that....utterly predictable.

and fred, pls refrain from sharing your children's pant-sh!tting episodes.

Mike and seashell are the same people today that they were a few years back in terms of blogging habits.  That neither are enamoured with Obama is the primary reason that they're both being attacked now, imo, as well as Linda NM.

They don't remark any differently than they did before.  That's a bullsh!t argument.

Paine, while I think direct commentary trumps passive aggressive any day...I'm a bit surprised that you tried to bring about a "dogpile on Mike" from the whole blog.  glad everyone refrained from joining in.  I've also addressed Mike's Anglophile stuff head on when it gets to be too much for me.

Peace out peeps....be honest and remember that it IS MCCAIN THAT WE MUST BEAT.

and Obama is not a shoe-in....going to be a long hard slog.

Sea, I don't like Olmert.  He lacks the leadership skills to bring about peace.  His goal is not, however, total domination of the entire ME by Israel.  His concern is his country.

Saudi Arabia's leadership would die a million deaths if Israel were dismantled.....it is the whipping stone that they use to keep their masses focused on as opposed to their own oppresive gvmts. Americans truly interested in ME peace should confront the oppressive Arab gvmts....oil rich Sheiks that control those countries....they are truly evil.

You realize that those Sheiks are among the worlds wealthiest people?  Watch for the wealthiest in the world list produced annually by Forbes.....the sheiks are always in the top 20....multi, multi-billionaires....yet perfectly content to let their own people live in abject poverty, uneducated, no health care.

They LOVE that Israel is there.....easy deflection.

John wrote "Tom asked me yesterday if I would care to name the 41 Democratic senators who could sustain a filibuster. Well, with the exception of a few hard right Republicrats like Feinstein, Landrieu, and the Nelsons, I would expect them all onboard given any kind of leadership."

I have the same problem as you; I can't name them either, which means the filibuster is not a viable option.

I'm not to staunch this week-in, week-out colloquy, but suffice it to say, I don't think that the lack of resolve among Democrats, which you allude to on a regular basis, is an argument against ceding the political landscape to Republicans.  Look at it as a continuum, you have Republicans, bad Democrats and good Democrats.  The Republicans are bad for the most part, while the Democrats are a more diverse group.  The odds, therefore, are with us when we boost the number of Democrats elected to office.

That's all I'm up to.  I have no vested interest in venerating Democrats, but I absolutely agree with Dean that true Democratic principles deserve support, and the more Democrats there are to advance them, the better the chances are that they'll be advanced.

cC, I agree about the sheiks.  The Hitler/Grandpa Bush/Saudi incest goes back many years. Money and arms.

The thing with Olmert is true about his protection of Israel....but....I don't think he is a good choice for being part of the new J Street lobby, since he's not shown to be that interested in peace.

That said, one of the articles either you or I posted, claim that J Street will be financially backing those critters who are seriously looking for a two state or some state solution and that's very hopeful.  It sounds like they have some good peeps on board, with the exception of Olmert, but maybe that's to throw a bone to AIPAC.

Just got back from my Caucus In Newport News. VA. Things went quite well. I got a lot of good feedback of the job I did.

We elected 21 Obama delegates and about 6 alternates.

I am one of the Obama delegates and so is my husband.

Right before the deadline bobby Scott's office sent over a bunch of applications and they all came and voted for each other.

So about 6 of our city committee members did not make it as delegates.

But the rules said you just had to be a registered voter and said you had to say you would vote democrat in the election.

So I am now a delegate to the 3rd congressional and state convention.

Actually, Olmert is probably a moderate next to Netanyahu.  In his book Avi Shlaim thought Netanyahu was the worst.  His words were the harshest for him of any other leader, and he did explain why.  The book is well documented.

The 2006 war was a travesty but could have been a lot worse.  It could have still been going on today, especially with people like cChalfonte being a cheerleader for IDF macho bombing runs of civilian areas.

=======================

You are trying to compare the Arabs to Jews.  It is comparing apples to nutmeg.  The are not bound to each other the way Jews are.  Arabs are more like Christians.  They are associated with loose broad cultural ties,  but are different nationalities and cultures, often fight against and among each other historically.  When was the last time you saw different sects of Judaism having wars with each other.

It may never have occurred to you that the Arabs hold Israel in contempt, and support the Palestinian cause, NOT BECAUSE they have close ties with the Palestinians, but because what Israel and the West did to them was unjust and wrong - their land and ancestral home was literally stolen by force.

Jordan,  Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt have fought against Israel, not necessarily to defend the Palestinian, but because they knew if not stopped, they could suffer the same fate, as the Jewish State expanded and disenfranchises all who are not Jewish, reducing the inhabitants to second class citizens, or refugees, and building an Iron Wall of force, importing Jews from all over the world

We don't see it that way because we believe in the mythology of Moses and manifest destiny as an excuse.  Jews have always live in Palestine, it was never taken away from them by the Arabs, but the opposite is true.

It is astounding how much of the rhetoric Obama is using today in his campaign is so much like his book he wrote in 1994 13 years ago and his experiences in South Chicago.

I compare this to Clinton who talks the talk of the day and what people want to hear that day while Obama's speeches reflect what he has been saying for at least 13 years.

Facing Obama Fund-Raising Juggernaut, Clinton Seeks New Sources of Cash

The Obama fund-raising juggernaut has some of Mrs. Clinton’s most devoted supporters worried and searching for a new way to support her candidacy. Alan Patricof, a national finance chairman for Mrs. Clinton, said four people had called him in the past month to discuss starting a so-called 527 group — named for the section of the tax code the groups are organized under — on her behalf.

37 is correct, although I can understand cC thinking what she did was plausible.

Yoooooo Hooooooo.  Lotsa intelligent women here..including yours truly.

Audrey's acerbic wit is fabulous.

It's a pity that even the women on this blog are becoming divided and people are taking sides and jabbing away.

It's kinda hard to scroll a one liner...easier to scroll me.  The problem with scrolling me is that sometimes I post very cool or informative stuff.  LOL  Keeps you on your toesies.

We'll figure something out Joan.  I don't know how to do them either.

Leave it to you, sea, to chime in and point out that you're intelligent.  I should have bet the house.  Acerbic wit is not flattering to anyone, least of all the one trying to hit that mark.  It usually misses and in this case, came totally unprovoked.  Or did you miss that?  Audrey comes out of nowhere, drops a pile of poop, you defend it (and yourself re: intelligence).

What is flattering about that, as a woman?

Audrey months ago you told me not to interact with you.  Why do you choose to still interact with me by comment on my posts?

I deal with people like you all the time, whether I want to or not, in my job.  I don't have to do it here. If you can't heed your own advice to not interact with me, expect me to not give you the same consideration.

Sorry if I had to spell that out for you.

No you are tiresome audrey, very much so.  And YOU started this by commenting on my post, the only one that contained the word "tiresome" up until your response to that post.  Yours was the second.

Now knock off your bullshit.  You like to stir up trouble.  I hope you continue to work on that lacking part of your personality.  It's not becoming at all.

YOU started this.  We all always see it.

Our blog is sometimes cynical, when some are paying attention. Not tiresome.

The proof of the pudding is in #37 40 42 43. Twisting is tiresome.
