And the Winners Are: First Round of DFA-Democracy for New Mexico Endorsements

Written by: Barbara Wold on Apr 14, 2008 4:49 PM EDT

Linked to groups: DFA-Democracy for New Mexico - Albuquerque

The voting ended late last week and the votes are counted. Members of the Albuquerque DFA-Democracy for New Mexico Meetup group were polled on the candidates they wanted the group to officially endorse in a number of this year's Dem primary races. They included the NM-01 race for U.S. House, three State Senate races and one State House contest. Here are the results and responses from some of the winners:

(Click Read More for the rest of this post)

Mheinrich1_2

U.S. House NM-01
81.6% - Martin Heinrich: Winner
13.1 % - Michelle Lujan Grisham
05.3 % - Robert Pidcock
00.0% - Rebecca Vigil-Giron

"Our campaign for change is powered by volunteers who are committed to creating good paying jobs, turning our economy around and bringing the disastrous war in Iraq to an end," said Martin Heinrich. "I'm pleased that DFA-DFNM, a volunteer, grassroots organization committed to changing Washington has joined our large and diverse coalition of supporters that include 15 labor unions, two pueblos, the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club and over 2000 individual contributors."

Echavez

State House District 13
88.8% - Eleanor Chávez: Winner
11.1% - Dan Silva (incumbent)

Egriegonew

State Senate District 14
100.0% - Eric Griego: Winner
000.0% - James C. Taylor (incumbent)

"Thank you, members of DFA-Democracy for New Mexico, for your endorsement and vote of support! DFNM is a great example of grassroots democracy in action," said Eric Griego. "I look forward to working with DFNM and other groups to bring real reform to NM politics."

Jblair

State Senate District 15
78.3% - John Blair: Winner
21.7% - Tim Eichenberg

Timkeller

State Senate District 17
100.0% - Tim Keller: Winner
000.0% - Shannon Robinson (incumbent)

"I am honored to be endorsed by DFA-Democracy for New Mexico, a group that proudly stands up for progressive Democratic values. You can count on me to be a champion on the issues that affect our families—healthcare, improved education and job creation," said Tim Keller

As you can see, the top vote getters, percentage-wise, were Eric Griego, who was endorsed by DFA-DFNM in his mayoral run in 2006, and electoral newcomer Tim Keller. However, the group had strong favorites in every race, with the winners receiving a large majority of the votes.

Of course New Mexico's races for three open U.S. House seats and one open U.S. Senate seat are receiving the bulk of the political coverage here, but there are many lively primary races for seats in the New Mexico Legislature that also deserve attention. Progressive candidates strongly supportive of ethics and campaign reform and other measures that have gotten little traction in the Legislature are challenging long-time incumbents in a number of Dem primaries. Is a shakeup in the works?

The DFA-DFNM Meetup group plans to make endorsements in a number of other local races in the near future. But for now, congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who participated!

You're encouraged to support the candidates who won by donating to their campaigns and/or signing up as volunteers for phone banking and canvassing. Every dollar and every hour contributed can pack a big wallop in local races, especially those for Legislative seats. Even if you don't live in a candidate's district, it makes sense to offer support. The more progressive Legislators we elect, the better chance there is for passage of criitical measures like universal health care, ethics and campaign reform, improved funding for education and many more.

Someone wanna send Hillary out duck huntin' w/Cheney?

I hear he's a great shot (they can do Crown Royal shooters, too).

My father took me target shooting in a gravel pit when I was about 8 yrs. old.

Yes, it's a Maine tradition w/the rednecks (better than in the woods).

Scared the shit out of me--I took one shot, and that was it for Moi.

But Seashell, aren't you concerned about the blatant and unsupported propaganda (even worse than the WMD BS) pushing this country toward attacking a sovereign nation that poses no threat to anyone (including Israel, which is once again trying to drive our ME policy)?

We have continually screwed over Iran since 1950, and the maniac in the White House seems determined (with enthusiastic support from neocons and McCain, and no real opposition from Democrats, including HC and BO) to destroy yet another ancient civilization.

Phil,

IF Im wrong about Mccain then that simply signals that this countyr may be on the verge of growing up now and joining the ranks of "civiilized" nations..................also, more importanltly that those who have assisted in ushering in the last 8 years by allowing Reagan in 2x, Bush 1, and Bush 2 2x may have discovered the erors of their ways..................

This would be a good thing then.............and the start of a long process of reflection and hopefully change........................I wont hold my breath though

“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

Obama

Please opine why he would use the word punish.  And please remember that I'm the messenger....and pro-choice.

Both candidates are shooting themselves in the foot IMO.

You *don't* think forcing, say, a thirteen year old girl to go through pregnancy is exactly the kind of "punishment" the right wing has in mind for such transgressions? Same goes for, say, AIDS. . . .

What are you unable to see about this, sea?

It's the word "punishment."  It's a harsh word, too often used and acted upon in this society ... we live in a very punishing society and keeping up the punishment mentality isn't hopeful.

I would have said, "We need to teach contraception so that young women like my daughters don't have unwanted pregancies."

His wording was interesting enuf, to me, to warrant a discussion, that's all.

I see your point of view, puddle.  Can you see see mine?  :-)

It's not a right/wrong, good/bad thing.

Some people here claim that words are very important.  OK, why use that word?  How will that affect the voters?

I think Obama's uses the word 'punish' in association with what some might call 'a bad situation' because that's often what oppressed, surpressed, (even bitter!) people do - they associate the 'bad luck' of their personal situation with a punishment - some as in a punishment from God, some as in a karmic punishment for past actions and some just use that terminology.  jmho.

and that's not to say that I think Obama is/was oppressed, suppressed or (bitter!) - but I do think he understands that feeling from his experiences with so many different cultures and communities.

re: Some people here claim that words are very important.

I'm on that list - but I think the totality of what a person thinks and says is more important than parsing a word here or a word there - Obama admits that he's sure to be inartful from time to time.  from reading his book I've realized how deeply he understands people - he really, truly listens to them and I believe that much of what he learns becomes a part of him.  he learns and grows along the way and I respect the lessons I've seen him learn and the corrections he's made along the way.

The MSM keep going on and on and on about a non-issue.

Why isn't this being reported?

Bill Clinton, China linked via his foundation

A firm that has donated to the president's charity is accused of collaborating with the government in its crackdown on Tibetan activists. Hillary Clinton has spoken out against China's actions.

If you are naive and just too young to cope with adult decisions, and suddenly you find that the life you had a right to plan has been taken away from you, and you are expected to just accept this and not salvage your life, what would you call this? Punished sounds about right. A girl, not yet an adult being forced to take on such responsibility for life, that is certainly being punished.

great logo, mainefem!  Hillary can't complain about that one - she started that conversation....

rae - we really do need to see a complete list of the donors to that foundation of Bill's and/or at the very least to his presidential library.  we need to know who might try to call in their chips if Hillary gets the nod.  I'm not holding my breath, tho, unless the cm keeps picking away and finding these ties.  gee, investigative reporting - that would be a welcome novelty!

Being just another mere man blessed with two delightful, enchanting,amazing,awe-inspiring daughters, I have used nearly the same quote as Senator Obama. Instead of "punished with a baby", I said "spending the best years of your life raising a baby in the spare room in the basement." The meaning is about the same. The real story is that values are instilled and information is freely given. The message I get is that, just like me, Barack will live outside te comfort zone, moving heaven, earth, and dark roads once trod by the Cheney demon to make a better world for those daughters to amaze and enchant in.

And a good eve to you as well Jo! We're still at flood stage down here though the streams and brooks are starting to recede a bit...can pick up road closed signs in the morning on a road that was under water from the Connecticut river.

I'm so sick of the fact that the CM is so out of touch real America.

working on calling delegates to make sure they have their own alternate if they aren't going

no one is taking anything for granted here in the Obama camp, we will be at full numbers for the district convention

that should make Edwards finally not viable and free up his supporters to come on aboard and add another delegate to Denver

Yes, it does seem punishing to force a young woman to carry to term.  I would use a word like unwise or unkind.

Jo,

I liked your answer, thanks, and it clarified for me what I don't like about the word.  I grew up in a punishing *you are sinful* church.  The word reminds me of the stern Lutheran minister who tried to convince me that unbaptized babies go to hell.

And then there's bush punishing and torturing small animals, and then later punishing *criminals* in TX by executing them.

I don't like the word.  Nor do I like to think about the people in our jail system.  Or Shock and Awe...or the treatment of the Palestinians.  That's when I would use the word *punishing."

Thank you for the great responses....all of them.

Steve

I have usually hired young men and the line I use with them is "thinking with your gonads can get you into more than you bargined for" "use your head, instead"

great to have a candidate sure enough of himself to speak freely isn't it?

Hormone surges among City traders could be partly responsible for driving "boom and bust" economics, say researchers.

A Cambridge University team found testosterone levels were directly linked to the profit they made.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study also found levels of the stress hormone cortisol could affect the risks they took.
