Fairness, Math, and Primary Realities

Written by: David Reiter on Apr 6, 2008 12:13 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Florida DFA

It is still possible for either Obama or Clinton to win the Democratic Primary. Here is what needs to happen for one or the other to win. The race is not over, and all voters need to make sure they continue the pattern of record turnouts and vote for their candidate.

First, the math:

Number of Delegates to win the nomination: 2,024 Remaining Delegates: 914

Current Delegates

Obama: 1,629; Needed to win: 395; % of remaing delegates needed to win: 43.2%

Clinton: 1,486; Needed to win: 538; % of remaining delegates needed to win: 58.8%

(Click Read More for the rest of this post)

Realities:

Clinton would have to have landslide victories in each of the remaining 10 contests and receive almost 60% of the remaining Super Delegates to win. As a result, it is highly unlikely that she can win, even if the Florida and Michigan delegates were seated as is. Obama only needs to win a contest or two to ensure his nomination, or just make sure he does not lose each contest by more than 15%. As a result it is very likely that Obama will be the next Democratic nominee.

Fairness:

Michigan cannot be seated as is. Only Clinton was on the ballot, and her campaign's insistence on seating them as is shows a genuine disregard for simple fairness. Without a revote in Michigan, or some sort of caucus ofrsimilar activity, I do not see how a credentials committee will allow them to be seated as is.

It can be argued that Florida's votes should count, because we had a record turnout. That being said, Obama has not had a chance to campaign in Florida and had very little name recognition in comparison with former First Lady, Clinton. Both states would obviously like their voices to be heard and have impact on the nomination, but a fair option for both candidates has not yet been presented to the DNC.

Even if all delegates were seated unfairly as is, Clinton would still be trailing Obama. If Obama can win a just a couple races and gain half the remaining Super Delegates, he will meet the 2,024 threshhold needed for the nomination without Michigan or Florida being counted. If Florida and Michigan are not counted until the Convention, it is mathmatically almost impossible for Clinton to secure the nomination, because Obama will be first to reach the 2,024 threshhold without the 2 states--Clinton requires those 2 states--as is--to have a chance. However, as is, is not fair or likely to happen.

No matter who gains the nomination, we should all rally behind that person because McCain would be a further disaster. To vote for McCain in protest or "because you don't know Obama well enough," or 'Hillary is too much of a 'B'," is a cop out. Check into Obama's website and learn about him if you don't feel you know him enough. Know that Clinton will not appoint super right-wing judges to the Supreme Court, will have a good economic team, and will have better judgement than McCain. It is the media's and Republican's best interest to sow seeds of divisiveness within the Party--we just cannot let that happen with some silly, shoot-yourself-in-the-foot strategy of withholding your votes from either Dem. nominee.

In either case---we must come together and vote for the Democratic nominee in November because our future depends on it!

Hillary is done--put a fork in her.

It's impossible for her to win unless she cheats or insists on unfairness.  If Michigan counts at all she should be penalized for getting herself on the ballot, when she agreed not to to like all the other candidates.  A true Primary in Michigan would actually go to Obama according to polls, anyway.

For the good of the Party and of teh country, Hillary should step aside--it is pure ego that is keeping her in this race, and her viciousness is what is threatening the Party.

A true Primary in Michigan would actually go to Obama according to polls, anyway

Alan is right according to the past polls I have seen also. There haven't been recent polls there that I know of since the election there is over.

There have been no recent polls here in Fla either, but Obama could win or tie here as well. I was looking over the contributors in Florida in my are. There ave been at least twice as many Obama contributors here as there are Clinton supporters since the beginning of the year. Remember that Obama never got to campaign anywhere in Florida  AT ALL prior to our primary and was still virtually unknown though he is well-known here now.

~~~~~~~~~~
 David Reiter,
There is NO CHANCE that Hillary Clinton can win enough pledge delegates in the contests left, unless you consider a Hail Mary might  somehow change the totals for her.
Obama will win the most delegates in North Carolina, SD, Oregon, and Montana and a good amount, if not most, in Indiana. WV, KY and PR have very few delegates no matter who gets them.
As Howard said this morning, it is the number of delegates that will win the nomination and he added it has nothing to do with the popular vote, number of states or the size of the states.
Hillary Clinton in new 'misspeak' blunder
By Toby Harnden in Washington
Last Updated: 12:30am BST 07/04/2008
Hillary Clinton faced fresh embarrassment yesterday after a story she told about the state of America's health care system was disclosed as inaccurate.
The former First Lady, who last month admitted she was guilty of a "misspeak" when she was forced to backtrack after embellishing an account of landing under sniper fire in Bosnia, has crossed the country telling voters a shocking tale of a woman and her baby who died after being refused medical treatment. Mrs Clinton said that a hospital in Ohio turned the woman away twice while she was experiencing complications in pregnancy.
On a visit to Wyoming, she said: "It hurts me that in our country, as rich and good a country as we are, this young woman and her baby died because she couldn't come up with $100 to see the doctor." But the woman has been identified as Trina Bachtel, a patient at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, who died last August two weeks after her baby was stillborn. She was treated and insured.
Rick Castrop, the chief executive officer of the O'Bleness Health System, said: "We implore the Clinton campaign to immediately desist from repeating this story."
David Reiter, There is NO CHANCE that Hillary Clinton can win enough pledge delegates
I think David knows that, and that is why he put the math up there, so that the facts speak for themselves without coloring it with opinion...at least I notice that is what he usually does.
That said, I think his points is that the Party needs to unite without feeding the media and GOP desires to sow division within the Party.
I wish you knew more of what you were talking about with the cost of mass mailings for fund raising (most of DFA's) rather than the constant bad mouthing. They aren't cheap, but if they didn't work, no one would use them.
every campaign uses them  ...  the Iowa Democratic Party has the same kind of expenses, because we return a buck and a half for every dollar we spend (which kind of sucks but we need the money)
I bet I'm not the only one who has gotten a letter from Howard, Jim, or the Obama campaign.
and quite a few refuse to use the internet, why leave them out
my farm returns about 15% so the fundraising by mail looks more like a sure thing to me and I'll bet it is for DFA
one out of twenty answers the letter with a few bucks I'll bet
you and I might put our money in a good blog and a bat, but somehow they haven't figured that one out here
According to sources, the Beavers chose Robinson over IUPUI coach Ron Hunter — just days after the school was spurned by San Diego's Bill Grier.
Robinson, who is the brother-in-law of presidential candidate Barack Obama, led Brown to an 19-10 mark and an 11-3 Ivy League record this past season, his second with the school.
Food additives 'could be as damaging as lead in petrol'
By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent
Saturday, 5 April 2008
Artificial food colours are set to be removed from hundreds of products after a team of university researchers warned they were doing as much damage to children's brains as lead in petrol.
Academics at Southampton University, who carried out an official study into seven additives for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), said children's intelligence was being significantly damaged by E-numbers....
Needleman [a researcher] found the difference in IQ between high and low lead groups was 5.5 IQ points ... This is very close to the sizes obtained in our study of food additives."..
It would be interesting if Barack doesn't do well with Catholics.  While he supports Roe v. It is a mystery but probably having more to do with the culture catholics come from. Many Catholic immigrants share the white supremacy characteristics of Southern Whites, although  the remnants of the open wounds of the civil war made it more severe down there, I imagine.
Ministry's gay event sparks Fresno dispute
Exodus International says homosexual desires are sinful; protesters disagree.
By Bethany Clough / The Fresno Bee
04/05/08
A national Christian ministry that encourages homosexuals to change brought its campaign to a Fresno church for three days -- sparking a protest Saturday by those who say its message is potentially harmful.
Inside the Bridge Evangelical Free Church, speakers from Exodus International prayed for freedom from homosexual desires and actions they said were sinful.
Outside, on a sidewalk along Ashlan Avenue, protesters said being gay isn't a sin and homosexuals do not need to be reformed.
The opposing viewpoints echoed a debate that has played out across the country. The Orlando-based Exodus and a handful of other groups have sought to present what they describe as a Christian alternative to a gay lifestyle. But their efforts have inspired a backlash from people who say such an approach can lead to self-loathing. ...full article: http://www.fresnobee.com/263/story/50676...
WE SUPPORT:
....1.  Legalizing marijuana.
=====================
We have to be careful with this.  Possession of marijuana should be completely legal with some restrictions, but smoking it should not be completely legal.  The location and close proximity downwind to many location needs to very restrictive, like tobacco, even more so, because it is a more mind-altering than tobacco and has more potential for anaphalytic reaction to those who breathe it as a second hand smoke.
Children need to be educated as to the fertility cycle, both monthly and long term over a life-time.  The life cycle of the sperm and egg, the hormones released, and tools for detecting those homone surges, like urine sticks, and vaginal fluid texture is important.   Irregularities in the cycle and post-fertility "safe" time of cycle may be pointed out.  It should also be maintained that if fertility avoidance as a method of birth control is not fool-proof, but if the point of ovulation can be detected adequately, the later afterwards, the safer it is.
This education can be taught from the perspective of attaining pregnancy or avoiding it, or just a question of knowing one's body.  Males should be taught about cycles, fluid build up, prostate and testicular concerns and their function.  Stimulation and release.
Classes should be segregated for reason of distraction and embarrassment, but the knowledge should be the same, boys should also learn about girls, as girls should also  learn about boys.
I do not think it is the place of public education  to promote invasive bodily-placed devices and drugs for the purpose of birth control.  Devices can fail.  People can use them improperly. There can be no guarantees they are 100% effective, but promoting devices gives  the implication that they always are.  However I do think literature should be made available about device and birth control drugs, if they want to educate themselves, or want to go somewhere like Planned Parenthood for more information.
I was discussing one day with the manager of our locally owed small rural grocery store why they don't offer any over the counter birth control or pregnancy tests. She said it's because they always get stolen. But our small locally owed liquor store always has an ample supply of condoms on sale. The truth is always very telling. They're way too many "goodie two shoes" types in rural America these days that need to learn how to mind their own business.
