The Supreme Court and Guns
The Washington Post reports on Washington, DC's handgun ban and the Supreme Court case which will be argued this week:
Despite mountains of scholarly research, enough books to fill a library shelf and decades of political battles about gun control, the Supreme Court will have an opportunity this week that is almost unique for a modern court when it examines whether the District's handgun ban violates the Second Amendment.
The nine justices, none of whom has ever ruled directly on the amendment's meaning, will consider a part of the Bill of Rights that has existed without a definitive interpretation for more than 200 years.
"This may be one of the only cases in our lifetime when the Supreme Court is going to be interpreting the meaning of an important provision of the Constitution unencumbered by precedent,'' said Randy E. Barnett, a constitutional scholar at the Georgetown University Law Center. "And that's why there's so much discussion on the original meaning of the Second Amendment.''

Good firsties, Audrey.
A BO/Sibelius ticket is a sure loser. I'd be really hard-pressed to vote for that one. Sibelius a heart beat away? I think not. We shall see about who has good judgment. Sibelius is KS, Boxer is CA. It's a no brainer even for me. :-)
from the above article by Huron:
"This is nowhere more evident than with the media blackout of the Winter Soldier Investigations in Silver Spring, Maryland from March 13 through March 16. You would think that the spectacle of several hundred servicemen and women and ex-servicemen and women who have served in Iraq gathering to expose major war crimes as well as maltreatment of veterans, not to mention Iraqis, would warrant at least a few seconds of coverage. But no, this is nowhere to be found. When I search the NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX NEWS, or even NPR websites, I get, at best, some links to the Vietnam Era Winter Soldier Investigation, if that. Oh, and there is some mention of a Winter Soldier character in a Captain America Marvel comicbook. That sums it all up, doesn't it? The Holocaust taking place in Iraq, trumped by a comic book in our cartoon culture."

Rooney, you are off-the-wall because on one hand you disparage the corporate pollution in our lives and their power over government, and then you condone a laissez-faire tax-cut, small government deregulated libertarianism.
government has a purpose. To speak in behalf of the common person and regulate the forces of business, trade and capitalism. You cannot play a game without rules and referees.

'Fox News Sunday' prods Obama on no-show
WASHINGTON - Hoping to prod Barack Obama into appearing on its show, "Fox News Sunday" launched the "Obama Watch," a weekly update on the number of days the Democratic presidential candidate has failed to appear on the program.
Host Chris Wallace said Sunday that Obama promised him in March 2006 that he would come on the show, but the Illinois senator has since demurred.
Since then, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, has been a guest twice and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the likely Republican nominee for president, has shown up a half dozen times.
...
McCain is a poor puppy. I doubt that his brain disfunction is a result of his incarceration. More likely, flying up in the stratosphere has a negative effect. That might account for Bush Two, as well.
We've been very forgiving of mental disabilities. Think of Ronald Reagan. But, I'd argue that we can't afford that at present.
Re FOX--I'd suggest that there are plenty of videos on YouTube that they could show. Whole speeches, in fact.
That programming would be just as cheap as having Obama on live and more informative.

Well, if Obama becomes president and he still does not show up on FOX for an interview, does that mean that FOX news will be irrelevant ? That it's viewers will be even less knowledgeable about current events ?
Yes, and it's not as if they didn't get plenty of advance notice about the Winter Soldier event. However, it's sure not to fit into the script, so we'll have to wait at least six months for it to be convered.
Besides, if our troops did commit attrocities, all the more reason to expect that the Iraqis will be wanting to take revenge. At this point, it really is a no-win situation. How do you convince people steeped in guilt that they have nothing to fear?
SEASHELL....
tHANKS, i WAS firsty then fourthies, and now sixies. Pretty soon it will be on the next thread, lol.
Pretty interesting story about former Gov. of Al Siegelman now in jail for bribery. Some are saying it was a political case. Now someone is saying he is being beaten in jail. A poster at DKos who is not revealing the source, but is saying it is unimpeachable. They are asking for an investigation and his release from jail.
Funny how the Repugs are so anxious to impeach, jail and ridicule Dems, but we can't bring ourselves to impeach Cheney and Bush.
The article about Siegelman is at DU.

Presumably, when Barack Obama is president he will answer the questions of FOX reporters the same as any other press person's. In the normal course of events, free media tends to be conditioned on paid ads. So, one suspects that FOX is really complaining about not making any money off the Obama campaign. But, of course, it wouldn't be politic to say that, would it?
As much as I don't like guns and killing, if Americans' guns are taken away by the SC, it's paving the way for...yup....no way to protect ourselves against a police state. JMO
Let's start by getting those awful *I forgot what they're called* off the street. The ones that can kill 15 people in one second...or something like that.
Anni, safe travels.
"How do you convince people steeped in guilt that they have nothing to fear?" by Monica
And the more the fear is conscious, or even unconscious, the more these people will want revenge against the innocent ones.

As Judy would say, think about it.
If the powers that be want a war prez with a VP who appeals to the crazy wing of the fundis, then McC wins. Especially in a close race, and they're all close these years, aren't they?

Thanks for reminding me audrey. I intended to send a check since i won't use PayPal. As I understand it, he was convicted for prompting a rich man to donate to a public service campaign and then "rewarded" him by appointing him to serve on some sort of authority. I don't know that the position to which the person was appointed actually pays a salary. The argument seemed to be that the person's position on the board would somehow promote his business associates. It is claimed that there was no evidence of Don Siegleman getting a penny for himself; only that he intended to provide an opportunity for someone else to benefit his friends.
Why will i send money for his defense? Well. because appeals cost money, even if the lawyers work pro bono. Gathering transcripts and interviewing witnesses with a court reporter present does not come free. But, what persuaded me was the little nugget of information that 90% of the African American voters in Alabama voted for him. That makes it clear that Don Siegleman is a nigger-lover and there's no more despised person in the South. Race traitors are responsible for blacks getting benefits and privileges that they don't deserve. You see, when you're sure that a population is worthless, then any advancement they achieve must be somebody else's fault. The suppression of African Americans has always been accomplished by destroying those who crossed the line.
Don Siegleman is lucky that he's merely in prison rather than buried in a levee like those civil rights workers of long ago. That's progress!
Obama has refused to go on FOX because of their attacks on him and because he believes they are not a reliable news source. if you haven't seen them yet, Greenwald has done 2 videos about it.
Hey, Judy, I just ran across NanceGreggs and will post this. Not trying to steal your thunder. :-)

A Little Even-Handedness (in Hopes That it Doesn’t Offend)
While I appreciate that tensions are at an all-time high around here these days, perhaps a little overall perspective might be in order – or might be shot down in flames, as the case may be.
There have been endless posts about how Obama doesn’t know what he’s up against when it comes to the inevitable Republican propaganda catapult being hauled out, readied for battle, and aimed in his direction.
The truth is that every time he’s been hit, he has not only survived, he has come out ahead of the game.
By the same token, Hillary came into the game having to face years of pent-up hatred from the RW, as a living symbol of everything despised by their ilk: from being the wife of the man who had the audacity to successfully challenge the inevitability of a George H.W. Bush presidency to being a woman who didn’t know her place – which, in GOP terms, lies somewhere between barefoot-and-pregnant and being seen but never, ever, under any circumstances, heard.
The inconvenient truth is that the GOP started preparing the onslaught of lies and innuendo to be aimed at Hillary years ago. They didn’t foresee (just as many Democrats did not foresee) that Barack Obama would come out of nowhere and become the front-runner.
No doubt they are busily working overtime to correct that oversight even as we speak. But to say that Hillary has been ‘completely vetted’, and there is nothing left for the Right to throw at her is, at best, naïve – and, at worst, delusional; almost as delusional as thinking that Obama is the darling of the MSM, and faces smooth sailing' from here on in.
But the real lesson to be learned here is that the Democrats have, for far too long, made their decision of who to run based solely on what nastiness the GOP might have up their sleeves, ready to unleash on some poor, unsuspecting candidate.
This was the point of my most recent post: if Christ himself was to try and run on the Democratic ticket, so-called cooler heads would prevail by declaring him too vulnerable to swiftboating to be a viable candidate.

Fox News certainly comes pretty close to Goebbels' ministry of propaganda.

Puddle will be happy to know -- last night I bought a hard copy of
Dreams from My Father - Obama's first book that he wrote in 1995. I've heard people say it was better than his last book.

Too, funny Fred. I got it myself yesterday, lol!
Monica....
I lived in Al in the fifties for about 6 months. One night a group of guys were going coon hunting, their way of saying they were going out to harass blacks. Of course I had to tell them what I thought, and they told my friend that if he didn't get "control" of his woman they would see to it that he did. They tried to preserve their white male supremacy from the pulpit to the community and the family. But, even then, there were those who wanted to change that, and hadn't found their voces yet.

Mark Magnier writes for The Los Angeles Times: "The spread of protests from Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, to neighboring communities and now Gansu province represents a crisis for a government eager to project an image of friendly confidence and cultural refinement in advance of the Beijing Olympics."
Yes, a boycott of the Olympics would be a disappointment for the athletes; but,...but, killing innocent Tibetans is much harder on the Tibetans, don't ya think?
I say boycott. With the human rights violations of China (and the U.S), the Olympics shouldn't be held there anyway. We need to stop enabling countries that war and enslave women and children.
Try Iceland next time. Or Lichtenstein. :-)
To continue the games in to say that sports come before the lives of Tibetans. Of course, here in the sports crazed U.S., that might be the case.
my 3 cents.
no boycott
