Encourage Douglas to Sign IRV Bill

Written by: Jessica Falker on Mar 14, 2008 2:49 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy For Vermont

IRV stands for Instant Runoff Voting. Here is a good explanation, using the Muppets, of how IRV works:

http://www.fairvote.org/irv/muppets/muppets.htm

Last year, the Vermont Senate passed a bill to use IRV in Vermont's election of our US Senators and US Representative. Yesterday, the Vermont House passed the Instant Runoff Bill by a vote of 81-60.  A comfortable margin, but not veto-proof. You can read the bill here:

 http://www.leg.state.vt.us/docs/legdoc.cfm?URL=/docs/2008/bills/senate/S-108.HTM

Please contact Gov. Douglas and encourage him to sign this bill (S.108):

- Phone: 802-828-3333
- Snail Mail: Governor Jim Douglas, 109 State Street, Pavilion, Montpelier, VT 05609-0101
- Through his website (less effective): http://governor.vermont.gov/contact.html

Talking Points provided by the League of Women Voters:

1. Tell the governor that you want him to sign S.108 because you want majority winners in congressional elections. Existing election rules create a "spoiler" risk each time there are more than two candidates, where a split majority can mean a candidate that the majority prefer can be defeated by a candidate that only a minority of voters find acceptable. That isn't democracy.

2. It worked well in Burlington after he signed that first IRV bill; ask him to be consistent, and not flip-flop and veto this second IRV bill.

3. In 2002, as a result of the work of the League of Women Voters, 56 town meetings voted on the issue, and 53 of them urged adoption of IRV for statewide elections.

4. Presidential candidates Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama  have both advocated adoption of IRV. Please don't veto Vermont's chance to improve our democracy.

Though this is a very worthy cause and I do support it, I am again requesting that you take me off this list serve.  I do not want to have any correspondence from Democracy from Vermont nor DFA since you decided to endorse in the Primary  and DFA pays for this group.

If you have trouble getting my email, please send out an email allowing people to unsubscribe.

How cool.  A message to remove someone from an email list written as a comment to a blog post, with the complaint that DFA for Vermont endorsed Obama.  Maybe its another Fox News viewer.

Sharon, I have removed you from the Democracy For Vermont DFA-Link Group. I can not remove you from the DFA national email list, but just to be clear, the primary endorsement was made by Democracy For Vermont (and 4 local DFA Groups in VT), not DFA national.

jjem, I thought Democracy for Vermont has endorsed a whole slew of candidates for office in the past, including Sanders and Welch.

Tom, yes, DFV has endorsed many candidates in the past 4 years through our bottom-up endorsement process. I don't think Welch was one of them...

Sorry, that was DFA.  So Sharon thinks DFA and VFA are very worthy causes which she supports, but does not want to hear from them because of the endorsement of someone she doesn't support.

I just heard from a DFV member that the phone number in this original post is "Temporarily Unavailable". That's the toll free number listed on the Governor's website, but I was able to get through to his office and leave a message using this number: 802 828-3333. I have updated the main post with the new number.

Tweety is all aflutter about Obama's pastor. I wonder if Tweety walked out of his Catholic church when he found out about all the priest's sex scandals. I say that as a disappointed Catholic.

KEEP OR RETURN THE CASH? VITTER v. SPITZER

Washington, DC – In light of the National Republican Congressional Committee’s call for candidates and members of Congress to return soon-to-be former Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s (D) donations, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) wonders why members and the National Republican Senatorial Committee have not returned Sen. David Vitter’s (R-LA) contributions. As widely reported, Sen. Vitter has solicited prostitutes in the past. Rather than being condemned and ostracized, Sen. Vitter received a standing ovation at a Republican Caucus luncheon after his transgressions became public.

Government officials must obey all laws, not just those with which they agree. .... read more: http://citizensforethics.org/node/31260

Quick hello,

It's really joyful to be able to praise a candidate I believe in, to celebrate the words and actions of someone who will serve We The People to the best of his/her ability, with integrity, intelligence, and humanity.

I remember so well that was the prevailing tone on this blog when Howard Dean was running. There was an excitement, a commitment, a trust and faith in the qualities of integrity, courage, and intelligence about what he reported was happening in our country.  It's a measure of why this blog and DFA, and especially their training has lasted for five years.

I've grown tired of the sourness, the speciousness, and the hostility of some on this blog who no matter what the argument, position, or information find a way to turn it into vomit.  But, that's the real world, and the fact that we can still be enthusisastic, thoughtful, combative at times, and persistent is something to be grateful for.

I was reading the piece on KOS which echoed my thoughts while watching this ridiculous media-driven "controversy about Obama and Pastor Wright.

 http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/3/14/163727/763/249/476734

Turneresq wrote an update to the piece suggesting that the whole thing should make it easier for Obama to "beat back" the Muslim smears.

The hot-air driven media have just boomeranged themselves!

It is smart for Obama to beginning meeting all the media just as Dean did in 2004. The idots at FAUX will say what they want but their viewers who watch no other news channels will get a good glimpse of someone they really want to support in Nov.

NY Governor-To-Be Boosts Black Pride

NEW YORK -- In Harlem and other predominantly black neighborhoods, they don't care how David Paterson becomes governor. They just care that he is taking over the state's top job.

The unexpected ascension of Paterson, the lieutenant governor, longtime lawmaker and heir to a Harlem political dynasty, has fueled a surge of black pride

A few graphs from Paul Beatty's entertaining article in TNR, "Cool We Can Believe In":

"Never mind the fact that I agree with the folks at Bossip.com that if Obama were white, the Democratic nomination would be over--and that if Hillary were black, she'd be Star Jones, and that if she were a black male, she'd be mayor of Detroit--it's obvious that Obama's candidacy isn't solely a matter of timing. His political narrative is not the fictional happenstance that placed Douglass Dilman into the Oval Office in Irving Wallace's The Man and cast Chris Rock into the Blockbuster bargain bin in Head of State. Barack has more going for him than good timing, the proper complexion, and the appearance of marital fidelity. He's got cool, and cool is the ultimate transcendent.

"It's a jazz man equipoise that has served him well. When the Clintons accused Obama of being a proponent of Ronald Reagan's ideas and of falsifying his anti-war stance, it was his coolness under fire that allowed his being quoted out of context to become an opportunity for him to recontextualize his ideology and leadership style. It's a cool that permits him to laugh off the slight of a debate moderator asking about Bill Clinton's being the first black president.

" . . . .

"I finally bought into the hype. 'That was cool.' I thought. 'I bet dude knows how many chambers there are in the Wu Tang.'

"Nobody--not Sharpton, not Bill Bradley, not Muskie, not Humphrey, not Chisolm, not one of his generation's cool presidential forebears--has ever contemplated using dancing ability as a measuring stick for any damn thing. For me, it was the equivalent to Hillary's New Hampshire diner blues--a sympathetic peek underneath the pancake make-up they both wear incessantly.

"It's not so much Barack's blackness that makes him hard to attack so much as it is his unaffected cool, because the state of being f'able is ineffable. How can you find the words to attack something that there are no words for?

"What's impressed me about Obama is that like any truly cool person, he doesn't seem to know how cool he is--although lately his campaign has started to feel a bit like watching Al Pacino in Sea of Love. Remember cringing in the theater, as Pacino acknowledged and embraced his cinematic cool? Transmogrified into a screaming nebbishy shadow of himself? The strange karate chop moves? His voice rising to feverish pitches for no apparent reason except that it worked in Dog Day Afternoon? Serpico ain't been the same since. And Obama hasn't been the same since Ohio, Texas, and Ferraro.

" . . . .

"Barack is starting to look a bit world-weary. The smile seems forced. The eyes don't sparkle as bright. But if I take a step back, I see that he hasn't lost his cool. In fact, his cool has only deepened. While under the utmost duress, he's reached that transcendental stasis that back in the day the homies referred to as 'maintaining.' Cops got your face pressed against the wall for no good reason, and someone asks how you're doing? You're maintaining. Bills due? Maintaining. Sitting through another agonizingly stilted Halle Berry performance? Maintaining. Running the first credible campaign for the White House, and Shelby Steele calls you not a challenger, but a bargainer? Maintaining.

"Yet isn't the hero always at his coolest when the outcome is in doubt? When times are toughest and knuckleheads like me are mistaking your passivity for cowardice? Right now Obama is Jackie Robinson circa 1947, standing on third, working the base path, plotting to steal home plate while feigning dumbfoundedness to the slurs hurled from the grandstand and the press box, from opponents and supposed teammates. . . ."

Obama tries to allay Jewish concerns

..."This is where I get to be honest, and I hope I'm not out of school here," Obama told Jewish leaders at the private meeting. "I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt an unwavering, pro-Likud approach to Israel that you're anti-Israel, and that can't be the measure of our friendship with Israel."

So this fiery pastor according to BO on Keithie, "brought me to Jesus."  Am I the only one bothered by that?  Could he be our very first born-again Xtian?

Good grief!  Now I understand Michelle's comment about finally being proud to be an American .. something very much like that.

Remember, I have no horse in this primary.  I'm looking at which one can beat McC.  This pastor story is not going away anytime soon.

So is he guilty by association?  If not, then no longer can HÇ be accused of that.  Pretty simple.  This is the goose and gander thingie.

Pat, out of curiosity, what do you consider "vomit?"  Where is your line between good discussion and "vomit?"
