The Truth About Barack Obama

Written by: Monica Smith on Mar 13, 2008 3:29 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Rockingham/Strafford DFA

Although the Democracy for America community voted to endorse progressive candidates for president and Senator Barack Obama was one of three who qualified, there's been no further endorsement and this email is not intended to be one.

The purpose of the email is to provide some factual information to people who may have been confused by gossip and a media script that often has little relevance to the election process.  Even if elections are mainly a voter-driven activity, it's important that the information distributed about the candidates be accurate.

Enjoy.  And, if you find it worth-while, pass it on.

Subject: The Real Truth About Barack Obama!

As enthusiastic volunteers in the Barack Obama campaign for the Presidency,  we have put together a list of facts about Barack so that you will know the truth about him. Please follow the links we have included for documentation  of these facts. If you value the truth as we do, please spread this information via email, blog, or any other means, to everyone you know.

  1. Did you know that Barack Obama is a Christian? He has been a member of the same United Church of Christ congregation for 20 years, and was married there to his wife Michelle in 1992. [1] [2] [3]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama often leads the US Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance? [4]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama is a strong friend of Israel and has spoken out strongly against anti-Semitism? [5] [6]
  1. Did you know his grandparents from Kansas were part of the "Greatest Generation"? His grandfather served with Patton's Army during World War II, and his grandmother, a real "Rosy the Riveter", worked in a bomber assembly plant back home. [7] [8] [9]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama was opposed to the war in Iraq from day one, before we invaded, even while he was running for the Senate, and knowing his opposition might be politically unpopular? [10]

"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world and strengthen the recruitment arm of al Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars." --Barack Obama, 2002

  1. Did you know Obama favors transparency over secrecy in our government?  Did you know that Obama worked with Republican Senator Tom Coburn to pass one of the strongest government transparency bills since the freedom of information act? He's calling it "Google for Government",  and you can see the results at www.usaspending.gov . Sen. Obama has  also released his own tax returns for public review. [11] [12] [13] [14]
  1. Did you know that after graduating with honors from Harvard Law School, Barack practiced civil rights law and also taught Constitutional Law for 10 years at the University of Chicago, one of the nation's best law schools, where he was consistently rated by his students as one of their best instructors? Did you also know that he was the first African-American elected president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review? [15] [16]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama is an outspoken advocate for women's rights and has been a principled defender of the civil rights of women? [17] [18]
  1. Did you know that despite the grueling schedule of running for President, Senator Obama remains a devoted family man, making time to do things like pick out a Christmas tree with his wife and two young daughters, or hurrying home to spend Valentine's Day with them? Did you know he hasn't missed a single parent-teacher conference while running for President? [19]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama has a stellar environmental record, including having the highest rating from the League of Conservation Voters (96%) of any Presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican? [20]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama has been an elected legislator longer than Senator Clinton? [21]
  1. Did you know that Barack is a member of all of these Senate Committees: Foreign Relations; Veteran's Affairs; Health, Education, Labor & Pensions; Homeland Security and Government Affairs?
  1. Did you know that Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become law, and has introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted since he joined the Senate in 2005?
  1. Did you know that Senator Obama sponsored legislation working together with Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar, to keep Americans safe by keeping dangerous weapons out of terrorist hands? The two senators also visited the former Soviet Union to inspect the decommissioning of nuclear weapons. Sen. Lugar said of Sen. Obama, "He does have a sense of idealism and principled leadership, a vision of the future." [22] [23]
  1. Did you know that Barack Obama is the only candidate running for president who voted against using cluster bombs in Iraq and the only candidate who supports banning the use of landmines?
  1. Did you know that, as an Illinois state senator, Barack Obama succeeded in passing legislation requiring the videotaping of police interrogations, gaining the respect and support not only of fellow legislators but that of the police, who had initially opposed the legislation?
  1. Did you know that Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Ulysses S. Grant, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton were all younger when they took office than Barack Obama will be?

During election season many emails are circulated about the candidates. Some are true, some aren't. It's often difficult to determine the truth. We encourage you to visit the following non-partisan sites that do a good job of fact checking the candidates.

Usually I suffer trolls, but not this one.

(and btw, we have to watch what we say NOW, becuz big white putz is monitoring us)

Good Socrates quote, Susan.

We do have so much that needs fixing, as Pat points out, but IMO very little will get done if we're bankrupt becuz of endless war.  We're going in  the potty becuz of war, becuz of Iraq, becuz of Afghan, becuz of arming other countries.  I don't see how we can avoid making the candidates talk about that FIRST.  We can't fix our country w/o money...and it's going down the drain in the ME and into corporate pockets and to the wealthiest of us.

First things first.  End the bloody wars and tell us how you're going to do that.  And I like what dog says about keeping a defense arsenal but don't keep badgering countries with it.

And somewhere along the way, that "special relationship" is gonna have to be dealt with or we stay in the ME forever and our country goes belly up, as it's doing with putz's I/P policy.

It's interesting how little foreign policy has been addressed in the *debates.*  There's a reason for that.

What does any church have to do with it? The racists used the same divisive argument against JFK. Don't be silly.

If folks really want to know what a church is about they need to attend one of their services before they pass judgement.

---

Folks need to honestly watch the film "The Birth of a Nation".

Doing so would free them of their self-imposed ignorance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birth_o...

If folks can't handle the view from that one, they should try this one.

I think I heard on NPR that we have over 600 military bases around the world.  We continue develop more and more weapons, now want to put missile bases in Eastern Europe. This is indeed insane, but that won't change through question and answer debates.  Moreover, a condidate won't get elected if he/she challenges this.  So, how do we change this?

An educated public, a thoughtful, debating public, a public that votes with its pocketbook, its committment to becoming active: campaigning, writing letters, contributing, caucusing, running for office, volunteering, etc.

We stand to lose so much because for whatever our egregious wrongs, and there have been plenty, there has been much good, and we have been a beacon for civil rights, human rights, opportunities, equality, education, privacy, security, and fairness. (It was interesting to discover in American Samoa how committed our children were to fairness, and how quickly that transferred to children there who at some point began to say, such and such an action or selection wasn't fair.).

Good discussion folks.  Off now.

Considering the conservative wags on TV (and I assume radio) are all apologizing for The Clintons' racial skullduggery against Obama, and Reeps are crossing over in open primaries to vote for Hillary, it's pretty apparent who they want to run against.

Susan Rowe....

Imagine the devastation in the area if we hadn't given poppy seed to Afghanistan amd WMDs to Hussein and nuclear secrets to Israel. I'm sure I'm forgetting many of our gifts to the ME. that have enriched their lives

=============================

I don't believe we gave any nuclear secrets to Israel.  The Presidents were more discreet in the 1960s than they are now.  They had their own scientists and their own technology which they kept secret from the USA, but when intelligence discovered their nuclear our gift was a kind of "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Actually the French played the largest role according to Shlaim, The Iron Wall,:

 [circa 1957]

"Details emerged only in 1995 when Shimon Peres published his memoirs:...

"....The negotiations with the French were about a small nuclear reactor for civilian purposes. Nothing was said at this stage about possible military applications of this technology. But that was Ben-Gurion's ultimate aim: to produce nuclear weapons. He believed that nuclear weapons would strengthen Israel immeasureably, secure its survival, and eliminate the danger of another holocaust. " (p.177-8)

======================

No need to google, Phil.  I have a good book. No doubt there was illegal activity and smuggling of material.

Making a bomb was never a big secret.  Developing the technology for uranium enrichment is the challenge.  That's what people don't understand about the injustice of the Rosenburg convictions.

I thinks it is common knowledge that there were many Jewish scientist involved in nuclear physics.  No doubt many if not most were sympathetic to the infant State of Israel's quest for power, but it was the French that were the first to give them the hands-on experience with nuclear technology.

It is interesting to note that circa 1968 Israel promised not to be the first to introduce nuclear weapons to the ME.  In return Americans removed their inspectors from Dimona in 1969, where Eisenhower helped them develop a nuclear research center in 1955 under the "Atoms for Peace" program.

It was an ambivalent policy that seemed to say "we don't want to build a bomb, but if you do, we don't want to know about it"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_In...

The American Independent Party is a California political party.

...The party was established in 1967 by Bill Shearer and his wife Eileen. In 1968, the American Independent Party nominated former Alabama Governor George C. Wallace as its presidential candidate and retired Air Force General Curtis E. LeMay ...

...Wallace did not represent the American Independent Party in all fifty states. In Connecticut, for instance, he was listed on the ballot as representing the "George Wallace Party." The 1968 presidential ticket received 13.5 percent of the popular vote and 46 electoral votes. The party opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and welfare programs. ...

...The American Independent Party has had ballot status in the state of California since 1968 and is still active there. In the early 1980’s, Bill Shearer led the American Independent Party into the Populist Party. Since 1992, the A.I.P. has been the California affiliate of the national Constitution Party, formerly the U.S. Taxpayers Party. ....

btw,

The first time I heard this trash about Senator Obama was from white female who is a rabid Hillary supporter. She is a Gulf War Veteran and a Teacher. She told me she changed her political party from Republican to Democratic this year. I told her that the Democratic Party in California doesn't approve of or tolerate that type of political rhetoric. The rhetoric coming out of some of the feminist organizations' membership who are backing Hillary is even worst. Many of our members have already resigned from organizations. It's just not been reported in the news. It got really really nasty right before the election. A few of us younger gals (I'm 52) had to politely tell some of the older gals off before they ruined the organizations. The Clintons' divided the LGBT movement in California too. That stuff got really bad.

Thanks Keith Olbermann, for showing the document that HIllary Clinton signed agreeing to the rules of the Democratic National Committee, not to campaign in states that held primaries before February 5th.  Then, Keith showed HIllary saying that it was a choice and that Barack Obama refused that choice.  There's your duplicity, your lying, your lack ot ethics.  Is this what we want?

I liked Obama's response, his laughter and sense of humor and logic.

No, Hillary Clinton won't get any votes in this household. She's no different than Bush or McCain, and those poor benighted souls that think she represents a woman leader, I'm sorry for.  She's dishonest, manipulative, and the kind of leader we are hoping will leave office without starting another war in Iran.

Frankly, she might leave an entirely different story for history were she to resign after Pennsylvania if she is still far behind, and she would be remembered as a leader, someone who supported the party, supported change, and was gracious to the nominee.  That won't happen.  She made that decision a long time ago when she tolerated, excused, and went after the women her husband solicited in Arkansas.  She is no role model I want for my granddaughters.

And she has played the race card numerous times to shore up her white, old lady and old men votes.  The first time was with the photograph of Obama in Kenyan garb, then her reply as to whether or not he was a muslim, and Bill's "fairy tale" quote, his dismissing of Obama's win in South Carolina as a Jesse Jackson win that wouldn't go anywhere, and this latest with Geraldine Ferraro and letting the story grow for two weeks.  Not a woman I'd want to buy a used car from.
