Gov. Dean and the 50-state Strategy in the Nation

Written by: DFA Staff on Mar 1, 2008 11:45 PM EST

Ari Berman has a piece in the upcoming issue of the Nation about Howard Dean, the DNC, the presidential candidates, and the 50-state strategy:

The race for the Democratic nomination is a window into how the candidates view the future of the party, which is being shaped in large part by Dean's efforts. Are Clinton and Obama similarly committed to Dean's fifty-state strategy? How much faith would each, as the Democratic nominee, put in the party's grassroots? In the Internet era, the party is less about elder statesmen sitting in Washington than millions of people across the country organizing locally around issues and candidates. Dean and Obama have understood how the party is changing--and have embraced it. Clinton, thus far, has not.

The Chair is first.  Leadership can produce!

Thank you Howard Dean for moving the Democrats forward with the 50-state strategy.

Newton's First Law of Motion...

states in part:

An object at rest tends to stay at rest  ...

Well, the Democrats were at rest, but a force set it in motion.  Howard has affected the dirction of a now moving Democratic Party...

time, and time again.

Bravo Democrats!  Thank you for showing up, Howard.

If Clinton soldiers on with canvassing and expanding the Party in Indiana and Kentucky and West Virginia, and especially next in Pennsylvania and runs a positive campaign about the future and her role in taking the country back out of this hole Bush dug   ....  no harm done

If she begins to take the low road the super delegate branch of the Party is going to want to pull the plug

Obama can train volunteers from states right across the border and turn around and send them home to good effect

this is only bad for the party if it is a circular firing squad, if they both focus on McCain and the future, win/win

Hillary herself holds the key, because she can fire the team members that go negative.

Morning,

Hi sm, I know how you feel about phone banking.  I, too, have the same discomfort though I've done lots of it.  Mostly people are pretty nice, same with knocking on doors.  But, the introvert that I am, really hates to bother people because I don't like being bothered.  Irony is, I'm pretty nice when people bother me.

Judy for Dean, thanks for the correction on the last thread about Hezzbolah and Hamas.  I've had a respiratory infection, and after I posted last night it occurred to me I said Hezzbolah instead of Hamas.  Not being able to breathe fuddles the brain.

Snow here after 60 and 70 degree weather and the beautiful spring light yesterday. Ah, Colorado.  I think our altitude and being affected by the air currents makes us aware of how changeable weather is.

I am praying, yes, praying that Obama wins the coming contests.  Now as an exCAtholic, I'm not sure how welcome my prayers are, but I so desperately want a change, want to believe in the good will, effort, and ethics of this country again.  If anyone is interested, read John Dean's book, Broken Government, and the details of how the Republicans, and some Democrats have corrupted our system are more than dismayiang.  They are frightening.

Ignoring my own superstitions about jinxes - anyway they were just discussing it on MTP -- if Obama's biggest 'flaw' is 'inexperience' his veep should represent 'experience' -- now who would help him win in a landslide? Not to mention we might have a real country again? Al Gore.

Now we're upping the ante: let's make 1,500,000 calls before polls close on Tuesday.

Russert's performance as a moderator of this week's debate has drawn widespread criticism. Most appalling was his bizarre fixation on Louis Farrakhan.

Russert asked Barack Obama about Louis Farrakhan's praise for the Illinois senator. Obama, who had previously denounced Farrakhan, did so again. Then Russert asked about Farrakhan again. So Obama reiterated his denunciation. Then Russert, (who, I can only assume, was not bothering to listen to Obama's responses) asked about Farrakhan again. So Obama again reiterated his denunciation. Russert, plowing ahead, asked yet another question about Farrakhan, prompting Obama to answer yet again.

Josh Marshall summed up Russert's behavior nicely: "It was a nationwide, televised, MSM version of one of those noxious Obama smear emails."

re: Russert -- I loved Matelin talking about how individually we were all doing just great with the economy -- it was obvious SHE is doing ok with the economy -- that suit and her jewelry were to die for.

On Chris Matthews Sunday show the woman Cynthia? from Georgia said John Lewis waited too late to change is vote to Obama and b/c of it he had a Dem challenger for the first time in memory -- b/c they feel he is out of touch with the voters of his district. She said that others not switching would face the same fate. Quite frankly I find this a little scary -- like the rumors on past threads that superdelegates are being strongarmed to change.

Russert was a frequent guest on Don Imus' radio show and appeared just two days after Imus' comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team that ultimately led to his firing. I would never vote for a Presidential candidate that would not pull the trigger on a missle strike on actionable intelligence that they had a bead on Osama and 80% plus of the country is with me on that, which is why Obama gave the right answer back to McCain.

to expand that to every past student of every madrassas would be a big mistake paine, it should be good enough for a warrant from FISA, as a potential threat

vigilance against threat, action against enemy combatants, but please be wise enough to be lowering that number not increasing it

wisdom is Obama's trump card against either McCain or for the next couple of days, Clinton

Clinton does make a stand in for McCain and if he can't defeat her arguments he willl have the same trouble with McCain

So, I heard all the Obama's trying to claim Hillary's 3AM ad was fear mongering, and that the Obama supporters thought it was terrible.

So, I haven't noticed anything here, now that Obama COPIED Hillary's 3AM ad and changed the ending for himself, where's the outrage? He not only copied her ad, but used the same supposed "fear mongering" he complained of? LOL

The 3am type political ads have been around since 1984. They discussed that this morning on MTP. Not saying anyone copied anyone but the strategy to use these types of ads has been around for awhile now.

Obama used the same type of ad to specifically call out their own message as opposed to hers. I don't see it as copying so much as using a message strategy that has been around for a couple of decades, and to SPECIFICALLY show where they are diametrically in opposition of each other with that strategic message.

Regarding Obama not speaking to Chicago newspapers - this must mean in the past few months as there are many archives on the Internet showing him he discussed it in 2006 when questioned by the Tribune.

He's admitted what he knows - what else does he need to do? Both candidates can be associated with him, so any further discussion from them only takes away from talking about the real issues that are important to today's voter - the economy, health care, Middle East situation, etc.

Interesting Story in NY Times this morning

How Do You Prove You’re a Jew?

One day last fall, a young Israeli woman named Sharon went with her fiancé to the Tel Aviv Rabbinate to register to marry. They are not religious, but there is no civil marriage in Israel. The rabbinate, a government bureaucracy, has a monopoly on tying the knot between Jews. The last thing Sharon expected to be told that morning was that she would have to prove — before a rabbinic court, no less — that she was Jewish. It made as much sense as someone doubting she was Sharon, telling her that the name written in her blue government-issue ID card was irrelevant, asking her to prove that she was she....

Howard is shredding McCain.

"He runs of ethics, but he doesn't seem to have any." Says he doesn't want four more years of George Bush.

Everytime they show that "the sky will open" clip I am reminded how much I don't want a snotty and sarcastic person in the Oval Office. We already have one - how's that working for us?

OH, thank you guys. I know I can count on you for a good laugh.

Actually trying to claim Obama's copy ad was good.

But I will accept your acknowledgement that HIllary's kicked and was good and that's why Obama tried to copy it as best as he could.

Ciao!

Linda we can expect you to come back and mock us more soon. We are not here to make you laugh. Why are you mocking your friends? We are just pointing out that the ad was a rapid response, and that ads like this have been around for many years.

We are told everyone has a right to post here, but do you have the right to come here SPECIFICALLY to be rude and obnoxious to us?

Yes, this blog does need to be fixed. My posts keep appearing at the bottom along with PA's. All the other posts appear above ours. Hard to keep straight. Off for more coffee and a hike with my beasty dog.

Looked fantastic - kept off Hill/Barack and stuck it to McCain - addressed the public financing question well, Wolf got not one point. Addressed the superdelegate question. Was his usual logical, intelligent, don't shove me around with a smile self.

Goodbye.  Clinton is opposed to Dean's hegemony in the Democratic Party, Linda.  However satisfying you may find it, manic dissembling won't alter that fact.

He's Baaaack...

Our straight talking, tough Howard is back on the TV, and raring to go.

He turns questions about the Dems around to strike at McCain. Obama needs him on the ticket, as VP, he will demolish McCain, if he doesn't do it on his own before then.

Howard is the STRENGTH that this ticket needs.

Yes Mary, I read “Dean’s Legacy” a couple days ago.

I'm not going to play the apologist for who I have decided out of the remaining candidates I prefer, Hillary. But I do want to clear up any distortions or painting a scenario through rose colored glasses.

I very much dislike the DLC as most on this list could probably agree with. I was thrilled when Al Gore disassociated himself from them afterhe lost in 2000. I wish Democrats didn't find them as a powerful group they felt the need to align themselvwes with. I truly dislike a group of people trying to claim for a Democrat to win, they need to be more Republican like. I don't like their policies, Privatizing School, Privatizing Social Security, Pro War, Pro supply and demand and Freetrade. Al From and Bruce Reed, the Founders, President and CEO of DLC...and now Harold Ford Jr, the Chair. But we don't need to grandiose some members versus others to show our preferences.

And while everyone wants to make the bad of Bill Clinton, automatic of Hills , but not want to give credit of Hillary's own actions. I'd like wejust deal with realities. If being a member of the DLC automatically should discount a Democratic candidate from being the Democratic nominee, when we are in the real world of politics, then we have a problem. The very last public membership list of the DLC, before the backlash started
of being associated with them, primarily when Obama was getting traction and he received upset in his own Chicago that his name appeared on the DLC's "Rising Stars", they made the list unpublished and promised they would only release the names if the members stated they could. He said he didn't know how he appeared on that list of DLC's rising stars, he "only
filled out an application". ??? But, besides the Clintons, Richardson, Kerry, Edwards, Obama, Dodd, et al ...all being on the membership list, you might be also surprised who is not. You can see the last public published list of 2003 here:
http://web.archive.org/web/2003032709571...

I hate Carville and Begala too. But if we're going to tie those two ?Strategiests? to Hillary, even though (FACT) they don't work on her campaign, surely we should tie those who actively work on Obama's campaign as well, like Rahm Emanuel et al. BTW, as much as I REALLY don't like Schumer, he isn't a member of the DLC...go figure. So, can we tie the bad people supporting Obama to him as well?

So are we going to ignore the fact that Hillary's proposals and policies, trade, economy, environment, etc, have been explicit and more progressiveor even liberal, and her votes actually reflect her positions, like supporting interest caps (obama didn't), supporting no weakening of trade policies (obama didn't), voting against the (cheney) energily Bill (obama
didn't). And ignore, out of choice, that even the top people involved in the Bill Clinton admin said many times she was no fan of Bill' s Free Trade agreement. Because it's easier on our conscience? I can't help and we all will have to live with the eventual of this election.

But one more note. Besides everyone writes articles to favor their preferred candidate, as we know, this Nation (who endorsed Obama) is no exception.

Hillary Clinton signed a pledge long ago with Howard Dean to continue the 50 State strategy.

I will let you all digest the facts or informaiton you want to make your decisions.

Ciao!

Thanks for that clarification, Linda. It helps me understand where you are coming from, as I've been quite puzzled the last couple of months.

I'm off to a double feature matinee. Have a great day everyone!

I can't find anything that says Rahm is supporting Barack. What have you found Linda.

Anni I was wondering about that too - I don't think that Rahm has been too vocal about his support for Obama.

I'd be interested to see any proof of that when I get back later tonight.

I too, can not say it often enough....THANK YOU HOWARD DEAN!!!!!!  As to who who actually supports the 50 State Strategy?  It is Obama of course.  Hillary represents the old "top Down" dictatoral Democrats.  Obama knows the power of the grassroots to make actual change.  It is the grassroots that the Clintonistas and the DLCers fear because they are beginning to relpace the old guard which the Clintons represent and they fear losing their power.  Howard Dean understood the power of the grassroots from the very beginning and that is why he was and is so feared by the power brokers in Washington.  Once more, THANK YOU HOWARD DEAN for changing the Party and getting progressives a voice.
