A Great Speech by Jimmy Carter
One of my favorite authors is Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. In his book The Great Shark Hunt, Dr. Thompson writes about Gov. Jimmy Carter's "Law Day" address at the University of Georgia on May 4, 1974. It is a pretty remarkable address where Gov. Carter talks about the law, compassion, and some of his influences:
My own interest in the criminal justice system is very deep and heartfelt. Not having studied law, I've had to learn the hard way. I read a lot and listen a lot. One of the sources for my understanding about the proper application of criminal justice and the system of equity is from reading Reinhold Niebuhr, one of his books that Bill Gunter gave me quite a number of years ago. The other source of my understanding about what's right and wrong in this society is from a friend of mine, a poet named Bob Dylan. After listening to his records about "The Ballad of Hattie Carol" and "Like a Rolling Stone" and "The Times, They Are a-Changing," I've learned to appreciate the dynamism of change in a modern society.
I grew up as a landowner's son. But I don't think I ever realized the proper interrelationship between the landowner and those who worked on a farm until I heard Dylan's record, "I Ain't Gonna Work on Maggie's Farm No More." So I come here speaking to you today about your subject with a base for my information founded on Reinhold Niebuhr and Bob Dylan.
It is a 9 page speech, but well worth the read.
Thanks.
Danny

the only time being on the server that throws your post up is good is when you are in a horse race
Phil thanks for taking the time to explain what you meant on the last thread.
I, for one, would LOVE to have NEW input from lurkers, especially from voters in states where primaries and caucuses have not yet occurred.
USS Cole is on the way to the Lebanon border, and the repugs are already asking if Americans want Obama to be the one to talk to Assad.
Is another scare or war on the agenda to influence the election?
Better get a few Generals for VP. Remember NH '04, people scare easily, unfortunately.
What bad banking news means to you
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Bad news about the banking industry may have you wondering about the safety of your hard earned cash at your own bank.
In the past year there have been four bank failures.
And the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp and banking industry experts foresee many bank failures down the road.
"Regulators are bracing for 100-200 bank failures over the next 12-24 months," says Jaret Seiberg, an analyst with the financial services firm, the Stanford Group.

This post is for Denise.. I just wanted to let you know I did see your posts today in response to my post about your answer to Seashell. I, also, saw that you & she seemed to be ok with what was worked out between you.
I don't know if I have ever directly responded to you before or vice versa, but hopefully, you understand that I read that post & actually had to bring it forward a couple threads in order to answer, so I definitely felt a lot about the manner in which it was written. But that's over.
Obama is not my guy, but I don't like to see him being ridiculed over & over when they use his middle name simply to try & bring him down. My concern about him, is he a "doer". We've had enough of delegaters to last us forever. I want someone who knows enough & doesn't have to totally rely on someone else.
Anyway, best to you, Denise
well the snow storm of the day has started, just in time for feeding
I have a pre-convention meeting tonight to figure out the easiest way to facillitate the Edwards re-alignment.

jao wight - What a great post. You were very honest in saying Obama is not your guy rather than completely tearing him apart. You're a class act.
Best to you too, jao!
Sea and I have met in person and I have nothing personal against her. She is a sweet woman that rightfully has alot of questions.
I was a Gore supporter with hopes of him entering the race, but since he did not I am supporting Obama and have for quite some time. No bandwagon for me - I sent him money way back when DFA supported him, as well as when he was running for Illinois state senate representing the south side of Chicago, my hometown.
I appreciate your comments!

William J. Haynes, the Pentagon's chief legal officer and overseer of Guantanamo's Military Commissions, is stepping down, amid mounting controversy over the tribunal process, so he can "return to private life," the Department of Defense announced late on Monday. Haynes' resignation comes exactly two weeks after landmark charges were brought against six "high-value" Guantanamo detainees.
Whether Obama or Clinton is the nominee, I truly believe Jim Webb is the best VP candidate.
He can and would stick it in the ear of "War-monger McCain".
James Earl Carter - perhaps a good lesson on why Hillary Rodham Clinton would not be a successful or well-liked President. His "my way or the highway" approach was only trumped by Clinton's similar "take it or leave it attitude" on health care.
Post White House - Carter is undoubtedly an incredibly good former President - particularly in terms of standing up to the rotten current pResident.
Phil....
Zinni is good, haven't heard much from him lately. I actually would prefer Howard for strength, but a lot of people gravitate toward the military when afraid.

Look like big pharma needs a boost in profits.
May 25th in OR indeed will not matter--i.e., primary; however the Obama portal already has groups set up.
Stop playing the victim role, folks; when it's impossible to change anything.
All states have important federal & state downticket races; as well as municipal, county, & state conventions.
TX & OH will be the deciding factor on the 4th (VT & RI are psychological wins & losses, as was Maine).
It's a DNC caucus bylaws & rules committee issue.
Nothing will change during this '08 cycle--accept it.
None of you are on it, so incessantly "emoting" is only all the more irritating & senseless.
In the interim?
*Research*.
Self-educate.
I only hope that OH & TX women aren't dumb enough to fall for the "misty-eyed" treatment.
Hillary's never broken an honest sweat a day of her life.
Nor does her "ending welfare as we know it" misogynistic & racist bullshit back anything up.
...or *unpaid* family medical leave.
It's useless.
This year's flu shot missing new strains of virus

Canadians heading out to get their annual flu shot may want to know that the strains of the influenza aiming for North America appear to be drifting and mutating, raising questions about how much protection this year's flu vaccine will offer.

don't look for such stories in the U.S. press. Health care is profit issue here.
The House Human Resources Committee passed House Study Bill 630 which establishes an Emergency Mental Health Crisis Services System. The system is established within the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Specifically, the system will set standards for accrediting or approving emergency mental health crisis services providers, identify geographic regions for organizing the system, coordinate the services with other providers and law enforcement, identify basic services to be provided, and operational requirements for accreditation or approval of providers.
Currently, all Iowans do not have access to emergency mental health crisis services. For those that do, the services are very limited in scope and limited in eligibility. The service system is intended to be a statewide system, available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week for all Iowans.
The system will provide an array of time-limited services to reduce escalation of events to crises, the immediate distress of persons in crisis, the risk of individuals doing harm to themselves or others, and to promote independence for those who require ongoing mental health services.
In addition to House Study Bill 630, the Health and Human Services Budget subcommittee is examining appropriate funding to start the implementation of the statewide program.

I'll lay a little side bet with you.
If Obama sweeps next week, and Hillary bows out and the delegate total for Obama gets beyond 2025, Florida and Michigan will both be seated.
and my best guess is Oregon is the State that puts him over
but I'd be willing to put which state puts Obama over 2025 in a pool and everybody make their best guess
who says you have to be a basketball fan to fill in a bracket and have a little fun with March Madness
the rule that makes that possible is the rule that says a majority of delegates at the National Convention can do anything they want if they take the vote to do it
Hey you got off easy mainefem :)
Take the bet, I would.
U.S. expresses concern about vaccine as flu cases up
Fri Feb 8, 2008 5:28pm EST
By Will Dunham
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The influenza vaccine given to Americans may not protect as well as expected, U.S. health officials said on Friday as the number of flu cases increased nationwide.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said slightly more than half of the influenza virus strains reported to its surveillance system are not good matches against the strains included in this flu season's vaccine...

Panel Advises Flu Shots for Children Up to Age 18

It is of more than a passing interest to Iowa delegates since we had to have special dispensention to jump the calendar ourselves, and I don't have a vote in it but have been in the loop of direct conversations with people that do make those decisions and I would be guilty of insider trading if I did not disclose that before I took your money in a bet.
Florida and Michigan delegates better have their plane tickets bought unless they provide the winning margin for Hillary who is behind without them, and if they don't matter at all either way will be seated, bet on it.
The recommendation, which is voluntary, was made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice, which advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The C.D.C. and its parent, the Department of Health and Human Services, generally follow the advice of the committee, which is composed of vaccine experts from academia and the private sector.

she might have gotten a rush from that cool $100,000 she made on insider information on beef futures.
She makes the money, and Martha Stewart becomes the scapegoat.
What bet...that OR will be in play on May 25?
O.K. I don't normally gamble.
Obama would be wise to trot out the academics on his NY Feminists for Peace & Barack Obama! list.
They can debunk Hillary's pro-woman propaganda in no time flat.
Specifically: Drs. Linda P. Gordon, Alice Kessler-Harris (and Barbara Ehrenreich).
Graduating from Wellesley does not imply that Hillary internalized or learned squat while attending.
TX women (esp. of color) have suffered tremendously from "welfare deform."
See HR4 fmi.
Parenting is no longer a "countable work activity."
'Ya can't have it both ways.
Subjugation of women is subjugation of women.
The DLC Clintonistas threw 'em under the bus; and into the ditch of poverty.
They don't have the luxury of being "misty-eyed" over trivial bullshit.
Bring up her lofty tenure on Wal-Mart's Board of Directors; and make her defend it!
It's what they do for a living, BTW--I'm sure they could bring their research data to the masses, vs. theoretical feminist jargon.
That's why Hillary attracts women who earn little/less educated--they don't have time or money to attend college/read collegiate level texts.
Family medical leave act sounds great, until you remind them that it's UNPAID labor--as is freebie childcare, and elder care.
Few people in this country know diddly squat about the history of women of color (as well as the intersections of sex, race, and class).
Bring on the academics...it's almost the obligatory "Women's History Month," so it's safe to read books written by, for, and about women.
Something new and different....
Mary vb & Denise Thanks for your posts. appreciate it very much.

Former S.F. Supervisor Matt Gonzalez to run with Nader

The consumer activist introduced Gonzalez as his vice-presidential candidate at a news conference in Washington, D.C.

OR for Obama already has a portal; & it looks to be busy.
Stop whining, about what cannot be changed, people.
IMO, FLA & MI delegates should sit out the '08 convention 100%.
Not one delegate seated. It isn't fair to all the other states, who abided by the rules.
Tough love approach. Let 'em get pissed.
However, I'm certainly not on the credentials committee.
Re: May 25th & OR's primary--go sign up on the Obama portal (link upthread).
Take it up w/the DNC's caucus rules & bylaws committee, etc.
Only one candidate will be on the OR primary ballot by May 25th.
Whining about it won't help.
Nor will Nadar or McKinney go anywhere in '08 (other than create chaos).
Neither can fundraise, garner critical mass, votes, ballot access, & infrastructure, etc.
Good afternoon, all. Positively balmy here in No. Cal today:)

Dow GE corn contaminates 53,000 acres: The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food & Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency have issued a press release warning that a genetically engineered corn seed has been contaminating Iowa cornfields since 2006. The DowAgroSciences seed, a variety known as Event 32, was illegally sold under the labels Herculex RW and Herculex EXTRA. Dow claims that pollen from stalks of the unapproved GE variant inadvertently "landed on a patch of approved stalks." The Des Moines Register says the seeds were "genetically engineered to make the plants toxic to insect pests." The USDA describes Event 32 an "unregistered pesticide product" but claims it poses no harm to plants or humans and, furthermore, "poses no plant pest...concerns." The Register called the disclosure "the latest in a series of incidents in which unapproved biotech varieties of corn and rice have made their way into seed or grain supplies," beginning in 2000, when GE StarLink corn wound up in taco shells and other commercial food products, and was later found in corn exported by USAID to Bolivia. Greg Jaffe of the Center for Science in the Public Interest cited this as evidence that the biotech industry still "isn't policing itself adequately."
Oh, goody goody, another lawsuit....or at least on that is being heard on appeal. Just what we need. Florida can not leave well enough alone.
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1864
"Democrats may be focused on the upcoming Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries to get a better idea of who their presidential nominee may be.
But a federal appeals court in Atlanta is giving them one more reason to keep at least a wandering eye on Florida.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has agreed to hear oral arguments from a Tampa man seeking to have Florida's Jan. 29 Democratic presidential preference primary votes count.
The decision is no indication of how the court views the merits of the lawsuit. But many suits are rejected on written pleadings alone, which was the case when the suit was filed in the lower court."
Tell FDA to ban Lindane
EPA has stopped the use of the pesticide lindane in agriculture, calling it "one of the most toxic, persistent, bioaccumulative pesticides ever registered." Yet the Food and Drug Administration continues to allow lindane use in shampoos and lotions used on children. Join me and tell FDA's Commissioner that it is time his agency caught up with the rest of the world and banned this dangerous pesticide.
And a great article about Dean and his legacy at the Nation.

Join us in March for Take Back America
Hi all!
As we continue to gear up for the Netroots Nation convention in Austin this July, I wanted to make sure everyone knew about another conference happening in March. The Campaign for America's Future, one of our long-standing institutional progressive allies in Washington, is hosting its annual Take Back America conference of progressive leaders, thinkers, bloggers and organizers March 17-19. I'm going, and if you're able to, I hope you can join me.

This year's speakers, panels and workshops will center on five critical areas where change is urgently needed: "Out of Iraq to Real Security," "Green Jobs for a Sustainable Energy Future," "Quality, Affordable Health Care for All," "The New Social Justice Agenda" and "Economic Strategy for America in the Global Economy."
MoveOn.org's Eli Pariser, leaders like Van Jones, thinkers like Jacob Hacker and experts like Naomi Klein, Leo Gerard and Andrea Batista-Schlesinger will be there. And the America's Future Lifetime
Leadership Award will be given to one of our movement's greatest advocates for social justice, Norman Lear.

Before I see you in Austin this July, I hope I'll see you in DC on March 17.
