Shutting the Door on Superdelegates Deciding the Nomination
(Cross-posted in part at DailyKos)
Few people knew what to expect when we launched DFA's Voters Decide campaign. We called on super-delegates to confirm the will of the voters, instead of crowning a different winner. Never before had anyone forced the media spotlight to focus on the power of this group of less than 800 party insiders.
And, we were shocked by the results. In only 10 days:
60,000+ Signatures on our Voters Decide petition
Full Page ad in USA Today with MoveOn
Speaker Pelosi, Sen. McCaskill and other leading Democrats came out in support
On Monday, we took our message to the Democratic leadership with deliveries to Sen. Clinton, Sen. Obama, Majority Leader Reid, Speaker Pelosi, and DNC Chair Gov Dean. Read their stories below.
And, yesterday, over 3,600 DFA members across the country delivered Voters Decide petitions to super-delegates in their communities. Their stories are below:
Kathy in Tuscson, AZ:
I dropped the signatures at Gabrielle Gifford's office. Someone had beat me to it so she had two copies there. Her office manager asked if there was a way to get the addresses of the people in Tucson who signed it who were in her district, (8th). I said that I would ask you. Gabriel likes to personally respond to her constituents. ..
finally, Joni did say that it is Ms Gifford's intention to follow what the people want.
More below the fold:
I delivered the superdelegate petition to Connecticut Congressman Joe Courtney's office in Enfield, CT this morning. I handed it to John Hollay who is the deputy district director for Congressman Courtney. John assured me that he will personally hand the petition to Congressman Courtney when he returns to the district this weekend. John mentioned that he recognized many of the people who signed the petition. He also assured me that Congressman Courtney agrees fully with our position and that is why he has not endorsed a presidential candidate.
Hope everyone else's delivery went as well as mine.
Marguerite in Houston, TX
I was happy to deliver the Petition today to the offices of two Superdelegates: U.S. Rep. Al Green (where it was enthusiastically received!) and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee... Thank you for giving me the opportunity to get involved.Marilyn in Stuart, FL:
3 of us delivered the petition to Congressman Mahoney's office inHow was your experience?
Stuart, Florida. We were met by a less than friendly liaison person
who told us that the senior office person was busy and might see us
later. We stood our ground and the very pleasant senior woman
quickly emerged, took the petition and said that she would see that
Rep. Mahoney would get it that afternoon. She would scan it and send
it.
Cooling Trend Puts Global Warming Theory in Doubt
Michael Asher
Daily Tech
February 26, 2008
Above: Snowstorm in south Lebanon January 30, 2008. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile — the list goes on and on.
Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile — the list goes on and on.
No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA’s GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.
A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C — a value large enough to wipe out nearly all the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year’s time. For all four sources, it’s the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.
Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn’t itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.
Let’s hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans — and most of the crops and animals we depend on — prefer a temperature closer to 70.
Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.
Gas May Reach $4 a Gallon by Spring
Jad Mouawad
International Herald Tribune
February 27, 2008
High energy prices that were once easily absorbed by consumers are now more likely to act as a drag on household budgets, leaving people with less money to spend elsewhere.
Gasoline prices, which for months lagged the big run-up in the price of oil, are suddenly rising quickly, with some experts fearing they could hit $4 a gallon by spring. Diesel is hitting new records daily and oil closed at an all-time high on Tuesday of $100.88 a barrel.
The increases could not come at a worse time for the economy. With growth slowing, high energy prices that were once easily absorbed by consumers are now more likely to act as a drag on household budgets, leaving people with less money to spend elsewhere. These costs could exacerbate the nation’s economic woes, piling a fresh energy shock on top of the turmoil in credit and housing.
“The effect of high oil prices today could be the difference between having a recession and not having a recession,” said Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard University economist.
The depth of the nation’s economic problems became clearer Tuesday with the release of figures showing that prices at the producer level rose 1 percent in January, driven in large measure by energy costs. Compared with a year ago, prices were up 7.4 percent, the worst producer price inflation in the United States since 1981.

Bernanke Acknowleges Crumbling Economy

Helicopter Ben obliquely acknowledges inflation causing “slower growth,” that is to say the housing sector and jobs market are down the tubes.
WASHINGTON (CNNMoney.com) — The economy faces the prospect of slower growth, but increasing concerns over inflation could complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to stimulate the economy, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers Wednesday.
The central bank chief, in testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, said that the housing sector and jobs market could deteriorate further. He also warned that lending could be squeezed by tighter credit conditions.
“[I]t is important to recognize that downside risks to growth remain,” Bernanke said. The Fed “will act in a timely manner as needed to support growth.”
The markets turned higher Wednesday on Bernanke’s testimony, as investors read signals that the Fed was prepared to continue cutting rates if necessary to stimulate the economy.
In fact, the growing consensus is that the Fed will cut interest rates by another half a percentage point when policymakers meet again on March 18.

House Speaker: Lazy Missourians could learn from Mexicans
RUDI KELLER
Southeast Missourian
February 22, 2008
A lot of lazy Missourians, including many in Southeast Missouri, could benefit from adopting the work ethic of Mexican immigrants, House Speaker Rod Jetton said Thursday.
Jetton, speaking to publishers, editors and reporters at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion, made an example of Wayne County residents in his 156th Missouri House District. In 2004, an employer who considered moving to Wayne County, which had one of the highest unemployment rates in the state at the time, was able to attract only three applicants, Jetton said. The jobs weren’t great — the pay was about $8 an hour — but the chance to get off government assistance should have been attractive, he said.
“We have a shortage of people who want to go out and bust their tails and do the jobs,” Jetton said.
Jetton made his remarks when asked about his statement made to Republicans in Springfield, Mo., that he would like to “trade some of our people for some of the Mexicans who work so hard.”
He didn’t back away from that remark. “If we can find a way to trade them, I would trade them in a heartbeat,” Jetton said.

"a tour de force":
Obama is a worthwhile risk
By Leonard Fein
Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 2:45 PM EST
Of course there are risks; there always are.
...
Against those, it should be sufficient to quote Rep. Barney Frank, himself a supporter of Hillary Clinton, who cites the support Obama enjoys from the Jewish community of his home city, Chicago, as evidence that the accusations against Obama are all foam, no beer.By now it is stunningly obvious that Obama brings prodigious talents to the task. More even than his brilliance as a speaker, the improbable
campaign he has until now so successfully waged is evidence of that.
From its fundraising effort to its state-by-state organization, the Obama campaign has combined meticulous management with bold imagination.
It is hardly, as one pundit called it this week, “a juggernaut“ - an inexorable force that crushes all in its path - but it is a tour de force.

Obama is a worthwhile risk
By Leonard Fein
...
former, re: If he would see progressive ENOUGH (in his view) Obama/Clinton (or Gore 7 years ago) agenda, he would not enter the race either “a year ago” or “at-the-last minute”.
yeah, right! so what's 'progressive' about his actions? they DO speak louder than his words:
last time around he held an online poll to determine support - said he wouldn't get into the race if the 'people' felt the dem and repub nominees represented their interests. the result was a large majority of respondees asked him NOT to enter the race, yet he ignored his own poll results and initial promise and threw his hat into the ring anyway.
next he said there is NO difference between democrats and republicans - well, excuse me, but as much as I think Kerry would have been a poor leader, he sure as he!! wouldn't have done the damage GWB has!
next he justified the huge donations he was receiving from republican bundlers who wanted to keep his campaign going to siphon off votes from Kerry - it didn't do too much damage in 2004, but it certainly wasn't for his lack of trying!
next he said he would vote for Bush over Kerry - that it would be good for the country because it would bring about change. yeah we got change all right - how do you feel about it now, Ralph. oh, that's right - you still feel that way.
any respect I had for this man is long gone - he betrayed the best interest of his country in the best interest of his ego.
Daniel, if you have so little respect for everyone here, why do you come here? is it just to taunt and insult us? is there a purpose for you to continue to spend time with we 'sheep' as you call us? is it because DFA has so far ignored your trollish behaviour? if so, I think they may be catching on!
what is YOUR purpose, Daniel? and are you helping or hurting your 'cause'?

The piece's author (Leonard Fein) meant risk in a positive way for Obama. If you read the article, that will ferret out for you to see -- that the risk is the WE, that we have to help maintain the change after the inauguration (day in, day out), when there's less excitement, than the time and heat of a election.

Two of the Kennedys visit Houston to back Obama

The widow and son of Robert F. Kennedy urged volunteers today at the Obama campaign office near downtown Houston to continue working hard to win votes for their candidate.
...
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local 770 and the Transport Workers Union, Local 556 also endorsed Obama.
Christina Chavez, granddaughter of the late Cesar Chavez, who helped form what would become the United Farm Workers union to fight for better conditions for migrant agricultural laborers, said she supports Obama.
His ability to inspire people to get involved in the issues reminded her of her grandfather, she said.

Jews Now Drawn Deeper Into Racial Politics
As Obama surges, new round of e-mails raises specter of Farrakhan, Jackson, Sharpton.
...Generational Divide On Race
There is a huge generational divide in the Jewish community, as there is in the public at large.
Younger Jews, who are the strongest backers of Obama, are mostly “oblivious” to the race issue, or regard Obama’s race as a plus, said a leading Jewish Democratic operative; resistance to Obama because of his race may be “more of an issue for some older Jewish voters.”
For those older Jews, the Obama candidacy may raise a disturbing array of red flags, including black anti-Semitism, the hostility of some African-American leaders to the pro-Israel cause and connections to outright anti-Semites like Farrakhan.
Kean University political scientist Gilbert Kahn said a “latent racism” in the Jewish community will be a significant factor in shaping the Jewish vote in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee — a racism shaped by insecurity...
From Newsweek regarding last night's debate talking about Hill - tee, hee, on the last sentence...
"But no sooner had she won the first two rounds than she took time out to whine about the referees and the official scorers, asking: 'how come I get all the first questions and Ali-Obama over here gets all the easy ones?' She cited "Saturday Night Live," that noted font of media criticism, for the proposition that all any reporter ever asked Obama was whether he wanted "another pillow." This was not the kind of red flag you want to wave at the bull-shaped and bull-minded Tim Russert".

so much for McCain being respectful - he's turned into quite the comedian on the stump, making fun of Obama and getting great laughs from the crowd. that is just fine by me. go ahead, folks, laugh at the dem candidate, make fun of him and of us and please, please, don't take us all too seriiously, 'kay? yes, laugh while you can - McCain's not-so-lobbyist-proof past is creeping up on him as we speak - and right behind that is Obama and Friends...

Rooney,
While it may be true that what you post may not be copyrighted, it's been quite clearly stated by many who blog here that NO ONE READS IT if the post is too long.
As Karen states, if you post a couple of subject lines from the article, and the hosting link, that is quite sufficient for any of us to make up our mind as to whether or not we want to read further.
You are right - you are not the only one violating this common courtesy. And you should not be singled out for it. Many long time bloggers here violate this policy.
But our new communications director has asked you kindly, as I'm sure he will continue to ask others kindly, to please be more aware and courteous as to the length of their posts.

I think Judy has it just about right with her overnight links, they are all worth a click if you have time, and if you don't she provides the kernal that conveys the idea.
The simplest solution is to always use an excerpt and a link, never content in its entirety. That will pretty much always constitute fair use, and will always be appreciated by the content creator.
You are right - you are not the only one violating this common courtesy. And you should not be singled out for it. Many long time bloggers here violate this policy.
Hopefully they will read this thread. But if they don't, or disregard it, I've copied Danny's posts and bookmaked the article about it and will repost them as necessary.

This week, George W. Bush and the Republican Party are pulling out all the stops to pressure Democratic members of the House of Representatives to vote against the interests of their constituents to approve a conference version of the fully-loaded FISA Amendments Act. The version of the FISA Amendments Act that they’re going to try to push through the House of Representatives this week
- allows government agents to search your home or office without a search warrant
- allows the Bush White House to coordinate nationwide electronic spying programs against American citizens, listening to our phone calls, reading our emails, and watching us wherever we go on the Internet
- gives retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that broke the law and violated customer privacy agreements by helping the Bush Administration to illegally spy against Americans.
A Democrat in Congress would have to be a genuine idiot to vote for this kind of law. Unfortunately, there are some congressional Democrats just that stupid. These are the House Democrats who voted last summer for the Protect America Act, the predecessor of the FISA Amendments Act.
This copyright discussion is re-educating me. And, I can see I'm one of the abusers at times without even realizing it. Setting aside the legalities, the blog comments are an easier read with links.
It's Also the Congress, Stupid by: Populista, Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 22:08:21 PM CST
...But the point of this isn't just to promote Obama. It is to promote a progressive congress that Obama will need to make real change happen.
One of those candidates who will make that progressive congress is Gilda Reed. There is a 24-Hour Online Fundraiser going on for her right now. Check out the latest one and donate.
Some of my other favorite candidates are Barry Walsh, Heather Ryan, Ed Fallon, Ashwin Madia and Larry Lessig, just to name a few. So if you are for Obama, consider getting involved in a congressional race and help give him the congress he needs. If your for Clinton do the same. Can't get exited about the presidential candidates? Get exited about a congressional candidate!
If you care about achieving a better world then please, please get involved with a congressional candidate. Could be a House candidate or a Senate candidate. Doesn't matter. But get involved and let's go change the world
Thanks everyone! Off for a bit....
Well, I appreciate the discussion about links and citing only portions of articles. However, there are some things which disappear from the web, so sometimes I copy a whole document to Hannah where I can be sure it won't get lost. The military, in particular, puts out reports and then wishes it hadn't and scrubs them from its sites.
Anyway, I'm feeling really heart-sick at the moment after having discovered that the Stephens Group gang in Arkansas isn't the only "private" financial entity that manages to manipulate the economy without much oversight. The latest group I've run across are the Bass brothers from Texas who run private equity funds that return investors between 25% and 30% a year by buying up smallish enterprises and, I guess, bundling the assets. What bothers me isn't that they prey on each other; it's that they then use their ill-gotten gains to buy themselves accolades from universities and museums, etc. The Basses have endowed a chair at Harvard and a fellow who teaches "ethics" is the first to hold it. This guy teaches mega classes for hundreds of students each year and presents them with such questions as "if you're driving a trolley and the brakes give out, do you run into the five people straight ahead on the track or take a siding to run over just one"? As if derailing the trolley weren't an option.
You can see a video here
http://athome.harvard.edu/programs/jmr/
Maybe I'm just overly sentitive or had some bad chicken for lunch. But, frankly, I couldn't watch the whole thing.
Maybe the problem is that it follows that movie "Redacted" where the soldier who raped a young woman, killed her and her sister and father and set the bodies afire, protested to his interrogators that it was OK to shoot and bomb them but not to f*** them.
On the other hand, my daughter-in-law just revealed that she's on the ballot for supervisor of the check-list in her town. Two people running for two slots so she'll probably get it. "Me, who hates politics!" she says. I told her it's not politics, it's civics.
So, that's a bit of balm.
Unless you own it, Karen--always attribute (and check the portal and article for their specific instructions).
Bloggers tend to be rabid with cut-n-paste (esp. if they're obsessed about "hits" on their own blogs).
NOT a wise idear.
I honestly hope to see a few horrendous lawsuits.
One blogger I know (although I've freakin' raged at her on numerous occasions) posts graphics as "found on Google images" as a citation. Google does post clearly their TOS & acceptable use policy. *g*
I hope she loses everything she's got (which isn't much).
She's out for "hits," and could care less about stealing someone else's intellectual property. Flagrant about it, too.
As an academic, I do have a Creative Commons license; and would sue at the drop of a hat.
Nobody online can say "I never knew."
Bullshit.
Google it.
So why do I think this stuff is suspect?
http://geneticsandsociety.org/article.php?id=3415
Well, since some of Bush Two's financial backers have an interest in an outfit that's into growing organs through some methodology than stem cells, one might suspect that his firm opposition to research support for stem cell lines is perhaps not entirely prompted by a faith-based commitment to the sanctity of the life of the fertilized egg.
Given how much Bush Two seems to get wrong, I've always been impressed by his detailed information on the subject of stem cells.
While I don't think that medical or research decisions should be made on the basis of theological considerations, I want them made on the basis of promoting the financial investments of friends even less.
New thread ;-)

Regardless of what any other African American people may be doing, the idea of Obama being an anti-Semite is totally unfounded and ludicrous. Obama is a rational and logical individual who will try to uphold the human rights of both the Jews and the Muslims. There is no racial hatred or prejudice in Obama's heart, and Jewish voters will not buy into any attempt to portray it as otherwise.
