DFA in the Des Moines Register

Written by: DFA Staff on Feb 24, 2008 4:45 PM EST

In column about the Fallon/Boswell Congressional race in Iowa, DFA gets a mention:

Fallon is an unconventional politician and Democrat. He's raised chickens in his former Des Moines neighborhood, lived in poverty and rides his bicycle in mid-winter. He calls Boswell a "Bush Democrat," which has become the new smear for establishment Democrats who voted for the war, among other things. The liberal group, Democracy for America, calls Boswell that, too. It endorsed insurgent Donna Edwards in a Maryland congressional primary and she scored a big upset victory. Now it backs Fallon, calling him "a true progressive," and writing, "He has a record of beating out-of-touch Democrats in Iowa ... When the conservative party establishment tried to primary Ed out of the state Legislature, Ed won again with 68 percent of the vote."

The group criticizes Boswell's votes for the Iraq war, the No Child Left Behind law and tax breaks for oil and gas companies. It says he accepts money from lobbyists.

Susan,

Would if I could, but everything looks fine to me.  I'm on a Mac and have opened the post in three different browsers (Safari, Firefox, and IE) and the post looks good in each.  Thanks.

From political wire:

Clinton's Plan
Though there is still a raging debate among Sen. Hillary Clinton's advisers about how to campaign prior to the March 4 primaries, The Politico outlines Clinton's "5 point plan" for the next week:

1) Run appealing, positive ads.
2) Hold events every day that will drive positive news coverage.
3) Keep the message clear and personal, not wonky.
4) Aim for women, who made her the upset winner of the New Hampshire primary.
5) Mix criticism of Obama with positive conversation about herself.

Just passin' through on the way to PillowLand ... REALLY nice to see Roald here again and hope he comes back more often in spite of the jumpy posts ... so Nader is running yet again (sigh) ... .

*******
Phil ... I look forward to *seeing* you in your early ams again, although mine will generally not be as early as they used to be.

Anni & cC: thanks for the kind words.

And cC, while I have seen neither *Juno* nor the Romanian film described in my links, reports and critiques from those whom I respect who have seen it find the Romanian film to be the more thoughtful of the two. It's probably too strong for the Academy to stomach.

Guess I'll have to check both out for myself.

Pleasant dreams to all.

Pregnant Pause: 4 months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
On a rock with Romanian director Cristian Mungiu
By SCOTT FOUNDAS
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 7:00 pm

The title of Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, also known as the acclaimed Romanian drama that didn't get nominated for this year's foreign-language Oscar, refers to the length of the pregnancy that a college student named Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) seeks to terminate in a midsize Romanian town circa 1987, when Nicolae Ceausescu is still in power and abortions are highly illegal.

Romanian abortion film wins top Cannes prize

A devastating Romanian film on back alley abortion and daily despair in the communist era has won the Cannes film festival's top award, the Palme d'Or.

The film, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, by director Cristian Mungiu was handed the coveted prize at a glittering red-carpet ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the world's paramount film festival.

"It looks a little bit to me like [a] fairytale," a softly spoken Mungui said, adding the triumph showed "you don't necessarily need big budgets and big stars to make stories."

The film, titled after the age of the aborted foetus in the movie, stunned hardened festival veterans and was a favourite for the prize among the 22 films in the competition.

Film industry bible Variety called the film "a revelation".

My home town will be emptied out because our girls advanced. That has traditionally meant our worst snow storm of the year, when they all head to Des Moines. Best team we have had for years. lucky we have a good radio station with a good play by play voice. one of the most fun times I had with Tom Vilsack was when I got him over to the broadcast table when he visited our town and he did live radio color commentary to a game between two unbeaten teams

I was just reflecting on how tame an Obama rally is compared to fans after a big upset.did you see Oklahoma State after they beat Kansas?

looks like finally we are cranking it up a notch with Obama, about time we put politics on the same level as sports

JudyforDean, I've not heard about the Romanian film but it sounds interesting. Will check it out. Looking forward to your news from across the pond.

Danny, the format looks the same as it has for months now...too much blue margin on either side of the posting area. Waste of screen real estate.

Pelosi: Don't overrule the voters

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- who may be the most super delegate of all as chair of the Democratic national convention in Denver -- gave an interview with Bloomberg TV's Al Hunt in which she laid down the law for super delegates:

Don't veto the people's choice.

"I think there is a concern when the public speaks and there is a counter-decision made to that," she said, adding quickly, "I don't think that will happen."

She said the governors, lawmakers, DNC members and others picked as super delegates are chosen through a grassroots process and are accountable to the party's voters.

"I do think that they have a respect -- it's not just following the returns, it's also having a respect for what has been said by the people," Pelosi said. "It would be a problem for the party if the verdict would be something different than the public has decided."

That message will be music to the ears of Barack Obama, who's building a lead in pledged delegates and is urging the super delegates to follow the voters. ......"-----

More from Pelosi:

Pelosi had one more stunner in the interview: She said the Florida and Michigan delegates should not be seated if those delegates would decide the nomination.

"Well, I don't think that any states that operated outside the rules of the party can be dispositive of who the nominee is. That is to say they can't make the difference because then we would have no rules," she said.

Pelosi added, "But I do think that the best outcome for us is if one of the candidates pulls ahead and this issue is disposed of long before we get to the convention. We certainly don't want to ignore Florida and Michigan, but we can't ignore the rules which everyone else played by."---

Having listened to Phil, puddle and others on this topic, have to say I agree with Nancy Pelosi on this one...100%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Biden said the same thing this morning. Obama just needs to win Texas and Ohio to end this. That is why Hillary sounds so desperate today.
Oops, I was left behind chatting with myself.  :-)
Sea, and you've consistently said that you would vote for the Dem nominee. I didn't understand that swipe at you."
cC, I didn't take it as a swipe.  This blog has toughened me up.  LOL  My ego isn't that fragile and it's really hard to insult me.  Sometimes I snap back, mostly I don't,  and then I go dancing.   They didn't mean it as a swipe....I don't think.  LOL  I heard a great quote years ago.."We have to learn to NOT take things personally.  We have to give up our PERSONAL point of view."  Easier said than done.  I have lots of opinions but rarely take them seriously enuf to interfer with my well-being.
Hillary's clip is very amusing and I'm laughing.  She said what many of us are thinking and good for her for pulling out the stops.  Her honesty is refreshing.
If I have to I'll vote for
Kumbaya, and I remain a cynic.  :-)
It's all about intent, cChal, not that it's anti-Obama.
It's not a division by candidate and who supports who; it's about how it is repeated ad nausem day after day, same old stuff, nothing new when it's clear that it is no longer welcome. The message goes away and the person winds up looking like the "victim" for posting "the facts" and claim to be "the messenger."
I can't stomach that at all and others are just expressing the same sentiment.
