DFA-Asheville Endorsement Questionnaire - County Commission
1. In what areas do you think Buncombe could be leading the rest of the country?
2. What is your number one priority with regard to development and land use?
3. Growth projections for Buncombe are continually revised upward. Have previous approaches to development become obsolete? Would you support a temporary moratorium on development while the county works with municipal governments to prepare for these new projections?
4. How can the county practice environmental stewardship and promote broad-based economic growth at the same time?
5. Many of our members want their local governments to lead the way in promoting energy independence and combatting global warming. In what ways should the county work towards these goals?
6. Do you see a role for the county in promoting energy efficiency in transportation and residential and business use?
7. The county government plays a central role in providing social services. Where has it been most successful? Where does it most need improvement?
8. Do you think that the current commission has carried out its work in a manner that is sufficiently transparent? If not, how would you change things?
9. Has the current commission made decisions that you strongly disagree with? If so, what will you do to remedy those decisions if you are elected?
10. Do you have a plan for how you will win this election? If so, could you briefly describe the elements of your plan?
11. Would you call yourself a political progressive? Why or why not?
11. Would you call yourself a political progressive? Why or why not?
When I call myself anything it's a liberal. Why? Because I refuse to knuckle under the the vilification of that noble term by the cons.

"I think it’s all due to the economic problems the Bush administration has created with this war. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back," said Mark Ostlund of Stonington, who held an American flag in one hand and a white peace-sign flag in the other. Ostlund said he’s a submarine vet from the Cold War.
Every few minutes a driver honks a car horn in support, or a passenger rolls down the window to wave and give a thumbs-up to the group of 13 demonstrators. There are also fewer flipped birds, said Jim Loughlin of Old Mystic, a retired veteran Navy SeaBee who has been standing here each Saturday since Thanksgiving 2005.
A car blasted a rat-a-tat-tat of support as it drove past the anti-war group.
"We’ve been getting a lot more of that in the past few months," said Loughlin, an organizer for the Obama campaign. He cited economic reasons for why the group is seeing and hearing more support each Saturday. "Bush is absolutely destroying our economy, he’s an agent of destruction, and so many are taken in by him."

Holly cow! Florida has just moved ahead into the 21st century!!
In answer to the Christian fundamentalists' demands to teach "intelligent design" in our schools, instead the State Board of Education has today decided to mandate the teaching of evolution, or as it will be called in the schools "scientific theory." No non-science allowed.
Now if they would also move even further ahead and build the amount of schools we actually need here, pay teachers more money, teach art and music, and if the feds (Obama's promise) to quit tying up our teachers hands by requiring them to teach to a stupid test -- then we will truly be moving into this new century.

Actually, FL has finally moved ahead into the 19th century since that's when Darwin put forward the law of natural selection.

---> Who, the Obama campaign? Because he has the people who took an oath to "take out Howard Dean"? When they left the Kerry campaign, Gibbs in particular, with other strategists and formed Americans for Jobs, Health Care and Progressive Values PAC and ended their smear campaign with the Osama/Dean ads?

There is no reason to change the rules (which would be part of a convention melee) if Obama just keeps up his winning streak, so supporters have to just keep doing what they have been doing and all of that can be avoided.
change one thing and you open a can of worms
every other change will be demanded, and in the end a majority of the delegates approves the credentials report, so the majority will have it's say no matter what
best win that majority in the voting, since the best guess puts the super delegates in a tie, which would favor the candidate with the most votes
I guarantee nine out of ten of the delegates want to win in November more than they shade towards one or the other and will avoid a blowup in Denver that the appearance of a "fix" would cause.
going forward let the critters win their seat like anyone else in another cycle, same with Party Chairs and mayors, most of them would ,however, which would dilute the power of volunteer supporters
by creating a category of extra convention delegates (the supers) it actually opens up more seats for regular folk involved because of a certain candidate rather than the long term party interests
if you have a convention at all you have to find a way to elect the individuals that are called delegates one way or another
right now a majority are "pledged" by allocation determined by voters
so just go out and win that majority

Hillary's Hispanic Support ErodingWASHINGTON (CBS4) ― Senator Hillary Clinton's last stand in Texas hinges upon a large number of Hispanics voting for her. This is the same strategy the junior Senator from New York used in California, where support upon Hispanics was large. However, new polling from Gallup shows serious trouble may be on the horizon for Clinton. The latest Gallup poll shows support for Illinois Senator Barack Obama among Hispanics has grown to a statistically significant lead. A full 50% of those surveyed chose Obama, while 46% supported Clinton. ...Only a month ago, Clinton led Obama by a nearly 2-1 margin with 63% supporting her to Obama's 32%. ...

sitka,
Actually, the State Board of Education needs to remove the word "theory" from the "Scientific Theory of Evolution" which was included as a sort of compromise er - patronizing.
I can't imagin a teacher teaching evolution to refer to it as a theory since it has countless indisputable evidence. But anything is better than being forced to teach "intelligent design" in a public school.
Just a reminder about what FL did, how they did it, who did it....and why the delegates must not count.
Jeremy Ring (D-FL) said "relevance is more important than "partying" in Denver.

Wonder what kind of party he thought would go on in Denver. I worry about my state leaders.

rdorgan, I recall one of my co-workers saying several months ago she was supporting Hillary because Hillary could win. She felt at the time that no other candidate was able to beat the GOP except Hillary.
Now we have polls showing Obama doing marginally better against McCain, plus many primaries and caucuses showing his strong multi-racial support in all areas of the country. This leaves people like my co-worker to question whether ONLY Hillary can win.
It gives them a second viable choice and some will now take that choice instead. The Clintons' 8 years in the WH works against them, IMO. Young people are tired of nothing but Bush or Clinton or Clinton or Bush.
Oh, and last time I looked, the Theory of Evolution had not yet been declared the Law of Evolution. "Scientific theory" is scientifically accurate, not a sop.

(12-27) 04:00 PST Los Angeles -- The amount of high-quality heroin available throughout the United States is surging because of an increasing supply from Afghanistan, and with it comes the fear that record-breaking poppy harvests after the U.S. invasion are fueling more addictions and overdose deaths back home.
Heroin-related deaths in Los Angeles County soared from 137 in 2002 to 282 in 2004 before dropping to 239 in 2005, still a jump of nearly 75 percent in three years, a period when other factors contributing to overdose deaths remained unchanged, experts said.
The jump in deaths was especially prevalent among users older than 40, who lack the resilience to recover from an overdose of unexpectedly strong heroin, according to a study by the county's Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology.

POLITICAL COMMENTARY: Clintons Plumb Absurd Depthsby Robert ParryLike the Bushes, the Clintons seem to believe they have some special entitlement to the White House, and thus whatever they do to get there is justified. The two ruling families function with a monarchical air
...
like the Bushes, who bullied their way back into the White House by shutting down vote-counting in Florida in December 2000, the Clintons also seem to view their claim on the presidency as a right. Any serious challenger must be treated as a pretender guilty of the crime of insolence.
So, even as Hillary Clinton’s cornerstone argument – her “ready on Day One” superior management skills – has crumbled amid the wreckage of her inept campaign, she sends her surrogates out to attack Barack Obama over trivial matters
...
Her recent action – dispatching her spokesmen to attack Obama’s character over trivial issues – does speak volumes. It underscores that the Clintons are prepared to sink to any depth and create bitter divisions within the electorate to secure what they regard as their entitlement, the presidency of the United States.

Judge Judy endorses Obama... Michelle Obama!
Interviewed yesterday on what she thought of the candidates, she complimented Hillary Clinton's political skills and John McCain's straight talk, but then enthused about Michelle Obama, what a wonderful person she is, and what an asset she is to Barack.
She did not mention Bill Clinton or, for that matter, Cindy McCain.
The overall impression that was left is, Judge Judy is an Obama Mama. She also said she would never run for office herself because she is used to being an autocrat. LOL

What difference does it make to you? You're supporting Clinton, Dean's biggest nemesis in the Democratic Party.
