A new Zogby International Poll of 7,468 likely voters nationwide, Obama would beat McCain in a national election with 47 percent supporting Obama and 36 percent supporting McCain. Clinton would lose to McCain in this poll also, with McCain getting 42 percent of support versus 37 percent for Clinton, according to the Zogby poll.

"The voters have to speak first before people like me get involved and try to put together things like that. I mean, let‘s listen to the voters before we—you know, on television everybody handicaps everything. I‘ve sort of given up watching television in between these elections because people blab and blab and blab. But the fact is, the voters—it‘s the voters‘ turn.

DEAN: It‘s not the pundits‘ turn. It‘s not the pollsters‘ turn. This is the voters‘ turn. This last month-and-a-half and this next two or three months coming up, this is the voters‘ turn. It‘s time for us to shut up and listen to the voters, and that‘s what I‘m going to do."Go Howard.

Joan

I agree that Obama did well as the underdog, a volunteer from Iowa that saw detailed organizing around events here saw a bit of over-confidence that showed up un Madison today in that volunteers weren't immediately tasked on followup phone calls (of the kind Karen and rae made) and there was an air of over-confidence and expressed concern in a call to me a few minutes ago. Wisconsin is where Obama increases his lead and the more the better, in Iowa they got 15 calls. In Wisconsin they need at least one and the volunteers are ready. They need to be on their A game or Clinton will sneak back into it. Howard has it right let the voters speak. They still need that personal invite.

Clinton wins New Mexico caucuses

Posted: 05:16 PM ET
(CNN) — Hillary Clinton has officially won the New Mexico Democratic caucuses, more than a week after the state's February 5 Election Day.

After a nine-day vote count, the state party chairman announced the result Thursday.

Clinton now has one more delegate to add to her total — she will receive 14 of the state's pledged delegates, and Obama 12.

The New York senator and her Democratic rival, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, were separated by just 1,709 votes in the final tally — 73,105 for Clinton, 71,396 for Obama.

The count had been delayed by a large number of provisional ballots

Dems grow mini-balls

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/14/house-in-chaos-after-repu_n_86639.html

WASHINGTON — The House voted Thursday to hold two of President Bush's confidants in contempt for failing to cooperate with an inquiry into whether a purge of federal prosecutors was politically motivated.

Angry Republicans boycotted the vote and staged a walkout.

The vote was 223-32 to hold White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in contempt. The citations charge Miers with failing to testify and accuse her and Bolten of refusing Congress' demands for documents related to the 2006-2007 firings.

Hillary can try and make her point about Obama being afraid of debating her.

He's only debated her 18 times. The Clintons are at the "throw everything and hope anything sticks mode" -- the sure sign of a campaign that's just waiting for the fork to be stuck in it.

Rep. Robert Wexler rocks! It's because of him that Nancy Pelosi relented and Congress voted to cite Josh Bolten and Harriet Miers for contempt. The Republicrooks walked out of the chamber and boycotted the vote -- let's hope they don't come back. There is yet hope for keeping democracy alive.

See Wexler grilling AG Mukasey, catching him lying under oath about previous administrations:

I agree Mary, and how foolish, childish and desperate she is looking these days. Clapping for herself for nine minutes in El Paso isn't was just as foolish, childish and desperate. She had to coach the audience to clap as she does -- kinda like kindergarten -- because they just didn't have that kind of exuberance in them to begin with.

The 1.3-million-member United Food and Commercial Workers union endorsed Sen. Barack Obama today over rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, in a nod that could hold implications for the upcoming high-stakes contests on March 4 in Ohio and Texas.

The UFCW has 70,000 members in Ohio, 40% of which are under 30 years of age — a demographic that has trended toward the Illinois senator this election cycle. In a statement, president Joe Hansen noted the union has “a powerful presence and a strong organization” in Texas and Ohio, as well as Wisconsin and Hawaii, which will hold their contests on Feb. 19.

California's slow count is the product of a couple of factors: the state's growing love affair with absentee ballots paired with a high-voltage primary that drew inexperienced voters who were enthusiastic but sometimes careless.

1 MILLION VOTES STILL UNTALLIED IN CALIFORNIA

...In Sacramento County, 90,000 ballots remain unprocessed, while 277,000 had been counted as of Wednesday afternoon.

Los Angeles County has 200,000 unprocessed ballots – and that's not counting the 50,000 presidential votes it discarded because a quarter of the decline-to-state voters improperly marked the county's ballots.

Statewide, Weir said, most of the uncounted votes – about 600,000 – are absentee ballots turned in on election day. Still to be vetted, he reckons, are 400,000 provisional ballots, which typically are valid about 85 percent of the time.

He estimates 10,000 more uncounted ballots are damaged: shredded in the mail, mutilated in vote-counting machines, or gummed up by sloppy voters who dribbled coffee or ketchup on their absentee ballots. Election workers must pry them open, try to figure out the voter's intention, and then create a fresh ballot to feed into the machine...

Rep. Elesha Gayman, author and sponsor of the Generation Iowa Bill, is proud to announce that the Generation Iowa Commission has launched their new website, www.generationiowa.com on Friday, February 8th. The website is designed to link young professional Iowans to career resources, Iowa events, recreational activities and the latest news.

The Generation Iowa Commission was formed last year to help retain talented young Iowans and present recommendations to prevent Iowa’s “brain drain.”  The recommendations included bridging Iowa’s wage gap, improving Iowa’s image to young people, and income tax incentives.

Part of the promotion to keep young Iowans in the state is the new free Generation Iowa website.  Now, information for young Iowans will be in one central location for the first time.

The website includes social networking, as well as written materials, photos and videos all submitted by Iowans.  This will give young professionals from ages 18-35 a chance to interact with other young people all across Iowa.

Good luck with ships in central Chad. Explosive probably would probaly be an "unnecessary" weight for the satellite, which is critical, but I cannot understand where all that "star wars" money went, if we don't have a beam to zap our own space junk...or at least effect the orbit (and re-entry location)

It is rumored that Pelosi is thinking about endorsing Obama.

“The provision in the Senate version of the Farm Bill actually protects a producer’s right to participate in marketing arrangements and contracts by clearly stating that the prohibition does not apply when producers maintain ownership of their livestock and when they materially participate in the management of their livestock production.  “In addition, the prohibition exempts any packer that owns only one processing plant, regardless of size, exempts any packer that slaughters fewer than 125,000 cattle annually (based on a 5-year average), and exempts any packer that is owned by producers through a cooperative,” he pointed out. “It is difficult enough for producers to protect the competitiveness of their U.S. livestock market when just four meatpackers – that have more than 80 percent control over steer and heifer slaughter – have such dominate control over our markets,” Bullard continued. “Now, with NCBA going around the country and spreading false and outrageous claims in order to protect the largest meatpackers from needed reforms, producers are faced with an impossible situation.” R-CALF USA believes the prohibition on packer ownership of livestock is a necessary reform to prevent the multinational packers from restricting producer access to the marketplace, a practice that enables those packers to gain a significant pricing advantage over cattle producers. “The practice of packer ownership of livestock is what allowed the packers to gain full control over the entire U.S. poultry production industry, and which allowed the packers to eliminate 90 percent of independent U.S. hog operations,” said Bullard. “According to USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture), in just the last 25 years, the number of U.S. hog operations fell from 667,000 to only 67,000 from 1980 to 2005. “Unless the cattle industry takes steps right now to protect the integrity of their marketplace, U.S. cattle producers will go the way of the hog industry – they will have to trade their independence for a production contract with the packers, provided they even receive an invitation to do so,” he emphasized.

March 31
World Heavyweight Champ and legend, Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson

*Jack Johnson was born on this date in 1878. He was an African-American Boxer, and the first Black heavyweight-boxing champion.

John Arthur (Jack) Johnson, from Galveston, Texas, quit school after the fifth grade and became interested in boxing while working as a janitor at a local gymnasium. He turned professional in 1897. In 113 fights, over the next 35 years, he lost only eight. He is still considered one of the great counter punchers of all time. A 1903 victory over "Denver Ed" Martin established Johnson as the unofficial Black heavyweight champion. John L. Sullivan and Jim Jeffries refused to fight Johnson, claiming that to do so would sully the sport’s reputation.

On December 26, 1908, finally given the opportunity to compete for the heavyweight championship in a fight in Sydney, Australia, Johnson dethroned the reigning champion Tommy Burns. Johnson defended his championship against five white fighters over the next two years. Responding to the call of legions of white fans anxious to restore boxing’s traditional racial hierarchy, Jim Jeffries came out of retirement to challenge the Black champion. Billed as "The Great White Hope," Jeffries fought Johnson in "The Fight of the Century" on July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada. Johnson soundly beat Jeffries.

Clinton thought she "deserved" Maine, too, Sitka.

 It backfired...horribly!

15-9 national delegates for Obama.

ME caucus results

We're poor, working class/blue-collar, and "whitest in the nation" status.

She had Big Dog up here stumping, Chelsea, and she swooped thru for two days.

...but blew off her tiny overflow supporters @U/Maine, which was a huge mistake--word got out.

Obama packed "The Mecca"--Bangor's never seen anything like it.

He met with his overflow (a few thousand, who'd stood in line for hours) *before* he went inside to thousands more.

It's not a good idear to treat Mainers like shit.  We retaliate.

It's the auditorium where all basketball tourneys are played--Shriner Circus--biggest venue in the area.

Generations of memories.

Hillary wanted a "debate," natch.  She didn't get one!

Hell, even my uber-conservative Dem. caucus voted Obama (94-93).

I'm an alternate to the state convention, but my car will be hauled off tomorrow--died.

Time for "Plan B!"

Largest turnout we've ever seen (made '04 look like nuthin').

 Go, Obama!

Oh..."young voters" in Maine did not turn out (I knew they wouldn't).

Obama won across all SES levels and with both sexes--throughout Maine.

We enrolled thousands of unenrolleds into the Dem. party--that's not to say they'll remain enrolled.

You can't get more working class and blue collar than Maine (or white)!

People here don't earn close to $50K per yr.

Only 23% have earned a Bachelor's degree, so toss that stereotype out the window, too.

Her campaign mgr. resigned/was fired within hours after she lost ME.

...and our votes put him over the top in delegates.

Love it!

I wouldn't be surprised if he walked out with the Repugs who he endeavors to emulate at every opportunity.
