DFA Pasadena Fights for Universal Healthcare and against FISA telecom immunity
Linked to groups: DFA Pasadena
I wanted to write a brief post to say how incredibly proud I am to be a member of such a great group of DFA'ers in Pasadena. We got together for our monthly meeting a little later than the rest of you but we really got to work.
This is the tangible result of a night's work. 52 letters to our state, congressional and senatorial representatives on two subjects we feel very passionately about:
Shiela Kuehl's SB 840 - Universal Health Care
and
Fighting the Democratic Senate's failure to strip telecom immunity from the FISA bill today.

We're also excited about taking on Republican Congressman, David Dreier ("FIRE DREIER") and supporting Russ Warner in the San Gabriel Valley. In fact, our next meeting will be held in the heart of the 26th Congressional District - Monrovia, CA and will be all about how we can tie ourselves into Russ' campaign.
We talked about DFA Nightschool and the upcoming DFA Training Academy in San Diego on April 5-6. We hope to send a sizable delegation from Los Angeles so we are really ready for Russ's campaign and can begin to find other candidates to help us take our country back.
This group wasn't done either. Several more from our meeting tonight will be at a house party for "Uncounted" on Wednesday evening. Our newest steering committee member, Patrick, is hosting.
In the wake of an incredible grassroots victory in Maryland's 4th Congressional District, and after such a great meeting of enthusiastic DFA'ers, I realize that hope and community are alive for us in Pasadena. We are proud to be a part of Democracy for America!
COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Denmark's leading newspapers reprinted a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad on Wednesday, a day after three men were arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill the cartoonist whose work had spurred deadly protests in the Muslim world.
The papers said they wanted to show their firm commitment to freedom of speech after Tuesday's arrests in western Denmark.
The Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which first published 12 depictions of Muhammad on Sept. 30, 2005, reprinted Kurt Westergaard's cartoon in its Wednesday edition. Several other major dailies also reprinted the drawing, which shows Muhammad wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a lit fuse.

Obama gets resounding support in V.I. caucuses
By MEGAN POINSKI
Monday, February 11th 2008
Virgin Islands Democrats overwhelmingly selected Illinois Sen. Barack Obama as their choice for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president on Saturday.
Ninety percent of the Democrats who came out to vote territorywide selected Obama as the person whom they want to receive the nomination. With these votes -Â as well as votes for six delegate candidates who have pledged to support Obama at the Democratic National Convention in August - the territory has added three votes to Obama's burgeoning total.
...
While Virgin Islands voters are not able to vote for the U.S. president, the territory's Democratic Party holds caucuses every four years to select delegates for the convention - and to select candidates that the territory will support. In 2004, Benjamin said, 788 voters cast ballots. This year, close to three times that amount - a total of 2,059 - came out to participate in the caucus.
Democratic Party State Chairman Cecil Benjamin, who already has announced his support for Obama, said that Saturday was a record-breaking day

Why John Edwards Believers Should Support Barack ObamaPosted February 12, 2008 | 09:14 PM (EST)
Can We Still Build One America? Yes We Can
(Note: I was the former Director of Online Engagement for John Edwards for President. The following reflects only the personal views of the author, and in no way represents the views of John Edwards, his campaign, nor anyone else currently or formerly affiliated with his campaign.)
The first time I spoke to John Edwards about joining his campaign, I mentioned the Wellstone quote that's in my email signature, 'Politics isn't about big money or power games; it's about the improvement of people's lives.' His voice brightened considerably. "That, right there," he said, "is the point of this campaign." I believed him. I gave up everything and moved to Chapel Hill. And that remained the point of our campaign for One America through the very end.
Now I, like many Edwards people, face a choice we never wanted, but we cannot ignore. We must decide after John, which remaining candidate is the best bet to finish what we started -- making real improvements in the lives of the people who really need it?
After many conversations, comparisons, and soul searching, my personal answer, and my advice to other Edwards believers wrestling with the same question, is Barack Obama. Here's why:
...
The Movement
If the candidate's commitment and record tell us who is most willing, how can we evaluate who is most able? From where I sit, both Hillary and Obama appear to be both highly intelligent, competent people. But as John Edwards so often reminded us, no president can end poverty on their own. Transformational change of that magnitude requires an equally large movement of people fighting to make it happen. So who is building that movement?
Again, I'm a web guy. If you look at the numbers, they both have passionate grassroots support, but the difference is clear. Obama supporters have created 9x more local groups, 10x more national groups, and 15x more personal blogs. Obama's web traffic, donors, and online to offline volunteers smash all records. And I can tell you, there's no technology or trick to generate that kind of energy -- it just has to be real.
But this goes beyond the numbers, and yes, far beyond the web. After all, Barack Obama isn't John Edwards, and I can't know if he'll actually put ending poverty at the top of his agenda. But by inspiring millions of people to believe in their own power to create change, I do know his campaign is laying the groundwork for those of us who will.
The Future
We always thought of winning the presidency as merely the first step in a generational effort to build One America -- and so it remains. We must keep speaking out, organizing, and fighting at every opportunity -- in every town hall, statehouse, Congressional house and the Whitehouse until poverty is history and the dream of One America becomes reality.
And right now, I believe we have to pick our best hope for a president who will be a partner in that effort. If Hillary is nominated she will deserve our vigorous support. But because of his commitment, his record, and his unique ability to swell our ranks with people fired up and ready to begin the struggle of a lifetime, I believe Barack Obama is that best hope.
So, can we still build One America? Yes. Yes we can.

Nebraska Native American and Superdelegate Frank LaMere Endorses Barack Obama for President
By newsdesk - Posted on February 11th, 2008
Tagged: 2008 Presidential election • Barack Obama • Democratic Party • Native Americans • Nebraska • Politics
February 08, 2008 -- Dakota City, Ne. - Today Frank LaMere, Nebraska superdelegate and chairman of the Democratic National Committee's Native American Caucus, endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President and released the following statement.
"We, as Native Americans, have always stood four square with the Democratic Party and they have always stood four square with us. We will continue to do so in 2008 as we elect a Democratic President to restore the national vision that has been blurred during the last eight years. I ask your help in this endeavor.
All in this country know that Native people continue to suffer disproportionate need. In light of the service and sacrifice of or young men and women during times of war it is hard to reconcile why this should be. We must continue to pray that things be better for the children, the elders, the sick and incarcerated, all of the dispossessed among us. We must pray for those who have no voice. More importantly, we must continue to hope. Our forebears have taught us that the survival of the generations to come is dependent on our willingness to hope and to change things for the better.
To this end, there is a man who talks of this audacity of hope and of the need for change. He is Barack Obama. He has engaged the Indian Nations with his message and we have listened. It is now time to act.
Hope has always been the basic tenet of the Democratic Party and not an obscure backdrop. Change should be looked at in terms of generations and not what we might be able to do to win the next election without affecting anyone's comfort level.
Hope and change require that we be audacious and Barack Obama knows this better than anyone. We must acknowledge this bold man among us and the good heart that he has for all of the people.
As Chairman of the Native Caucus of the Democratic National Committee and as a Winnebago Indian mindful of what I may leave for my children, my grandchildren, and all of the generations to come I am humbled but pleased to endorse Barack Obama to be the Democratic nominee for the presidency of the United States.
I beg your indulgence and respectuflly as that Native people from the four directions join with me in this work as we are all related. It will be good. Pi-nah-gi-gi. Thank you.

Sharpton: Don't Seat Fla., Mich.
posted 10:48 am Wed February 13, 2008 - Washington Seating delegates from Florida and Michigan at the Democratic National Convention would be a grave injustice, the Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday in a break with prominent civil rights leaders. "I firmly believe that changing the rules now, and seating delegates from Florida and Michigan at this point would not only violate the Democratic Party's rules of fairness, but also would be a grave injustice," Sharpton said in a letter to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean."As former presidential candidates we both know that, whether we liked them or not, we adhered to the rules set forth by the Democratic Party to select its nominee for president."...NAACP chairman Julian Bond also wrote Dean recently, taking the opposite position. Bond said failure to seat the delegates would disenfranchise minority voters in Florida and Michigan.
...Sharpton said he disagreed with those who say minority voters in Florida and Michigan will be disenfranchised.
"That claim, if true, should have been made many months ago before the decision was made to strip these states of their delegates, and, once the decision was made, it should have been vigorously objected to and contested by those who felt it disenfranchised voters," Sharpton wrote. "To raise that claim now smacks of politics in its form most raw and undercuts the moral authority behind such an argument."
The DNC has said it would allow both states to hold a different contest, probably a caucus, that would comply with party rules. Either state can also appeal the penalty to the DNC credentials committee, which will not meet again until this summer.
I read a piece over at First Read that Edwards wants to see what happens in OH and TX before he endorses anyone. If this is true - Edwards' credibility is about zero. This is my opinion so don't flame me.
I'll go get the link.
First Read on Edwards:
---------
** Edwards watch: Did anyone else find this quote in todays New York Times a bit interesting? "You can't make a judgment until Ohio and Texas," said Jonathan Prince, who was a senior adviser to John Edwards of North Carolina, who quit the race two weeks ago. "In this campaign, every time he has surged ahead, voters take a pause. If momentum keeps slamming into a wall, than you do have to come down to the numbers." Is this what Edwards is thinking about in an eventual endorsement?

FEMA: Trains To Take You To The Camps
Lee Rogers
Rogue Government
February 13, 2008
The U.S. government continues to expand its plans to setup a nationalized concentration camp system under the guise of emergency management. FEMA has already come a long way in establishing their concentration camp system, but now it looks as if they might be trying to figure out a way to transport people to these facilities. A disturbing revelation from a FEMA official confirmed that the institution is looking at ways to use passenger trains to get elderly and sick people out of harms way during an emergency situation. According to an Associated Press report, FEMA official Glenn Cannon made these revelations testifying in front of a congressional subcommittee in New Orleans. Although this might seem like a relatively minor development, it is actually very serious considering preparations the U.S. government has already made for martial law and the establishment of FEMA run concentration camps. Looking back in history, the Nazis used trains to transport large groups of Jews to concentration camps where many of them were put to death. It appears as if FEMA is moving in the direction of setting up a similar transportation system that could take not just the sick and elderly but all sorts of people to these concentration camps.
Below is the entire Associated Press report on this subject.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency may expand use of passenger trains to evacuate the elderly and sick if hurricanes threaten the Gulf Coast.
FEMA official Glenn Cannon today testified before a congressional subcommittee in New Orleans.
Cannon says FEMA is looking at passenger trains as a method to get people with physical impediments out of harm’s way.
New Orleans has become something of a guinea pig for train evacuations.
After 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, Amtrak was hired to be on hand if another hurricane struck — to evacuate people with special needs. Cannon says FEMA is now devising disaster plans for other Gulf Coast cities based on the New Orleans model.
City officials say Congress and FEMA should create a national plan to use trains in disasters.
According to this report, it appears as if New Orleans was a test model to setup train evacuations. Cannon even admits that FEMA is devising similar disaster plans based off of the New Orleans model. With city officials saying that Congress and FEMA should create a national plan to use trains to transport people in emergency situation, this should immediately draw a great deal of concern. The U.S. government and FEMA failed to help people during Hurricane Katrina, so why should we put any trust in what they are doing now with these train evacuations? Cannon says that this is only for the elderly and the sick, but can this really be believed? In fact, considering the track record of FEMA, the true purpose of this organization appears not to be a vehicle to help people during an emergency, but instead to ensure government continuity and be the administrative and executive arm of the government during a martial law scenario.
;
During the Iran Contra hearings in the 1980s, the existence of a plan called Readiness Exercise 84 (Rex 84) was revealed. Rex 84 outlined a plan for concentration camps which would be placed under the operational control of FEMA should martial law need to be implemented. It is a matter of public record that a number of these concentration camps do exist. In fact there are even some reports indicating that there are hundreds of these FEMA run concentration camps. Video of these concentration camps indicate that they have fences with barb wire pointing inward so people that are in the camps can’t get out. Also, many of these concentration camps are accessible via rail which will allow them to conveniently transport large amounts of people into these facilities.
The fact that we already have concentration camps in the United States many of which are accessible by rail makes it pretty obvious what these people have in mind. They need to have a system in place to transport large amounts of people to these concentration camps during a martial law scenario. All the evidence indicates that they are in fact setting up a concentration camp system for this purpose and it is comparable to what the Nazis setup in Germany. Whatever you do, do not go to a government run FEMA camp. If you do, you might end up dead like the Jews in the Nazi death camps.

Lou Dobbs alert: Illegal immigrants may get rebates
Politico
Wednesday, January 30, 2008
In their bipartisan zeal to quickly cut a deal on an economic stimulus bill, GOP lawmakers overlooked something that will certainly inflame the conservative base _ illegal immigrants could receive a tax rebate check from the government.
The text of the House passed bill contains language making “non resident aliens” _ illegal immigrants _ ineligible for the tax rebates. But every year, hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants use individual taxpayer identification numbers, known as ITINs, to file income tax returns with the IRS. These ID numbers are used instead of Social Security numbers. There are no exact statistics for how many illegal immigrants file tax returns, but this New York Times story from last year details the significant increase in use of ITINs. This story also lays out the issue.
Immigration advocates point out that many legal immigrants use ITINs, so it would be impossible to outlaw rebates for everyone who uses this form of ID in tax returns.
Republicans who were involved in negotiating the bipartisan economic stimulus package would like to avoid the illegal immigration debate as the $146 billion bill comes to the Senate this week. Congressional aides say the problem is that the IRS is not a law enforcement agency, so it doesn’t check immigration status when people file tax returns.
“The reality is that those who filed a tax return will be eligible” for tax rebates of $600 to $1,200, said Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.). “This [issue] has not been addressed” by the senators writing the bill.
Michael you are accurate about the history of the forced movement of the Native American Nations but probably incorrect about the effect of Obama's speech.
However, don't think for a moment that tribal leaders necessarily speak for the members of any particular Nation. Tribal Councils, while much more independent from the US government and responsive to the needs of the Nations they represent still, in many cases, have self interest at the heart of their decisions.
If there is any group of people in this country who have still not been compensated for the horror that was inflicted upon them it is the Native Americans. While we were so supportive of MIdnight Oil's sentiments in the song Beds are Burning (1987) we have still not returned the Paha Sapa (Black Hills, Treaty of Fort Laramie) to the Lakota Nation or the most of what is now Nevada to the Western Shoshone (Treaty of Ruby Valley 1853). Other broken treaties litter the landscape of western expansion.

Fake Terrorism Keeps Chertoff Awake at Night
J.J. Green
WTOP Radio
February 11, 2008
Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff’s eyes narrow and his voice develops a stern, urgent tone as he reveals America’s biggest vulnerability to terrorism.
"The great weapon they have is persistence and patience, and the one weakness that we have is the tendency to lose patience and become complacent," Chertoff tells WTOP.
"It strikes me as hard to accept that anybody would believe the threat is over. There is nothing these terrorists are doing or saying that could lead a reasonable person to believe that they have somehow lost interest. Our biggest challenge is making sure we do not drop our guard because time passes."
Chertoff recognizes it has been more than six years since al Qaida launched the Sept. 11 attacks, but some experts say that’s how long it took to plan them, suggesting the U.S. may close in on another spectacular attempt by Osama bin Laden to topple the U.S. economy.
"If you’re asking me what keeps me up at night or what I most worry about — in the short term, obviously, you worry about homegrown terrorists or somebody coming in with an explosive device or the kind of act of violence or terror that we’ve actually seen occasionally carried out in this country by people who are simply nuts or like a Timothy McVeigh. close the border ass hole,[o] homegrown terrorists thats us hes talking about, what a fake the boogie man coming, duck and cover

ON DEADLINE: Chickens come home to roost
By RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Feb 12, 10:30 PM ET
WASHINGTON - For years, Bill and Hillary Clinton treated the Democratic National Committee and party activists as extensions of their White House ambitions, pawns in a game of success and survival. She may pay a high price for their selfishness soon.
Top Democrats, including some inside Hillary Clinton's campaign, say many party leaders — the so-called superdelegates — won't hesitate to ditch the former New York senator for Barack Obama if her political problems persist. Their loyalty to the first couple is built on shaky ground.
...
Some are labor leaders still angry that Bill Clinton championed the North American Free Trade Agreement as part of his centrist agenda.
Some are social activists who lobbied unsuccessfully to get him to veto welfare reform legislation, a talking point for his 1996 re-election campaign.
Some served in Congress when the Clintons dismissed their advice on health care reform in 1993. Some called her a bully at the time.
Some are DNC members who saw the party committee weakened under the Clintons and watched President Bush use the White House to build up the Republican National Committee.
Some are senators who had to defend Clinton for lying to the country about his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
Some are allies of former Vice President Al Gore who still believe the Lewinsky scandal cost him the presidency in 2000.
Some are House members (or former House members) who still blame Clinton for Republicans seizing control of the House in 1994.
Some are donors who paid for the Clintons' campaigns and his presidential library.
Some are folks who owe the Clintons a favor but still feel betrayed or taken for granted. Could that be why Bill Richardson, a former U.N. secretary and energy secretary in the Clinton administration, refused to endorse her even after an angry call from the former president? "What," Bill Clinton reportedly asked Richardson, "isn't two Cabinet posts enough?"
And some just want something new. They appreciate the fact that Clinton was a successful president and his wife was an able partner, but they never loved the couple as much as they feared them.
Never count the Clintons out. They are brilliant politicians who defied conventional wisdom countless times in Arkansas and Washington. But time is running out.

...As a possible first Madame President, Hillary is a flawed science experiment because you cant take Bill out of the equation. Her story is wrapped up in her marriage, and her marriage is wrapped up in a series of unappetizing compromises, arrangements and dependencies.
Instead of carving out a separate identity for herself, she has become more entwined with Bill. She is running bolstered by his record and his muscle. She touts her experience as first lady, even though her judgment during those years on issue after issue was poor. She says shes learned from her mistakes, but thats not a compelling pitch....

After Mr. Edwards promised to stay in the race all the way to the convention and our local newspaper endorsed him. I sent my vote by mail ballot in early and endorsed him. A lot of Edwards' supporters in California did the same. At this point I could careless if Edwards endorses anybody. His word are meaningless to me. The hack lost all his creditability with me. I feel sorry for Elizabeth.
On election day I made as many calls and went out to get out the vote for Obama. One person I spoke to on election called his wife and she got their whole network of folks to vote for Obama. It was around 60 votes.
btw, John Edwards should have shaved his head for Elizabeth and every other women who has ever gone through breast cancer. Trippi is as loser. It's not good for political hacks and there pets to lie by making false promises to honest working people and the poor.
By a vote of 68-29 yesterday the Senate gave President Bush more expanded powers for his illegal spying program against innocent Americans. The measure also gives retroactive immunity to the Telecoms for being accomplices with the White House in its law breaking and Constitution shredding. Despite much public outcry against any retroactive immunity for the phone companies in recent weeks.
Many of the Senate Democrats once again stab their constituents in the back. Again, afraid of being labeled as "weak on terror." The hell with our Civil Liberties and Constitutional Rights! The hell with upholding their sworn oath to Defend The Constitution!
A lot of spineless Senate Democrats sided with the Republicans again for the vote to be this lopsided. I hope the House Dems show more leadership and courage in doing the right thing than the Senate Dems did. NO RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY TO THE TELECOM GIANTS! What ever happened to the concept that nobody is above the law in America?
