A Huge Victory

Written by: Ilya Sheyman on Jan 28, 2008 7:10 PM EST

We just won an incredible last minute victory in the Senate. Senate Democrats stood up to the Bush administration and stopped telecom immunity. Here's a message Jim just sent out:

We just had a huge victory. Grassroots action forced the Senate to stop telecom immunity from passing.

Earlier today, DFA members made over 1,000 calls an hour to our Senators. And they heard our voices loud and clear.

Tonight I'll be watching President Bush give his final State of the Union. As usual, he will be fear-mongering and pushing his radical agenda on the American people.

Thanks to your work today, we flipped the vote and forced Senate Democrats to have a backbone.

Jim

Thanks for all your hard work today. Tonight we celebrate, tomorrow we keep up the fight!

Edwards makes large ad buy on upcoming Feb 5 states

Edwards' Feb 5 Ad buy

From NBC's Victoria Riess
In a confrence call today, the Edwards campaign announced an "aggressive media buy" in ten states over the next 48 hours, which it plans to expand as February 5th approaches. According to the campaign, the ad buys will give the public more exposure to Edwards' message and help him win support because, "as we saw in South Carolina, once people have a chance to hear directly from John Edwards, the numbers move."

The campaign added that fundraising is booming, totalling almost $4 million dollars even before Federal Matching Funds took effect. The campaign noted that the most significant trend in an increase in fundraising came from long-time online supporters who made first-time contributions.

I'm having a fantasy that a brave bloc of progressives will hold up an "Impeach Cheney" sign tonight.

Elizabeth Holtzman | Impeach Bush and Cheney
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/012808R.shtml
In The Philadephia Inquirer, Elizabeth Holtzman writes: "Since mid-December, members of the House Judiciary Committee Robert Wexler (D-Florida), Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) have called for hearings on the impeachment of Vice President Cheney."

American Nurses Ass'n (Association) endorses Hillary

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 04:34:23 PM PST
The American Nurses Association, a national organization that represents the interests of 2.9 million nurses, has announced its endorsement of Senator Hillary Clinton.

This is a huge endorsement and shows that the hard-working men and women who toil in the nation's hospitals and clinics and nursing homes understand that Hillary Clinton is the best choice to tackle our health care nightmare.

Hitchens today:

"How can one equal Bill Clinton for thuggery and opportunism when it comes to the so-called "race card"? And where does one even start with the breathtaking nastiness of his own conduct, and that of his supporters, in the last week? Barack Obama carries South Carolina having made no sectarian appeal to any specific kind of voter, and the best Clinton can say is that this is no better than Jesse Jackson managed to do. Really? Did Jackson come south having already got himself elected the senator from Illinois? And, come to think of it, was Jackson so much to be despised and sneered at when he was needed as Clinton's "confessor," along with Billy Graham, during the squalor of impeachment?

This calculated willingness to shop on both sides of the street of racial politics was actually analyzed quite shrewdly by Dick Morris, the former consigliere of the gruesome twosome, in conversation with Sean Hannity last week. The Clintons, he thought, would be quite happy to lose big to the "black vote" in South Carolina. It would enable them to signal that they were the ones to stem the flow of the color tide. Morris' host protested that this seemed a touch cynical. Morris jovially assured him that he knew the people he was talking about."

Is everybody happy that Caroline K's 3 teenaged children led to all the Kennedy endorsements?  I'm not.  Teenagers go ga-ga over rock stars and then what does this say about Caroline's ability to think for herself?

I wonder how old they are?  Isn't this fun to have a rock star running for president?  Perhaps American Idol will endorse him next.

Jeez.  I was fine with all this until Keith reported on the childrens' role.

Oh well.  We'll get the leaders we deserve.   And I can move.

Five US soldiers killed in flashpoint Iraq city by Mujahed Mohammed
1 hour, 26 minutes ago

MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - Five US soldiers were killed in flashpoint Mosul city on Monday when their patrol was struck by a roadside bomb and then attacked by gunmen holed up in a nearby mosque, the American military said.

----

It's hard to believe they're still dying after many years of QUAGMIRE.

What a strategic disaster Iraq has turned out to be.

And the cost....some 12 BILLION dollars a month....that would make a nice tax rebate check to the 20 MILLION elderly who are being denied one under the current stimulus package. Shame on the War Parties.

Contact TruthNews Kindergarten Student Slapped in Handcuffs, Terrorized Over Acting Out in Class

Kurt Nimmo
Truth News
January 27, 2008

Back in the day, acting up in class resulted in a trip to the principle’s office, a one-way ticket to “detention” — think of Bart Simpson compelled to make amends with chalk and chalkboard — or a note sent home with the offender.

Now? It results in handcuffs and a trip to a mental ward: “Police and school officials are investigating a mother’s allegations that her 5-year-old son was handcuffed and taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after throwing a temper tantrum in his Queens kindergarten,” reports the Associated Press. “Jasmina Vasquez tells the Daily News her son, Dennis Rivera, was ’scared to death’ by the Jan. 17 incident at PS 81.”

Of course he was scared to death — and that’s the point: to teach children that if they act out in any unapproved way they will find themselves enmeshed in the claws of the state. It’s the sort of object lesson to be used later in life. It helps to do these sort of things during the formative years.

Well, at least there is a somewhat upbeat end to this story of government coercion and terrorism — in response, Vasquez has enrolled her son in a private school, where he will be safe, for now, that is until the government begins attacking private schools like they do in Germany.

Watching the SOTU.  Some observations.

For one thing, the guy's had more than a near beer before talking.  Another thing is that the rethugs have been so overly instructed to stand up and cheer that they do it at inappropriate times.  Dems are standing up too, so I can only assume they are adjusting their shorts.

bush doesn't seem to understand the platitudes he is barfing out.  Plus the speech is all about him, not about the country.  Nancy Pelosi is practically biting the inside of her cheeks trying not to laugh.

Shortcut to: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

"Of the Democratic congressional endorsements, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York leads the remaining candidates competing for their party's nomination with 79 viable endorsements. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois is in second with 59, and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina follows with 16.

Democratic congressional endorsements play an important role in a candidate's ability to secure the party's nomination, beyond any influence they might have with voters. Each Democratic member of Congress gets one vote at the party’s national convention in Denver this August, where the official nominee is elected. These are “superdelegate” votes — independent of their home state's primary or caucus outcomes, which result in the distribution of “pledged” delegates.

To win the nomination, a candidate needs 2,025 of the 4,049 available votes at the convention. There are 480 Democratic members of Congress. Of those, only 462 — about 11 percent of the total convention vote — will have a vote at this year’s convention, because Florida and Michigan have lost their seats due to violations of Democratic Party primary scheduling rules."

NOTE: THERE ARE NOT 480 DEMOCRATIC MEMBERS OF CONGRESS.
Otherwise, this might be an accurate total of Congressional super delegate pledges.

5 G.I.’s Die in Ambush in Mosul

By RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr.
Published: January 29, 2008

BAGHDAD — Sunni Arab guerrillas ambushed an American convoy in the northern city of Mosul with a roadside bomb on Monday, then sprayed survivors with machine-gun fire from perches in a nearby mosque, killing five American soldiers.

---------

Before this mistake got off the ground, professional military leadership said it would be impossible to secure such a significant piece of geography with a skeleton force. Yet, thats what we have there.

Despite heavy losses in men and equipment, the guerrillas return even stronger. They continue to slip through the net.
