Blackout Christmas: Save a Soldier, Save a Planet
By now, four years into Bush’s “war” in Iraq, it should be abundantly clear to everyone, even his minority hardcore base, that every reason Bush gave publicly for invading Iraq was a lie.
Saddam Hussein had no “WMD”, no ties with 9/11, no plans to get his hands on yellowcake uranium (remember those 16 words?), nothing, nothing at all.
One by one all of Bush’s assertions about Iraq’s threat to American have been proven to be lies.
So why did he do it?
Why did he knowingly send our troops out to be killed, mortgaged the future of our children and grandchildren to pay for his “war”, and in doing so jeopardize the entire American economy. What is it that Hussein had that made Bush disregard the future of America? What? The answer is one that seems so obvious now in retrospect that everyone should know it: All Bush ever wanted was Hussein’s oil.
He wanted it for his friends in Big Oil, the ones who have so lavishly supported his campaigns over the years. It was his way of paying them back for their generosity. It mattered not to him that he was paying them in blood. He knew that America was “addicted to oil” and that if he did get the oil, he most likely thought that America would love him for it just the way he thought our soldiers would be greeted as liberators. To this day the “war” has been such an utter failure that he has not even accomplished that mission and now he wants to leave his mess for someone else to clean up.
Well we, the American public, don’t have to wait for someone else. We can do something right now by decreasing our addiction to oil and all other types of energy. The best way to do this is to only use as much energy as you need to use in order to get by in daily life. Stop using energy that is unnecessary. One of the best ways to do this is by turning off lights when not in use and leaving lights off that are not essential. High on that list around this time of year is Christmas lights whether on your tree or on your house, they are not necessary and by leaving them off hopefully you will help save a soldier’s life and save our planet from the effects of Global Warming.
Before anyone starts saying that leaving their lights off would be any kind of hardship, they have to remember what their parents and grandparents went through in a time when America was involved in a real and, unfortunately, necessary war. During WWII, many essential materials were rationed and people planted Victory Gardens to grow their own fresh vegetables and leave the farmed food for the troops.
There is no reason and no time to wait on this. The sooner we cut our addiction to energy the sooner we save our planet and put an end to immoral and illegal “wars”.
Studios bring in PR doctors
With public support for striking writers widespread, the producers alliance calls on political veterans to revise its image. ...
...Since the strike began, the Writers Guild of America has mounted a highly effective PR campaign against the major studios and the media conglomerates that own them. Though the guild has tapped some media consultants, it has largely managed its public relations in-house, harnessing the writing talents of members to promote its cause.
Fabiani and Lehane, who are based in La Jolla, Calif., and San Francisco, respectively, have a long history in Democratic politics. Fabiani was former deputy mayor to Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. The men also have worked on behalf of various studios and professional sports teams and leagues, including the National Hockey League.
Schmidt, of Mercury Public Affairs in Sacramento, also has worked with several Hollywood studios and sports teams. He served in high-ranking posts with the Bush White House, including serving as the lead strategist on the confirmations of John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court. ...full article: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-st...
Legislator's ex-aide pleads guilty to sex with boys
Jeffrey Ray Nielsen worked for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in 1994, when he met one of the two boys.
By LARRY WELBORN
SANTA ANA – While his mother cried in the courtroom gallery, a former aide to an Orange County congressman stood between his two lawyers Wednesday and admitted molesting two boys.
Jeffrey Ray Nielsen’s admission came nine months after he insisted in testimony during his first trial that he never had sex, exposed himself, kissed, or touched one of the boys. That case ended with a hung jury.
Since then, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed a second case against Nielsen, charging him with molesting a Virginia teenager he met in 1994 when he was an aide in Washington, D.C., to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach.
Nielsen decided to plead guilty to molesting both boys – and accept a three-year prison sentence – rather than risk convictions during a second trial. He would have faced a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison had he been convicted on all counts.
Now he must serve at least 80 percent of the three-year term, and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. ...full story: http://www.ocregister.com/news/nielsen-c...

Oprah-Obama rally on Sunday moving to Williams-Brice Stadium
By Gina Smith · The (Columbia) State
Updated 12/06/07 - 1:06 AM
The 18,000-seat Colonial Center is just too small.
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign announced Wednesday that Sunday's rally featuring daytime talk show host Oprah Winfrey and presidential hopeful Obama will move to the 80,000-seat Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Colonial Center, the original site for the rally, wasn't big enough, they said.
"People are literally camping at the (Obama headquarters) door to try to get tickets," Inez Tenenbaum, former state superintendent of education and an Obama volunteer, said at a news conference Wednesday.
The free event might be worthy of the record books.
"It may be the biggest crowd for a political candidate in South Carolina's history," said Jack Bass, a political scientist at College of Charleston who said Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's visit to Columbia in 1952 during his run for the presidency might be one of the other contenders.

South Carolina: Clinton 36% Obama 34%
rasmussenreports.com
New York Senator Hillary Clinton's lead over Illinois Senator Barack Obama in South Carolina's Presidential Primary has disappeared. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race shows Clinton with 36% of the vote while Obama is the top choice for 34% of the state's Likely Primary Voters. A month ago, Clinton had a ten-point advantage. In September, the former First Lady was up by thirteen points.
...
Two trends in the South Carolina data mirror national trends.
First, Obama's overall level of support has remained relatively steady while Clinton's has declined. Nationally, Clinton's support among likely Democratic Primary Voters has fallen to its lowest level in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.
Second, Obama's showing has improved significantly among black voters. He now attracts 51% of the African-American vote in South Carolina while Clinton picks up just 27%. A month ago, the candidates were even in this important constituency (Obama 46%, Clinton 45%). There is virtually no movement among white voters in the state--Clinton now earns 43% of the white vote, Edwards 22%, and Obama 17%.
In the South Carolina survey, African-Americans constitute 49% of Likely Democratic Primary voters.
Among women in South Carolina, Clinton leads Obama by eleven but Obama leads by ten among men 47% to 34%.

Schwarzenegger to make 'major' redistricting announcement
December 3, 2007 - This morning, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to make what's billed as a "major announcement" with backers of a redistricting initiative aimed for the November 2008 ballot.
Schwarzenegger has made an overhaul of redistricting -- the process in which the Legislature draws political district boundaries -- one of the aims of his governorship.
He supported Proposition 77, a redistricting measure that would have given the power to draw legislative districts to retired judges, during the 2005 special election, but that measure was defeated by voters.
The latest proposal is headed by California Common Cause, AARP and the League of Women Voters, among others.
While one of the most overused axioms in California politics is that the "devil is in the details," the platitude is particularly true for redistricting.
The most notable feature of the California Voters First proposal is that the plan does not include congressional seats, a provision which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has opposed.
Proponents of the measure offer a summary of who would draw district lines here. ...full story: http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/cap...
SacBee Capitol AM Alert: Oil-spill bills
Assembly Democrats will roll out legislation today in response to last month's oil spill in the San Francisco Bay.
Bay Area Assembly members Loni Hancock, Sally Lieber, Mark Leno, Ira Ruskin and Jared Huffman will present their package at a San Francisco press conference.
They'll be overlooking the bay, of course.
Not to be outdone, five Senate Democrats sent a letter Wednesday to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger requesting the state auditor conduct an investigation into the spill.
Latest USA/Gallup poll showing Dennis Kucinich in an upward trend.
His appearances in the debates, and strong progressive support at the grassroots are beginning to get his message to the voters, and they like what they hear.
The latest numbers since last polling show an increase from 1% to 4%, ahead of Dodd and tie with Richardson and Biden. Except for not being in pretty wrappings, he is the life time Holiday wish package for progressives. Help Dennis win! dennis4president.com

More Americans in the lower tax brackets will now be paying hundreds of dollars more in taxes. Republican have just managed to actually raise taxes, but or course not for those to should have their taxes increased.
Thank you John. Great idea to leave the "Lights Out".
Maybe our country can start a campaign: Lights out for Christmas; in the dark until our policy changes.
Until our country leaves Iraq, adopts a change in policy in energy which the main cause in Global Warming and the reason for our attack and occupying Iraq, sign the Kyota Treaty, invest in Renewable Energy, our trees stay dark.

Joan in fl......
I heard Harry Reid say yesterday, that he had no problem with the 60 vote rule. It's almost like he hasn't figured out that that's the reason we lose. why does he keep offering it, I wonder.
Picture this:
Several weeks ago our Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, trying to lead Fla in effort to fight global warming, proposed radical changes in the way Fla utilities generate electricity, opposing any more coal-fired and coal gasification power plants.
But, our electric cooperative is complaining because it may cause our bills may go up! They state, "The days of paying $95.00 for 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity will be long gone."
Wow! Here is a Republican governor trying to do a little bit of the right thing, and a co-op (non-profit) electric company is complaining about it.
Looks like fighting global warming is going to be a long, hard fight. Nobody should object to paying more for clean power. In this case our coop helps those who cannot afford to pay.
I'm just saying HI before I go back to class. Today's the last day of school. Yea!!!!! I'm glad they are stopping the interests rates b/c the economy may have gone in a freefall, but I do think it is unfair to those who prudently got a fixed rate mortgage. I hate when they change the rules in midstream. To me it's just like illegal migrants (is that PC?). Those who have come here 'by the book' and are waiting for citizenship should not have to sit by and watch those who didn't get a free lunch. (How's that for mixed metaphors?) See y'all later.
Please vote this poll:

GWB is giving a speech on CNN about mortgage help. He says Congress needs to pass his proposed bill re: FHA.
The Republicans in the Senate have already said they will filibuster it.
I guess Bush forgot to send the Senate Repugs an email as to his position. Disconnect!!! Nothin' new there.
"Looks like fighting global warming is going to be a long, hard fight. Nobody should object to paying more for clean power. In this case our coop helps those who cannot afford to pay."
And where would the Coop get the money to cover for those who can not afford to pay? By raising rates for those that actually pay for the services they receive. Unless of course they have a printing press in the back. It is like asking the grocery store or the gas station or the daycare center to give away their products or services for free. It would increase the prices for everyone else, including those that are just making it now. And then they will not "be able to afford it" And then they will want it for free and on and on it goes. We are the only country in the world in which the least among us have a greater obesity rates than the more affluent. And they are likely are talking on their cell phones. I witness this at the Food Bank every other Wednesday where I volunteer.

Because this is a forum for political discussion, and I'm interested in what people know about candidates. John said he only cares about policy agendas, whereas I think judging a presidential contender requires much more. Otherwise, why wouldn't this whole community have chosen Kucinich over Dean in 2004?
You call what FiReFoX witnessed firsthand an old false rumor. If you have met with him at length or worked with him personally, you're in a position to provide your own credible refutation but if not, I'm uncertain why I should disbelieve her.

I have an enormous amount of respect for Michael Moore, but that doesn't mean that I agree with his 2004 statement that "Howard Dean is an arrogant little prick".

THE EYES OF A MADMAN
http://www.opednews.com/maxwrite/linkframe.php?linkid=46975
Hunters know all too well the look that spilled out of our television sets like political diarrhea Tuesday: The look of a cornered animal, the most dangerous time to face a desperate predator.
You saw it in the eyes of George W. Bush, America's too-often discredited President, caught in yet another lie.
Faced with a damning National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) that destroyed his outlandish claims of a threat of World War III from Iran, Bush did what he always does - dug in and faced down his pursuers with bluster, anger and defiance.
The George W. Bush that faced reporters and the television cameras Tuesday was a cornered, dangerous predator, determined to fight back until the bitter end even as time, and escape routes, run out.
George W. Bush is no less than a traitor to his country. He is a man without honor, a leader without conscience and a human being without a shred of decency or humanity. He is a despot who considers himself above the law and a President who considers the Constitution he swore to uphold to be just "a goddamned piece of paper."
He wants, more than anything, to invade Iran before his term is up. Even now, with his ludicrous claims of a nuclear threat from that nation destroyed by his own intelligence community, he sticks to his saber-rattling rhetoric.
Watch replays of his press conference from Tuesday.
Watch his face, his actions and his body language.
Most of all look at his eyes.
They are the eyes of a cornered dangerous animal.
They are the eyes of a madman.
I missed the news about tamoxifen. I was on it 5 years. Good grief.

Conyers, I still say, is a sell out and I read all his reasons and excuses for not impeaching....not enuf time, not enuf votes, a failure to indict would exonerate putz, not having time for other peoples' business, (which they're not getting done in a meaningful way -). He's doing sleight of hand and trying to fool us.
And Harry is a Hillary fan?
Pissing off your progressive base is a good way to lose the election to a guy who looks mild and believes the earth is 5,000 years old. FGS, (fer god's sake) half the american people believe in the devil. It's simple to fool them.

IS THE IRAN NIE A TROJAN HORSE?
This post, written by Russ Wellen, originally appeared on Scholars & Rogues
The Iran NIE has elicited a range of emotions in those opposed to the Bush administration's policies from gloating
to discreet celebration. In the minds of many, it's like V-Day: Let the church bells peal, kiss a girl in Times Square. Others, particularly Iranian commentators located in the US, are considerably less sanguine.
They fear, as Farideh Farhi writes at Juan Cole's spin-off, Informed Comment: Global Affairs, that the NIE can "easily become an instrument in support of the Bush Administration's current policy."
In fact, according to Kaveh Afrasiabi at Asia Times Online, "The temporary freeze on the military option [resulting from] the new intelligence report has nested within it its exact opposite." In other words, a Trojan horse.

Good for Ed Schultz having Dennis Kucinich on his show again today. He said his listeners love it when he does. When asked about his media coverage, Dennis said that he's not a cynical man, but it doesn't help him much that one of the networks is a munitions manufacturer, lol. That would be GE.
Schultz said he couldn't understand how Dennis is so right on all the issues, that he should be higher in the polls. Dennis said he is making an effort in NH and is starting to show some results. Go Dennis. dennis4president.com

Subject: The biggest week of my life
Dear Susan,
Thanks for standing with me in the fight against global warming!
Yesterday, by an 11-8 vote, the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee passed America's Climate Security Act, the world's most far-reaching global warming program -- critical legislation that would cut greenhouse gases below 1990 levels by 2020 and slash emissions by nearly 70% by 2050.
It may sound like an exaggeration, but it's true: This has been the biggest week of my life. I'm so grateful to all of you who stood with me and helped us reach this moment.
With yesterday's vote, America has taken a huge step towards showing real leadership on the critical issue of climate change. That's the message we're sending to a United Nations conference in Bali this week, where more than 10,000 participants from nearly 190 countries are meeting to work towards a new international agreement to fight global warming. The world has waited long enough for America to act, and I'm so gratified that yesterday we took a giant step forward.
Now our bill heads to the Senate floor for consideration. We've still got a lot of work to do to convince enough of my colleagues to support this critical bill and get the 60 votes we'll likely need to overcome a Republican filibuster. Over the coming weeks, I'll be asking for your help once again as we work to pass our bill in the full Senate.
But for now, I just want to thank all of you who spoke out and supported me in this fight over the past 10 months. In just the past few days alone, our community sent more than 12,000 emails and made more than 4,000 phone calls to EPW Committee members. That strong support made a real difference as my colleagues and I assembled in the hearing room on Wednesday, showing us clearly that the American people are standing with us in this fight.
I'm so proud of what we accomplished yesterday. Passing the world's most far-reaching global warming program through the EPW Committee and sending it to the full Senate is a huge milestone. We couldn't have done it without your support.
Thanks again for standing with me and helping America lead the fight against global warming.
In Friendship,
Barbara Boxer
U.S. Senator
Can someone please tell me how to get streaming video on my MAC? A friend just called and she wants it also and neither of us have a clue how to do it. We'd like to hear Dennis later if possible.
Thanks in advance. :-)
Show NH and the rest of the country how much you agree with Dennis Kucinich on the issues
He's electable if you want him to be, just like the others. Independent voters are not all from the center, not being able to decide which direction to fall. I believe most Independents are right where Progressives are.
Show them how much we like Dennis.....

Mike Huckabee appeared on CNN to explain why he was caught by reporters Tuesday when asked about the newly released National Intelligence Estimate report on nuclear weapons in Iran. Huckabee told reporters he was unaware of the new intelligence estimate. His lack of awareness about the events of the day has since become a talking point and caused Huckabee his share of embarrassment. This gaffe came during a week where his name has already been all over the news due to allegations regarding his role in the release of a serial rapist while he was governor of Arkansas.

How one person dealt with someone selling burial plots. She was glad they called because she just came from the Dr. who told her she had an incurable brain tumor and she was at the moment preparing to commit suicide. The cop who showed up at her door in a few minutes had a good laugh when she told him.
Another call was promoting a carpet cleaning company. She again told them how happy she was that they called, because she'd been working all day frantically to get rid of the stains in her carpeting. Blood was all over the house splattered everywhere after the doings last night.
She said they usually let out a scream and she doesn't hear from them again.

Here's a link to the FDA's Executive Summary on Tamoxifen and 2D6. (Clicking this link will download a .PDF.)
In concert with the hearing, DNA Direct is launching our first drug metabolism test: 2D6 testing with personalized test results interpretation for tamoxifen. (Testing can be ordered online at the Genes&Drugs website.) Below is DNA Direct's backgrounder, which explains the test, the research and why we're offering 2D6 Tamoxifen testing to certain patient populations.
TAMOXIFEN & 2D6 BACKGROUNDER
Recent research on tamoxifen has shown that potentially up to 7-10% of women with breast cancer may not receive the full medical benefit from taking tamoxifen, because of their unique genetic make-up. These women have a special version of a gene (CYP2D6, commonly referred to as 2D6), which may reduce the effectiveness of tamoxifen and increase their chance of breast cancer recurrence. With over 500,000 women currently taking tamoxifen, this research has wide-reaching implications.
FDA and Tamoxifen: What's Happening?
Given the recent research, the FDA has taken action and is closely examining the clinical evidence regarding 2D6 genotype as an indicator of tamoxifen efficacy. The FDA’s Clinical Pharmacology Subcommittee is scheduled to review the research and the package insert for tamoxifen on October 18, 2006 in Washington, D.C. The Subcommittee will then decide whether to recommend revising the tamoxifen label to include information about 2D6 testing for post-menopausal women considering tamoxifen therapy.
Why Hasn’t This Information Come Out Before?
The decoding of the human genome has made it possible to explore disease and treatment through a new, molecular lens. Although tamoxifen has been in use for over two decades, it has only recently been possible to research the genetic relationship between the drug and the 2D6 gene. In fact it was just last June that important new information was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
The tamoxifen news is troubling. We desperately need stem cell research.
Please impeach the monsters, NOW! And let's get on with the business of health, education and welfare.
Do I need to register or pay someone to get streaming video? At a loss here....
John wrote "I have a great deal of respect for Firefox, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything she says."
Does this mean you are not agreeing with her, or you don't care even if it's true?
seashell, thank you.
No, I'm not on Tamoxifen. I decided against taking it. I had every single Doctor pushing me to take it, but from what I was reading, it showed I shouldn't. If anything, just on one area, Tamoxifen redirects estrogen to other parts of the body, away from the breasts, it's not a blocker as they market it. I read that for that reason alone, anyone who was put on Estrogen only previously to their Breast Cancer, Tamoxifen would increase their chances of uteran cancer by 440percent. That was me. When they removed my active ovary, they put me on Estrogen only.
When I told them what I found, and it was the day I had to decide to start taking it, for 5 years, the Doctor then when and did my "percentages" on the computer and it showed it would have only improved my chances of reoccurence by .66 percent. not 66 percent, .66 percent. Hmmm .66 percent improvement of not getting a reoccurence ...to 440 percent chance of uteran cancer..........tough choice, I think I say NO. :)
OK, I've googled streaming video and I'm tearing out my hair. Doesn't anyone here use it?
Firefox seemed to have a personal objection, based on personality at some event, you can take it the same as the read I take from the likes of Chris Dodd as he and I have had a conversation about the Constitution and the oath Senators take. Or that John Edwards speaks the truth now even though the words differ from his votes when he was in the Senate. My personal take.based on face to face interaction
seashell, I wish I could help you. So many people are using programs for set browsers, IE, etc. Mac has some specific programming that won't allow communicating with others.
I used to always stream Air America, then I started having problems afte they went through a change and I could only stream in IE.
Some require a specific install, like Real Time, but they usually tell you.
I don't use Mac, so I don't know any specifics in that regard. Ask Monica...she uses Mac, right?
OH, wait...I have a friend here who is a whiz on computers and programming and she uses a Mac...I'll email her and ask if she can give any insight.

Is this an apocryphal story? I'm not aware of any occasion when Moore has made derogatory statements about Dean.
There's a new thread in town.
You use it, you pay for it. Junk science is scary in the hands of irresponsible voters who's world is no bigger than there limited judgement. This planet spits out more CO2 all by itself every year than us puny little humans could ever dream of. But along the lines of the enlightened Hollywood celebritee who espouse not washing ones hair or using just one sheet of toilet paper all in the name of saving the planet from ourselves, I have some ideas.
Ban all carbon dioxide from soft drinks or better yet, print all home appliance manuals in English only. Then we'd have plenty of guilt-free toilet paper for the masses of a......
I just sleep better every night with all of you "progressives" out there looking out for us poor, dumb evil conservatives' best interests. We'll just keep doing what we do - make the world run, and you all can keep doing what you do - run around with your hair on fire!
Just scares the bejeebers outta you, doesn't it, John. All of us "right" thinkers ganging up on you, you, wait a minute. What was it again you lefties believe in? Oh, I forgot. It's all about YOU!
Let's just say that after 4 years of Carter and the 55mph speed limit, the "Misery Index", 14% APR car and home loans and oh yeah, Z Bigs capitualation to the Iranians, Reagan was the quintessential shining light at the end of the dark Carter tunnel.
As bad as it was, we were still on his side. He was our President. We did not denigrate him after the failed hostage rescue crisis, we prayed for him and his family every day and we even obeyed the 55mph speed limit (well, mostly).
The thing I don't get about this new cadre of social progressives is the visseral hatred for George W. Bush. Yes, he has made mistakes. Haven't we all. But he is our sitting President. You can kook it up all you want with conspiracy theories of unmarked black Haliburton oil tankers lined up in downtown Baghdad or carefully placed TNT on 9/11/2001 but the fact remains, W is the man.
I'm just thankful Carter wasn't in office on 9/11.
