"The Shock Doctrine" The Nation interviews Author Naomi Klein
Linked to groups: DFA Books

From Peter Rothberg, Email Nation - Nation columnist Naomi Klein's new book, The Shock Doctrine... vividly argues how what Klein coins disaster capitalism -- the rapid-fire corporate re-engineering of societies reeling from shock -- traces its origins to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, and saw early expression in Chile in the mid-1970s when Friedman advised Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
Not only were Chileans in a state of shock following Pinochet's violent overthrow of Socialist President Salvador Allende; writes Klein in the November 26 issue of The Nation, the country was also reeling from severe hyperinflation. Friedman advised...impos[ing[ a rapid-fire transformation of the economy--tax cuts, free trade, privatized services, cuts to social spending and deregulation. It was the most extreme capitalist makeover ever attempted.

The Shock Doctrine
A Short Film by Alfonso Cuarón and Naomi Klein, directed by Jonás Cuarón.

When I finished The Shock Doctrine, I sent it to Alfonso Cuarón because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists -- including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited -- to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated. ~ Naomi Klein
Klein will be speaking in Miami, Minneapolis, Los Angeles (with Robert Greenwald), Portland, Oregon and Denver in early December. Click here for details.
Susan,
Wow. what a diatribe Mr. French wrote. I will only post the last part here with a question:
French wrote: The United States of America and it's rock-ribbed conservatives will continue to protect you and all of us so we may continue to have this civil discourse. Gob Bless America!
IndySteve: Who's Gob?!
Do you think this book review may have possibly pushed any of Mr. French's buttons?
Sorry about that whole "Gob" thing, Steve, Susan.

By Tim French on Nov 28, 2007 8:21 PM ESTOnce again, the United States of America is portrayed as "the bad guy" by another liberal apologist. Even as al-Qaida has declared Iraq as their 'central front' on the war against the free people of this planet, Ms. Klein sounds as if she is ready to default to the head-choppers.
I agree it has not been pretty in Iraq, but as 500 Iraqi exiles are leaving Damascus daily for their hometowns in Iraq, I think you all must agree we have reached a turning point. If our current doom-and-gloom media would have been following our soldiers and Marines around during WW II, we'd all be speaking German now. My point is, we are there now. You can carry on about WMD, yellow cake, Valerie Plame(give me a break), Abu Ghraib, et al but that doesn't change the here and now. If you libs would have been on the side of right from the beginning, we'd have been home by now.
There is NO denying that a world without Sadam and his two reprobate sons is better world. Can you imagine Sadam trying to keep up with 'Little Adolph' next door in Iran now with the nuke situation. And ask the new brides in Iraq that no longer fear Uday stopping by the reception for his little tryst with the bride. How come N.O.W never weighs in on these attrocities! Shame on all of you!
I don't understand why liberal Jewish Americans, as is Ms. Klein, are at odds with the Judeo-Christian Right that is carrying out the nasty job of protecting them from a fate worse than death at the hands of Muslim extremists. I suppose you most first acknowlege that there are still anti-Semitic forces on this planet that seek the total anhilation of both Christians, Jews and any other group or organization that doesn't buy into their intolerence.
And if all this isn't enough drive you 'progressives' nuts, check out the U.N. mandate to keep foreign troops in Iraq. Remember, the battle for Iraq began because of Sadam's 12 years of nose-thumbing at the U.N. Finally, to Miss Naomi, I think Sadam wrote the book on shock (see his torture methods on raping and slitting the throats of children as their parents were forced to witness before being slaughtered). The United States of America and it's rock-ribbed conservatives will continue to protect you and all of us so we may continue to have this civil discourse. Gob Bless America!
