Come to Environmental Action 2007 on Nov. 17
Linked to groups: Central Vermont DFA Link Up
This is a great opportunity to get some training and network with likeminded folks from around the state. I will be co-leading a workshop on grassroots fundraising with Ginny Callan from New England Grassroots Environment Fund.Follow the links below for all the information and feel free to call or email me with any questions. The fee for this day-long conference (which includes lunch) is only $20 in advance, $25 at the door and there are discounts for 3 or more folks who are part of the same organization or group. So we could turn this into a CVTDFA outing and save money too!
Hope to see you there

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers
There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it
We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it
There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it
Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong
Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it
This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it
And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it
I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it
We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it
This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it
Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

I’ve been saying for some time that Pakistan is the most complex country we deal with – and that a crisis was just waiting to happen. On Saturday night, it did.
President Musharraf staged a coup against his own government. He suspended the constitution, imposed de-facto martial law, postponed elections indefinitely, and arrested hundreds of lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists. He took these steps the day after Secretary Rice and the commander of all American forces in the region appealed to Musharraf not to take them.
America has a huge stake in the outcome of this crisis – and in the path Pakistan follows in the months and years to come. Pakistan has strong democratic traditions and a large, moderate majority. But that moderate majority must have a voice in the system and an outlet with elections. If not, moderates may find that they have no choice but to make common cause with extremists, just as the Shah’s opponents did in Iran three decades ago.
But unlike Iran, Pakistan already has nuclear weapons.
It is hard to imagine a greater nightmare for America than the world’s second-largest Muslim nation becoming a failed state in fundamentalist hands, with an arsenal of nuclear weapons and a population larger than those of Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea combined.
To prevent that nightmare from becoming a reality, I believe we need to do three things:....
(much more)
This is my week to be irritated with Harry Reid. I don't understand his strategy at all. Sometimes I wonder about the leadership in the Senate. Several things, including something odd he said in 2005....guess it shows what he thinks of us who are pro-choice women:
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1633
" "We have had a lot of pro-life Democrats, but the pro-choice folk haven't reached out to them and haven't protected them."
He acknowledged some complaints from abortion rights groups about the party's shifting rhetoric. "They have to keep their folks geared up, just like people who work for more highways," Mr. Reid said. "That is what they do, just like the pro-life groups."
So we women are like people who want more highways...just another group to put up with?
And be sure to read what Glenn Greenwald wrote today about the 60 vote rule.....it sort of disappeared on the Mukasey deal.
What happened to the Senate's "60-vote requirement"?

Susan, I don't normally watch it either, but last night. It airs on NBC THursday nights. Time for me was 7:30PM, for you I think 8:30...or 6:30...you'll have to double check,
But here is the clip with Al Gore

Today, I’m going to write about a slur. It’s a distortion that’s been around for a while, but has spread like a weed over the past few months. It was concocted for partisan reasons: to flatter the prejudices of one side, to demonize the other and to simplify a complicated reality into a political nursery tale.

The Reagan library was interesting. The best parts were seeing the view - it is breathtaking - reminds me of Hearst castle. Also very poignant clip of Caroline and JFK Jr all grown up and being greeted by Reagan in the Oval. Inside of Air Force One (they have the old Air Force One there) was somewhat interesting but looked like the old West Wing scenes. Apparently they have a new exhibit for Nancy w/ 80 of her outfits. THAT would have interested me. I haven't missed one of these yet, but next week will be difficult -- GHW Bush eeeeaaaauuuuuugggghhhh!!!!! In a way I'll be glad when the series is over so we get Brian back on Friday mornings.
Paine, thanks for checking in and for the music.
Here's one for Pat (and all other disgusted ones) about a bill Kennedy is introducing to ban waterboarding.

Doncha all feel comfy cozy with putzie in charge during this Pakistan crisis? Me neither.
Åccording the Mushaffaf, the aid promised to fight terrorism never arrived.
Your racist congress and BH at work again.
the block
I saw that Arshad Hasan made note of the clock
Arshad, fix it! ...and the community will be grateful. (atleast continue to speak here at BFA)
Today, I’m going to write about a slur.
The GOP Ministry of Truth continues to rewrite history. No dirty little loose end is too far in the past to escape their diligent attention in the beatification of St. Ronald.
Åccording the Mushaffaf, the aid promised to fight terrorism never arrived.
But there is miraculously $11b extra to fight India!
What happened to the Senate's "60-vote requirement"?
Democrats misplaced it and now can't find it.
(hint: It's in the same place they left their scruples and spines!)
"to demonize the other and to simplify a complicated reality into a political nursery tale'
David Brooks, you insolent slut!
The southern strategy and Regan at Philadelphia, Mississippi is the reality you want to disassemble. To hell with your silver forked tongue.

Sunni chiefs killed in Iraq blast
Five Sunni Arab tribal leaders have been killed in a suicide attack in Iraq's Diyala province, police say.
A suicide bomber detonated his explosives belt in the house of Sheikh Faez al-Obeidi, killing him and four of his relatives.

This is one resilient guerrilla force we're faced with. Like the NLF guerrillas in Vietnam, they seem to absorb the most punishing attacks by us yet they return even stronger. I would have thought that after two Fallujahs and the minimal surge that they would have been defeated and would have surrendered by now. But no, they seem to be far from surrendering.
In this particular case, I wonder if members of the Diyala Awakening, or whatever its called, are infiltrated by AQI....kinda like the Iraqi national police being infiltrated with Shiite militia members. If thats the case, I say its a mistake to arm these so-called Awakening groups because, in the end, we're just going to increase the carnage after we're gone.
Well, like I've always said, Quagmires are difficult to wage. While its easier to involve ourselves in these foreign adventures, its really difficult to extract ourselves. It didn't take long to storm ashore at Da Nang and blitzkrieg through Iraq, but once we get bogged down in unconventional combat we don't look insurmountable. Then, you have presidents determined not to lose these struggles and end up prolonging them at extraordinary cost in money and blood. The Vietnam Was was a humiliating and frustrating conflict to prosecute and, a generation later, the Iraq War is following in its footsteps.
I, for one, will not chastize the four for not voting (which is a vote against) Mukasey

Would you surrender if they invaded and occupied your country?
They never will, even a century from now.
<>its really difficult to extract ourselves.
Only if one buys into the fallacy that staying makes anything better in the short or long run.
I, for one, will not chastize the four for not voting (which is a vote against) Mukasey
That's the beauty of the non-vote (i.e. cop out); it can interpreted according to desire.
One thing's for sure. They're in no position to ever criticize him since they didn't even show up to vote against torture and violation of the Constitution which he now represents and will implement in Bush's name.
$11b extra to fight India!
I either know or think that weapons sold by US
have access codes which WE can use to
lock on and destroy,
but don't quote me.
Friend or foe?
I either know or think that weapons sold by US
have access codes which WE can use to
lock on and destroy,
I think that's only in the movies -- or the world of Reagan.
Just a little remembering about Dean's plans for the DNC, Kind of helps me keep my spirits up to read it.

"As I watched what was happening in state party after state party, I realized there was no way I could indulge thoughts of leading a third party when the people whose ideas I trusted and whose energy I relied on were working within the system to strengthen the Democratic Party. If these activists were really bringing about change in the Democratic Party from the grass roots up, it might just be possible for me to help them by working to change the party from the top down.

Dean gets kudos for his work to build a strong liberal grassroots within the party.
But if the top of the party is DCDems, I'm afraid he's been a dismal failure at changing them. Far too many are still the same craven and corrupt capitulators of the years when Republicans ran the joint.
