PHONEBANK FOR ANDREW WHITE OCT.30 AT CITIZEN ACTION

Written by: Carol Olszewski on Oct 28, 2007 7:51 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy for the Hudson-Mohawk Region

Andrew White, our wonderful longtime past President, is running for Supervisor of Stephentown, a small rural and very Republican town in the 20th CD. He heeded the call of Howard Dean to run for local office and became a member of the Town Council of Stephentown-now he is making the turning of Stephentown blue complete by running for Supervisor! Let's all come out and help Andrew in this very important and symbolic election.

Come to Citizen Action at 94 Central Avenue, Albany, at 5:30 or as soon thereafter as you can get there this Tuesday, October 30, to phonebank for Andrew. Let's help him win!

Carol

In case you haven't noticed, the letter from Chris Dodd has gone out.

Dear DFA Member,
The Military Commissions Act. Warrantless wiretapping. Shredding of Habeas Corpus. Torture. Extraordinary Rendition. Secret Prisons.
Enough is enough.
You may have heard that I've placed a hold on any legislation that includes "retroactive immunity" for telecom companies that helped the Bush Administration spy on Americans.
And if it comes down to it, I'll filibuster.
This might not be customary, but my ask isn't that you vote for me in the Pulse Poll, it is that you let Democracy for America HQ know how you feel about our fight to restore the Constitution and preserve the rule of law.
So vote in the poll, and in the "optional" comment field, send a message encouraging DFA to join the fight on FISA today.
http://www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/VoteDodd
I've been supported in this effort by MoveOn, the ACLU, Glenn Greenwald, Atrios, the team at Firedoglake, Open Left, the Daily Kos community and countless other bloggers and organizations across the country on the issue of restoring our Constitution.
There is a hearing on retroactive immunity before the Senate Judiciary Committee in two days, in fact.
We're getting closer to stopping this bill, and DFA's support might be the factor that pushes us over the top.
Ask DFA to get involved in the fight by voting in the Pulse Poll and sharing your request in the optional comment field.
http://www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/VoteDodd
I'd like to see a little more spine, frankly, on these issues. Candidates always tell us they want to lead, but a little leadership right now would certainly be welcomed on these questions.
We shouldn't have to wait to elect the next President before we finally show the courage to stand up to the grave mistakes made by this one.
Thanks for your support,
Chris Dodd

Rep. Robert Brady Pa. D, again displaying spine. We called and thanked him for signing on to the Kucinich Hres. 333 to impeach Cheney, and now he has co-sponsored a bill to force a Pres. to come to Congress for war approval.

This bill was offered by Rep. Walter Jones NC. R. Remember Mr. French Fries? There are three Dems signing on, Bill Delahunt,Ma., Neil Abercrombie, Hi., and Rob't Brady, Pa. Two Repubs, Ron Paul, and Wayne Gilchrest,Md.

The European Parliament proposed last Wednesday that car advertisements in the European Union carry tobacco-style labels, warning of the environmental impact they cause.

Global warming may hit kids harder, pediatrics group says

What's this?
By Marilyn Elias, USA TODAY
Global warming is likely to disproportionately harm the health of children, and politicians should launch "aggressive policies" to curb climate change, the American Academy of Pediatrics said today.

In the first major report about the unique effects of global warming on kids, U.S. pediatricians also were advised to "educate" elected officials about the coming dangers.

There's evidence that children are likely to suffer more than adults from climate change, says the report's lead author, Katherine Shea, a pediatrician and adjunct public health professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

"We already have change, and certain bad things are going to happen no matter what we do," Shea says. "But we can prevent things from getting even worse. We don't have the luxury of waiting.

14.  Opera is free.  You can get it for windows.  Ditto for firefox--also free.

Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to remove IE because it's bundled into the operating system.  That's how microsoft tries to maitain a monopoly.  Much of the European community is turning to unix-based operating systems.  The soft-ware is free.  The way they make their money is by providing customer support for a fee.

The Big Con: Back with a vengeance by Rick Perlstein

I'll be writing more this week about the role of conservative ideology in the apocalyptic wildfires in California. For now, a sickening indication about how the conservative mania for privatization is beginning to create two Americas: one that is protected from fires, and one that is not. When Michael Moore was promoting SiCKO, he would ask why people accept a privatized healthcare system when they'd never accept a privatized firefighting system. Well, Michael spoke too soon. If you're rich enough to afford the right insurance, yes, you get private corporate firefighters. more: http://commonsense.ourfuture.org/big_con...

Hi! fellow bloggers.

Anyone on a dial-up might be intereseted in a really excellent deal on ebay.

Multitech USB connecting external Modem on ebay.  It is new in the box.

Multitech modems are the rolls royce of modems.  Made in the USA.  The start at $129.

The ebay deal is $29.95  + $7 S/H - new in the box.  There are only three left.  They had about 30 of them originally on this site.  I bought two.  One for my neighbor.  It is ebay item  280137400900 or try this link.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280137400900&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D280137400900%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1

The ad in ebay is incorrect.  It is ITU  V.44bis compression not V.42bis.  Multitech doesn't make a V.92 modem with V. 42 compression.

Multitech has great tech support.  No waiting in the USA.   This modem would be at least twice as fast as a soft modem.  It has all its own hardware and does not tax the computer CPU at all.

I thougt Phil might be especially interested.

The Detroit News reports this as the latest in the ongoing primary contretemps between national and Michigan Democrats.  The article includes an illuminating comment by the Chairmen regarding the four state pledge:

"The nation's top Democratic Party official said Sunday he believes the state and national parties can work out a solution to the sometimes bitter standoff over Michigan's Jan. 15 presidential primary.

"'Whatever differences there are, we continue to work to see if there's a solution,' said Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, before a fundraising dinner for Oakland County Democrats.

"'There are ways of working this out.'

"Dean said he wouldn't publicly reveal those discussions, but he and state party Chairman Mark Brewer said they talk regularly in hopes of resolving the dispute."

" . . . .

"Dean said he wanted to impress on Michigan Democrats that the national party had no role in promoting the anti-campaigning pledge demanded by the four approved early states.

"'We had no part in that, and frankly we were surprised by it,' Dean said.

"Asked if the candidates should be campaigning in Michigan, Dean said that was an issue for the campaigns to decide. The former Vermont governor said he expects changes in the 2012 nominating process, after widespread criticism of the heavily frontloaded 2008 calendar.

"'We understand the point Michigan is trying to make, and from our standpoint there's some sympathy,' Dean said. 'But the calendar moves by Michigan, Florida and other states came too late to fit into an orderly nominating process.'"

676t107993

-

By Tom Bearse on Oct 29, 2007 1:40 PM EDT

The Free Press has it's own article following the Chairman's visit:

"The Democratic National Committee understands the point Michigan legislators are trying to make by moving the state’s presidential primary to Jan. 15.

"'But if they would move it back, it would be enormously helpful,' said DNC chairman and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, before a speech to the Oakland County Democratic Party on Sunday night.

" . . . .

"Dean said Michigan hasn’t been sanctioned yet because the parties haven’t decided definitively if they’ll hold a primary on Jan. 15 or move the date back to February. The chairmen of both parties have said they intend to participate in the primary, but they have until Nov. 14 to make their intentions official with Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.

"'Our rules committee isn’t going to meet until late November,' Dean said. 'I’m hoping we can avoid sanctions.'

"Dean, who ran for president in 2004, characterized the primary election battle as a minor internal fight.

" . . . .

"And the points Michigan and Florida, which also moved up its presidential primary, are trying to make will make a difference in future elections, Dean said.

"'We’ve already had one change, adding other states early to the process,' he said. 'We understand the point and there’s a fair amount of sympathy in the DNC with that point.'"

Fearing Fear Itself

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Consider, for a moment, the implications of the fact that Rudy Giuliani is taking foreign policy advice from Norman Podhoretz, who wants us to start bombing Iran “as soon as it is logistically possible.”...

Mr. Podhoretz, in short, is engaging in what my relatives call crazy talk. Yet he is being treated with respect by the front-runner for the G.O.P. nomination. And Mr. Podhoretz’s rants are, if anything, saner than some of what we’ve been hearing from some of Mr. Giuliani’s rivals....

And Mike Huckabee, whom reporters like to portray as a nice, reasonable guy, says that if Hillary Clinton is elected, “I’m not sure we’ll have the courage and the will and the resolve to fight the greatest threat this country’s ever faced in Islamofascism.” Yep, a bunch of lightly armed terrorists and a fourth-rate military power — which aren’t even allies — pose a greater danger than Hitler’s panzers or the Soviet nuclear arsenal ever did....

Go Andrew!!! Kiss your free time goodbye...lol.

I had a discussion with a co-worker about politics and he said he could care less about politics because politicians aren't trustwothy, are only looking out for themselves and don't care about who they represent.

While I'm no politician, more of a political activist, I mentioned the time and money I donate in hopes of making things better for others. He said, "you don't get paid for being on the Democratic committee?"...this to someone who I explained why I do what I do to before. This distrust of politics is deeply engraved in many...how do we turn this around when the corporate media has tossed the public airways aside for the profit airways?

I was also hoping you folks could help me...I took some foliage pix and made a slideshow...they show up fine on my mac but a friend with a pc only sees a few of the pix...there should be about 20 pix. Could you let me know if the slideshow works on your puter and what browser you're using? Thanks...

Any comments on the Obama dust up? KOS has basically written Obama off. This is about the gospel singer and what he said about gays - all he said that I can find is that gay is a choice and God redeemed him from making the choice. Now I don't believe that for a moment. But a lot of southerners do, and a lot of black southerners do and this was a black southerner fund raiser. Not that that makes it right. I know folks down here who don't believe in evolution. I don't agree with them either. I thought the Dems were a big tent and there are already a lot of blacks in the big tent. And a lot of them believe homosexuality is a sin. This thing reminds me of the Howard scream. It's like championship ice skating - fall once - you are off the podium. Trouble is I just went to the Obama website and don't see a word on the incident. I do think he has only 24 hours and they are just about up.

When rdorgan gets back his candidate may be dust.

Guess Dodd is looking better and better?

Today, Stephen Johnson, United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator, will receive a letter signed by over 10,000 people demanding the reversal of EPA’s approval for the carcinogenic pesticide methyl iodide. The methyl iodide approval on October 5th, came in spite of a letter sent to Johnson by 54 distinguished chemists describing the deliberate release of methyl iodide into the environment as “astonishing,” and asking Johnson not to register methyl iodide....

Annilow wrote "Any comments on the Obama dust up? KOS has basically written Obama off."

I have to hedge somewhat in putting stock in the opinions of someone who states, for example, that "In 2003, it made sense for campaigns to build a strategy around the possibility that Dean would implode. I mean, Howard was a ticking time bomb. Every time I saw him about to speak, I would cringe and hold my breath, praying he said nothing damaging to the campaign."

There’s always plenty of criticism to go around when it comes to the views of any candidate who must ultimately go to the electorate to cobble together a voting majority in order to secure the election. People criticized Dean and Gore, probably rightfully, as much or more as any of their compeers or the present field of candidates. They weren’t perfect as candidates, just better.

However, the idea of writing off a candidate months before even a single caucus or primary vote has been tabulated represents to me the height of folly. Does Kos honestly mean to tell me that Obama’s campaign ship will have hit an iceberg even if he wins in Iowa? I only ask because his poll numbers are extremely competitive there compared to Kerry’s, which were abysmal at this time in 2003.

Here's what it boils down to.......

A gospel tour held over the weekend to raise money for the presidential campaign of Rep. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was criticized by homosexual groups because it included performances by an "ex-gay" minister who believes that sexual orientation is a matter of choice.

In other words....big deal.

an "ex-gay" minister who believes that sexual orientation is a matter of choice.

=================

It can be totally congenital or totally choice or varying combinations of both.  Then there is the issue of just "being" homosexual, and engaging homosexual intercourse.

But anyone who says it's all a matter of will is off-the-wall.   That's not even the case in heterosexuality.

'Sarko the American' storms off set in CBS interview
Nicolas Sarkozy called his own spokesman an imbecile and stormed out of a television interview as the strains of marital breakdown and trying to reform France took their toll on the notoriously quick-tempered French President.

A visibly exasperated Mr Sarkozy cut short the interview with CBS, the American network, ripping off his microphone and walking away when questioned about his marriage this month.

Last night  on PBS Nature - the Dwindling Honey Bee Population  - They said the stress on the insect ecology and pollenating insects, from insecticides and other pollution, has the potential to be worse than Global Warming.

For all we know, with the creeping growth of incidents of Chronic Degenerating Diseases among humans in developed countries, it could already be worse, but we haven't realized it yet, because we are not connecting the dots.  We are throwing 99% of our resources into diagnosis and finding "cures" that we are not looking at the sources of our morbidity.

I don't know that is a thorough explanation that you picked that up at.

The Gospel 3 city tour was criticized last week and asked to stop it. Obama campaign held an emergency conference call to try to stop the outrage of the headlined act who not only thinks being Gay is a choice, he was cured of it and his mission is to speak out againsst it. Apparently the effort continued and the conf call didn't go well with folks promising to protest outside.

The concert went on as scheduled and Mc
"“God delivered me from homosexuality,” he added. He then told the audience to believe the Bible over the blogs: “God is the only way.” The crowd sang and clapped along in full support.

“God delivered me from homosexuality,” he added. He then told the audience to believe the Bible over the blogs: “God is the only way.” The crowd sang and clapped along in full support."

and this account of the event is what is referenced.

"So, in the end, Obama let his "best" and "favorite" artist slam gays to thousands of African-Americans, in his name, and neither he nor his hand-chosen white gay preacher said anything in response. Class act, that Obama campaign. For them, creating a "dialogue" means the gay-basher gets to spread his bigotry to thousands while the candidate and the token gay STFU."

The idea of promoting religion, divisiveness and intolerance is hardly fitting to Obama campaign theme.

And even Andrew Sullivan former Bush Allie, the Obama writer/promoter was on Real Time Friday night saying he even wished Obama wouldn't be doing this, not because of McClurkins' intolerance to Gays, but the RELIGION.

As my hubby said, it used to be countries need freedom for Religion, it should be WE NEED FREEDOM FROM RELIGION.

The Gospel 3 city tour was criticized last week and asked to stop it. Obama campaign held an emergency conference call to try to stop the outrage of the headlined act who not only thinks being Gay is a choice, he was cured of it and his mission is to speak out againsst it.

If he preached it onstage at Obama's events, that would be wrong to ignore. But if he just sang, then his misplaced and misinformed scientific and social opinions are irrelevant to me.

I've never cared about the politics or religious views of entertainers (while they're entertaining) and won't start now.

AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE these brain and nerve toxins do to humans.  Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Lou Gherig's,  cancer,  incidents all seem to be on the rise.*

Incidence of disease rates not to be confused with "survival" rates, which is usually living for five years after one acquires the disease. Some drugs are increasing 5-year "survival"
