Can Pasadena become a 'city of justice?'
Linked to groups: DFA Pasadena
We often hear that we should think local in our politics. Pasadena resident, Peter Dreier (proud to say he lives on my block!), has an important essay out on the centrality of affordable housing, an involved citizenry with their city council, and a good public education system, to a socially just Pasadena community. Please read these links to find out more:
http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/print.php?id=18365
Here is a link to a report commissioned by the Pasadena Educational Foundation. It was written by Richard Kahlenberg, an educational consultant. The report pointed out that Pasadena has more world-class institutions colleges, museums, theaters, hospitals, and science-based businesses -- than any other city its size. If these institutions and the broader community got behind our public schools, there's no reason that PUSD couldn't be a first-class school system.
http://www.pusd.us/article.php?story=20060606114711995
Peter Dreier also recently wrote a feature story for the Pasadena Weekly titled, "Separate and Unequal: Nowhere in California is the gap between rich and poor greater than in Pasadena" Please give this a read. All three of these links get very specific about our community's challenges and hopes.

If you feel moved to get involved or are already involved on this issue, please contact us. Our leadership would like to involve YOU to take action in support of a more socially just Pasadena.

They "tamed" Governor Dean from talking out, they have chided Stark and Durbin, just plain condemned MoveOn. But they ccould not pull enough votes together to override the SCHIP veto. Something is wrong with that picture.

All this being so proper is hurting a party that should be coming together to confront and stand up to a man who once said it would all be so much easier if he were a dictator. It is sucking enthusiasm out of the room, and I don't think the party leaders in Congress even recognize what is happening.
We love ya Howard.
You should see the building that Judy Steinberg Dean has her physician's office in - it's an old creamery or something like that. Not your typical medical office building.
i've got about 1/2 the zappa collection on my ipod, including uncle meat.

And might I add how nice it was to see the excitement of folks being able to add their voice for their prefered candidate.
And Al Gore is getting the support from the people, with no help from HQ, not listing of his name anywhere on the ballot, no letter being emailed out to members asking for votes, and no posting of a letter from the candidate on the blog.
And we have every darn right to be happy about Al Gore getting such support, particularly as a write in, instead of some coming here to find a way to unjustly complain with attacks or false accusations and their rules, because their preferred candidate is not getting their post up at the right time of day, or that "other" was offered on the poll.

AP: Gravel out of Oct. 30 DNC debate by Elizabeth Cable
Published Saturday, 10/20/07 @ 03:50 am. Linked to Gravel for America.
According to an Associated Press Article, former Democratic Senator
from Alaska, Mike Gravel, is being excluded from yet another debate
(big surprise). It is the October 30th debate in Philadelphia, co-
sponsored by the Democratic National Committee and MSNBC. It is
essential, in a Democracy, for all voices to be heard. We should
continue to attempt to adhere to this Democratic ideal, so please
contact the DNC and MSNBC today about Mike Gravel's exclusion. And,
please, spread the word about this. Even people who are not Mike
Gravel supporters might help get Gravel re-invited to the debate, if
they value freedom of speech and fairness. Links to contacts, my
petition, and a live chat on this subject are listed below.

California fires kill one, shut down Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu
More than 1,200 acres charred near Malibu; 200 Malibu homes evacuated
At least 23 buildings in Malibu area damaged or destroyed, officials say
Castle Kashan, philanthropist Lilly Lawrence's landmark home, burns
(CNN) -- A series of wildfires Sunday in Southern California led to evacuations in some areas, and killed at least one person and injured eight others in San Diego County, according to officials.
At least 1,200 acres were scorched Sunday by wildfires in Malibu, California.

Four firefighters and four civilians were hurt in the southeastern part of the county, said Roxanne Provaznik, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The blaze, straddling Highway 94, scorched 2,500 acres and destroyed at least one structure, fire officials said.
Provaznik said the firefighters were hurt when flames engulfed their fire engine.
Fires shut down the Malibu section of the Pacific Coast Highway and damaged or destroyed at least 23 buildings, including a church, across 1,200 acres, officials reported.
Warning that the fire in Malibu is "zero percent" contained Sunday afternoon, Malibu Mayor Pro Tem Pamela Conley Ulich said, "We are at the mercy of the wind."
Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman's "best projection" is that the fire will last at least two days.
"Thousands of homes are going to be threatened at one time or another based on the movement of the fire," said Freeman.
About 200 homes were evacuated Sunday morning, said Inspector Rick Dominguez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

And we too have had the most incredible wind here this pas weekend. The weather doesn't seem to be calming down either. I hope they get a break.
I actually came out of the store this afternoon to.........SNOW FALLING in Santa Fe in October?????
Yikes Linda, SNOW Already! It was 80 here in Cincinnati today. Of course, as you well know, that can change rather quickly around here (though I think we will be in the 60's most of this week - but we are starting to make up for the lack of rainfall this summer).
I love seeing Al Gore's numbers so high in the poll - sure hope they stay there.
Lynn in Cincinnati
Lynn, ...yes I, no, WE ALL freaked. And it was blowing hard. It looked like a blizzard.
LOL..I just read Neil your comment about "80 here in Cinci..." and before I got to the rest, he said "just wait" ha, ha.
I too voted my last lesser of's...and will be voting Al Gore. Because, after all, if we feel this way, too will the rest of the country and if we held our nose while even trying to help, like the last time, enough of the ones we need to tilt the election, WON'T.
Lynn, I just realized, I'm wearing my Paul Hackett t-shirt under my sweater.
Love Fleetwood Mac. My first party in highschool was listening to Fleetwood Mac all night long and drinking Tequilla Sunrises'.
good memories.

If I was voting for county comish., then I might consider the "lesser of evils"
but not for POTUS. The risks of what a rethug American fascists Party could do to the fabric of MY United States is all too evident.
Let a Democrat POTUS nominate Kucinich to head a Department.
That's the lesser of evils, thank you very much.
Paul Hackett,
I haven't heard anything about him in awhile. I saw Susie at the vigil outside of mean Jean's office but didn't get a chance to say more than hello.
Tonight I saw a lawn sign for Ron Paul and it said "Independent 2008". I am mystified, since Paul has not yet declared a third party candidacy.
The sign was a professionally printed standard lawn sign.

Immediately after Tony Perkins announced the result of the FRC Action straw poll, in which Mitt Romney edged Mike Huckabee by 30 votes out of 5,775 cast, Huckabee boosters cried foul – and reporters peppered Perkins with questions about the legitimacy of the poll.
Turns out that Huckabee won a majority of the votes cast in person at the Values Voter Summit, 51 percent, and Romney only took 10 percent. Some unknown number of votes were cast online by people who also attended. But other votes were cast anytime online between August and Saturday. That’s how Ron Paul showed up in third place with 865 votes even though he was picked by only 25 in-person voters.

Paine, that matches what they were saying on George Steph today. Huckabee came across as a GOP Jimmy Carter (open, honet and saintly), and the evangelicals loved Jimmy until Reagan turned their heads four years later (how, I will never understand).

Paine, The Democrats are ignoring their base and the will of the people. They were put in power to end the war. They have the power. They won't use it.
So they're not quite as bad as the repugs. That to me is no reason to support them. If we come through for them again, they'll just get worse and more corrupt.
They need to be taken down a peg (or more). I'm rooting for Cindy to take down pelousy, and I'll certainly vote Green or Indy rather than support Levin, who puts Israel's interests ahead of Michigan's.
Great to see the numbers and percentages growing for Al Gore. Is this an open poll or do you have to be a D F A member to vote? I'd like to tell my friends about it. People need a vehicle to express their hopes and this poll is such a vehicle. Van Parker

.....APTN video showed three bloodied boys sitting on hospital tables and an elderly man being treated for a head wound. Mourners tied wooden coffins onto the tops of minivans with a plume of smoke in the background. Other footage showed a U.S. helicopter flying over the area while black smoke rose.

Once again, it must be asked how this new kind of war being fought in and around Iraqi neighborhoods is supposed to advance the counter-insurgency campaign. One could argue that we're increasing support for the guerrillas by these indiscriminate bombings of these populates areas.
Another argument could be....I thought there wouldn't be a military solution to the Iraq mistake. Well, if thats the case, why the constant indiscriminate bombings of these populated areas...be they Sunni or Shia?
Now, if we don't have the troops to enter these areas in sufficient numbers, why rely so heavily on air strikes? These kind of tactics never succeed and inevitably lead to heavy civilian casualties.
Someone needs to tell W that the war was lost before the first American boot touched down in Iraq. And no amount of air strikes on civilian population centers is going to change that. He will be the second American president to lose a war.
"I believe Gore has a responsitility to step up soon and tell voter and America what he intends to do."
Indy Steve
Well,
from past history it seems obvious that Americans like to vote for someone who is willing to break the rules.
If Al breaks the rule and doesn' t tell the voters his intent soon,
~I can live with that kind of rule breaking.

It's refreshing to attend a bloggers bash.

tell your friends that any friends of Al Gore are friends of DFA and they ought to sign up and join so they can vote in the poll
same goes for the other leaders in the poll if their supporters drop by
make sure you tell them that you have to write in Al Gore in the Other slot

I watched the first installment and it's pretty good -- I'm hooked for the series.
Barry M has a house in Malibu but I don't think it's where he lives mainly.
Good night good borgie.
If anyone but Gore is the nominee, I'm writing in Gore. Last time I did a write-in was 1968. Eugene McCarthy.

cut my hair and "came clean for Gene" before falling for Bobby just before he was shot, which pretty much radicalized me for a few years and I voted for the yippie pig after the Daley beat down

.....Within minutes, his cellphone began ringing. Several Iraqi informants told him the attack had originated near the decrepit school in al-Amil, recalled Frank, the battalion commander in the neighborhood. His sources agreed on another thing, too, he said: "There were several Iraqi police vehicles spotted leaving the scene."

Flushing BILLIONS down the toilet. So, we're training and arming the people who are taking us out.....be they Sunni or Shia.
now that I think of it a bunch of us guys shut down a selective service office with a sit-in before McCarthy even got in the race so I might have been a little radical before then lol

We watched and thought: "Have we really taught the British all of this?"
I loved the scene where they show what Mrs. Pritchard would like to have said to Bush.
The one place I felt they missed the mark was in what they wrote for Bush to have said. He doesn't know words that big! LOL!
Phil, The happy parents just conceived a new bunch. They are due Dec. 12th or 13th. They will be just the right age for the puppy division of the national UKC French Britt trials in April. Mamma dog hunts best when she is big as a house.
So the Red Sox are playing the Rockies? Is that a Colorado team?
I stopped paying attention in the 80's when the Sox blew the Series again...one too many losses for this Boston born woman. A couple of our kids are big fans and claim that Hubby and I aren't "true believers." But I rooted for Boston longer than they've been alive. What keeps me from getting excited about baseball anymore is that they just trade players all the time. I liked it better when the players were more regionally based. Ah well.
Rocks vs Sox ... Hmmm.
Hi listener...how's the color up north? It's picked up a bit down here and I took some nice photos today while on a trip to my daughter's house, a whole 20 miles...lol...I'll share later but have to hit the hay now. Again, sorry for missing the mini-blogger bash but glad Denise had you to show her around.
I christened a new thread for the overnighters...a first for me in a while.
