The "Republican" Netroots Movement
This has been cracking up everybody at DFA HQ all day, so I thought I'd pass it along:
In real news, check out DFA's Presidential Pulse Poll. The write-in votes for Al Gore are really starting to add up. He just overtook Clinton, and is moving up on Dennis Kucinich!
David wrote "Chris Dodd gets a strong honorable mention for his legislative hold on Congress' Amnesty fiasco."
Yes, but he's a corporatist.
freep this pollhttp://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/american.morning/
Fred wrote "Many who voted for the Iraqi Authorization thought it was not for an invasion, but for the use of military force to stand behind the inspections."
Spoken like a true junior senator from Massachusetts. However, we know this is jive, because Kerry and Edwards both spilled the beans and told us their authorization votes were stupid mistakes. Regretably, this type of insight tends to be more useful at the time the vote is actually cast.
It is, it's petty politics.

Getting tired of Democratic think tanks that stress national security over everything else.
You can't afford to be cocky. Here's a poll report dated January 11, 2004 from Salon:
"Howard Dean holds a slight lead in Iowa with just a week to go before the state's Democratic presidential caucuses and is maintaining his dominant position in New Hampshire, campaign polls out Saturday found.
"In Iowa, the former Vermont governor was at 30 percent, with Dick Gephardt at 23 percent and John Kerry at 18 percent, according to the Los Angeles Times poll of likely Iowa caucus goers. John Edwards, a North Carolina senator, was the only other candidate in double digits, at 11 percent.
"Dean does well among voters with higher incomes and among men in an Iowa electorate that remains fluid. Almost one in 10 were undecided, and four in 10 said they could still change their mind.
" . . . .
"A New Hampshire poll showed Dean holding a lead of about 20 points over his closest competitors. The poll done for the Concord Monitor by Research 2000 found Dean with the support of 34 percent, with Clark at 14 percent and Kerry at 13 percent. Others were in single digits."
Sitka,
Did you say something about people holding to their principles?

True that - I was judging the behavior, rather than the individual.
The behavior was very anti-corporatist.
A Connecticut shout out to Justin P.
floridagal, the worst part is most of the Democratic candidates, most notably the Corporate Media/pundits "top tier" candidates, signed on to that long ago. Which is why they wouldn't say if they promised to have the troops out by the yea 2013.
Look, some even campaigned AGAINST using funds to end the war and interviewed that way, but they voted for it to appear in line.
What's a "corporatist"?

Charles, you're idea is commendable, but...what do you do if you don't like clinton, obama or edwards? I have problems with all three, for many of the same reasons, the big one being the reluctance to promise to leave Iraq before 2013. This is unacceptable.
Look at this everyone. WOOOOTTTTT!

How about a national poll, Zogby?
I have problems with all three, for many of the same reasons, the big one being the reluctance to promise to leave Iraq before 2013. This is unacceptable.

Edwards says troops are needed to protect the Embassy. I agree and sure wouldn't hold that against him. The alternative - Blackwater?
Is there any way we could send this pulse poll to both Al and Billary?
Bet the whole country would go similar to this poll, ya think?
Phil,I don't think we should even have an embassy there.
I guess I'm not alone telling the Edwards people I'm with them unless Gore comes in.

I already covered that in my first message proposing this approach. Here's the relevant quote from that message:
"if I like NONE of the majority vote-getters then my current vote will remain unchanged."

I also think a base in the north to keep Turkey out of Kurdistan might be a good idea.

It is my belief that the allocation of delegates to the nominating convention could be done with an elongated absentee ballot only election simultaneously in all Congressional Districts to properly align the actual people elected as delegates as pledged to support a given candidate so to win a majority one would need broad appeal.
much like a candidate will need to win an endorsement here
Hillary's campaign has received $52,000 "contributions" (bribes) from defense contractors.
Stinks of more war to me.
As much as I would like to have Gore I think he has his work cut out for him on global warming. This country is sitting on their hands while the N/S poles are melting before our eyes.
Even if ALL the contributors of CO2 and other pollutants stopped today, it would take many years to reverse the global warming.
Get out the message -- ABC = Anybody But Clinton!

The regional jet is supposed to be one of those nicer ones with more room. Something called Explus. Hope so. I don't do well in heavy turbulence.
I'm going to head over to the other terminal now and will check back if I'm able to get back on.
Thanks for the good vibes!!
besides Gravel and Kucinich to me Dodd is one candidate that understands how far Bushco has exceeded Constitutional legality.
Richardson is another.
I'm not sure the rest don't covet some of the powers, but Hillary was the first to demand a new war authorization vote.
It might pass but it would sure give us some primary targets.
Thanks Linda and Phil~!

And, as always, it is so very good to be here among friends. After 3 1/2 years of using that trite phrase - I should retire it probably.
106. I think the distinction has to be made between private persons snooping into other people's communications and the government doing it. The restrictions on government are greater because government can do more harm with the information. Government needs to be limited to the duties and responsibilities it has been assigned. In exchange for these limitations, the agents of government enjoy a presumption of competence. When they go into court, for example, law enforcement agents are presumed competent and objective on the basis of their credentials.
The agents of government are ruled by the law, but the law is different for them than it is for the private citizen.

When DFA asked all the candidates to explain our plans to end the Iraq war, I was the first to respond. When DFA asked for a second message about our plans to end global warming, I was the first to respond once again.
It was no accident. As a DFA member, I believe you deserve to know exactly what the candidates stand for, and our specific plans to bring about bold, transformational change.
Here's what an Edwards presidency would mean for America:
- CLEAN ELECTIONS: I'm serious about breaking the stranglehold of big money on our democracy. I'm the only leading candidate who has never accepted a dime from political action committees or federal lobbyists. And I'm the only leading candidate to accept public financing because I'm committed to walking the walk on clean elections starting today.
- OUT OF IRAQ: I will end the war in Iraq – period. I believe we should begin withdrawing combat troops immediately and will ensure that we have withdrawn all troops within 10 months—leaving no permanent bases behind. I will end the outsourcing of military operations to unaccountable private contractors. And unlike other candidates, I will never equivocate about a potentially endless military involvement in Iraq.
- UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE: I was the first candidate to release a detailed plan for universal health care, and I'm still the only leading candidate with a plan that truly guarantees care for everyone. My plan preserves choice by requiring the insurance companies to compete with a public plan (which may evolve toward a single-payer approach over time), reduces the cost for everyone, ensures every American is enrolled and prohibits any discrimination based on pre-existing conditions.
- SOLVING GLOBAL WARMING: I have the most aggressive plan of any leading candidate. I will lead a revolution in the energy economy to reduce carbon levels by 80% by 2050 and create over 1 million new jobs along the way. My global warming plan got more votes from MoveOn.org members than my two closest competitors combined.
- ECONOMIC FAIRNESS: I will lead a national effort to strengthen the middle class and end poverty in 30 years through reforms like raising the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2012, creating 1 million stepping stone jobs, bringing opportunity to rural America, and strengthening workers rights to organize. I am proud to have earned the official endorsement of labor unions representing over 2.2 million current and retired workers—more than any other candidate.
- SECURING THE VOTE: Every American deserves an absolute guarantee that their vote is counted as cast. That means every vote count must be verifiable by a hand count, with access for people with disabilities. And it means that unaccountable, partisan corporations must not be allowed to monopolize the voting process.
- BLUE STATES FROM COAST TO COAST: Poll after poll has shown I'm the one candidate who can really help turn America blue. I'm committed to helping local Democrats win office from Oklahoma to Maine, and to holding Congress accountable to our progressive vision.
If this sounds like the America you want to see as well, I need your help right now to make it happen.
If we win this Pulse Poll, we can show the media that active, grassroots progressives are ready to stand up for a campaign of substance and action. And we'll get to ask DFA members nationwide to roll up their sleeves and join the effort. That boost of energy will take us a giant step closer to transforming this bold vision into our shared reality.
Let's do it together.

How many votes would it take to get a photo of Howard Dean up on the DFA poll? Sheesh!
You can vote Al Gore all three but it doesn't actually change the count at all.
The live results and the potential DFA endorsement are based only on the first choice vote. The reason we ask for top three is to make the reporting the final totals... fun. The final results will be release as an interactive map. You will be able to see not just the national vote, but how the candidates did state by state. Also, If you click on a candidate you'll be able to see how it would affect the vote if that candidate dropped out. That's why we ask for your top three.
However, You have the power to vote for Gore in all three spots too. The choice is yours. We just won't get to know who you would vote for if he never jumps in.
By the way, it sure looks like he is about to claim first in the live stats. Very interesting. Do you think Al's watching?

Reading this great piece on liberalism....excerpts:
At the core of liberalism is the idea that each of us enjoys an equal right to freedom, but liberalism has never been solely about rights even as it has embraced a broader, more positive conception of freedom. Rights of personal and civil liberty imply that we are individually accountable for our own actions; rights to political liberty imply a civic responsibility to make democracy work; and rights to basic requirements of human development (such as education and a minimum standard of security) imply that we have obligations to one another, mutually and through our government, to ensure the conditions exist enabling every individual to live in dignity and have the opportunity for success in life. The central liberal project, I write, is "the effort to guarantee these freedoms and to create the institutions and forms of character that will lead a people to assume responsibility, not as an external burden imposed upon them, but from a force within."
Not Left for Dead Why red scare attacks on liberalism are red herrings. by Paul Starr
Yes, Charles R, Al Gore just took the lead. woOT!
And Charles C, I sure hope Al is looking...watching, hearing, reading and PLANNING!
more Paul Starr:
But translating these general aims into effective policies depends on evidence and experience. Modern liberalism emerged in Britain and America from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries often by trial and error, in response to a more democratic politics, the dislocations of industrial capitalism, and the crises of worldwide depression and war.
The enduring reforms (many were winnowed out along the way) did not sacrifice freedom for prosperity and power—but successfully reconciled the two. For example, unemployment insurance and other elements of Social Security have helped citizens preserve their independence as well as their dignity at moments when they are most vulnerable to becoming dependent and encouraged them to accept technological change, trade, and other sources of turbulence necessary for economic growth.
While expanding the state’s role, liberals confined it to limited but strategic purposes (avoiding, for example, the nationalization of industry favored by socialists) and insisted on stronger protections of civil liberties and an autonomous role for the press, science, and other civil institutions to keep state power in check.
Paul Starr:
The major liberal initiatives of the 1960s–equal rights for blacks and women; antipoverty efforts; Medicare; and stronger consumer, worker-safety, and environmental protection–were in line with this tradition and, for all their limitations, rectified long-standing injustices and helped advance freedom, opportunity, and a decent life for millions of Americans.
As in earlier reform eras, however, some of the policies and programs failed or backfired. Liberals also became so reliant on the courts and preoccupied with claims based on race, gender, and other aspects of identity that they were no longer able to command a political majority with a persuasive, general vision of the public good.
more Paul Starr:
The liberalism that we need now has to rebuild a democratic partnership at home that includes working- and middle-class families and a partnership with other liberal democracies in defense of our common values and security.
After years when conservatives have not just accepted but accelerated widening disparities in income and wealth, liberals need to frame their economic policies around the goal of a shared prosperity.
And in national security, where the Bush Administration has undermined our constitutional liberties while dissipating American power, liberals ought to argue that constitutionally limited power can again be more powerful than unlimited power and to lay claim to a democratic and inclusive tradition of American greatness.
Last one from Paul Starr:
The relationship of American liberalism to the left has always been ambivalent. While sharing some common ground with socialists and populists, liberals have favored a more circumscribed role for the state and often deplored the unwillingness to compromise, sentimental delusions, tendency to romanticize "the people," susceptibility to authoritarianism, and occasional violence on the left. Unlike the socialist ideal, the liberal conception of equality does not call for a classless society. ... Nonetheless, there has also been a productive tension between liberals and the left.
Radical movements have often been quicker to take up the cause of the socially marginalized and sometimes broken through barriers to reform that liberals mistakenly accepted as unchangeable. As liberalism is a practical philosophy of government and politics, liberals are perennially vulnerable to charges from the left that they have violated sacred ideals for the sake of profane compromises–and sometimes the accusations are justified. ...
Liberals sometimes lose their patience with the impatience of the left. But in attempting to defeat entrenched interests, liberalism without a left is missing a punch.
Liberalism has not fully reestablished itself, but it’s not in need of any "rescue party." The immediate challenges are strategic, and most liberals understand them that way: how to repair the damage to America from a disastrous conservative administration and how to build a durable political majority around those policies.
ok, that really is the last one from Paul Starr.
Thoughtful.
I sent Mike Malloy a word-up on the Pulse Poll, and after he read it on the air, Gore surged ahead. Folks, I gotta tell you, things are looking very, very good in California. We're out collecting those 500 signatures from each Congressional district to get Al Gore on our primary ballot. It never fails - there is always at least one person who asks if he/she can take an extra nomination paper because "there are others out there I know will sign." God, I love a volunteer.

The interference, which The Associated Press confirmed through nationwide tests, is the most drastic example yet of data discrimination by a US Internet service provider."
Burlington Airport says the flight has landed! wOOt!!!
Buzzing blog tonight. Let's see, Linda wrote "No Tom, Corporations are not people, it is a body made up by people that act as one body for their own interest."
Under the law, corporations are clearly regarded as persons for purposes of liability. It's just a legal joke, but when you state that corporations are bodies made up by people that act in their own interest, I think you need to step back and consider that many corporations are nothing but the business persona of a person who incorporates for purposes of liability. There is nothing about a corporation that is inherently or intrinsicily bad or destructive. Like people, any corporation, gigantic or tiny, acts in its own interest.
78. seashell. Call Comcast and tell them you have friends who didn't have to pay the extra fee for MSNBC. Joan wrote "No Tom, Dodd is anything but a corporatist, as I showed you on the previous thread."
I think he is. Open Secrets shows that 60%, or about $8.3 million of Dodd's contributions come from individuals, while PACs account for about $563,000. Of this , $418,000 is from businesses.
Corporations don't give money, only their PACs and employees do. These figures show that the business sector providing the single greatest source of contributions to Dodd by far is the securities and investment industries, with close to $2.6 million of the bundled contributions. Insurance and real estate are third and fourth with about $700,000 each, and commercial banks are fifth at almost a half million.

Former North Carolina senator John Edwards could not have dreamed up a better chance to draw a contrast with rival Hillary Clinton, a New York senator.
Article ToolsYesterday morning, ABC News reported on its website that Clinton had scheduled a "Rural Americans for Hillary" lunch for later this month. But the location for the lunch, which features a briefing from members of Congress and senior campaign staff, is anything but rural: the Washington office of Troutman Sanders Public Affairs, a lobbying firm representing Monsanto, the agribusiness and biotechnology giant.
Edwards had spent the past two days on the ground in Iowa promoting his rural agenda and looking for caucus votes. His hometown newspaper, the News & Observer in Raleigh, rewarded him with this headline: "Edwards gets boots dirty as he woos rural voters."
"While John Edwards has introduced policies to ensure family farmers can compete against big agribusiness, protect the food we eat and preserve farming communities, Hillary Clinton, beholden to Washington lobbyists, is tailoring her rural policy to reflect the needs of big agribusiness," Edwards's communications director, Chris Kofinis, said in a statement yesterday. "While corporate America and lobbyists may want someone like Clinton in the White House, regular Americans are ready for
Fred wrote "So just because they voted with good intentions does not devalue the fact that they feel it was a mistake."
When politicians demonstrate poor judgment, I basically regard good intentions as excuses. If you'll permit me, I'll stick to candidates who didn't do backflips on the sidelines for Bush.
What's your point Tom ... "they all do it"?
John Edwards has opted for public finance.
Barrack Obama takes no PAC money.
I'm assuming it's safe to assume this is a poll and not a marketing scheme allowing folks to come on and manipulate the numbers as long as Gore maintains his lead.
It would be a pretty big deal if Gore won the 68% needed for an endorsement, if not, second choices matter. (just like they do in Iowa)
somebody has to give oversight to the Banking industry and Dodd is as good a man as any
you have to be a member to vote, this is a membership vote, not unlike MoveOn takes before it takes action
I like it.
I'll bet the ballot fits nicely on an I-phone, maybe DFA has a macster at the tech helm?
Phil wrote "What's your point Tom ... 'they all do it'?"
Yes, well, you see, if I remember correctly, audrey called Clinton and Obama corporatists, and I said Obama, the community organizer, law professor and state senator corporatist must make Edwards the hedge fund special consultant and investor populist.
Then audrey said it was undisputed that Clinton and Obama took corporate contributions to a brazen extent, but that all candidates took corporate contributions, leading me to ask how you take corporate contributions to a brazen extent, and how does taking them to a brazen extent distinguish you as a corporatist from someone who merely takes corporate contributions.
Then I said Dodd is a corporatist because he fills his campaign coffers from the contributions of corporate donors in the finance, banking and insurance industries, leading Joan to ask me where this information came from, leading me to quote from Open Secrets regarding Dodd's prodigious fundraising from inside the industry. I was just having fun calling Dodd a corporatist after that.
Phil wrote "somebody has to give oversight to the Banking industry and Dodd is as good a man as any."
No doubt, but isn't he a corporatist?
challenging Corporations would cause Republican mass hysteria
just Edwards challenging the tax code has them nervous
here in the peanut gallery all of my posts have an implied IMHO
DFA endorsed Deval Patrick was elected Governor. DFA endorsed Obama. So did Patrick.
The two - Patrick and Obama - seem to have a similar voice.
WTF??? Al Gore is leading the pulse poll? How did that happen? Could it be that he hacked his way in to send us a signal? Everyone knows he invented the Internet so........ ;-)
Phil wrote "challenging Corporations would cause Republican mass hysteria."
I squeezed my comment regarding the need for public campaign financing into the corporation hysteria earlier today. We should dial down the rhetoric and concentrate on the actual problem.
I will not vote to move Iowa caucus night to Jan. 3rd as Republicans have done.
THE ORANGE BOWL ring a bell with anyone? not the elephant brains
New Hampshire and Iowa should stick with the date in the rules.
Indy wrote "WTF??? Al Gore is leading the pulse poll? How did that happen?"
The problem is that this is a marketing scheme allowing folks to come and manipulate the numbers, not a poll, because it didn't end after three days.
the actual problem.

Iowa should be able to keep its delegates to the presidential nominating convention that way.
Gore/Boxer

At least that seems obvious to me, but I can't speak for everyone.

Well, that's always the way it is. Email harvesting. Oh well, it's for a good cause! And now DFA has email addresses, names, locations and people's top Prez preferences. They could package and use it many ways.
How else would you do it? Three days isn't long enough for "membership" to vote.
I won't even go to a caucus that is head to head with the Orange Bowl lol and I'm precinct chair.
Indy wrote "How else would you do it? Three days isn't long enough for 'membership' to vote."
I tend to agree.
I liked this guy very much, and my fathers cousin's son was his aid.

And some Prez candidates take DFA seriously enough to ask their supporters to come and vote. That means DFA is in their sights. Good sign...
Indy Steve
this vote is similar to the way I propose to allocate delegate numbers to the national convention in 2012
by Congressional District as per delegates awarded (which are determined by the previous election vote)

I would if I had the opportunity. Michigan's opinion this election year won't even be a spit in the ocean.

At least you can rest assured Notre Dame won't be in it this year! Go Irish!
When will this primary shuffling finally settle down?
Like most Americans, you know we need a new direction in this country.
The end of the Bush-Cheney Administration will be a major step in the right direction. But it will take more than a change of parties in the White House to repair the damage they've done.
George Bush and Dick Cheney have turned special-interest politics into an art form, but they didn't invent it. It was there before they got to Washington, and if you and I don't stand up and challenge it, it will be there long after they leave.
We need to turn the page on that kind of politics.
Cast your Democracy for America endorsement vote for change now:

The people who benefit from politics as a game are counting on you to walk away. But I need you to get involved.
I'm not just asking you to trust in my ability to change this country -- I'm asking you to trust in yourself, in your own instincts, and in your own sense of possibility.
I'm asking you to bet on us, on our capacity to do what previous generations have done -- to lift our sights, to join together, to forge a better future for our children and grandchildren.
Everywhere we've gone we've seen huge crowds hungry for change. We saw 10,000 in Iowa City, 20,000 in Austin, 20,000 in Atlanta, and nearly 25,000 in New York.
These crowds tell me that when it comes to what's wrong with this country, the American people are not the problem. The American people are the answer.

In the face of the most entrenched political machine in Democratic politics, I believe a movement of ordinary Americans can change our country.
Hope and change are not just the rhetoric of a campaign for me. Hope and change have been the causes of my life.
In the face of a politics that's shut us out and told us to settle, I believe we can be one people, reaching for what's possible, building that more perfect union.
I hope you'll join me.
Thank you,
Barack Obama
Indy wrote "When will this primary shuffling finally settle down?"
I think when Bill Gardner says it will.
Obama has 300,000 e-mail addresses, it will be fun to watch our numbers when they get the word to come here and vote.

And DFA is going to double its "membership" overnight! Brilliant!!!
If Bill Gardner says December I think Iowa and New Hampshire will part ways. we might get to see if new Hampshire gives Iowa a bounce
most Obama supporters would feel at home at DFA
oops, midnight. Pumpkin time. Night all.
Indy, I would take the near simultaneous use of "brilliant" as an agreement from the world.
It is true of Dodd supporters as well.
Paine, stars are aligned! All one.
Al Gore will be flattered by the attention. who knows it might be his famous "tipping point".
nite all
go Sox take it to seven just to stretch the season, the NBA is playing already if not
Well, sorry to have been disruptive. Good stirring the pot tonight, Tom.

... i'm wondering who is more favored among Gore supporters if he's not the guy, doesn't get in? Who would Gore vote for himself?
There is a new thread folks....don't wait 3 days to find it.
