Y'all do realize that IF he listens to your pleas and steps forward as a candidate, everything that follows will be your fault.

It's a lot easier if the candidates are self-appointed or put forward by the corporate mischief makers.

Monica wrote "Y'all do realize that IF he listens to your pleas and steps forward as a candidate, everything that follows will be your fault. It's a lot easier if the candidates are self-appointed or put forward by the corporate mischief makers."

I don’t foresee him running. In my opinion, he’s been very open about his lack of interest and the reasons for not ruling out the possibility unequivocally.

A soldier, congressman, senator, vice-president, professor, entrepreneur, academy award winner, Nobel prize winner: Gore’s career is among the most accomplished imaginable. How strange was the confluence of schemes by a host of evildoers that screwed us out of his presidency. It must rank as one of the most tragic twists of fate ever.

I doubt that he covets the office anymore, or even feels he can have his greatest influence in it. I also tend to agree that he would be savaged by right wing miscreants if he ran, and that any decision to run should arise from the candidate’s self-motivation instead of the lobbying of others.

The oil companies are already diversifying into other energy sources.  Didn't you catch ExxonMobil's ad on PBS?

I'm beginning to think that the oil companies and car companies have gotten a bit of a bad rap as the movers behind the suburbanization of America.  I don't think we built highways and got people out of mass transit to promote the interests of those corporations.  I don't even think we did it to satisfy the greed of real estate speculators and developers.  I think we did it in response to the fear of urban concentrations of poor and angry people which would be easier to manage, if they were wider dispersed.  You know, a large project in the furtherance of crowd control.

RUN AL RUN!

Here's a shout out to Linda*in*SFNM!  You must be floating today!!!  Utterly tickled at the news!!!

This is the best article I've come across today on Gore:

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1670838,00.html

I agree with much of it, especially the part about Gore's current happiness having been hard won. But I take exception to the idea that running for President is by definition an act of hubris. I think that may be true for most people, yes, but in this case it could well be that not running is the act of hubris, and that stepping into the campaign is what would take the greater level of humility.

Being a political purist, I'm intrigued by the possibility of the President actually being chosen by the people.  Indeed, if the candidates are good, how the final tally comes out isn't actually that important.  It's only when the candidates are crooks that we end up up the creek.  I'm hoping most everyone understands that at this point.

I do not know to what extent the Vice President was aware of the planning for the invasion of Iraq and the establishment of a permanent military/espionage center.   Clearly, the First Lady was fully aware and went into the Senate with open eyes.  (So, I think it's actually good that she's not claiming a mistake that wasn't.  What's bad is that she still won't disavow the original plan which has now either killed or displaced twenty percent of Iraq's population--a greater percentage of Arabs, if you take into account that the Kurdish region has suffered few civilian deaths or displacements).

Draft Gore Statement on Al Gore
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize

We are gratified by the awarding of this prestigious award to Al Gore. It confirms our judgment of the man, his principles, vision, experience, efforts, and promise. He is in a unique position to lead not only our country, but to make our America a leader for peace in the world.

This award will only add to the tremendous tidal wave of support for Al Gore and the growing demands that he become a candidate for President in 2008. He is in a unique position to make a difference in the world on the one issue he believes to be the most important of our times. We believe under the circumstances he has no choice but to take the one step left to have the greatest impact in changing policy on global warming -- run for President.

Full page ad in the New York Times.

Dear Mr. Vice President:
In the dark days of December 2000, when you
bravely conceded the election you knew in your
heart you had won, you said:
“I do have one regret: that I didn't get the chance to
stay and fight for the American people … especially for
those who need burdens lifted and barriers removed,
especially for those who feel their voices have not been
heard. I heard you and I will not forget.”
Today we respectfully ask that you honor that
pledge and hear us now.
You say you have fallen out of love with politics,
and you have every reason to feel that way. But we
know you have not fallen out of love with your country.
And your country needs you now — as do your party and
the planet you are fighting
so hard to save.
You often quote
Winston Churchill to
remind us that we are
entering a period of
consequences with regard to
the global climate crisis.
You have done a superhuman job of bringing world
attention to this issue. But this effort needs to be raised
to a higher level. Only from the Oval Office can you
wield the kind of influence needed to move countries,
policies and corporations to bring about meaningful
change.
The period of consequences you talk about is upon
us in many other equally critical areas as well. Our
Constitution is being trampled and our most cherished
civil liberties are in grave danger. The executive branch
is not accountable to anyone. And the people most in
need of a voice in this country need someone in the
White House who will speak for them.
Thousands of Americans are dying needlessly in
Iraq while our reputation in the world has plummeted to
an all-time low. The war on terror is backfiring as our
enemies grow stronger and our resources are drained in
an endless and unwinnable war. This is one of the most
serious foreign policy crises our country has ever faced.
You were the first American political figure to
brave political waters and warn us of the perils of
starting a preemptive war in Iraq. You were right. But
time to reverse the damage is running out. Given your
experience, insight and the respect you enjoy among
world leaders, you are uniquely positioned to bring this
war to an end and restore America’s good name.
As you so often say, Mr. Vice President, these are
not political issues. They are moral issues.
That’s why more than 136,000 people have signed
our petition asking you to run for president in 2008.
Ours is an urgent call to service on behalf of the country
we love, the democracy that’s slipping away from us, and
a world and planet that are in peril. We write on behalf
of our children and grandchildren and plead with you to
to lead us to a brighter future.
Many good and caring candidates are contending
for the Democratic nomination. But none of them has
the combination of experience, vision, standing in the
world, and political courage that you would bring to the
job. Nor do they have the support among voters that you
enjoy and that would lead you to victory in 2008.
Mr. Vice President, there are times for politicians
and times for heroes. America and the Earth need a hero
right now — someone who will transcend politics as
usual and bring real hope to our country and to the
world. Please rise to this challenge, or you and millions
of us will live forever wondering what might have been.
Sincerely yours,
Draft Gore,
on behalf of the thousands of our volunteers
and the 136,000 people who signed our petition
asking you to run for president

We truly do have the power. It was written into our U.S. Constitution and our Declaration of Independence a long time ago. America has always been about the will of the people.

Dear Linda,

I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This award is even more meaningful because I have the honor of sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change--the world's pre-eminent scientific body devoted to improving our understanding of the climate crisis--a group whose members have worked tirelessly and selflessly for many years. We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.

My wife, Tipper, and I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the U.S. and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

Thank you,
Al Gore

...lol, worthy beginnings, Monica, imo.

Of course, very many things might be justified by the fear. However in case you are describing, imo, it is not the "fear", but the NATURAL and LOGICAL extension of the "way of thinking"/"way of life"/"values we hold so dear"/etc. THIS SOCIETY PROMOTES.

The modern production DOES REQUIRE COOPERATION and COLLECTIVE ACTIONS, while RELATIONSHIPS between people still STAY INDIVIDUALISTIC and IN COMPETITION.
This IS the main contradiction indeed (not OBL persona..., lol) that slowly (so far!) ERODES this society. None can stop it but soften a little.

Sigh!  Well maybe some more than just us "lefty loonies" have begun to discern the lies, the name calling, and the obfuscation the right wing has utilized for the past 20 years.  Maybe, just maybe,  like attacking the 12 year old boy who represented the CHIPs medical insurance program,  it will have real blowback and reverberations on these slimey, vicious people.  Maybe, people will see exactly what they do.

Frankly, I am sick to death of the Rush Limbaugh's, Fox News, and all the empty talking heads receiving the attention and credibility that they have had.  I want this country to represent intelligence, aspiration, generosity, ethics, fairness, and integrity.  I'm tired of the dumba** jerks supposedly representing the citizens of this country.  They are stupid, ignorant, vicious, deceptive, corrupt, and are the worst of us.  Enough already. Let's bring back aspiration, inspiration, responsiblity, intelligence, reason, and integrity.  AL YOU ARE THE ONE TO LEAD US.

After getting the "I am honored" email today from Al Gore, I sent back the following:

CONGRATULATIONS, AL!

I am heartglad that you are sharing the Nobel Peace Prize this year, along with the Emmy and Academy Award(s). May your joy be as full as that of the many people around the world who are encouraged today to think that the world is, at last, going to do something real about the Climate Crisis!

The difficulty is that now that we all know what's wrong, and we pretty much know how to begin to do something about it, we need people in leadership who will make it happen.

Today I read several speculative articles about this award and the new pressure on you to run for President. This is the best article I came across.
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1670838,00.html
I agree with much of it, especially the part about your current happiness having been hard won. But I take exception to the idea that running for President is by definition an act of hubris. I think that may be true for most people, yes, but this time it could well be that not running is the act of hubris, and that stepping into the campaign is what would take the greater level of humility. That is not to lay any blame on you, mind you, as I wouldn't blame you at all for not running. But there just isn't any candidate I am able to support, and I do not believe that Hillary Clinton will bring in enough of the Republican vote to win. I am aware of a number of Republicans who would, however, vote for you. Please hold this in the Light, and listen deeply deeply.
With Celebration and Hope,

Driving into Danville, Vermont this morning the color seemed even more vivId than usual.. Looking outside a few minutes ago I saw a flock of wild turkeys walking through our field. In spite of the rain everything looks a little brighter. Thank you, Linda, for all your good work. we have a rethug running down here who wants to do away with "government schools". she signed a petition  on a site that says "seperation of government and schools".

she is a looney for sure.

we are also in perrenial campaign mode here as our congress person in the 1st district died of cancer last saturday. Joanne Davis had been sick for sometime.

So we need to have a special election.

I am working on John Miller's campaign in the 1st sentate district of Virginia. Nov 6 we are gonna turn this state blue. Especially down here.

Next, the special election and then the presidential primary. We are going to have our Dem. State convention in Hampton so that will be quite an event.

Congratulations, Al Gore!!!  I feel so selfish for asking, but PLEASE run for president.  This time around, I think it will be harder for Gore to win the primary than the national (I think this was Dean's case, too).  However, the grassroots is ready this time.  I think Linda in SFNM alone can take on half the freepers on the "internets," lol!

Congratulations President Gore and to the UN panel for your tireless and ongoing work to save Mother Earth.

We're in this together. Shun bottled water! We no longer have it at work or at our meetings. We pass out personal water bottles. Forget about those plastic bags at the grocer. Buy one or two large hemp or canvass totes for your purchases, and if you have to drive to the store, take your smallest vehicle. Speaking of vehicles, the only people that need a humongous pick up truck are farmers and construction workers. Got an SUV - dump it! Need it for a weekend trip to Tahoe or wherever you think you need it - rent one! Your kids will fit into one of the very nice station wagons that many automakers have put on the market in the past few years (think Outback by, I believe, Subaru). Speaking of kids, if they are within 10 blocks of school, encourage them to walk in groups. They'll get much needed exercise and hone their social skills.

How else can we save Mother Earth? There are many obvious ones I'm missing this morning.

Thank you, Al, for keeping us on the right track.

al gore's award of the nobel peace prize makes me believe in the 'long arc of justice.'

he has my vote if he runs for potus.  there's a lot of speculation in the media, but one scenario i have yet to hear is the counsel of respected scientists from diverse fields, researching the climate, oceans, crops, diseases, population shifts, and so on.  if the RATES of changes increase dramatically and if the effects of those changes are projected to manifest themselves [or the cascade of them are modelled to begin] in the next eight-year presidential term, i think he can be convinced to run.  then, there would be virtually no other candidate.
