Beat a Bush Democrat
DFA fights for the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. That's why primaries matter.
Give $15 to DFA right now and join the fight to make Congress progressive:
www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/PrimariesMatter
DFA isn't afraid to take on a tough fight. Bush Democrats vote with Republicans on too many issues that matter: The Iraq War. Warrantless wiretapping. Stem cells research.
Together, we hold Bush Democrats accountable and support progressive primary challengers who stand up for America's values. Thanks to you, we have a track record of victory in primary battles against DC establishment candidates.
You made Rep. Jerry McNerney the DFA Grassroots All-Star and he soundly won his primary against a Beltway hand-picked Bush Democrat. Or Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, who couldn't have won her primary battle without the support of DFA members against another D.C. anointed candidate.
Now let's beat two more. Support grassroots leader Donna Edwards against Bush Democrat Al Wynn in MD-04. Support strong progressive Mark Pera against Bush Democrat Dan Lipinski in IL-03. Your $15 today gives DFA the resources to take these DFA-List candidates over the top:
www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/PrimariesMatter
When we unite to support real grassroots candidates the progressive movement wins. Together we're building a People-Powered America and fighting for a Progressive Congress.
Thank you for putting your contribution into action today.

nothing about fair trade??????????????????

Even if Gore changes his mind and decides to join the fray, the clock's ticking on any run for the White House. "He certainly would shake up the race if he changed his mind and jumped in, but with the Iowa caucuses less than three months away, his window of opportunity to make a serious run for the democratic has probably closed," said CNN political editor Mark Preston.
~~~
That'e a CNN pundit's position. A good candidate whose name is famous worldwide does not need to be in a "window of opportunity" to run in Iowa and win.
What he would need is to be get on the ballot for each state he would intend to run in before it's deadline.
Run, Al, run
WOOF!
Joan, I love this statement from yesterday.
""Longtime political aide Roy Neel, who runs Gore's office in Nashville, Tenn., said the former vice president is focusing on prompting action against global warming. He said he has seen no signs Gore is contemplating a race.
"He's making no plans, and we're doing nothing," said Neel, adding, "He's not ruled it out in the future."
Asked what "the future" meant, Neel said, "Sometime later than today.""
Syria Tells Journalists Israeli Raid Did Not Occur
DEIR EZ ZOR, Syria, Oct. 9 — Foreign journalists perused the rows of corn and the groves of date palms pregnant with low-hanging fruit here this week, while agents of Syria’s ever present security services stood in the background, watching closely, almost nervously.
Breaking: Gore trip to China canceled; SF fundraiser for Boxer back ON
by Jim in Chicago [Subscribe]
This just in from 2 members of Netroots for Gore:
I just received a call from the Boxer campaign telling me that Al Gore had to cancel his trip to China and, therefore, will be at the Boxer funraiser in San Francisco as scheduled.
Aww, Linda, my hopes had been raised!
Later, folks.
Reommended, Susan Rowe.
I think I will call Nancy Pelosi's office Monday. These comments of her's defending Florida are continuing to irritate me. It is like she has only heard one side of it... not the truth.
"..." Pelosi also said the imbroglio over the primary isn’t the fault of Florida Democrats, who are the ones being sanctioned.
“Let’s be clear about what happened in Florida. The Republican legislature changed the date of the election there and also put a tax issue on the ballot that the Democrats just could not walk away from,” she said. “It wasn’t Florida Democrats who said they wanted to push earlier.”
Much more at the link, where I debunked what she said. It WAS their fault.
TIME Preview: Clarence Thomas Does Lunch, Merle Haggard Backs Hillary, Jenna Explains Why She Isn't in Iraq
By E&P Staff
Published: October 11, 2007 10:55 AM ET
NEW YORK The upcoming issue of Time magazine, out tomorrow, features a cover story on the Supreme Court by David Von Drehle -- and country legend Merle Haggard coming out for Hillary Clinton.
Also, Jenna Bush, daughter of the president, asked why she supports the Iraq war but hasn't volunteered to serve there, answers, "I understand the point, but there are many ways to serve our country, and I think my skills are better suited for teaching and representing the U.S. in Latin America through UNICEF....But if people eally thought about it, they would know it's not even a practical question." She also rules out ever going into politics.
Justice Clarence Thomas, author of a new autobiography, hails closer relations among justices under Chief Justice John Roberts. Now it “is a place where rather than hurling aspersions, people will actually sit at lunch and chat and laugh … When I first got here, it was two, three people, a maximum of four. Now, today, for example, it was the entire court, all nine. It is an interesting experience.”
An open letter to Karen Hughes
Your duty is to defend America's reputation in the world. To do so, you must persuade the Bush administration to renounce its abhorrent and hypocritical policy on torture.
By Sidney Blumenthal
Oct. 11, 2007 | Karen Hughes
Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs
U.S. Department of State
2201 C St. NW
Washington, DC 20520
Dear Karen Hughes:
You may recall that we met briefly in January 2001, during the transition to the Bush administration, when you dropped by my office in the White House. You were filled with enthusiasm and I wished you good luck. Now I am writing you as the executive producer of a documentary, "Taxi to the Dark Side" (directed by Alex Gibney), to invite you to a private preview in Washington on Oct. 18. The film has been described by the New York Times as "a meticulous examination of American policy on the interrogation of prisoners. It traces the scandals at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere to official changes of policy originating in the vice president's office and approved by the secretary of defense. We see documents listing approved methods of interrogation, including waterboarding, which simulates drowning."
The film includes interviews with military interrogators, victims and families of those tortured, and with members of the Bush administration who opposed the policy, such as former general counsel of the Navy Alberto Mora and Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell.
"Taxi to the Dark Side" has won the prizes for best documentary at the Tribeca, Newport and Ojai film festivals, will be aired this month on major television channels throughout Europe, is being shown next week by special request at the European Union's annual ministerial meeting, and will be distributed commercially by Think Films in theaters throughout the U.S. and Europe in January 2008, after which it will be broadcast on the Discovery Channel. The Times calls "Taxi" devastating." The Guardian of London says its documentation is "irrefutable."
Gonzales Hires a Top Gun
Still under investigation by Congress and Justice Department lawyers who once worked for him, the former attorney general has turned to a leading Washington attorney to help him beat the rap.
By Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball
Newsweek
Updated: 2:12 p.m. ET Oct. 10, 2007
Oct. 10, 2007 - No sooner did Alberto Gonzales resign as attorney general last month than he retained a high-powered Washington criminal-defense lawyer to represent him in continuing inquiries by Congress and the Justice Department.
Gonzales’s choice of counsel, George Terwilliger—a partner at White & Case—is ironic if not surprising. A former deputy attorney general under the first President Bush, who later helped oversee GOP lawyers in the epic Florida recount battle of 2000, Terwilliger had been a White House finalist to replace Gonzales—only to be aced out at the last minute by retired federal judge Michael Mukasey.
Kindness is free!
Just came up from listening to Bonnie and Jackson rehearse. Dang wish I had a DFA pin on me!
That would be Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne - they are here for Barbara.
A Bush Democrat is a DLC Democrat or the NEW Democrat, which isn't a Democrat at all, but a REPUBLICAN, as Alan Greenspan noted. The DLC, Democratic Leadership Council, has morphed into the NDN, New Democrat Network and the NDC, New Democrat Coalition, but all are Bush DLC Democrats. If Congresspersons want to be members of the DLC, then they should be proud to be members of the DLC, or not be doing something they can't be proud to do. REPUBLICANS DO NOT REPRESENT 90% of the MAJORITY POPULATION. DLC Bush Republican-Democrats DO NOT REPRESENT 70% of the MAJORITY POPULATION.
With the DLC-NDN-NDC Bush Democrats in charge of the Democratic Party and the laws changed where "write in's" aren't allowed, WE, the 70% MAJORITY POPULATION are being taxed without having representation in the U.S.Congress. TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION must not continue to be allowed.
Here are a few of the DLC members who are proud of what they do. The DNC and/or the DFA should get a complete list of ALL DLC, NDN and NDC members and publish it for the 70% Majority, because if our representatives want to be members of the DLC, NDN and NDC working for the elite, then they should be proud to represent the elite. It is never good to be doing something you are not proud to do. New Bush Democrat Movement info and a few of the Bush DLC, Bush NDN and Bush NDC are listed as follows:
New Democrat Movement
GROUP
The right wing current of the Democratic party, characterized by its neoliberal economic policies, support of Israel, desire to increase defense spending, and links to heavy donors and fundraisers.
Believes that "left-wing" positions are not politically viable. Describes itself as "moderate and pro-growth". Probably responsible for erosion of the Democratic Party's historical labor and minority base due to support of treaties like NAFTA, lack of support for affirmative action and poverty programs, and their siphoning away of campaign funds from minority groups.
At the national level, the movement was founded by the Democratic Leadership Council (501c4 educational non-profit, founded 1984) and includes the House New Democrat Coalition (founded 1997), the Senate New Democrat Coalition (founded 2000), the New Democrat Network PAC (founded 1996), the misnamed Progressive Policy Institute (501c4 think tank, "Bill Clinton's idea mill", founded 1989), and the umbrella funding group The Third Way Foundation (501c3 non-profit, founded 1996).
Since coming to power within the Democratic Party with Bill Clinton's presidency, the New Democrats/DLC have worked towards "essentially the same purpose as the Christian Coalition... to pull a broad political party dramatically to the right" according to John Nichols of The Progressive.
DLC operatives actively worked to sabotage Howard Dean's candidacy for the US Presidency in 2004, claiming that the "far-left" Democrat was wrong to attack George W. Bush's tax cuts and national security policies.
Corporate contributors to the DLC and New Democratic Network include Bank One, Citigroup, Dow Chemical, DuPont, General Electric, Health Insurance Corporation of America, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Philip Morris, RJR Nabisco, Chevron, Prudential Foundation, Amoco Foundation, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, Occidental Petroleum, Raytheon, and many other Fortune 500 companies.
The New Democrat Movement is sometimes referred to as the Dixiecrat movement due to the DLC's origination in the southern states, their desire to get rid of affirmative action, and their membership's overwhelming whiteness.
"[Democrats should] shift the primary focus from racism, the traditional enemy without, to self-defeating patterns of behavior [among blacks]" --Chuck Robb, 2nd DLC Chairman, Governor & Senator of the Great State of Virginia, White Man, 1986.
"I'm from the democratic wing of the Democrat Party" --Paul Wellstone, progressive Democrat, criticizing the New Democrat Movement.
"Democrats for the Leadership Class" --Jesse Jackson, progressive black Democrat, describing the DLC.
Vaccine-linked polio hits Nigeria
BBC News | October 10, 2007
Alex Last
Nigeria is fighting a rare outbreak of a vaccine-derived form of polio, says the UN's World Health Organization.
It says 69 children in the north have caught the paralysing disease from others who had already been immunised.
The WHO says such rare outbreaks have occurred where immunisation campaigns did not reach enough of the population.
In 2003 Islamic leaders brought a temporary halt to the vaccine campaign in the north saying it was a Western conspiracy to sterilise Muslim women.
The WHO says this rare outbreak of vaccine-derived polio demonstrates the need for more vaccination, not less.
But the concern is that the cause of the outbreak could be misinterpreted by people here and reinforce their scepticism of the whole vaccine campaign.
Scare stories
The WHO says the outbreak occurred when some of those who had received the oral polio vaccine excreted a mutated form of the virus which infected those who were not immunised.
It says the outbreak is ongoing but slowing because of the continuing vaccination campaign, and the last reported case was in August.
The WHO says the outbreak occurred because not enough people were receiving the polio vaccine in the first place.
Northern Nigeria still has a low coverage rate for the vaccination campaign, a legacy of a temporary halt to the programme in 2003.
Those scare stories built on existing traditional scepticism of Western medicine.
But more recently the vaccination programme has made some progress.
Polio cases as a whole are down on last year, in part because of a new programme of polio victims accompanying immunisation teams to demonstrate to parents the risks of not having their children vaccinated.
Fred, again, still not sure what your intent is supposed to mean, even with your Duh added.
Are you saying the only way a trade agreement should be allowed is if it becomes a FAIR trade, instead of FREE trade? If you would clarify and agree with this statement, then I would join you in adding so.
But that is not what was offered. Obama said he supported the FREE Trade agreement and expansion of the EXISTING NAFTA with the highly questionable Peruvian addition to the FREE Trade agreement.
"Obama said he would vote for a Peruvian trade agreement next week, in response to a question from a man in Londonderry, NH who called NAFTA and CAFTA a disaster for American workers. He said he supported the trade agreement with Peru because it contained the labor and environmental standards sought by groups like the AFL-CIO, despite the voter’s protests to the contrary."
He also affirmed his support for free trade. “I am not going to say on a blanket basis that I’m going to vote against trade agreements,” Obama said. “We cannot draw a moat around the u.s. economy b/c china is still trading, India is still trading.”
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2...
But NAFTA and the expansion does not have Fair trade standards and regulations.
The AFL-CIO does not support the Peruvian agreement, and the labor/environmental standards leave enforcement up to the Bush administration, rather than empowering third parties to enforce them (like corporations have the power to enforce investor rights provisions in these same trade agreements).
Obama is the first presidential candidate to officially declare his/her support for the NAFTA expansion moving through the Congress. His announcement is not necessarily surprising, considering he was the keynote speaker at the launch of the Hamilton Project - a Wall Street front group working to drive a wedge between Democrats and organized labor on globalization issues.
http://www.workingassetsblog.com/2007/10... /breaking_obama_says_he_will_vo.html
Leaving enforcement to the Bush administration - or any administration - is the biggest loophole possible. It is precisely why corporate lobbyists have bragged to reporters that the standards are not enforceable.
I do not like to be asked to "beat" Republicans.
Martha, this is the 2nd time you keep posting an incorrect list of the DLC NDOL New Democrats, what ever.
And you don't post the link of this supposed source. The only ones I know don't or didn't come from the site and this COULD be a reproduced old one.
I have offered the last PUBLIC Membership List before and now I have to print the entirity with it's link.
DLCers make up just a tiny fraction of Democrats (they're all politicians.) If enough ordinary Democrats can be awakened to what they really are, it shouldn't be too hard to send them packing to the GOP where they belong, to be replaced by RealDems.
Fred, again, still not sure what your intent is supposed to mean, even with your Duh added
=============================
Well, I guess it is a complicated matter and terms like "fair trade" are not really defined. Maybe I was a little too jocular, however your question was abstract, and I thought you didn't even know in the abstract, what it was.
I think we need to have other countries have the same working condition standards as our OSHA and NIOSH, as well as child labor laws. Maybe if we did, we wouldn't have lead in our toys. People should be paid a living wage. There's no reason we cannot.
NAFTA, I hear, is a disaster. The Mexican make less than they did before it. The were supposed to make so much, they would not even want to come here to work anymore. We got suckered again, and if Obama thinks we should follow more of the same of this, I'll have to tell my daughter that her teeny-bopper friends are all wrong with their Obama-mania.
We need to lead for this in the world. China has enough customers in poor countries where $5/ day is good money. If we want cheap cheap, all we do is drive the price up for them. We need to start producing goods for the developed world and ourselves again with standards. If China and other countries want our business, they should have to meet our standards.
It is too late to put the genie back in the bottle, but at least we can correct our mistakes moving forward, or at least try.
Vaccine-linked polio hits Nigeria
BBC News | October 10, 2007
Nigeria is fighting a rare outbreak of a vaccine-derived form of polio, says the UN's World Health Organization
=============================
Great. Just what we need. A vaccine that not only protects us, but gives diseases that compell others to get the vaccines. Kind of like a viral pyramid scheme.
OK Fred, so we're on the same page, we can have a Fair trade, not Free Trade and surely not a continual expansion of the Free Trade.
That's why I asked what you meant about your comment "nothing about fair trade???????"
....you meant he wasn't talking of fair, but Free.
Yes
43. LOL, Did they bother to compile such a small list? :)
I find it more than a little disturbing to see these out-of-date DLC membership lists of dubious reliability trotted out in what are intended as obvious attacks on the people who appear in them. One egregious example is the identification of Rep. Zoe Lofgren as a member, the very first member of Congress to ever support Dean’s candidacy for president, who made this statement when From and Reed produced their noisome memo regarding Dean in 2003:
"When I go home every weekend, my constituents talk to me about health care, education and the economy. Dr. Howard Dean has an outstanding record of achievement in all of these areas. As governor, 96% of Vermont’s children had health coverage, and an additional 3% were eligible. He passed fiscally responsible budgets each and every year. He built a strong educational system, and as a result, Vermont’s students rank 6th in the country in overall performance. Dr. Dean’s record is one that ALL Democrats can be proud of.
"Al From and Bruce Reed spend a lot of time talking about myths in Democratic nominating process. I think it is more important to focus on the facts:
"Fact #1: Attacking fellow Democrats is wrong and will do nothing to help beat George W. Bush in 2004.
"Fact #2: Dr. Dean is a proven leader in the Democratic Party with a broad and growing base of support.
"Fact #3: Dr. Dean will be the Democratic Party’s nominee next year and will go on to beat George W. Bush.
"It is disappointing that From and Reed feel the need to rip into fellow Democrats. They should stop these misguided efforts, and spend their considerable resources on beating George W. Bush."
Now are we supposed to assume Lofgren is some ersatz liberal and sell-out because of these discredited lists, or are we to believe our own senses?
Well, fair trade started with agriculture, probably coffee. And there you have farms that are family businesses. All you need be concerned with is the price they are getting /pound, etc.
But it gets much more complicated, when we talk about manufacturing and hourly wage workers, working conditions, etc. a la Dickens'-era-work-houses, if you catch my drift.
Unfortunately, we live in a bumper-sticker world. "Fair trade" is a good term as long as it is the antithesis of "free trade" which we should characterize as free-for-all-corporate trade, and a football game with no referees, but anything but free for the workers, who are often virtually prisoners.
We need to say we are not for "free trade" but for "fair trade"
I thought I'd share this as I just dug it up for a Diary on Kos.
...talking about the Dean O Meter
A bit of a link to go with Linda's picture of two real patriots:
You Can Laugh, But the Gore Mania Should Tell You Something by TocqueDeville Thu Oct 11, 2007 at 02:07:29 PM PDTI have a little device I call the Dean-O-Meter. I keep it in my shirt pocket close to my heart. Every time I watch a Democratic debate, or see a candidate speak, I can pull it out and measure see how they rank compared to any given Dean speech. Sometimes I think my Dean-O-Meter is broken. The little needle just sits there. Then someone will say something, like when Edwards talked about taking on corporate power, and it will flicker a bit.
Then someone will say something, like when Edwards talked about taking on corporate power, and it will flicker a bit.
It only flickers because he doesn't have a record to match the rhetoric.
In the six months since we launched Divest for Darfur, we've seen how effective our voices can be:
The House passed (by 418 votes to 1!) a bill that would empower individual states to divest.
Four companies announced they will cease operations in Sudan or significantly change their relationships with the country.
Berkshire-Hathaway has sold significant portions of its holdings in PetroChina.
EPA registers methyl iodide: Ignoring the pleas of more than fifty of the nation's eminent scientists, EPA granted Arysta Life Science a one-year approval for its fumigant pesticide Midas. The Clinton/ Bush NAFTA-CAFTA Decimation of the United States and the World must STOP. I agree with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, here is what Senator Bernie Sanders has to say about how good these EXTREME Right Wing Trade Agreements are for average people:
What happened with the passage of N.A.F.T.A.? In Mexico, the agricultural sector has been decimated by cheap exports from American agribusiness. Poverty has increased, the middle class has declined and people are literally dying in the desert trying to flee Mexico for the U.S. Working families in Mexico suffer, the rich have gotten richer and we now have the obscenity of the wealthiest person in the world, Mexican Carlos Slim Helu, coming from a country in which millions of families struggle to feed their children. This may be the kind of economic development championed by you, but not by me. We can have trade policies that can do better, that must do better.
It’s not only Mexico and other developing countries that have been hurt by these unfettered pro-corporate free-trade agreements. It’s also the working families in the U.S. who are now engaged in a horrendous “race to the bottom.”
Despite an explosion of technology and a huge increase in worker productivity, poverty in America is increasing, the middle class is shrinking, and the gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider. In the past six years, millions of good-paying jobs in the U.S. have been lost as companies shut down here and move to China and other low-wage countries.
During that same period, median household income for working-age families has declined by about $2,500, 8.6 million Americans have lost their health insurance, three million have lost their pensions, and millions are working longer hours for lower wages. Meanwhile, the gap between the rich and the poor in the U.S. is now the highest of any industrialized country and greater than at any time since the 1920s.
Nobody I know believes we should place a wall around this country. Trade is a good thing, but what we must begin doing is negotiating fair trade agreements that reflect the interests of working families in America, working families in other countries, and not just large multinational corporations and the CEOs who help write these trade agreements.
Bernie Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 after serving 16 years in the House of Representatives. He is the longest serving independent member of Congress in American history.
And David Sirota on the EXTREME Right's take over of the United States monetary system:
"The [Right Wing] shenanigans are so nauseating that even some principled Republicans are outraged. The New York Times notes that at the recent GOP presidential debate, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) voiced concerns about the "hedge-fund bonanza" saying that it represents a “transfer of wealth from the poor and the middle class to the wealthy,” and adding that, in the current monetary system, “the money gravitates to the banks and to Wall Street. That’s why you have more billionaires than ever before.” Similarly, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said, “The reality is that when you have the average C.E.O. salary 500 times the average worker, and you have the hedge fund manager making 2,200 times that of the average worker, you’re going to create a level of discontent." (end of quote)
Now, just because Republicans who are causing the problems, can see that the problems exist doesn't mean one should vote Republican; although, WE THE PEOPLE of the greater majority won't be any better off with a DLC Bush Democrat, like Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Biden or Dodd, than we will be with a REPUBLICAN, as both are in coalition to accomplish the same project, the Project of the New American Century http://www.newamericancentury.org/. The only candidates that are not DLC are Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich.
WE THE PEOPLE of the greater majority must vote in candidates that represent us, so that the 70% MAJORITY POPULATION will not continue to have NO REPRESENTATION AT ALL, only propaganda that we are being represented, but no actual representation. Our jobs wouldn't be being outsourced if we had actual representation.
If you are Christian, like myself, surely you know that Jesus didn't carry a machete. Jesus said, "Peace be with you." We are to follow PEACE, the peace of our LORD Jesus -- NOT MAN -- if Jesus walked the earth today, Jesus would not be a member of Blackwater carrying a sub machine gun killing people or authorizing the killing of people, that Jesus suffered cruelty and indignity without mercy and gave his life to save.
Vote for Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich because Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich are NOT members of the DLC. WE THE PEOPLE must get rid of the DLC and that will be in the PRIMARIES:
Hey Linda I'm about to go down in about 45 minutes to catch the Boxer fundraiser. My hotel colleague is taking me in the side door. Can you believe that Boxer's group didn't want to take my money? They said the event was sold out. LOL
How crazy, they turned down my money. I'll have to donate online.
I'll report back later after Al's speech.
Hello from Bs As
People here were dancing in the streets when the verdict came down on von Wernich. People are re-examining the Catholic church as well they should and then remove the poop from office.
Did the news there report that one Buddhist monk was tortured to death? Burma is getting lots of attention here.
Due to a groin injury inflicted by a massage therapist who dug her fingers in so hard and far that I shrieked in pain (this happened a week before I came here), and now I'm having problems with minor nausea, no appetite, bloating and minor pain. I saw my Asian MD acupuncturist twice before coming here and almost cancelled my trip. He said she likely bruised me pretty badly and that I should seek an acupuncturist here but that he thought I'd be fine. When I try to dance, I feel just sick enuf so that I have to come home. Tomorrow I see an MD acupuncturist - a stranger - makes me nervous but I have to go since I can't walk much or dance. The lower section of my body just above the groin feels awful - not pain, not achey, just very upset. And the belching (and other things) is constant. I felt good after acupuncture from Dr. Hong so maybe this guy tomorrow will help.
So...I'm telling you all this and asking for Light and Prayers.
No dancing tonight. :-(
ahhh, so perhaps the possibility of a Gore run is what's drawing the S. Jacksons et.al. to the blog here. heh heh.
That plus the fissures in their own party:
GOP UPDATE....The Republican presidential race just keeps getting weirder. The Christian Right seems to be gearing up for a full-scale war against Rudy Giuliani, and it's hard to believe he can win the nomination in the face of this onslaught. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, still has his whole Mormon problem, and it doesn't seem to be going away. Meanwhile, John McCain is launguishing in nowheresville, Fred Thompson is impressing no one (and he's already been blackballed by James Dobson anyway), and no one else is a serious contender. It's really hard to see how anyone wins this thing.
In fact, even though I guess I don't really believe this, it sure seems as the Republican Party is heading for a brokered convention this year. A battered, bloody, and bruised brokered convention. It's the prediction that never comes true, but who knows? Maybe dark horse Mike Huckabee will win on the 27th ballot?
—Kevin Drum
oh, hi seashell. Take good care of yourself.
It's really hard to see how anyone wins this thing.
Love to the see Repos have a fight at the convention. Dems too for that matter, though it's a lot less likely.
What's the deal with you and S.Jackson? A little eccentric but doesn't seem all that bad.
Jimmy Carter is the man. You folks that leave the Democratic Party are leaving the Party that produced one of the world's great humanitarians. DLC Democrats are in the tent, we just can't let them steer the agenda.
Dick Lugar is as Republican as they come but gave a very insightful analysis of our need to address Russia and nuclear proliferation.
I'll see if I can find a link.
Scoop Jackson is a troll, Fred. comes here to block the progressive agenda
Lantos means well, but our relationship with Turkey includes the exit door from Iraq. I'm not sure picking at a 100 year old scab is a good idea, especially when what we are doing in Iraq has similar civilian causualties and mass displacement. I wish the House would focus on the US role in current near genocide levels of DP's there.
I'll be sure to check back after baseball for Denise's report. attacks on Gore means they are running scared
Gore/Boxer
Fred
The original Scoop Jackson was the Joe Lieberman of the Vietnam War in the Democratic Party in the late sixties.
Huckabee would get more votes than most of the rest of them, especially against anyone seen as elitist (which is how they would paint Gore); Gore would clean up against a Romney.
Thanks for filling one of the holes in my knowledge base on Jackson.
If it is a genocide that Turkey has been officially denying, it is hard to ignore, especially for making such a big deal over Ahmedinejad for just asking the rhetorical question if there ever was a holocaust (his argument being that it was not in the Arab world.)
Has Turkey officially denied it?
Politics and military strategy cannot be an obstacle to protesting it.
The holocaust is already over 60 years old.
60 years ago a tyrant put 7 million people to death for no other reason than their ethic/religous beliefs.
It isn't trivial.
Well to be perfectly objective. Ahmadinejad did not seem to even have a contentious nature. I thought the people who interviewed him were much more contentious. I was very disappointed in Charlie Rose, my favorite, who was very aggressive with him.
I know about his awkward statement about the holocaust, but if it bothers people, they should have asked about it and discussed it. They should have also asked him was purpose of the meeting of holocaust deniers. If they did not want to discuss these things with him, and just make aggravated assumption, that is wrong. They should have been hospitable and polite, but they should have held his feet to the fire on his statements.
I was hoping they would myself, but they did not. I think at one point Ahmedinejad even said that he accepted that the holocaust happened, but it was not picked up by the MSM.
I'll be back later with a report, Phil etal. I'm getting kicked out of my meeting space and have to head out. Suffice to say it was a humbling experience. I was three rows behind her, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne - and her darling little baby grandaughter!
my point was our invasion of Iraq has caused similar displacement and death as what Turkey did to the Armenians (not to trivalize that, but it happened during WWI and was a part of many millions of deaths) and we are in as big a denial right now of what we are causing in Iraq
I can see a huge downside and a small upside by making a Federal issue of it, when there are present day fish to fry with Turkey
Thanks Phil and cC. I may have to just leave everything here and fly home to my trusted doctors. This is not a good place for a foreigner to have more than a cold or headache as a tourist. I'll know more tomorrow. Nice to know I can always fly home assuming there's a seat.
I haven't been following the Turkey thing that closely, but it sounds like more prelude to the ME blowing up. I've had to detach myself a bit, since I'm supposed to be having fun but am dealing with this groin thing. I spoke with a taxista who was wistfully wishing that the U.S. would disarm and encourage the rest of the world to do so too. He said the only thing that's making the U.S the most powerful nation in the world is the amount of bombs.....but isn't China a close second?
Now this Gore thing is really confusing. Isn't tomorrow the day? Doesn't he have to be there in person and where is there exactly?
Gore/?
You have a point, but it is just a statement if recognition, and has not legal or policy effects, right?
There are a lot of Armenian voters and they deserve to have their voices heard.
seashell, I'm so sorry you're having this. I hope it works out and you don't have to come home.
Gore does not have to be there. But when Boxer sent out a message that Al Gore had to postpone until next month..."because he had to take a flight abroad with possible great news on the Climate...." Everyone thought that's what was up.
It turns, something apparently is devloping with China, but the meeting got cancelled so he was able to stay and attend the Fundraiser.
.....click tocking for the announcement.... \/ (fingers crossed)
Friday is the day and he canceled a trip to China, I believe seashell.
anyway take care of yourself first
Amernians have a legitimate beef with Turkey, but I'm not sure it is a pressing interest for Congress if they are too busy to impeach
the Armenian complaints remind me of Cubans in Florida (which Congress would fall all over itself to get involved in if Fidel died)
real for sure, I'm not in the deny mode
There are huge present day consequences Fred. I think it might have been just the right touch to report it out of Committee if that is as far as it gets on the calendar, otherwise someone is pushing for a fight with Turkey (which is a lifeline to our troops)
screwy way to end the war if that is the intent
Turkey is the most important country on the planet in our attempts to favor moderates inside the Islamic struggle, and we are idiots or fools if we treat them cavalierly,
The worst timing - you have a point there.
Five years ago, in the late hours of October 10 and the early morning hours of October 11, Congress voted to authorize the president to use force against Iraq.
As we now know, the war that followed has been one of the greatest disasters of American foreign policy, fueled by mistruths and deception by George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
Eight days ago, while visiting New Hampshire, John Edwards apologized again for his vote as a United States Senator in support of the president's request. Please take a few minutes to watch the video and hear what he had to say last week:
It takes a person of courage and strength to admit to making a mistake. I'm proud of John for being prepared to stand-up and apologize for his vote—and to present a clear plan for ending the war in Iraq.
Eight days ago, while visiting New Hampshire, John Edwards apologized again for his vote as a United States Senator in support of the president's request.
There is no apology adequate for such awful judgement.
Congress should condemn the genocide against`Americans prior to the 20th century before it condemns it against Armenians.
A good point but I don't think one precludes the other, and not recognizing the Armenian genocide does not make recognizing the native American genocide any more feasible, if anything, it does just the opposite.
Thank you so much for coming to Michigan, Senator Thompson. Loved you in “The Hunt for Red October.”
[...]
This week’s debate was Thompson’s first, and he had to share the stage with eight other guys, some of whom have barely bothered to drop in on New Hampshire or Iowa and have no support outside their immediate families. The next time you see a nine-way presidential debate, people, tell yourself: This is being broadcast by lily-livered poltroons who are afraid of offending Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter. If the networks cut out the people who have no supporters, no campaign donations and who spend less time on the road than the average Mister Softee vendor, they could finish in an hour with far less viewer slippage.
You’ve got to say this about Fred Thompson. He’s one hell of a tall candidate.
Hi all,
Just a quick report from our reorginizational meeting here in Windham County Vermont. My friend who I nominated did get the chair position and I was elected vice-chair...just the way I hoped it would go. I also ended up as alternate delegate to the state committee though the previous chair was hoping I would run for for state delegate. The new secretary knows how to work on a website so this will free up a little time for me. I get to see Leahy, Sanders, Welch and the rest of our elected ones tomorrow, of course after I work a 9 hr. day and drive 2 hrs. But like Granny D says...Democracy is not something you have, democracy is something you do. There goes my fishing out the window.
May you heal quicky seashell, I'm sure the dance floor isn't the same without you.
"It takes a person of courage and strength to admit to making a mistake. I'm proud of John for being prepared to stand-up and apologize for his vote—and to present a clear plan for ending the war in Iraq."--
I agree, Phil. I heard John Edwards on NPR this week. I like him, I believed him.
Great news, Reed. Really proud of you standing up and taking on these roles. And as far as fishin' goes - remember, if ya can't fish it, ya can still eat it.
On Edwards
I was told that a local talk-radio (think constipatedervative) was provoking talk about Sen Edwards in an adulterous relationship while his wife suffers with cancer.
?
I do not need an apology for a vote on Iraq, but I am a minority in this regard. I actually tired of Sen Edwards repeated apology the third time I heard it.
I believe he is a good man with the best of intentions.
Isn't the eating part of fishing that's so enjoyable paine...it's the solitude for me. What be your prediction for the Sox?
I guess it will be a balance battle, which could go either way.
My prediction is that the nation will see on display (if they look) the best fans at Fenway Park - smart, tough, and animated.
Linda...I thank this blog and all of you...it was a big part of getting me involved (and of course Howard). Showing me the ropes, so to speak. In an old briefcase that I had started to use back in 2003 and decided to use today I found a few Howard Dean bumper stickers and Howard Powered People pin...how fitting.
===================
It is often more complicated than that.
The Native American genocide was done in small increments by thousands of different people over hundreds of year, how do you compare that to Stalin Stealing the winter food of Ukranians in the Autumn and starving 10 million of them to death in one year.
The terrible thing about the Jewish holocaust was the cold systematic, production line way it was done, to children and elderly first if they could not work - being more cruel than we are to livestock - based on their bloodline.
What the Israelis have done/are doing to the Palestinians is more like what we did to Native Americans.
Reed, how fitting indeed. Priceless moments...and memories.
I keep looking at my Howard Dean box. Because I just moved, It's on top out in the garage and I just got done getting tempted to open it up, but used better judgement or I would have probably not got done what I had to. :) And don't worry...I have a LOT out in the garage. Because I don't have a floor.....which is ok. I'd much rather live on cement than carpet anyhow, but I'm waiting for tile, so...the thought of some furniture and things being brought in, to only have to take apart and move again, doesn't make much sense. Besides, my bruises are only starting to disappear.
What's your prediction for the Indians v Red Sox, Reed?
Wow!!!! A huge clap of thunder just outside and pouring rain...better shut the puter down. Never lost a computer to lightning but two tvs have been trashed. Need to get some shuteye anyway.
I don't think it'll be that close paine...Sox in 4
Thanks for the cake Linda...us diabetics can have virtual cake...and even a real Molson from time to time...lol
It's zzzville for me.
Sorry for the delay, friends. I had to drive home and stop at In and Out Burgers for some real non-banquet food.
OK here we go....
I flew through the hotel with my business colleague in tow behind my conference manager, who was SO COOL to do this for me. Plug for the Westin St. Francis - great place for a real SF experience.
We're in the back of the house and opens up the curtain and seats me three rows behind Barbara, Bonnie and Jackson - as well as Barbara's family. I don't know who is who, but if she has a son, he was very nice. I had a chat with him in the elevator earlier but had no idea who he was at the time. I'm not sure if the grandbaby was his daughter. There were two other young women around who could have been her daughters.
So Barbara, in her very chic red suit, gets up on her literal soapbox (more like a veggie crate) to reach the mic. After her welcome talk, which was really very short, she introduced Bonnie and Jackson, as well as two other singers who were excellent. They harmonized really well on "World in Motion", the song I was listening to them rehearse earlier in the day. That was kind of fun, too. Bonnie spied me in the hallway, smiled and I asked her if they wanted privacy as the hallway was filling up. She said yes, so I shut the doors. Just can't leave the job behind...sigh.
The next song they did was "I'm a Patriot", composed by Steven van Zandt. You can see him performing it here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjiAfm6T4...
Then Bonnnie did my most favorite song, the John Prine tune "Angel from Montgomery." I'm a huge Prine fan, and her version always makes me tear up. She dedicated it to the women around the world that are "still having a tough time of it." Darn she has pretty hair! I took a few pix on my cell phone. She was playing with the kids sitting around her as Barbara took the stage again to introduce Al.
He took the stage in a really smart charcoal suit, looking really, really good. My business colleague was freaking out. I was just enjoying the moment. I won't go into what he spoke about in detail, as we all know what he cares about most these days. And he told some stories about the so called scientists who write to him to basically tell him he's full of it. (My words, not his). He talked about Darfur and how we could have prevented it, and still could, if we had our priorities straight. He didn't mention Burma, but he only spoke about 10 minutes. Ice caps, healthcare, a few jabs at the Bushies, but not by any particular name. Class act all the way.
Barbara came back on stage and related the story about when Gore was in front of the Senate and the whole thing with Inhofe. It was sweet how she motioned with the mic as if it was the gavel when she said "elections have consequences." And then the guy I think was her son ran on stage and gave her a campaign pin (Boxer 2010) with those words on it. I was able to snag a couple. Then she ends it with this gem. She said that some right wing website had some nasty things to say about her - at least they thought they were being nasty. But the headline of the post read "Boxer is the Al Gore of the Senate", and she said it was the best compliment she got in a long time!
There was a large party on the 32nd floor in Alexandra's, a wonderful room with a fantastic view. We had our breakfasts and lunches up there this week. I could have snuck up but I didn't want to push my luck. Nice way to end the week. Wish you all could have been there with me!
Oh yeah almost forgot....the whole room erupted in a long chant of Run Al Run. Boxer didn't try to stop it :)
One more story to share - sorry it's hard to remember it all in detail. He talked about the cities in Italy that have walls around them because they used to be at war, like Florence and Siena. And how absurd that seems to s now. Or how weird it is to think that, at one time, Germany invaded France - and he gave a nod to the Senior Citizens in the audience and thanked them for their perserverance during WWII. He took a moment then to give a shout out for our troops. Then he said that we can prevent another world disaster if we just band together and take the step to make things better - TOGETHER.
Paine you know, sometimes karma is actually good to me. I'm coming to Boston Oct. 24! Wish we could do lunch or something....
Denise, Thankful is out this way now. I think she'd make time for an opportunity to see you) She and I have eaten lunch together a number of times. Usually it's only an hour or one hour twenty minutes. It is getting more difficult to get days as Christmas approaches, but...
Paine I'll see if she'll be in town. She may be in Chicago during that time, not sure. I have a tight squeeze as well but let's keep it open. She can give you my email address. No pressure of course :)
DENISE!!! Wow, great report and a GREAT time, it seems.
I LOVE Bonnie. I was sorry her marriage with that actor failed. She is awesome and that smile...great. I loved her videos with Dennis Quaid. Oh well, I just think she's a cutie and so talented.
And, good to hear Mr. Gore dived in to so many important areas.
And even better that the crowd shared their support. :)
Yes, you are one lucky lady. When I saw you post St Francis, I almost thought you were talking about somewhere here in SF NM (the other SF) Fortuitous. You can send some my way. :)
Thank you again.
Sure thing Linda - I was thinking of you over the weekend as I was gazing at the stars over the desert sky. My friend lives in El Dorado on 3 acres. Lovely.
