Electoral initiative backers in California give up!

Written by: Sheri Divers on Sep 28, 2007 6:00 PM EDT

Best news I've heard today. Here's the latest from the Los Angeles Times:

BREAKING NEWS: Electoral initiative backers give up

Plagued by a lack of money, supporters of a statewide initiative drive to change the way California's 55 electoral votes are apportioned, first revealed here by Top of the Ticket in July, are pulling the plug on that effort.

In an exclusive report to appear on this website late tonight and in Friday's print editions, The Times' Dan Morain reports that the proposal to change the winner-take-all electoral vote allocation to one by congressional district is virtually dead with the resignation of key supporters, internal disputes and a lack of funds.

The reality is hundreds of thousands of signatures must be gathered by the end of November to get the measure on the June 2008 ballot.

Although Maine (since 1972) and Nebraska (since 1996) award electoral votes to the popular vote winner in each congressional district, the California initiative ignited a national controversy with Democratic critics charging it was a power grab by Republicans who are regularly shut out of any California electoral votes by the current winner-take-all system. Democrats have won all the state's 55 electoral votes in the last four presidential elections.

Nineteen of the state's 53 congressional districts are currently held by Republicans, giving them a fair chance of winning those electoral votes in a presidential election. The remaining two electoral votes would still go to the state's overall winner.

More here.

Dean is first.

Good deal, California.  The electoral process does need to be revamped.

But not this way.

Good! It was probably always a done deal anyway. You can get something on the ballot as an amendment, but to pass it with 50% of the vote is something else again when it does not benefit everyone.

For Immediate Release
September 28, 2007

Contact: Brian Brokaw (916) 444-8897

Statement from CDP Chairman Art Torres on the Apparent Demise of the GOP Steal the State Initiative

Sacramento -- Senator Art Torres (Ret.), Chairman of the California Democratic Party, today issued the following statement:

“In recent weeks, teams of CDP Fraud Busters throughout California spread the truth by going to locations where the Republicans were gathering signatures and telling would-be signers the truth about the so-called Presidential Election Reform Act.

“The partisan power grab initiative intended to rig the 2008 Presidential election became so entangled in its web of deception and fraud that it finally collapsed under its own weight.

“This time, the truth has prevailed. But Democrats must continue to be vigilant, as we know that the Republican Party will remain determined to attempt to steal elections in the future.”

I believe it is Dem Fla State Rep Steve Geller who is the loser here. He says Dean is not welcome in Fla and worse things than that. I just wonder if he wasn't one of the Dems pushing the primary vote in the first place.

Fed Projects a Four Year Long Recession - Mike Swanson (9/24/07)

Aside from the dollar and long-term bonds all markets went up last week as the Fed demonstrated that it is more fearful of a slowing economy and banking woes than inflation.... Now it is cutting rates in a huge way as the DOW is near its all-time high, gold is making new highs, and the price of oil is exploding.

...Bernanke built his career on a doctoral thesis that claimed that the Fed didn't cut rates fast enough during the 1929 stock market crash. But if you look at a chart of the Depression bear market with an overlay chart of interest rates you'll see that the Fed cut interest rates as the market topped....

While I was at the therapy pool today, I met a WW11 vet in a wheelchair (I don't know if his injury was from the war) and he had watched "The War."  He said, "I'm afraid that going into Iran will ignite a world war more horrific than any we've seen."  This from a WW11 vet.

The vets know...we know...that's why older women and men won't vote for Clinton...they know.

We also started talking about fascism and when I mentioned that we are now there, he got very upset.  I quickly backed off and then immediately *got* that he and his generation gave their all to stop Hitler and to think that now we have it on our soil would nullify all the maimed and dead.  In his mind.  So as he was leaving I thanked him for his service that helped make my life a better one.  He liked that.

This is very serious, this Iran thing, and very few are really paying attention.  And Clinton/Reid/Pelosi have given bush the permission to do as he likes.

44.
sea, you're right, the Germans didn't stop Hitler...perhaps it goes way past stopping Bush...who's gonna stop the corporations...in this country and beyond. Could it be it's the corporations that want to rule the world? The repubs and Bush are just in bed with them...but some Dems are learning quickly. Only and only if we can break the strangle hold the CM has on the public airways will it ever be done. The sheep will flock to the truth if they're told it by the MSM, many still believe what they see on tv. The internet is our last hope and this generation is paying attention. There were but a handful of students in the audience at the debate at Dartmouth and they made noise...thousands were outside making a lot of noise.
Fifty years ago, corporations paid 45% of the income taxes in America, they now pay 6% - 7%. I've seen this statistic a few time but most recently here...

http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/2007...

Add to that the fact that benefits keep getting cut the average worker in America gets hit with a double whammy...more taxes resulting in less spending dollars and more neccesities to spend those dollars on. Those huge CEO salaries and bonuses have to come from somewhere. Now the average household has to have a double income just to exist...no time for paying attention to confusing politics.

A democracy requires involvement of it's populace beyond voting I've learned since being inspired by Dean. With this involvemnet comes education...involvement + education = knowledge. With involvement + education + knowledge we have the informed voter which is needed for a democracy to survive.

btw...
Gravel is answering all the questions on youtube that he's not allowed to answer in the debates...smart move on his part. His videos are getting numerous hits now and all have high ratings. The CM wants to force Hillary down our throats but maybe, just maybe enough are sick of the same old high lie/low fact diet.

I have good news.

Earlier this week, we told you about a ballot initiative in California that would have changed the way the state's 55 electoral votes are distributed -- a change that Republicans believed would allow them to poach enough votes in California to win the White House.

The effort was sponsored by Bob Perry and others from the same "Swift Boat" campaign that smeared John Kerry in 2004. But this time, we stopped their dirty trick in its tracks.

This time, we won.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that the ballot initiative is dead -- at least for now.

Thousands of you took action and sent a strong message that we won't stand for Republican dirty tricks any longer. The California Democratic Party, and groups like Courage Campaign and Californians for Fair Election Reform, were also heavily involved and deserve a tremendous amount of credit for slowing this to a halt.

Working together, the power of ordinary Americans speaking out couldn't be ignored.

These so-called "reformers" weren't proposing to do this in Texas, Florida, Ohio, or any other large state that the Republicans won in 2004. Only California.

If the Republicans had been able to poach that many electoral votes from Democrats in California in 2008, it would have been the same as winning Ohio. We might as well have handed them the election on a silver platter.

But you fought back. And when we fight back, we win.

Thank you.

Howard Dean

Call it what you will--the tax intercept plan or the state tax swap plan. Either way it results in the same mess.

I was supposed to walk door to door with Ted Nixon, dfaROCHESTER member and candidate for Monroe County legislature, on Wednesday night. Those plans changed when we learned there would be an "special session" of the legislature. With very little notice, the legislature was called together to vote on three proposals to help solve our county's budget problems.

Republican Maggie Brooks and the Republican-controlled legislature literally rammed through legislation that resulted in a 50% cut in funding to schools, charge backs for the local community college will be added to tax bills and DMV fees went up.

Now more than ever it is clear that we need Democratic control of the legislature and one way to accomplish that is to help elect Ted Nixon.

Check out Ted's website....www.tednixon.com. Watch the videos! Make a contribution!

'07! < Doh!

Russert inflicted damage on Gravel at the debate on MSNBC a few nights ago.  Bankruptcy.  Gravel and Kucinich both suffered from Russert's question dealing with debt.

And I think it sucks that a suck up corporate hit man can have money shoveled to him.  Russert hasn't a clue what working people find value in.

There are a number of comments which made me smile that  I wanted to mention and quote but will not .  I am glad, but sad , to say that the level of sadness at the state of our nation (not party)  is alarming. "The Revolution will not be televised". Wage Peace. IMPEACH.   Speak Out !  I am a citizen , and not a party member. Does the constitution cover me if I do not belong to a party? If I say I am Independent, do Not confuse me with being a member of a party.  If I have a corporation can  I control, can I influence a politician for profits? Stop the Military Industrial complex.  Diane Feinstiein, your husband profits ( and you according to spousal law) by wars.  Wage Peace.Wake up if you think the Bill of Rights covers you.       Have a nice night.

Just heard on the NewsHour, apparently al Maliki was watching the vote on the Biden Amendment, says the Federalization of Iraq "could be a disaster" - like we don't have a disaster already under his watch?

He apparently is under the thumb of Shiites that will take him out at the drop of a hat.

Sicko (2007) | Review
A Powerful Call to Action

...For those concerned about the “Social Medicine” label, Moore also does a great job of illustrating social systems already in place in America, including Fire and Police services, libraries, and others that provide services to all people despite their ability to pay. I also appreciated that Moore went out of his way to show that the problem isn’t the doctors. He shows doctors in America who hate the system, and doctors in other countries who make great livings while at the same time following their passion to help people get better.

I love this film for its honesty and truthfulness. It moved me to realize that, as a Christian, I must do something more to assist those Christ went out of his way to love. Caring for the poor, providing for the sick, and so forth are foundational beliefs held by most all of the world’s religious groups.

My desire is that people around the world, especially America and her poor would STAND UP, be counted, be heard, and vote accordingly. It is a shame that many of those people needing a voice the most don’t vote. It is an even greater shame that many people with spiritual values find excuses to not live out those values.... full review: http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/movieDetai...

http://www.jamieforcongress.com/

Thank You From Jamie - September 13, 2007

Dear Supporters,

I cannot thank you enough for your support in my run for U.S. Congress.  Although we came up short, I am proud of what we accomplished through the campaign, and the momentum that has been built both to elect a Democrat for the 5th District, and to achieve a progressive agenda for Massachusetts, and our country.

When I decided to run in the special election to replace Congressman Marty Meehan, I knew that I wanted to accomplish three main goals as part of the campaign.

First, I wanted to run a strong grassroots campaign throughout the 5th District that involved both experienced activists and people new to politics, working side by side to communicate my progressive message.  Second, to run a campaign outlining a progressive agenda that offers real solutions to the country’s problems, including universal single-payer health care, ending the war in Iraq, fair trade over free trade, and taking dramatic action to stop global warming.  Finally, I wanted to make sure that the concerns of the people of all of the cities and towns of the 5th District were heard, including the smaller communities mostly found in the southern part of the district.

I am proud that all of these goals were accomplished, and I know that none of these successes would be possible without the support of individuals such as you.

In my involvement in politics over many years, it has always struck me how few Americans are actually engaged in political activity.  I have always believed very strongly that the reason that there aren’t more leaders in politics is that not enough people with the right intentions participate in politics to get good people elected to public office.  Your commitment to supporting candidates for public office contributes to a better quality of politicians across this country.

Whether you made a contribution to my campaign, went door to door, made phone calls, or volunteered on Election Day, I hope you realize what a significant difference you made in this race, and in my strong election results.  As the Democratic in this race coming from the smallest region of the district with only five years of service as an elected official, political pundits, elected officials and Democratic activists are all saying that I moved my opponents in the primary to the left, and my strong finish was unexpected.  I owe these glowing reports in part to you.

Of course, I ran for Congress to win, and I am certainly disappointed that I won’t be able to make a difference in Washington, D.C. on expanding access to health care, ending the war in Iraq, or taking dramatic action to stop global warming.  However, I am proud that these issues became the main focus of this race, and of the incredible efforts by staff and volunteers to make this a memorable campaign.

Now, I will be applying my same vision, with the same amount of hard work, to improving the lives of the people of the 37th Middlesex District as their State Representative, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  I hope I can count on your support in the challenges and campaigns that I will be embracing as part of that endeavor.

It is always hard to lose, but one of the strengths of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts is that a competitive primary leaves the Democratic nominee much stronger to defeat the Republican nominee.  I believe that is the case in this race, and that is why I am confident that with the same grassroots activity in the general election, Niki Tsongas will be the Congresswoman of the 5th District.

I wholeheartedly endorse Niki for U.S. Congress, and I have already begun to volunteer for her campaign, to make sure we have a Democrat representing the 5th District by the evening of October 16th.  I encourage you to volunteer and support her campaign which you can do by visiting her website at www.NikiTsongas.com or (978) 458-6454.  There are only four weeks left before the general election, so please get involved!

Thank you again for your support, I will never forget your commitment and dedication to my campaign, and my vision of how government can make a difference in people’s lives.

Sincerely,

Jamie Eldridge

I was a member of the Progressive Party of Vermont. I quit, because of the party politics, and ran as an Indepedent. The Dems and Progs wanted me to run as a party member, and I refused.  This  thought is sorry.  The party politics is wasting as much (30 %) of my efforts as healthcare does without a single payer system. What  Dem. should I vote for? Help? Actually I want a candidate to hire for my, and your future. Sitka I put you on the spreadsheet.

Did anyone else watch the Ike Presidential Library? It was very good -- I can't get over how fast 2 hours can go. The very best moment and it was just a flash was a fountain pen on loan from Dwight David Eisenhower II (the one who married Julie Nixon). The fountain pen is the one the Germans signed an unconditional surrender in 1945. The historians et al say there is no evidence of a romantic affair he had with Kay Somersby. Another interesting fact -- Admiral Byrd of Arctic fame sent his St. Christopher's medal to Ike. Also when Ike made his farewell speech it was not only a warning about the military-industrial complex, but also about the nation getting into hock for generations. They said Ike was a fiscal conservative and social progressive which sounds like Dr. Dean (and me). The guy sure had a sparkle in his eye. Ah for some leadership.

Guess that's all for tonight.

Glad you enjoyed Demfest, and Jessica is a dear, but why would she support and run a campaign for someone who supported the war (Steve Howard /MayorRutland, spent 20,000 for 600 or less votes)?  We all need to admit to our errors, and not fall for the party b.s. , unless we are in this for the long haul , and looking for future campaign jobs and websites dollars. Look at Dean link for Rutland Vermont. The Chairs Patty and j have not beeen the heads since awhile. The membership is not what is says, and what is the date of the last posting? Looks like Enron. I started it ,and now it is a joke. I would be glad to get it to the original message.    I am tired of people coming to this site to promote what will benefit them. I have a goal to benefit the people.      (can of bee's opened?) Sorry, wage peace.
