A city employee in Baquba, the capital of Diyala Province, vividly described his ambivalence.

“The withdrawal of the occupation forces is a must because they have caused the destruction of Iraq, they committed massacres against the innocents, they have double-crossed the Iraqis with dreams,” said the worker, Ahmad Umar al Esawi, a Sunni. “I want them to withdraw all their troops in one day.”

Dropping his voice, he continued: “There is something that I want to say although I hate to say it. The American forces, which are an ugly occupation force, have become something important to us, the Sunnis. We are a minority and we do not have a force to face the militias. If the Americans leave, it will mean a total elimination of the Sunnis in Iraq.” ...

The speech by La Follette that Rich found is worth reposting.  I've left it on the Dodd blog for their edifications.  LOL

so perhaps it's not necessry to repost it here.  If you go to hannah, you get to see the Howardly spinning on its pedestal.

I've already been to Bluehampshire and left the following observation, among others....

I think people become Republicans because they've learned that making mistakes is a really bad thing.  If there's only one rule--to be obedient--and one follows that, the chance of making a mistake is greatly reduced.

This attitude affects how Republicans view their leaders.  Leaders make choices for them and, as expected, those choices lead to mistakes, which the followers are ever so glad that they didn't make.  So, they forgive the mistakes  and even honor the leaders' efforts.  It looks like they're rewarding failure.

People who identify themselves as Democrats are not only doers, but they have no fear of making mistakes and are, therefor, more flexible in changing direction.  But, if the public castigates them for that virtue, then there's a chance that Democrats, too, will become inhibited by their mistakes and get stuck in the quagmire that, in the current instance, their mistaken support for a liar helped create.

If people want to blame Democrats, let them.  I just hope it won't affect their ability to change direction going forward.

BTW, if my assessment of Republicans is accurate, they don't much care who makes decisions, as long as they don't have to do it themselves. But, we shouldn't expect them to respond to Democratic success with the same adulation they accord Republican failure. Because, if they did, Democrats just might expect them to make choices and that's the last thing they want to do.
"Just say no to choice"  That's the Republican motto.

CLINTON, Iowa (CNN) — Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama warned the Bush administration against expanding the war in Iraq to neighboring Iran, telling an Iowa audience Wednesday that he hears "eerie echoes" of the rhetoric that led up to the invasion of Iraq.

"George Bush and Dick Cheney must hear loud and clear from the American people and the Congress: You do not have our support, and you do not have our authorization, to launch another war," he said.

The Illinois senator's comments came during a speech on the future of the 4-year-old war in Iraq, which he said has only bolstered Iranian influence.

OK..............whatever...........did I ever tell you I almost joined the Navy in 1974 at 18?  No shit......not for defending country and all that malarky, but to travel, see the world, etc.............2 problems........

West Virginia prosecutors are to bring state kidnap charges against six white people accused of abusing and torturing a black woman for a week.

The prosecutors opted not to pursue race hate charges with a penalty of 10 years, going instead for kidnapping which carries a maximum life term.

The six allegedly beat, stabbed and sexually assaulted the woman, while using a racial slur.

Prosecutors say the woman had been in a relationship with one of the six.

Megan Williams, 20, and her mother, Carmen, agreed to release her name to the media, saying they wanted people to know what she had endured.

Mrs Williams said she was "horrified" by her daughter's injuries.

"I don't understand a human being doing another human being the way they did my daughter. I didn't know there were people like that out there," she said.

Choking

Ms Williams was discovered on Saturday when an anonymous tip-off led police to a remote hillside house in Big Creek, Logan County. She staggered towards them crying "Help me", officers said.
