Louisiana DFA-List Candidates / Anti-War Rallies in DC (Last night on DFA Radio)

Written by: Lewis Miller on Sep 5, 2007 7:47 AM EDT

Linked to groups: DFA Radio

Tuesday night's DFA Radio show was a thought-provoking program with outstanding guests. If you missed our live show, you can listen to the archive or podcast at BlogTalkRadio.com/dfa. Joining us this week were:

  • DFA-List candidates for the Louisiana Legislature, Deborah Langhoff and Angelique LaCour. Deborah and Angelique braved the aftermath of Katrina and are fighting to rebuild their communities. They told the stories of how the Bush administration abandoned New Orleans and their visions of setting things right again. We're sure when you listen to their stories, you'll join Democracy for America in contributing your time and money to send Deborah and Angelique to the Statehouse in Baton Rouge.
  • Larry Holmes of the Troops Out Now Coalition. TONC has organized one-week encampment at the Capitol beginning on September 22nd, culminating in a September 29th march on Washington, as part of a two-month antiwar 'surge' to stop the war "at home and abroad". There will also be a parallel encampment and march in Los Angeles. Larry described Bush administration actions as "war crimes" and said that the people of this nation must act now to pressure members of both parties in Congress to prevent war with Iran and end the occupation of Iraq.
  • NJ Peace Action 50th Anniversary LogoMadelyn Hoffman, Director of NJ Peace Action, a 50-year-old organization dedicated to peace and justice and part of the National Peace Action Network. Peace Action and United for Peace & Justice are currently promoting a campaign to flood Congress with calls to end the war in Iraq and prevent a new war with Iran this Thursday, September 6th.
We also talked about the upcoming September 15th March on Washington, organized by A.N.S.W.E.R., Veterans for Peace, and a coalition of veterans' groups. If your DFA group supports these efforts, keep in mind that all of these events are looking for volunteers and coalition partners.

Don't forget to listen to the entire program at BlogTalkRadio.com/dfa.

About our guests:

Deborah Langhoff for LA State House- 94Deborah Langhoff for Louisiana State House, District 94
Deborah Langhoff lost her house, her business, and her community to flooding when the levees broke. But she didn't despair; Deborah attended the DFA Training Academy in Baton Rouge this past June, and now she's running for state office. She says it best: "Civic activism drives our recovery from the Katrina Disaster."

Angelique LaCour for LA State House-77Angelique LaCour for Louisiana State House, District 77
Angelique LaCour is running a true grassroots campaign, getting her friends and family involved, reaching out to her community, and working to rebuild the infrastructure of her state. Hurricane Katrina flooded her business in New Orleans, but didn't slow her down. Now she's determined to win a Democratic seat in her district, a Republican stronghold. "We know we are the party of the people," she says. "The party that's going to raise our quality of life."

http://www.troopsoutnow.org/photos/larry-holmes.jpgLarry Holmes, Troops Out Now Coalition
The Troops Out Now Coalition (TONC) is a national grassroots coalition of antiwar activists, trade unionists, solidarity activists and community organizers. TONC activists first assembled in New York City for a December 3, 2004 National Strategy Meeting and issued a call for a day of protest on March 19, the second anniversary of the beginning of the war. As we enter a new phase of the antiwar struggle, TONC believes that the only force that will stop the war is a militant, multinational, grassroots movement.

Madelyn Hoffman, NJ Peace ActionMadelyn Hoffman, Director, NJ Peace Action
NJ Peace Action is the New Jersey affiliate of Peace Action, the nation's largest grass roots organization. Peace Action was founded as SANE (later to become SANE/Freeze) in 1957. Its goals are: abolish nuclear war, promote a more peaceful economy, bring an end to weapons trafficking, encourage non-military solutions to international conflicts, and promote conflict resolution at all levels. NJ Peace Action has always been one of the most active groups in the National Peace Action Network.

About DFA Radio:

Robin Kinlin, Co-Host, DFA Radio
Robin is the chair of the Berkeley Township Municipal Committee and the president of the Bayville Chapter of the Berkeley Township Democratic Club. She currently serves on the Executive Board of New Jersey for Democracy and as organizer of Ocean County DFA/PDA. Robin lives in Ocean County, NJ, with her husband and teenage daughter. Her background in radio includes several years at Shadow & Metro Traffic in New York City.

Lewis Miller, Co-Host, DFA-Radio

Compressed air?  Is that dirty air or clean air?  If clean air, wherever will they find it?  :-)

So were some terrorists really caught in Germany or do we need to get the *to be impeached* prez out of the news and away from Keithie?  Putz has now been changed to TBI  - to be impeached!  We need to focus on getting cheney and putz outta office.

2. Nice Montage Sitka.

For everyone's info, a snippet from Jim Kunstler's latest:

http://www.kunstler.com/mags_diary22.html

What does reality command? Well, first of all (and especially for the benefit of the enviro-progressives I have met recently, who want gold medals for buying hybrid cars) we'd better drop the idea that there is any way whatsoever to preserve our system of happy motoring. The car as a mass market phenomenon, and enabler (dictator, really) of all our daily life arrangements, is finished. We'd better find something else to talk about, or the American future will amount to little more than a colossal circle-jerk on an increasingly unfixable freeway. I am hugely worried (obviously) that even the intelligent-and-educated fraction of our society cannot focus on anything but how to keep all the cars running. A failure to drop this, and move on to more practical endeavors, will lead automatically to a failure of reasonable politics in this country. It is already manifest in the abysmal failure of the Democratic candidates for president to address the looming oil import crisis that will certainly be underway as soon as any of them is inaugurated.
Reality commands that we prepare to rebuild our small towns and small cities and downsize our gigantic metroplexes. Reality commands that we get serious about local food production and local economies. Reality commands that we rebuild the kind of public transit that people will be grateful to travel on. Reality commands that we prepare to rebuild our harbor facilities for a revival of maritime trade, using ships and boats that do not necessarily run on oil. Reality commands that we put an end to legalized gambling, in order for the public to re-learn one of the primary rules of adult life -- that we generally should not expect to get something for nothing.

Fred,
Step 9 talks about not forcing folks to move.
Step 10 talks about form a united nation.
But I can see where you would think they are complementary.
After all, Biden talks about unforced moving.
A nation can be united even if there are three seperate area.

The smart move is memorize and do step 5. We don't have any positive influence in the outcome. As always, you ignore the fact that since 1998, we have been killing Iraqis and the locals will never forgive us.
The only move is for us to stay out of the procedure.

The Kurds don't count in the Sunni/Shiiate dialog.
The Kurds will have to deal with Turkey and Iran.

Since it is time for the 300 entry circular discussion about why Biden wrote a nice term paper that cannot be implemented because the implementees hate us, I am leaving for the night.

Enjoy the bubble.

=======================

Well, glad to see everything developing.  Even if Dems get elected in 2009 - we could still have filibusters while soldiers and civilians are dying.  Kurds are important.  Washington likes them but they can be just as troublesome if the area disintigrates. bbl

If Kucinich is elected, they'll be on their way home before he's inaugurated. No other Democratic candidate ( other than Mike Gravel) can make that statement.

The lease is signed, the check is handed over, and Thankul is a Massachusetts...ite.

I've been messaging with Ron Paul 08'ers on youtube, and it is disgusting how all the mouth-breather republicans are attacking anyone, especially their fellow Repugs who believe in Paul's non-interventionist foreign policy.  Calling them and him traitors is the mild end of the spectrum.  They make the other candidates look warm and fuzzy.

One Biden Plan is enough.

=============

So far I'm one of the few who've invested in Biden's idea.  It is starting to take shape already in different ways in different geographical places.  It doesn't have to be "Biden's Plan" per se.  The idea is what is important and even Republican moderates on the occupation are starting to send innuendoes of a "responsible withdrawal"

dog's post (see 6.) is a good example of the initiative taken on the same idea taken by the Iraqis themselves.  If things work out, the bigger picture may not be called "Biden's Plan" but the elements of the Initiative, with which Biden has been laboring for a year now, will be in the heart of the U.S. Congress side of the participation - just wait and see.

My grammar teacher was nicknamed "tweety" by the adolescents I ran with at the time and we would make bets as to how fast we could make him come around a hall corner by someone letting out a quiet, yet clearly audible "meow".

I always considered people who thought high school the "best years of your life" to be losers, but they did have their moments.

I only bring that up on a political blog, because the decider nicknames everyone, so I'm thinking he is stuck back in those halls somewhere, re-living ninth grade.

Phil, sometimes I think you are being petty about insinuating his ego-centricity.  If that's your greatest-only complaint - well that's great.

But Biden takes the gamble, not the credit,  for this plan (of course, at his age there isn't much left to gamble)

However, having said that - I say thank you for valuing the plan so much that you put such a premium on the name - subconsciously inadvertant or not - it is a nice compliment and is appreciated.

I accept your point and it is well taken - however I must admit that his "egocentricity" is in the eye of the beholder.  I have always enjoyed his energy and enthusiasm.  If Kerry had it in the debates, we would not have Bush for President today.

I never saw it as an ego trip - although I can appreciate why you, or someone more skeptical of him, would see it as such.  Show me a politician or musician with no ego, and I'll show you a cat without a tail.

See post 6. - dog had a link back in the last thread.  It seems a lot like the vision Biden has.  It is taking shape in many forms and many places as we speak.   The "Biden plan" is really not his plan in the bigger picture.  It was just his promoting the idea that our country should participate in this kind of responsible political solution, as we exit.

Short on Labor, Farmers in U.S. Shift to Mexico

CELAYA, Mexico — Steve Scaroni, a farmer from California, looked across a luxuriant field of lettuce here in central Mexico and liked what he saw: full-strength crews of Mexican farm workers with no immigration problems.

“I’m as American red-blood as it gets,” Mr. Scaroni said, “but I’m tired of fighting the fight on the immigration issue.”...

Motion to prevent Bush from bombing Iran...we don't want to be obstructionists.  Leave Iraq....we don't want to be responsible if things go poorly.  Impeach....off the table.
Republican lite Democrats, the cockroaches Dean once talked about before he became a big tent guy, the DLC....firmly in control. Do what the American people elected us to do....forget that.  Why bother.
