Jim Dean Responds to Rep. Jay Inslee's Impeachment Resolution Against Gonzales

Written by: Sheri Divers on Aug 1, 2007 12:56 PM EDT

BURLINGTON, VT – Yesterday, Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to consider impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA), issued the following statement in response to the introduction of this impeachment resolution:

"One thing is clear.  Alberto Gonzales is no longer fit to serve as the Attorney General of the United States.  If President Bush won't fire him, then Congress must exercise its constitutional authority and impeach the Attorney General.  Democracy for America supports today's resolution calling for the Judiciary Committee to investigate impeachment of the Attorney General.  Only after Gonzales is gone can integrity be restored to the Justice Department."

Democracy for America has been conducting a nationwide Impeach Gonzales campaign for the past 4 months. Our local groups delivered a petition signed by over 80,000 concerned Democracy for America members to the office of Rep. John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and several other pertinent committee members earlier this summer. This petition was a culmination of our Impeach Gonzales campaign including a two minute video Impeach Gonzales II: The Crimes and a series of prominent ads which ran in The Hill, the New York Observer, Detroit Metro Times and the Los Angeles Daily News. Both the film and the ads can be viewed online at www.impeachgonzales.org

No, Dean is first.

And our electric service is fixed.

I'm thinking that maybe we should have a project where everyone throws their main breaker on their circuit panel and just uses the power for three hours a day, like they do in Baghdad.

Insley IS mine!  Or close to me anyway.  McDermott is actually mine, but Insley's office is about 4 miles from my house and he attends our LD meetings regularly.  McDermott signed on to Kuchinichs' for impeaching Darth Cheney, so I'm fairly confident that he will sign on to this one as well.

I also like Conyers and I wish he'd sign on with Kucinich.

FWI, I also post points of view that are not those of most of us. I

And I do admire what Japan is doing about transporation.

So when do impeachment proceedings against Cheney begin?

Obama has many young people supporting him.  What do they know or remember about nukes and the devastation they cause? Do they have a clue about Pakistan? I doubt it.  It's style over substance and the Obama campaign knows this is how to capture the naive youth vote; hence the offensive, IMO, Obama girls, who,IMO, are being exploited sexually.  Frankly I find him and his campaign manipulative, deceptive, sexually exploitive.  Between his views on the *war on terror,* Pakistan and  AIPAC, I find him downright scary.  And he's bright enuf to fool enuf people to get elected.

In the Kos poll, Clinton is leading  with Obama in second.

Is the fix in?

More than 150,000 of our brave men and women are in a war zone, and Dick Cheney doesn't think Congress should know about how we are planning to bring them home.

Well I do, and I won't stop putting pressure on this administration until I know they have a plan to bring our troops home safely.

But it's not just that Cheney doesn't think Congress should have oversight -- he thinks those of us who do are "reinforcing enemy propaganda."

It is time to find out exactly where the Bush administration stands on this issue. I'm going to send a letter to President Bush, and I want your name to be on it. Join me in calling on him to plan for the safe withdrawal of our troops.

Here's the whole story. Back in May, concerned about the administration's failure to plan in Iraq, I sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates asking him to provide Congress with briefings of contingency plans for withdrawal -- or an explanation of why no such plans exist.

Two weeks ago, Under Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman responded in a letter that said discussing plans for withdrawal "reinforces enemy propaganda." It was an outrageous response -- and a dangerous one. Planning for withdrawal isn't just common sense. It is vital to ensuring our troops return home safe.

Secretary Gates quickly disavowed Edelman's letter, saying he encouraged Congressional oversight and promising to respond to my original inquiry.

But in an interview with Larry King that aired last night on CNN, Vice President Cheney said he agreed with Edelman's assertion that Congress asking the Pentagon to plan for our troops' safe return "reinforces enemy propaganda."

So which is it, President Bush? Do you support the safe return of troops from Iraq, or are you going to continue to play politics with their lives?

Let's ask him together:

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/iraq

I couldn't care less what Dick Cheney says about me. But when he plays politics with the lives of our troops, you had better be sure I'm going to respond. And I know that you want to respond too.

Thank you for joining me in calling on President Bush to plan for the safe return of our troops from Iraq, and for the support you show me every day.

Sincerely,
Hillary

This week we got the chance to see the final bill, and I am pleased to say I will proudly support this landmark legislation.

The final ethics bill, which has already passed the House, includes a strong lobbyist gift ban, tough new restrictions on privately funded travel and corporate jet flights, much needed additional disclosure of lobbying activities, unprecedented new disclosure of all of the ways that lobbyists provide financial support to members of Congress, including bundling campaign contributions, a provision to slow the revolving door between the halls of Congress and the lobbying world, and earmark reform.

This is an issue that I've worked on since first coming to the Senate in 1992.  And while I wish the final bill would have been even stronger, this legislation represents a dramatic change in the way business is done in Washington, D.C.

Now there is much more work to do.  Congress still isn't moving as fast as either you or I would like on a number of issues - specifically on safely redeploying our brave men and women in uniform out of Iraq.  But passing this strong ethics reform package is a giant step toward getting our country back on track.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold
United States Senator
Honorary Chair, Progressive Patriots Fund

P.S. - Congress must also deal with an administration run amuck.  I will be formally introducing my two censure resolutions - holding the President, Vice President, and administration accountable for their mishandling of the situation in Iraq and for their blatant disregard for the rule of law - later this week. However, I'm still making last minute changes and would welcome your feedback.  If you haven't done so already, please take a moment and send me your thoughts on this vitally important issue.  Thanks again for all that you do.

I disagree with Jim when he says that  "Only after Gonzales is gone can integrity be restored to the Justice Department."

Does anyone really think that Cheney/Rove will vote for integrity?

Another pawn will somehow be put in place or perhaps there will be an *event* here at home...or  how about a recess appointment after Gonzo decides he needs to spend more time with his family?  Remember, they are running out the clock and doing it masterfully.

To restore integrity, we have to get rid of Cheney.  Period.  IMHO

Last week, the minimum wage rose for the first time in ten years, a real victory for the millions of Americans who struggle to make ends meet.

We have also produced other common-sense legislation that is popular across the political spectrum. Yet, despite the support of a clear majority of the American people, President Bush continues to oppose public sentiment and has even promised to veto these bills.

It's the same approach we have seen time and time again with this President, especially regarding his refusal to change course in Iraq.

I want you to rest assured that Democrats are listening to the American people, and we remain firm in our commitment to bring our troops home as soon and as safely as possible.

My fellow Democrats and I will continue to fight for what Americans need and care about. Our country faces great challenges, but with your support, I have no doubt that they are challenges we can overcome.

Sincerely,

Louise Slaughter

When Carter was running for president in 1976, a young Amy often traveled with him and Rosalyn on the campaign trail.

Ditto Bill Clinton with a young Chelsea and Hillary.

The kids looked like they were having fun as well as the spouses.

But hey, if some see that  as explotation, then all I can say is zounds - that's a whopper of a generalization and of a stretch of what that term exploitation (ie. "exploited sexually") means.

Less money and aid to Sierra Leone and your wife's family

...

Thanks for being concerned.

The U.S. doesn't currently give much aid at all to Sierra Leone or any other African country (excluding Egypt).  Great Britian, which has troops fighting in Afghanistan against al Qaeda and the Taliban, is the main supplier of aid to Sierra Leone.

The people of Sierra Leone have not forgotten what Britian did to help weed out terrorism in Sierra Leone (the terrorism of the RUF that hacked off civilians hands and feet) in 2000, by Tony Blair ordering in British commandos into the heart of the capital of Freetown, where the rebels had conquered half of the city.

Seven years later, next week on 8/8/07, Sierra Leoneons, including many expatriates, will be voting in long lines for a president and a parliament.  My wife and I will be visiting there next Oct.

As for Obama, he's already indicated that he's interested in giving more aid and attention to his ancestorial homeland continent of Africa.

Finally, IMO we'll have a president who can walk and chew gum the same time (not choke on pretzels or pork rinds).

I already said that if Gore decides to enter the race for U.S. President, I will seriosuly have to make a decision if my support for Obama for president still stands as strongly as it does now.

But since Gore has not announced, for now I'm not on the fence and obviously haven't been since this past Jan when Obama announced.

(FYI  - I don't want a repub, the likes of a Romney, as our next President, and will do whatever I can to ensure that.  I've already seen what he can do as my governor and IMO it was not a pretty sight.)

The young people of this coiuntry had better expand their boundaries of intelligence alot farther than ipods, razors, american idol and skateboards.............if candidates like obama want to rant on about war and conflicts then they had better figure out just who will do the fighting on these adventures................

They can start with reading a little foreign policy history first, and how this country got itself int the current mess that its in.............its not as simple as good guys and bad guys anymore..........

I hop on my bike this Saturday. This race raises money for cancer research and treatment. We've made great strides in those areas; I'm living proof of that -- but those we all know and love who weren't so lucky remind us we have more miles to go than there are miles in this race.

So, please, go here and support my ride with a pledge of support. Help raise money for this important cause.

The money raised will go to the Jimmy Fund. Anyone who grows up in New England knows all about the Jimmy Fund. As a New Englander, I still remember those photos in the newspaper and those ads between innings -- the images of our heroes Ted Williams and Yaz asking each of us to pitch in to help children struggling to beat cancer. There's a reason The Jimmy Fund sign is there on The Green Monster in Fenway Park, a fact which will be brought home to all of us in Red Sox Nation when Jon Lester pitches from the Fenway mound for the first time very soon on his own courageous comeback journey. This is an outstanding charity that has done decades of important work, and last year this race represented a full 50% of the income of the Jimmy Fund. So this is a very important event for a cornerstone organization in our fight against cancer.

Please help me support the Jimmy Fund.

Thank you,

John Kerry

BIDEN/LUGAR RESOLUTION CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE DEPLOYMENT OF UN PEACEKEEPERS TO DARFUR UNANIMOUSLY PASSES SENATE

Washington, DC – Last night, just hours after the U.N. The poll is not for who you WANT to win, it's for who you THINK will win. Deceiving, don't know why they did it.

Just saw "SICKO" with 75 other Dems.

What I wanna know is, how do we get our government to be afraid of us, instead of the other way around.

Other countries get out into the streets, and their gov'ts fear them. For some reason Americans think that isn't "nice". I wonder why that is, brainwashed, stupid, afraid, lazy, they don't know which street?

The things we're doing aren't working too well, so we keep doing them, and we expect a different result?

Dear Linda,

Do you remember the George Allen "macaca" video?

That piece of coverage played an instrumental role in the election of Senator Jim Webb-- and winning back the United States Senate last year. But that turning point in Senator Webb's campaign would not have been possible without his dedicated staff members following George Allen's every move.

That's the kind of work we're doing here at the Democratic Party of Virginia. As the Research Director, I'm working to build a Party apparatus that can immediately respond to the missteps and lies told by the Republicans who are trying to maintain control of the General Assembly.

Today, we launched a new website dedicated to shining a spotlight on just how far out of touch Republicans are in this state. TheyDontGetVA.com is a new project for tracking the often strange, sometimes corrupt behavior of Virginia's more extreme candidates for office.

But this kind of tracking and research takes money. So I'm asking you to help us support your Democratic candidates by making a donation.

Hold them accountable by visiting our secure contribution page today.

We need your support to make sure voters know exactly what our opponents are saying. How else would we have caught George Allen in his "macaca" moment?

This week alone, Bill Bolling is holding two town hall meetings where he'll claim he wants to improve public education - then he's off to raise money for a state Senate candidate who wants to eliminate public education altogether!

This is the kind of extremist ideology we need to fight. It's the kind of extremist ideology we want to make sure isn't turned into Virginia policy. And it's exactly that extremist ideology that is out of step with Virginians. They just don't get Virginia!

And that's why we've launched this new website. Help us set up a state-of-the-art operation to bypass the media and take the story of their lies, flip-flops, and out-of-whack priorities directly to you.

I spend my days going through Republican documents, speeches, and video archives -- finding discrepancies in their speeches, holding them accountable for their shameless pandering, fact-checking their statements, and establishing a larger narrative to frame our opponents. We need your help to make sure we have the resources to get the job done right.

This is the information we need to know -- and we need your help to make it happen. That's how we'll win in November! So please donate today.

See you in the field!

Sincerely,

Greg Scanlon
Research Director, DPVA

What I wanna know is, how do we get our government to be afraid of us, instead of the other way around.

Audrey,

Forget it love...........not here...........guns, cops................did you know that shortly after WW1, VETERANS, yes VETERANS of that war marched on Washington...................cant recall what it was about, maybe health care........anyways, they were trampled by horses and police guading the capitol.....................

Remember Kent State?  Chicago 1968?  Freedom pens in 2004?  Thos countries you mentioned are not as divided as this one is...............thats the problem..............idiotic republicans will kill for anothr aircraft carrier or marine battalion and meanwhile their kids go uneducated and no health care....................

Thats the differance I see............

Michael,
This should about cover the march of the Bonus Army.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonus_Army

It was in 1932 and hungry vets wanted their bonuses now instead of later. They were refused and Gen MacArthur rode the army on them. One of the army leaders doing the damage was George Patton.
A year later, Pres Roosevelt sent Eleanor to negotiate and the troops signed up to build the road connecting Key West to the mainland. This action a year earlier led to Hoovers's defeat and the settlement led to the GI Bill of Rights (which is how I went to college).

Look at this contradiction.  Obama is running away with it.  Are these our very own blog readers who like the idea of Pakistan with nukes/terrorists?  Goodness.

Hillary Increases Lead to 21 Points by Berkeley Vox Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 10:07:41 AM PDT

After breaking the 40-percent high-water mark last week in a string of national polls, Hillary Clinton keeps inching upwards and padding her lead.
According to both today's NBC/Wall Street Journal poll and today's Rasmussen daily Presidential tracking poll, she now has a 21-point lead over the rest of the field.

audrey

what is interesting(or not) is that the bandwagon effect is powerful enough that polls asking the question that way before the caucus are more accurate (sadly) the question I asked about second choice above

right now the anti corporatist  list of viable candidates in Iowa is one

the good news is he continues to lead

but Obama is framing his domestic dialogue to triangulate Edwards and his pro-military talk is just enough out. now. to position himself inside Clinton so he gains on both fronts this week

the past week has been Obama's best so far, he has a good team

seashell,
Am puzzled...
Bombing Pakistan makes it more likely that the nukes will become available to other terrorists. Even if bin Laden is killed, so will a lot of others which will breed more terrorists.

I am really tired of politicians who sell out their own beliefs. Both Hillary and Obama are showing lacks of principles. They need to stop seeing how high they can pee on the fence post.
There was a blog on Huffington where the author essentially said that bombing is cool; just don't invade.
The last I heard, bombing is an invasion.

Strong Earthquake in Vanuatu

Wednesday August 1, 2007 7:46 PM

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) - A strong earthquake struck Thursday off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, originating far below the ocean floor.

The 7.2 quake, which hit at 4:08 a.m. local time, didn't trigger any tsunamis around the archipelago and little damage was expected because it originated 108 miles beneath the ocean's surface, said Waverly Person, a geophysicist with U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center.

The earthquake hit 28 miles southeast of the Vanuatu town of Luganville and 1,240 miles northeast of Brisbane, Australia.

Message from the Solar Nation Action E-List

TAKE ACTION: SOLAR ENERGY TAX CREDIT VOTE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Solar Energy Tax Credit Vote this Week!

Congress has just a couple of days before summer recess to vote on the House energy tax package, HR2776. This package, if passed by both houses, will provide much-needed benefits for those installing and using solar energy.

In order for the final version of the energy bill to include the solar tax credits, it's vital that HR2776 passes the full House. But timing is crucial, so we're asking you to make a special effort to call your Representative's office and urge him or her to vote in support of the bill. If passed, remember, it will create tens of thousands of quality jobs and help promote the use of clean, renewable solar energy throughout the U.S.

IMPORTANT POINTS YOU CAN MENTION:

* I am a constituent in your district who supports solar energy.
* I strongly encourage you to support solar energy by voting in favor of HR2776, the energy tax title.
* HR2776 will increase our energy security, reduce pollution, and create tens of thousands of clean energy jobs.
* I work for (name of company) in the Congressperson’s district (describe the company).

Please take a few minutes to call your Representative as soon as possible, to get a 'YES' vote on HR2776. Enter your ZIP code and follow the link; we will provide you with the phone number of your Representative.

TAKE ACTION NOW! http://capwiz.com/re-action/callalert/in...

Are Vaccinations Safe for Your Kids?

=======================

Pat Roberts and the "700 Club" get into the vaccine debate.  I was really surprized to see this.  A very good report too, spot on with the facts,  nothing about HPV in the video....

...Now a June survey of more than 10,000 families suggests the problems are more than speculative.
It found teenage boys vaccinated as children were:

--Twice as likely to suffer from autism
--Four times as likely to have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
--And boys and girls of all ages - vaccinated as children - were more than twice as likely to have developed asthma.

At one time, Beth Miers thought vaccine critics were kooks.

"That's crazy, why would you not vaccinate your child?" Meirs believed. "You want to put your child in danger of developing those diseases? And so I really did think these people were way out there."
But her mind changed in March when a doctor found that her....

Michael....

Gov'ts being afraid. was the point being made in "Sicko". I was advocating more impressive marches.

Yes, I'm familiar with Kent, my daughter was a student there. I was there myself in the demonstration previous to the killings. She called me to tell me she thought the Repub. students were trying to provoke an incident.

Yes, also Chicago. McCarthy asked us all to try to keep the volunteers home, he said he feared for their safety in Chicago. We had a big picnic that day, but it didn't work. As soon as the picnic was over they left for Chicago. My husband and I followed the next morning when we saw what happened.
