Why does Chertoff still have a job?

Written by: Sheri Divers on Jul 11, 2007 11:42 AM EDT

Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff tells the media he has a bad feeling that terrorists are about to strike without any credible evidence. And  national media outlets lead with this non-story pulling attention away from the GOP senators slinking away from the war and Bush's Nixon era approval ratings:

"Summertime seems to be appealing to them," Chertoff said in his discussion with the newspaper about terrorists. "We worry that they are rebuilding their activities."

Other U.S. counterterrorism officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared Chertoff's concern and said that al Qaeda and like-minded groups have been able to plot and train more freely in the tribal areas along the Afghan-Pakistani border in recent months. Osama bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, are believed to be hiding in the rugged region.

"The threat coming out of there is very real, even if there aren't a lot of specifics attached to it," one of the officials said.

Chertoff's department has not made any move to increase the U.S. color-coded terror alert system. Now, airlines are under orange — or high — alert, which is the second most serious level on a five-point scale. The rest of the country remains a step below at yellow, or elevated.

Chertoff said he is convinced that terrorists are regrouping. "Our edge is technology and the vigilance of the ordinary citizen," he said.

The secretary also urged Americans to be watchful for suspicious activities in the wake of recent terror incidents in England and Scotland. On June 29, two cars packed with gas cylinders and nails were discovered in London's entertainment district. The next day, two extremists smashed their flaming Jeep Cherokee into security barriers at Glasgow Airport's main terminal.

He added, "We could easily be attacked. The intent to attack us remains as strong as it was on Sept. 10, 2001."

Why would anyone take anything Michael Chertoff -- one of the faces of the Katrina debacle --says seriously? He has no credibility and EVERYONE in the Bush Administration has been wrong, wrong, WRONG about everything. Chertoff should have been relieved of duty with Brownie back in 2005.

Furthermore, the Bush administration is known to politicize fake terror alerts for their own political benefit. Remember this article in USA Today in 2005?

Well, chilimac must have actually been first but was gracious enough to let others know the thread was here.

and here's to Howard who will always be first.  Run with Hillary??? I think NOT.  Our Howard is a true patriot, not a greedy corporatist.

And this administration is LAST.

We all know what guts are full of.

Not a chance. She would feel no need to reach out to liberals and pick a DLC toady like say.....Ed Rendell.

Well, chertoff was really convenient for ABC that had prepared a report on a Congressional sting that set up a phony company and bought some stuff the NRC is supposed to regulate.  The NRC guy said that terror is an attitude and the agitation over things atomic is overblown (my summary).  Also, they had that weasel Richard Clark on to say, "oh, yes, the threat is serious."  And he gets paid for that because he's an ABC consultant.

If there's anything this do-nothing Administration has demonstrated, it's that we don't need a President, except as a motivator and for ceremonial occasions.  Sort of ironic that the guy who wanted to make the President into a dictator has managed to emasculate him entirely.

Hubris--will do men in every time.

6.
I predict that once the oil contracts are signed, we move out of Bagdad and secure the oil infrastructure.
The fighting will follow the troops and the fighting will be over the pipelines.

Bubba is right.
If we were smart, we would put our energies into solving the Israel-Palestine problem. Then turn that joint country into the real Middle East powerhouse and let the oil pumpers suck on the stuff.

I just got an email that Nancy Pelosi was doing a phone in poll for those that wanted to weigh in on impeachment.  it was a forwarded email and the person that forwarded it said that the poll was over but that someone tookdown her opinions anyway.

Since it had been a long time between when the sender sent it and I received it, I wrote the words IMPEACH NOW! in 95 point bold Plumpt mt font, printed it out landscape and faxed it to 202.225.8259.  Went right through.

I don't trust him.

===========

Well that's straight enough - would like to know why, or what it is you don't trust him to do.? BOXER trusts his plan for security zones and international cooperation when we exit,  AND SHE VOTED AGAINST THE IRAQ RESOLUTION. You must consider that he is most likely to secure the votes from Republicans for a 2/3 majority in the Senate.  He is not the most anti-war person in the party, but it would be foolish to disregard his value in other areas.  And his speech on 3/14/2007 on the Senate floor was impressive.

You should take another look at that on the link below.

Uneasy GOP senators beseech Bush on Iraq

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - Nervous Senate Republicans beseeched the White House without apparent success Wednesday for a quick change in course on Iraq as congressional Democrats insisted on high-profile votes calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by spring.

...

I'm hopeful they (White House officials) change their minds," Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said after a meeting that National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley held with several Republicans in the Capitol.

There was no evidence of that — and the House GOP leader, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, was biting in his criticism of Republicans who have parted company with Bush on the war. "Wimps," he called them in closed-door comments confirmed by an aide.

...

"The fact is Democrats have offered no plan for success in Iraq, indeed no plan at all other than to leave the country to radical jihadists like al-Qaida," Boehner said in a written statement.

Stephen Hadley is a big big AIPAC man; lest we forgot what's going on behind the scenes; suspicious that I am.

Anyone else wondering why Keith is gone so often and why only women are filling in..three different ones so far?  Do you spose Keithie is having problems with his producers who take their order from the corps?  If it's money they want, they'd better keep Keithie or I think many will turn off the TV.

Thanks, chili!

IMO the repugs who won't even represent their constituents are brainwashed into protecting Israel at all costs, even before this country, as evidenced by their votes.

I think it might be wise, when calling and writing critters, to let them know that we know about AIPAC's influence on Capitol Hill.

Hadley is one scary man.

Howard as VP with Hillary? It would be the only thing that would make the four years with her tolerable.

I am not concerned about him becoming a "corporatist". He has a plan that he won't be diverted from. Think how quickly world opinion would turn in our favor. European leaders are looking for a "Howard Dean America" now from his recent travels.

Think about Hillary's nomination being assured, and facing another right wing actor puppet in the general election. I think Hillary needs as much of the base as she can get to win.

Remember how Howard outshone Kerry every time they were on the stage together during Kerry's campaign. Howard wouldn't be "second" no matter who he was teamed up with, but more importantly. he would be an influence.

------------------

huh! putz and prick are fast painting themselves into the impeachment corner. I really wasn't expecting it, but my guess is within the next 6 weeks. ahhhh, come on Nancy. the tipping point is here, dam it!

I love that cspan has been re-running a lot of older stuff that is germaine to this moment - basement hearings the minority dems were having on the constitutionality of Bush's actions. Jonathan Turley lays it out so clear a third grader would get it - crimianl act after criminal act - in 2004 I think his list was 8 or 9 already! we should have 100 cspans!

If there's anything this do-nothing Administration has demonstrated, it's that we don't need a President, except as a motivator and for ceremonial occasions.

It was first demonstrated by that president with Alzheimer's.

But both instances have actually demonstrated that when a president is out to lunch, hoodlums run the WH with impudence.

Yes, our initial hurdle towards decline as  nation and people began in 1980..........those that had a perpetual fear of unseen enemies since the 1950s put him in office along with many seeking to fatten their wallets...............

We are a polarized country..no such thing as a "united states", only a few simple threads holding this loose bond from social anarchy.....................we start with de-militarization, massive investment in social programs like education and health care.............then a major attempt at a return to mass transit and stopping foreign dependance on oil...........9/10 people do not need an suv or truck

In case you missed the journal at DU from a person in Italy....here it is.   They have invited Howard Dean there again.   This person started posting when he saw a link to some pictures of Dean when he was in Europe.  He traced the links there and started posting.

Willingness means little if you don't have the experience and understanding of the Constitutional process to make it happen - and know if it is possible - because if it is not successful the country may perceive it as political grandstanding.

ya know Fred whats a major problem in this country?  our politcians try to be too God damn politically correct too much of the time..................if our system allows war criminals to kill so many and trash our systems of laws, then perhaps a total review of those laws and ourselves as  nation and people is in order.................

24.  God, assuming you believe there is one,  has nothing to do with this issue

We live in a country of laws and if possible must impeach based upon those laws - or else it is a three ring circus - what 's wrong with that?

I don't know what the first step in impeachment but it making happen and wishing it to happen are two different things - and there are many vicious critics on this blog that wish for things about which they  themselves know nothing from a legal or procedural perspective.

Jo that is great -- a month or two ago Brian Lamb had some speakers on on Friday on subjects that we definitely should be paying attention to and no one else was covering it. Of course, I can't remember the subjects now, but I remember how he did it with no fanfare at all, no bias, just here it is folks. If it comes to me I will post it.

11. Mz Little at your encouragement I emailed my congresscritters and said IMPEACH CHENEY THEN BUSH. Also emailed Pelosi at her 'speaker' address: http://www.speaker.gov/contact
This link is not California only -- we can all go there and say IMPEACH.

Seashell - check your dfalink.

I'm so tired and it's only 10:09.

Anyone see the synchronized swimmers on PBS? I used to do that stuff in college before they made it look so stiff. The swimmers in O in Las Vegas are graceful and pretty by contrast. It is very difficult to do. Some of the stuff they do today would be way beyond me. The girls are all so perfectly buffed and the coaches are all obese. Old swimmers never die....

Thank you for the wonderful link to the Italian meeting.

"A step closer to my dream: the Italian Democratic Party and Dean's Dems planning things together like a true international movement for democracy and justice".

With Howard and Al moving around the world spreading common sense and unity, there is hope. It matters a little less who is president. we need to support Howard for VP no matter who is president. Another door opens.
