An Evening with Jeremy Scahill: Blackwater - The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army
Linked to groups: Sacramento For Democracy
Hello all,
Here's a reminder that SfD is co-hosting this event on Thursday (May 3rd) in lieu of our regular first Wed. of the month meeting. With the recent talk about Blackwater trying to set up a mercenary army training facility outside of San Diego, Jeremy's talk could not be more timely. Please join us for a truly informative meeting and learn how YOU can help stop Blackwater before they take over this great state of ours.
For some background information about the Blackwater situation in CA, please take a look at these postings by John Tjaden:

Jeremy Scahill, a Polk Award-winning investigative journalist returns to Sacramento. A frequent contributor to The Nation magazine and a correspondent for Democracy Now, Scahill has reported extensively from Iraq, the former Yugoslavia and Nigeria. He is currently a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army is his first book.
About BLACKWATER:
“The rise of this unchecked mercenary force, as Scahill understands, could presage the final stage in the collapse of American democracy.”
Chris Hedges, former New York Times Middle East Bureau Chief
“The most important and chilling book about the death throes of U.S. democracy you will read in years and a triumph of investigative reporting.”
Naomi Klein, author No Logo
"Of all the insane Bush privatization efforts, none is more frightening than the corporatizing of military combat forces. Jeremy Scahill admirably exposes a devastating example of this sinister scheme."
Michael Moore, Academy Award Winning Director
“In this terrifying and thrillingly written book, Jeremy Scahill introduces us to the shape of things to come, and to the kind of people and corporations who are likely to govern our lives if we don't do something about it pretty quickly.”

The Arab and Persian world has been fighting for 1400 years. Not just the major denominations such as Sunni and Shiite, but tribes, warlords, and various political groups. Dividing Iraq into three sections ignores the history of fighting, affiliations, and onging violence. It probably won't solve anything.
--------------
So - am I hearing, we should let them battle it out (as we pull out ground security forces) until the Shiites exterminate the Sunni?
Not much better than the Lebanese massacre Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in 1982 that General Sharon of Israel allowed to happen, only on an infinitely greater scale.
Wouldn't you say?
mprov - hope they do now
mprov, 36.
Wow, that's YOU? Fantastic. Now I know what dvd I've seen you posting about. That's excellent. And someone who knows all of your work, apparently. Congratulations.
good firsties Thankful
And Governor Dean, be safe while traveling in Florida and may your path not cross with the Putz....although, I guess it may already have bening you started your day off at Parrot Jungle. :)
Bush vetoes troop withdrawal bill By ANNE FLAHERTY and JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writers
12 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - President Bush vetoed legislation to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq Tuesday night in a historic showdown with Congress over whether the unpopular and costly war should end or escalate.
------
The president and the Republican party continue to ignore that the American people voted for a new direction in Iraq....one that motivates the Iraqis to take responsibility instead of one that leads to the deaths of more Americans....SAD.
And a little humor mixed in with tragedy from the Governor
President Bush has hit a new low -- and I'm not talking about his 28% approval ratings.
Today, he ignored the majority of Americans and he defied the majority of Congress. And what's worst, he told our brave men and women in uniform that they will be the ones to pay the price.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: a Democratic president wouldn't veto that bill. We put forward a thoughtful plan and the President rejected it.
Only a Democratic victory in 2008 will ensure that this war comes to a responsible end. To ensure a Democratic victory, we have to build our election operation now -- we just can't afford to wait until there's a nominee. Make a contribution and help take back the White House today:
http://www.democrats.org/EndTheWar
Here's what Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had to say about the Democratic plan to start bringing our troops home:
"The debate in Congress...has been helpful in demonstrating to the Iraqis that American patience is limited. The strong feelings expressed in the Congress about the timetable has had a positive impact...in terms of communicating to the Iraqis that this is not an open-ended commitment."
But President Bush's veto sends the opposite message. It refuses to allow the Iraqi people to stand up for their own country. It blatantly disregards the need for a political solution. Worst of all, it puts the lives of our troops right in the middle of it.
That's not a road to victory. It's a road to nowhere.
The Democratic Party is working overtime to stop this madness. We're doing all we can to change course in Iraq and to elect leaders who are accountable to the American people.
Can you help support the Democratic Party's 2008 election operation? The stakes are so high, we can't afford to wait.
http://www.democrats.org/EndTheWar
When President Bush rejects a troop withdrawal plan supported by nearly two-thirds of the country, he's not working for the American people -- he's working for himself.
The wave of support to end this war won't stop. The Democratic Party is ramping up the pressure on President Bush every day, and we're working hard to make sure that none of his Republican allies will continue his legacy.
This country has suffered through President Bush's failed policies for long enough. Help us put an end to this terrible chapter in American history:
http://www.democrats.org/EndTheWar
One veto isn't enough to stop us. The Democratic Party brought change in 2006, and with your help we'll do it again in 2008.
Sincerely,
Governor Howard Dean, M.D.
Mercenary army of the USA. This is chilling. And we pay for it, don't we?
So putz vetoed.
Impeach and indict. Please call your repug senators tomorrow!!! Without help from the repugs, we'll never get out of Iraq or get rid of putz. THREATEN TO VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE~ PLEASE~
4. i must have lectured 10 people on the subject.
phil & linda, thanks for the kudos. if you want one just tell me where to send it:

you too sitka, and anyone else besides.
Hi Linda :-)
7/8. Clearly Bush can neither see, admit, not hear that the ship is sinking - May Day, May Day - get the H out.
mprov - great review! you have mail, btw :-)
seashell - Yeah, we pay for it. It's the added amount we pay 'contractors' in Iraq for 'security'. They say they earn about $100,000 a year. They're under no authority. Our troops really don't like them. New findings suggest there are possibly 136,000 of them. That's an army! What if they don't want the war to end ? (Bush Senior, Carlyle Group has a 'security company'.)
Broken Borders – Broken Hearts
Blitzer: Raging and ANGRY MASSES..demanding! Lou Dobbs: 'Illegal fugitive immigrants – ‘enraged communities’! Cavuto: Illegals – marching! Demanding immediate….' So much for their agendas. I’ll bet 75% of the demonstrators are legal American citizens - they're talking about. Looked peaceful to me.
Did you ever stop to think that Alberto Gonzales is the man ‘making sure that the NSA and other wiretaps within the U.S. are – ethical and legal? Scarey. I guess the wrong type could wiretap leaders of the opposing party, like Nixon did. Or inside tips on the stock market? So we're going to set *benchmarks* and Maliki and Co are getting outta dodge.
Wow!
Declare a military victory and leave. We're not going to change 1400 years of infighting and the war is already spreading.
How come Rummy isn't being tried in the Hague? Oh yes, he's still in an office in the Pentagon.
repost from the last thread, then bbl
Hi Fred,
Jean's specifics match what I read, now that I recall it, in an April issue of the New Yorker. Go to the New Yorker website and type in Wolfowitz, Fred, and you'll find it there. He's not a good manager and has demonstrated his ineptness over and over. Further, his "my way or the highway" attitude has alienated most of the people he works with. He's no asset; in fact, he's one more detriment to our reputation in the world.
No, I'm not espousing civil war, not promoting it as the answer, just saying that history is very much against us. The three sections will fight among themselves until one of them is dominant. As people have said, there is no good solution. My point is that a neat division among the three isn't a likely solution either.

Even Pelosi and Reid know we are not "leaving" Iraq for a long time. The legislation was more for change than it was for leaving.
A drawdown and redeployment? Yes. The "cut and run" language is what the President and the Right like to use because everybody knows it is foolish to think we can just leave, while the country is burning down.
Everybody hates Saddam, but ruling with an Iron fist was one way of keeping law and order .
Another way to establish law and order would be to separate the groups, with border lines while having peace-keepers keep the armies of Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis from crossing the border lines and conquering the other group.
Once the groups are separated, they can form police departments of their own kind that people can trust, and law and order will be sustained.
"Partition" is not a word that will appeal to everyone, but the idea is the same - whatever you call it. And it is the only hope for leaving the country in better shape than we entered it.
More on the Bush/Moon stuff.. Not just Bush either. Some organizations are Moon-sponsored. Comment..9 I think tells about a pro-war rally in Iowa in 1991...and those taking part found out Moon was involved.
And the media doesn't cover it all.

Mother Jones has an article about it, and post 9 refers to a Frontline program with transcript from 1992.
Edgy Dems Snarl at Their Antiwar Base
http://www.counterpunch.org/walsh05012007.html
Democrats in Congress are growing increasingly hostile toward their antiwar base. David Obey has provided the most notorious example upon a chance encounter with Marine Mom, Tina Richards, in a Congressional hallway. (See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS4wHMCc57k). Richards had tried to talk with Obey, her Congressman, for a long time, but he had successfully eluded her until this day. Now she and other antiwar activists were lobbying in the Capitol in an attempt to get "our" Senators and Representatives to cut off funding for the war. Not surprisingly, Obey gave the standard response when Richards asked why he continues to fund the war. "We don't have the votes," he shouted at her. To which the answer is of course: "Congressman, we only want your one vote, and your help in getting the rest. You cannot win if you do not fight." Talk to any Dem politician and he or she will tell that they on your side but the others are the problem. So the votes are not there collectively, but individually everyone is on the side of peace. That is a very strange calculus.
The odious aspect of the encounter was that Obey set about attacking the Marine Mom and the handful of Democrats who, unlike him, refused to vote supplemental funding for the war. "Idiot liberals," was the first outburst, followed by: "The liberal groups are jumping around without knowing what the hell is in the [supplemental funding] bill"; "You're smoking something illegal"; and "If you guys don't stop screwing it up," we will end the war. Finally an aide pulled him away and he waddled through a door and slammed it shut in Richards face. What is wrong here? Why would he treat this worried mother in such a shabby way
Unfortunately, it's not just Obey. For example, Hillary's triangulating, and Obama's fudging.
everybody knows it is foolish to think we can just leave, while the country is burning down.
Not as foolish as staying inside the burning house just to show the world we're still as stupid as when we invaded Iraq.
Walsh's concluding remarks(same link as 19):
The Democrats are in an awful bind. They have been complicit in this war from the beginning--up to their necks in the death and destruction every bit as much as W. That provides an opening for a new start in American politics. But this means that the Greens and the Libertarians must seize the moment, overcome their dysfunctionality and pose a serious challenge to the two War Parties. The Democrats are on the run; will we go get 'em? Will we live up to the challenge?
20. Well said Sitka!
Democrats in Congress are growing increasingly hostile toward their antiwar base.
The political definition of stupid is being hostile toward your base.
For the last several weeks, Bush and members of his administration have attacked proponents of a timeline, saying they were undermining U.S. generals and legislating defeat:
I believe artificial timetables of withdrawal would be a mistake. … I will strongly reject an artificial timetable withdrawal and/or Washington politicians trying to tell those who wear the uniform how to do their job. [President Bush, 4/23/07]
“The…attempt to micromanage our commanders is an unwise and perilous endeavor. It is impossible to argue that an unconditional timetable for retreat could serve the security interests of the United States or our friends in the region.” [Vice President Cheney, 4/13/07]
“He’s also in denial that a surrender date he thinks is a good idea. It is not a good idea. It is defeat. It is a death sentence for the millions of Iraqis who voted for a constitution, who voted for a government, who voted for a free and democratic society.” [Dana Perino, 4/23/07]
Flashback to 1999, when George W. Bush was governor of Texas. Then, Bush criticized President Clinton for not setting a timetable for exiting Kosovo.
George W. Bush, 4/9/99, Houston Chronicle:
“Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the president to explain to us what the exit strategy is.”
And on the specific need for a timetable:
George W. Bush, 6/5/99, Scripps Howard/Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
“I think it’s also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”
Despite his past statements, Bush now refuses to apply the same standard to his war and smears those who want a similar timetable for Iraq.
UPDATE: We’ve placed the full text of the 1999 articles online HERE.
The dems are angry at their anti-war base? For god's sake, the majority of Americans are anti-war and want out. We are now the anti-war majority!

Hi Fred,
Jean's specifics match what I read, now that I recall it, in an April issue of the New Yorker. Go to the New Yorker website and type in Wolfowitz, ....
------------
I'll check it out. If what you say is true maybe Wolfie should leave. I don't have any great love for him and Riza, just don't think politics and cronyism alone are good reasons on which to waste our political capital with vendettas going after people. That all my point was from the beginning.
As far as the so-called "partitioning" goes. I think you got it wrong. Are you for a "two-state solution in Israel and the occupied territories? What I am proposing is similar.
... unfortunately, Israel has never really taken it seriously. They say they are for it, but in policy they never were and in political speeches they even continue to refer to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria, the biblical names of the Kinddom of Israel.
What are we supposed to feed our animals?
What are we supposed to feed ourselves?

About 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis were killed in the war A member of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's cabinet has resigned in protest against Israel's handling of its 2006 war against Lebanon. Eitan Cabel is the first member of the government to step down after a report accused Mr Olmert and his government of failures of judgment over the war.
"I cannot sit in a government headed by Ehud Olmert," Mr Cabel said, calling for Mr Olmert to resign immediately.
Mr Olmert says he intended to stay in office despite the damning report.
The responsibility is on the prime minister, defence minister and chief of staff ![]()
Report verdict ![]()
Olmert remains defiant Report: Key excerpts
Mr Cabel, who did not hold a portfolio, said Mr Olmert should resign as he had "lost the trust of the people" following the investigation.
The six-month government probe, led by retired judge Eliahu Winograd, accused Mr Olmert of "serious failure in exercising judgement, responsibility and prudence" during the war against Hezbollah.
It also accused Defence Minister Amir Peretz and then chief of staff General Dan Halutz of serious failures, but stopped short of calling for any resignations.
Israelis react to the report on the handling of the war in Lebanon ![]()
In pictures
Gen Halutz has already stepped down, and Mr Olmert and Mr Peretz are under pressure.
Mr Olmert is already suffering unprecedented unpopularity levels and is expected to face calls for his resignation at a mass rally planned for Thursday in Tel Aviv.
Mr Cabel was a member of the Labour Party, the main partner in the ruling coalition with Mr Olmert's Kadima party.
About 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis were killed after Israel launched a 34-day war against Hezbollah militants who had captured two Israeli soldiers.
The two soldiers remain in captivity.

India has pledged to open civilian nuclear sites to inspection Indian and US officials are meeting in Washington on Tuesday to try to settle differences over a nuclear fuel deal. Agreement was struck in July 2005 but details still need to be finalised.
US officials say they are frustrated at the pace of talks, which are centred on clauses relating to India's right to test weapons and reprocess spent fuel.
Under the landmark deal, energy-hungry India would import US civilian nuclear fuel, even though it has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
We would like to move rapidly and conclude this deal ![]()
State department spokesman Sean McCormack ![]()
Hurdles for nuclear deal
Some critics of the deal say it could boost India's nuclear arsenal. They say it sends the wrong message to countries like Iran, whose nuclear ambitions Washington opposes.
India has made clear that the final agreement must not bind it to supporting US policy on Iran or prevent it from developing its own fissile material.

This is the kind of research we should be doing, instead of researching how to kill more people faster and more painfully.
Gene therapy first for poor sight By Pallab GhoshBBC News, science correspondent
The surgery required tremendous precision A team at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital has made the world's first attempt to treat a sight disorder using gene therapy. They operated on Robert Johnson, a UK man born with a sight disorder which deteriorates with age.
At present Mr Johnson, who had genes inserted into one eye, can see outlines during the day, but little at night.
It will be several months before the researchers know whether their work has been a success.
If it is, they believe that it could be used to treat a wide range of inherited sight disorders.
How the gene therapy works
I thought putzie said he listens to the generals. Ummm, not even after he *fires* them.
Washington, DC
Today, two retired Generals who led troops in Iraq expressed outrage at the President's veto of the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act.
The President vetoed our troops and the American people. His stubborn commitment to a failed strategy in Iraq is incomprehensible. He committed our great military to a failed strategy in violation of basic principles of war. His failure to mobilize the nation to defeat world wide Islamic extremism is tragic. We deserve more from our commander-in-chief and his administration.
--Maj. Gen. John Batiste, USA, Ret.
This administration and the previously Republican controlled legislature have been the most caustic agents against America's Armed Forces in memory. Less than a year ago, the Republicans imposed great hardship on the Army and Marine Corps by their failure to pass a necessary funding language. This time, the President of the United States is holding our Soldiers hostage to his ego. More than ever apparent, only the Army and the Marine Corps are at war - alone, without their President's support.
--Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, USA, Ret.
When putz talks about progress and how we have to keep going, he's exactly like the drunk who's always going to stop drinking tomorrow. "I'll stop drinking when....."(benchmarks, removing Saddam, elections etc etc)

Don't be so serious, Phil, I never defended Wolfie. From what I read, I was defending his work and the World Bank. Nobody countered that. They just attacked him for the War, which was not the subject of discussion.
I just asked questions but never got the right answers. I told you, I am a liberal, progressive, not a leftist. Some of what Wolfie and Riza were doing seemed like liberal ideals.
Received this email today but too tired to follow up...this is from our local community radio station but seems like the ruling would have wide reaching effects. No better place to share than here.
Dear Friends of WOOL.LP Community Radio,
Internet music may soon fall silent. WOOL.fm may not be able to
broadcast on the internet any longer if you don't act.
An obscure regulatory agency recently buckled under pressure from
giant music labels and passed a rule that could force most independent
and noncommercial Internet radio stations, such as NPR, off the Web.
The ruling will go into effect on May 15 unless we urge Congress to
Rescue Internet Radio:
Rescue Internet Radio: Take Action Now
After intense lobbying from the recording industry the Copyright
Royalty Board (CRB) ignored a massive public outcry and ruled to
dramatically increase the rates webcasters must pay every time they
stream a song. These draconian rules will shut down noncommercial and
independent Internet radio outlets, leaving the Web with the same
cookie-cutter music formats that have destroyed commercial radio.
Independent musicians, webcasters, media reformers and Internet radio
listeners have joined forces with members of Congress to reverse this
bad decision. Late last week, Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Donald
Manzullo (R-Ill.) introduced the bipartisan Internet Radio Equality
Act ( H.R. 2060), which would reverse the CRB decision in favor of a
system that supports artists without putting webcasters out of business.
Rescue Internet Radio: Support the Internet Radio Equality Act
The Copyright Royalty Board passed these bad rules despite protest
letters from tens of thousands of concerned music listeners. They
refused our call for a public hearing and rushed through their
decision at the urging of music industry lobbyists from the Recording
Industry Association of America.
Musicians must be compensated for their work. But the new regulations
would silence many outlets that play independent artists and musical
genres you can't find on the radio dial. And nonprofit NPR, Pacifica
and community radio stations would be forced to take down most of
their online musical programming.
Inslee and Manzullo's legislation would allow artists and musicians to
thrive alongside a new generation of Internet radio webcasters. Help
pass the Internet Radio Equality Act by telling all your friends to
take action now:

Congress has responded to the will of the American people. President Bush has not. The President is clinging to his failed stay-the-course strategy in Iraq, while brave servicemen and women risk their lives for his mistakes.
House and Senate Democrats offered a plan for change in Iraq that gave the President every penny he requested for soldiers on the ground and more. But it also gave him something he's tried to avoid: accountability.
President Bush may have the bully pulpit - but we have you. Close to 60,000 of you signed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)'s petition to the President telling him not to veto our plan. The American people are with us and the fight for a New Direction in Iraq is not over - we hope you will continue to stand with us.
We are counting on you -- and millions of Democrats across the country who are united and energized as never before -- to help build an unstoppable Democratic Majority and put a Democrat in the White House in 2008.
Thank you for your continued dedication.
Sincerely,
Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives
P.S. In just our first 100 days, Democrats have already taken America in a New Direction. I really think the Wolfie / Riza affair is an interesting study. They seemed to be drawn together for romantic reasons of idealistic, if not misguided notions of how to achieve that purpose in Iraq. He is a very Jewish Neocon, she a Saudi Moslem feminist, and they were both full of dreams of transforming the middle east. Wolfie's sister is a Biologist, with Left wing political leanings....

Yeah, Re-elect Gore.
linda b, if I cud giv u that 4 your B day, I wud.
But, in the mean time, my sincerest wishes for a great day!!!
Happy Happy Birthday to YOU!
This may surprise you all, but I'm holding out for Gore, too :)
What bugged the heck out of me during Bush's little veto speech tonight was when he walked on 'stage' he walked across that bright red carpet to the podium and to his left and right were two fancy gold gilt chairs upholstered in red -- it all looked so damned ROYAL. I'll bet it was planned to -- look at me I'm the decider I'm King George.
It HAS to be true....Gore in August or September.
That would set the Earth back on its proper axis, save the Arctic, and thus the world.
Imagine all the bumperstickers jc could come up with!
Caligula was really nutso just like Bush.
Linda*in*SFNM ... jc is awesome! We're going to take this country forward yet~!!
(The whole life of privilege thing. Privilege weakens your sense of humanity.)

Quote of the day: To announce there should be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by this President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American Public. – Theodore Roosevelt
Impeachment time is upon us.
............ on CNN
THEY DID IT~! Police without warning fired rubber bullets at the marchers - including women and CHILDREN! CNN newscrew caught in the middle. Kept saying - they couldn't believe it either. No warning. Showed one man's huge bruise. People grabbing up their children and running. Not sure what caused the police to LOSE IT - maybe they watched Lou Dobbs. I mean --- maybe our Mexican American citizens aren't real people either, like the Iraqi's. Bush's thugs and Lou Dobbs and Glen Beck must be SO happy......
Glen Beck -- oh so obvious. CNN's main host (conservative whacko who belongs in a clown suit) on Headline news. GUEST on a lot of their programs now, with his opinions. CNN's clone of Rush Limbaugh. This man is on something I know, he's a reformed alcholic, but turn off the sound some time and watch this guy. WHACKO. BE PROUD CNN..... your cover is off.
SICK SICK SICK
The President has refused the funding. Congress can stop the War!
Now it only takes 40 Senator's NO votes to stop the war, not a two thirds majority.
Are there 40 Patriots in the Senate?
New thread :-)
This is another warm your cockles story.
California Hotels Go Green With Low-Flow Toilets, Solar Lights
By Ari Levy and Carole Zimmer
April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Visitors to the Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa won't find the Gideon Bible in the nightstand drawer. Instead, on the bureau will be a copy of ``An Inconvenient Truth,'' former Vice President Al Gore's book about global warming.
They'll also find the Gaia equipped with waterless urinals, solar lighting and recycled paper as it marches toward becoming California's first hotel certified as ``green,'' or benevolent to the environment. Similar features are found 35 miles south at San Francisco's Orchard Garden Hotel, which competes for customers with neighboring luxury hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and Fairmont.
``I'm not your traditional Birkenstocks and granola type of guy,'' said Stefan Muehle, general manager of the Orchard Garden, who said green measures are reducing energy costs as much as 25 percent a month. ``We're trying to dispel the myth that being green and being luxurious are mutually exclusive.''
The Gaia and Orchard are seeking to be the first hotels in California certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, which has authenticated 800 buildings across the U.S. and has about 6,000 in the process, including 30 hotels. San Francisco and other cities offer financial incentives to lessen water and energy use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Seven years ago, the Green Building Council developed a rating system called the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED. Buildings are certified based on their use of environmentally friendly features such as recycled construction materials, solar lighting, and efficient energy and water systems. Older buildings may be retrofitted.

fred....you build up political capital here for weeks and then waste it all in defense of Wolfie
I suspect it was just a front to attack the Leftist bogeymen who hide under his bed.
And he did defend Wolfie.
And it was pointed out to him that what Wolfie did was wrong and it would be hypocrisy to let him off because the NYTimes (the same paper that built him up before the Iraq Disaster) did another sham story on him as a friend to the world's poor.

------------
I did not defend Wolfie's past, but I stated that most of what I heard of his and girlfriend's work at the world bank was good, even progressive in nature, and wanted someone on this blog to give me evidence to the contrary before we say that he should leave. If that is defending him against being kicked out of his job, then that I did, but let's be specific about that. I don't defend his right-wing notoriety.
I've said it before. I'll say it again -- and probably again. Wolfoshits is in trouble because of the special favors he did for his girlfriend. It's got nothing to do with your never ending battle with Leftists. And it doesn't matter if he's a Mother Theresa in NeoCon's clothing or not.
You don't give your girlfriend a pay raise, promotion and transfer to the State Department and expect to get away with it.
I hope you finally understand.
